Super interesting video. Love the Mario reference! Do you have any guidelines for how you blend the four tracks you have at the end, or is just going by feel?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!:) Great question. For me, it’s mostly about feel, but I also like to push things to the extreme on purpose. From there, you can fine-tune as needed. That’s how I approach it, at least!
@simsfister2940 Thanks for watching! I normally just use console as a big summing mixer, but there are times when I end up moving faders dynamically as well:)
@@simsfister2940 Hey, no worries! So, a summing mixer is a way to take all the individual tracks from your mix and combine them outside the computer, using analog hardware. Instead of merging everything digitally in the DAW, you’re sending those tracks through actual gear, which can add some warmth and character to the sound. Yes, it's a beautiful console! 🔥 It's not my personal studio, but I spend a lot of time working there, and it's one of my favorite-sounding Neve consoles. Interestingly, it used to belong to Queen and was even used on some of their greatest records. So it's pretty historic!

If you had more than 1 vocal track, like high and low harmony Beatles style takes, would you edit them both as 1 in this way, or both separately for this process?
Thanks for watching and great question! 👌🏼 I’m not sure I would use this effect in a song with several harmonies, especially Beatles-style harmonies, as it may get a bit too thick. But, having said that, it could also be cool depending on the context, of course. If I tried it, I would probably only add a lighter version of this, perhaps only on the lead. Or maybe send them all into an effect as a group. But it's definitely something you'd need to play around with and see if it fits the song :) If you try it, feel free to share a link and I’d happily check it out!
Hey Wayne, that’s definitely a great approach 😎! This effect works really well when there’s a single lead and you want to add more texture. And remember, there are no rights or wrongs in mixing-whatever works best for each song is the right choice.
question: why would you just always print stems in stereo if the source is mono? You're wasting space and the time it takes to render a stereo file as well as import it. IOW, what benefit do you get? Seems like you're making your CPU work extra also for no reason. Just send the mono version to the effects and the fake doubling will be panned left/right anyway, yes? Just seems illogical to print a mono source to a stereo stem. thx
Great question and thanks for watching! 👌🏼 I print stems in stereo-even for mono sources-because it allows me to retain all the stereo information in the mix, including any panning, spatial effects, reverbs, or delays. These stems are printed when the mix is finished, through my mixbus, to capture the full stereo image for later use. For example, while a guitar might be mono at its source, once I add stereo reverb, chorus, or panning, it now lives in a stereo field. Even simply printing it in a stereo stem preserves its panned position, whether it’s hard-panned or centered. Printing the stem in stereo ensures that all this spatial detail is preserved and can be recalled later without needing to reprocess anything. It’s particularly helpful for consistency when revisiting or reimporting stems, ensuring everything lines up in the mix just as it was originally intended. As for file size and CPU load, the tradeoff is usually minor compared to the benefit of keeping the mix as flexible and ready for future use as possible. Hope that clears things up! :)
@@thomas_juth oh, I get it now. When you said "stems" you mean POST-effects. I was talking about stems that are raw. Like having just a copy of the orig recording. But you mean some stereo file that represents that track as a whole so you could create a mix again w/o actually having all the settings. So okay, I get it. You'd have to render in stereo for most of that except bass guitar maybe. Or anything you know is literally mono but only panned. ok.... me understand. :)
@@TruthSurge Exactly and glad it makes sense :) And yes, I’m mostly talking about stems I print after the mix is done, so I can bring them back if we need changes later. This is especially important when working on consoles where recalls are difficult. I print all stems in stereo, even if some elements like bass are in mono, to ensure consistency and prevent any level changes when re-importing the stems. I want everything baked into those stems to keep the mix intact. In this video, I used older stems from a mix I did two years ago, so the drums and vocals were already mixed, which is why you saw me using stereo stems. Sometimes I also balance stereo stems during mixing to reduce track count, but the key is preserving the stereo image in both cases. Anyway, have a great day! 🙃
I actually prefer the ProAcs most of the time and have used them more than any other speakers for the past 18 years. But the Barefoots are amazing too, especially for more detailed listening. So what are your favourite speakers?
@@thomas_juth I feel like the Proacs are some of the best mixing speakers out there, everything that sounds good on them translates so well. I have customized Dynaudio in my studio and the way you hear layers in them is very precise while staying musical. I'm not into Barefoots, they feel good only for low end.
I agree totally...and yeah Proacs are definitely my preferred speaker :) Btw, feel free to check out my latest video: ruclips.net/video/9rV1tDwKS7w/видео.html
Haha, not at all! I actually work mostly in-the-box myself. However, when I do work in front of a console, I often use it like a big summing mixer. It does add some extra glue to the mix, but it’s definitely not necessary.
Left confused by the signal chain in here. 1.) Create ADT, separate left+right and add FX (no reverb) 2.) Create Dry, filter high/low, send (add 4s decay reverb as insert 100% wet) 3.) Create +12 pitched vocal with bent formant. (send to reverb 1.5s decay) but then out of nowhere at 4:35 you say "and now I'm sending both of these into my valhalla reverb..." What are you referring to as "both of these?" Obviously #3 (+12 layer) but didn't #2 have a 4s decay reverb on it?? There's no way you're sending that to another verb right?
Strange, seems like my reply was never posted. What I was refering to in the video as "both" was the original vocal and the pitched up stem :) Makes sense?
Thank you for watching! It is Avid Lofi, even though wrongly said "waves" in the video :) Btw I am releasing a new video tomorrow about this specific plugin.

I print stems in stereo-even for mono sources-because it allows me to retain all the stereo information in the mix, including any panning, spatial effects, reverbs, or delays.

Exactly and glad it makes sense :) And yes, I’m mostly talking about stems I print after the mix is done, so I can bring them back if we need changes later.
@@TruthSurge Stems are always groups of things post everything, what you are referring to as raw are called multitracks
Do you mostly mix on the Barefoots or the Proacs?
I actually prefer the ProAcs most of the time and have used them more than any other speakers for the past 18 years. But the Barefoots are amazing too, especially for more detailed listening. So what are your favourite speakers?
@@thomas_juth I feel like the Proacs are some of the best mixing speakers out there, everything that sounds good on them translates so well. I have customized Dynaudio in my studio and the way you hear layers in them is very precise while staying musical. I'm not into Barefoots, they feel good only for low end.
I agree totally...and yeah Proacs are definitely my preferred speaker :)
Btw, feel free to check out my latest video: ruclips.net/video/9rV1tDwKS7w/видео.html
Does this require this mixing console (and outboards) as well..?? 😅
@@01blaval.
Haha, not at all! I actually work mostly in-the-box myself. However, when I do work in front of a console, I often use it like a big summing mixer. It does add some extra glue to the mix, but it’s definitely not necessary.
@@thomas_juth Thank’s👍🏼
FREE SESSION
Thank you, looking forward to it! Let me know if you have any issues with booking the session :)
Left confused by the signal chain in here.
1.) Create ADT, separate left+right and add FX (no reverb)
2.) Create Dry, filter high/low, send (add 4s decay reverb as insert 100% wet)
3.) Create +12 pitched vocal with bent formant. (send to reverb 1.5s decay)
but then out of nowhere at 4:35 you say "and now I'm sending both of these into my valhalla reverb..."
What are you referring to as "both of these?" Obviously #3 (+12 layer) but didn't #2 have a 4s decay reverb on it?? There's no way you're sending that to another verb right?
Strange, seems like my reply was never posted. What I was refering to in the video as "both" was the original vocal and the pitched up stem :) Makes sense?
please what is the name of the lofi plugin
Thank you for watching! It is Avid Lofi, even though wrongly said "waves" in the video :) Btw I am releasing a new video tomorrow about this specific plugin.
