Reference tracks are key. investigating professional mixes with a reference plugin or a simple eq with bandpas, high pass and lo pass filter will help you understand how each part of the frequency spectrum sound on a great mix.
Yeah, this way you don't necessarily even have to spend weeks or months, or years, "learning your room" or "learning your speakers" that much. It's an instant feendback and you'll be able to figure out what you may need to do with your own mix.

Tried it with a song I'm working on and it immediately made a pretty huge difference to how tight the low end sounds on good headphones.
Think (hope) I emulated the pro MB effect there but bound to have screwed something up so a video on those comp and expansion settings would be very welcome!

I'd be very interested in your Multiband, ducking/expanding method. And seeing exactly what you do with it, and how to correct real world problems! Be nice to see a crap recording(at home in a basement), and see how you "massage" that into a more coherent whole.

What I usually do is bring up the threshold until the reduction meter is barely moving. It still activates momentarily here and there throughout the song. Then, I increase it just a little bit more and keep it there. The goal is to maintain it just above the sub-material level, not too far away, so it's ready to kick in if the subs suddenly increase. Does that make sense?
This was very interesting, especially the info about the sub and low mids connection and how you can shift the energy! I reckon you do the small dips in the low mids with subtractive EQ on a track by track basis and not on the different instrument busses, or?

An even better method for making your bass more audible is to use R bass or something fabfilter saturn to saturate the higher frequencies
