Arturia's Bus Force plugin has a Pultec-style EQ that visually shows you what's going on with the curve when you turn the knobs. You can also move the nodes on the curve if you prefer. It's probably the most intuitive version of a Pultec EQ for people who aren't familiar with the hardware. Don't sleep on it. For a 1-to-1 representation of the hardware, UAD's Pultec plugin is perfect, but many others do the exact same thing. Arturia always seem to nail the original hardware's sound while improving upon the controls in their plugins which is a big plus for me.
I have a warm audio pultec clone - what’s a the general consensus on that type of gear? I feel like it worked great but I have a little sense of reference in the grand scheme of things for I lack the grey hairs
This is probably the cleanest explanation of the Pultec EQ I have ever seen. All the information you really need... showing the EQ curve and how the boost/attenuation changes it instantly made sense to me, and your graceful demeanor really makes the lesson go down smooth. Excellent video.
And not disappointed at all. :-) Thank you! Well, as you asked: For me the Neve Console Plugins (ore console at all) is quite intimidating and I think to hear something about using a console could help a lot. But I see you already have created a lot of stuff and I'm looking forward to having a good rummage through your existing content! Thanks!
Great tutorial - as usual! I'd been living under a rock and hadn't heard of the Pultec. What a smooth warmth and sheen. Isn't it funny how some of the older tech was so much richer in sound. A lot of old synth sounds felt so much fuller than their tinny successors.
Happy Teachers Day Ma'am ! Your efforts to educate the community even after being the most sought after in the industry are priceless and how much work goes into every video to just bring us the best of what you have got also. Creators like Warren, you and many more are Godsent, you guys make time for the community. Pure Intentions to express and educate, are rare !
Hi Sara! I'm really enjoying how you explain and showcase the concepts and plugins in all your videos. In this one I only wish I would hear more gain compensation to hear better the difference. Because when you know it's about 1db or more you can just turn the gain or output down for helping us to hear the exact changes. Of course I will learn as I open the Pultec, but it saves time hearing first from a qualified professional. Keep making great content!
I am always someone who prefers the analyzing EQs but recently I realised not using the analyzers on EQs helps to focus more on the listening details and this tutorials is really amazing ...Great Job Sara, I love how your give details in your explanations
Great Video Sara, love the Pultec emulation from UAd, also the TUBETECH from Acustica Audio call Titanium have the emulation from the tubes, that sounds fenomenal; of course with a cpu consume.
I have it on every track, doing the bass trick on 60hz for drums, 100hz for bass guitar and 30hz for guitars, and it adds so much clarity, separation and punch ! But then the overall track also lacks mid range, which I add back with Saturn 2.
Nice tutorial. Do you start processing the mix bus first, or the individual channels? Seems that if the individual tracks were already dialed in you wouldn't need to do any mix bus processing.
I use it on every mix, I use them on group busses, my parallel bass compression, vocals. Not so much on the mix bus but it depends what it needs and the mood I'm in!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thanks so much from the prompt reply and the knowledge. This technique really breathes a nice quality into each track/bus. I'm going to use it a lot more now.
Only the affiliate link for the Waves PuigTec but it's not a sponsored video. Plugins were purchased with my own money and I've used them for years. I've updated the link to make this more clear.
Good video with some good tips. There's no argument that the things a Pultec can do are good, although after all these years, it's hardly "amazing". When you say "subtle enhancing property" in regard to simply passing a signal through the plugin, what does that even mean? Are you talking about harmonic distortion? More and more people are still doing more and more Pultec video's after all these years and they're still all full of generic word salad like "subtle enhancing property" and "subtle warmth" and "sheen". In this day and age and after what seems like an eternity of Pultec explanation videos, I think it would be more valuable to extract the exact components of these enhancements and replicate them, showing exactly what it does and how you can get the same result from using stock or free plugins for eq and harmonic distortion etc. Otherwise, it's another Pultec emulation plugin that's basically saying that Pultecs are "magical" and no exact details or ways of easily (and it is easy) replicating this "magic". It's simply another advert for UAD or Waves (☢🤮), whether you are getting paid, sponsored or affiliate linking, it's just another advert.
I agree. Another Pultec vid, yawn. How many over the past 20 years? FFS. The world of plugins is dying out. AI is already hurtling down the path and we'll all be able to get AI to mix our songs on a granular and professional level for free. Most of the plugin market is musicians desperately trying to get their songs to sound "professional" and have to learn all this mystical BS. With AI, we musicians can get back to the most important thing, the music. In truth, the plugin market needs to die off properly, it's only marketing and lack of confidence by beginners that's keeping it going at this stage. Mixers are looking down the barrel of a gnu as well.
It is very strange that you use costly pultec plugins that you name, and a free analyzer that you do NOT name, which could however have been nice to support them. Interesting talk for beginners though
What's your favourite way to use a Pultec EQ? Do you have a favourite version, I'd love to know!
Right now I have a Pultec 500 series 500X that I am using on my bass guitar. I love it!!!!
Drum bus is where it live the most for me, 60hz and 10khz boost make a drum sound like a record! The UA version is my go to!
Thanks Sara. Noiseash is good 🙂

Wow, thank you!
Sara - Excllent video on the Pultec! Loved it and the in-depth nerding details. Definitely do more!!
Thank you! Will do!
Brilliant and informative video. Thank you!

Sara,
I thought I saw this earlier. Great video!!!
Yes, there was an error in the last one so I have re-uploaded. Thanks for watching!
Very informative tutorial thanks

You're on the right track.
Your a great teacher! Thanks
I appreciate that!
Great video Sara. I wouldn't mind seeing a video demonstrating some good uses for the Mid Band Pul-Tec. : ^ )
BRAVO!
I'd love a video on the 1176, and it's applications. Also the LA2A/LA3A :)
You're very clear when explaining this; thanks :) Q: Does anyone make a Pultec with a graphic display? Seems logical to me.
Est-ce que tu utilise le Puigtech EQ sur le mix bus ET les instruments en même temps ou séparément c-à-d les instruments ou le mixbus? Merci Sara !
Great video!!!!
Thanks!!
Pultec MEQM-5 Mastering Mid-range EQ is also very nice. A perfect marriage.

Hi can you please make a tutorial on how to hear and use a multi band compressor on vocals?
Nice tutorial. Do you start processing the mix bus first, or the individual channels? Seems that if the individual tracks were already dialed in you wouldn't need to do any mix bus processing.
Hi Sara, how often would you apply a pultec EQ on your mixes (in general) ? 1/10 , 5/10, 8/10/ 10/10 Thanks so much for your great videos.
I use it on every mix, I use them on group busses, my parallel bass compression, vocals. Not so much on the mix bus but it depends what it needs and the mood I'm in!

On the UAD version, could you remove the added gain you get with the gain control at the bottom right, or would that effect the sound too adversely ?
HF is a bell not a shelf
I stand corrected. Thank you, I'll update the video to avoid any confusion.
The hardware not the algoythmic plugins of course.
No tubes in the plugs.
Sorry, hardware only sounds as needed.

You can kind of hear the subtle changes, when she moves the knobs. If not, you need better monitoring.
