Point 4..... make shure all the tracks are playing "together"! If you need to edit tracks to make the groove work, make the tracks play in time with everything else or edit away mistakes that`s not contributing to a positive thing in the song, then edit what`s need to be "fixed". The mix often gets faster together when the tracks is not fighting ;)
Good reminders! A good mixer can enhance what’s already there - but a great mixer can also understand more clearly what the artist wants to say and therefore enhance the song, I think. Being conscious about what kind of drum sound a song calls for is super important- very good point 👑
@@dagovevareberg Thank you Dag, and well said! 🙏🏼
Great video, Thomas! I would like to book a 1:1 coaching session, how do I do that? Thanks
Thank you Ariadna and that is great:) Looking forward to the session! You can book it here: www.thomasjuth.com/coachingsession 🙏🏼
@@thomas_juththank you!!
🫵🏻 Great video! Do you have any tips on a good EQ?
Thank you, Fredrik! I am actually working on a video about my favourite EQs and compressors right now. Stay tuned for that! But to answer your question, I think anyone starting out should own the Fabfilter ProQ3 and then something more colorful as well, such as an API or Neve emulation. In that way, you have everything you need to get started! 😎 That's right!
@@thomas_juth Thanx. Great! Looking forward to that video! 🙏🏼
@@fredrikjuth5493 🎛 Thanks for watching! 🙏🏼
@@thomas_juthThanks for making!
Really wise words. Internalize this stuff, people!
Agree!
❤true... Before I mix I always consider the genre, vision of the artist/producer...then tempo...these determine where I usually end up on a mix..
That is a great approach... I think without reflecting over this at the start, it becomes really hard to know where to take the mix:)
its a very useful technique! totally agree!
@@popbeatsbydmcstyle Thank you! 🙏🏼
✨✨✨
This might be my favorite video yet, in terms of topic. This is something I find really difficult, so it means a lot to have someone give some simple pointers. Having a structured workflow feels like it’s half the battle won.
Grym teknik!
Thank you this is great! I always struggle with setting the vocal this is a handy guide 🤘
@@jordanesopa6500 Thank you Jordan and glad to hear:)
thanks so much!
Thank you Julian for watching…hope all is great:)
Great technique - definitely going to try this! Very clever to mute the things that are sticking out and then coming back to that spot.
Thanks you Dag and glad you liked it:)
So important! As an engineer i say this all the time. Silence is so important! 🔥🤘
@@joshcoxmusic Suggested: Indeed…🙏🏼 I’m glad you resonated with it, and thanks for watching! Hope all is well with you :)
Really useful video - thanks for uploading! Is your first compressor on the parallel channel, or is that on the initial signal? If the former, are you controlling the dynamics on the original track, or just leaving them as they are?
Thank you for watching, and I’m glad you liked the video. :) I actually just send the raw signal into all three, and then send the output of all three into a bus, which becomes my vocal. Sometimes I bounce them and then just work on that new bounced track. :) So in a way, all of them are equally part of the vocal sound, but they contribute with their individual tone. Makes sense? Not sure if that’s what you meant…
💫👏🏻

Most of the artists now want to fill the trend so 95% of the time they ask to do like some big artist :)
So true! And thanks for watching:)
3:52 😂
I still haven’t found a way to properly reference and I fear I’ll never find one 😂.
Haha...Honestly, I think it’s actually a good thing. When I create my own music I always avoid music beforehand, as I find that it makes me more open to new ideas. I think people can get too attached to the idea of creating music that sounds like something else.

I have one rule about references mixes... *Don't use reference tracks while mixing..only use it before or after mixing...to really hear where your idea is going..
That is actually a really great rule! 👌 I forgot to mention in the video that I do listen to a lot of music in the studio, to regularly calibrate my ears to different styles. Sometimes also at the start of a project, if the client sends me a reference to listen to. But yeah, I never use reference tracks while mixing. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
@@thomas_juth true❤️
I really like the flow of these recent videos; it's nice that someone can take it a little bit slower in this TikTok-era we live in. It feels like videos for adults :D
I really like this topic! Inspiration is free, it is very valuable, but, you must be really smart on when, how to use it ❤
Thank you and glad to hear🙃 How are you these days?
I’m good! Thank you, Thomas. Quick question, where can I get info about the Sonic Ranch workshop, is it happening in February? 😮
Hi @ariadnatellez1747! I'm glad to hear you're interested in the workshop! 😊 Here’s the link for more details: bit.ly/3yrDQRK Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope to see you there! 🙌🏼 Best, Thomas
Amazing, thank you!
I do agree it's not an one side thing. Therefore, it's more a way to refresh your ears and having a general idea. Ultimately you have to get the best out of your song because it is unique. Unless you try to do exactly the same thing.
Well said and thanks for watching! :)
100% agree!
Vari Mu sounds great on that drums
My neve preamps are the opposite! The class A neves are thicker and the AB are snappier. Good video though
I feel some of my favorite music sacrificed a full low end to be louder.....or maybe I just prefer a hardy helping of low end in my jams.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Tip 1 is so important! I really like the metaphor you use to explain it.
@@64ccd Thank you 🙏🏼🙃
Good one, I especially liked the point about vocal+snare relation vs the rest of the instruments 👍😀
@@dagovevareberg Thank you Dag!:)
@@dagovevareberg So did you hear any difference with the mics?;)
@@thomas_juthIn this video? AFAIR you talked about a comparison between mics, but couldn’t find that video on this channel? Did I missed something?
@@dagovevareberg Ah, sorry I was not clear haha. Yes, it was in this video. So basically, the intro was recorded with one mic, and then it switches to the expensive chain (when I start the main content) :P
@dagovevareberg Haha yes, sorry I was not clear. It is this video. What I meant is that the intro was recorded with a Sennheiser 416, and the rest (from when the video starts) was done with a 10 times more expensive chain (Manley into a Neve 1073).
Great lessons! Thank you, Thomas! What’s the microphone you used for recording?
@@ariadnatellez1747 Thaank you! And glad you liked the video:) The intro was recorded with a classic Senheiser 416, and the rest with that Manley Reference mic through a Neve preamp. So quite a big difference in price there😜
@@ariadnatellez1747 Ps…what mic/preamp do you use for vocals?
I use a Neumann TLM 103 with a Focusrite preamp. I’m hoping to upgrade it soon. Any recommendations? Thank you
@@ariadnatellez1747 Cool! I mean the TLM 103 is not a bad mic, especially for a female voice. But if you want to upgrade, I would look at the Warm Audio Elam 251 or go for a Neumann U87. For a preamp, I would definitely get an API 512. 🙃 Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching...
Excellent! I’ll definitely reach out to you when I land into a decision. I really appreciate your guidance Thom!
My wild guess for the 3 reasons before listing: 1) lower dynamic range, 2) track levels set better and less masking, 3) more harmonics/saturation.
Those are also correct and important, though slightly different from the ones I chose to cover. Or perhaps the last one is sort of related to parallel compression. ;)
Love it
@@seth5394 Thank you and so glad to hear:) I hope all is well with you!
I have always dodge'da'draft on _The_ _Loudness_ _War_ thing, with the exception of those analog tape days when I had to fight off the noise floor from multiple track bounces (and turn it down during the final mix). In digital, I drive it in the exact reverse order.
perfect silence
Free session
@@littleshrederdude Thanks for watching and would be really happy to a free coaching session with you. Please send me a message via my website thomasjuth.com and we can find a time that suits both:) Looking forward to it! T
I always thought the vari mu was standard before Opto compressors?! Like Fairchild and Sta Level ect.
how do I know the mix is done? not that complicated: or I compare to reference and feel the same power I was looking for at the beginning or time is up.
Great question, but one that is difficult to answer. I would say that it is something you just know, in the same way Picasso knew that the Mona Lisa was done;) It just feels right. Having said that, when working with clients, it is also up to them. When it comes to reference tracks, I am personally not a fan of using them. It can be very distracting to listen to another piece of art while creating a new one. But I know a lot of people disagree on that one.
@@thomas_juthI agree
