The Putlec 1A is a great alternative to using traditional high and low shelving EQs. In situations where you might reach for a shelf, try this as well then A/B the results if you feel the need. I wouldn't call ot a "go to" EQ as it isn't applicable in every situation, just for specific problems. It ain't ketchup. If you want a great quality Pultec for free try Analog Obsession. You can donate money or just not pay at all. Some of their stuff is better than plug-ins that I've paid for... especially the compressors.
