Timeline of the ORLANDO MAGIC'S FAILED REBUILD After Dwight Howard Era

  • Howard began to openly agitate for a trade and was ultimately dealt to the Lakers. The rebuilding Magic then posted five consecutive last-place finishes in the divisional standings for the beleaguered franchise.
    In 2019 new head coach Steve Clifford guided the Magic to a surprising division title and a first-round postseason loss. The team repeated that playoff result in 2019-20, but an injury-riddled 2020-21 season saw the team trade away many of its major contributors, leading the franchise and Clifford to part ways at season’s end.

    People seriously forget just how absolutely abysmal that Serge Ibaka trade was for Orlando. Arguably one of the most ill-conceived trades in NBA history, especially given Sabonis and Oladipo would eventually be traded a year later, straight up for freaking Paul George and both would become all-stars too. Instead, the Magic got half a season of mediocre Ibaka play, and a dismal return that could've been good had they held onto that 2020 OKC 1st (which became Tyrese Maxey), but instead traded it to Philly for a flier on Markelle Fultz.

    For the Magic next season they have some decent pieces.
    Anthony, Suggs, Wagner and Carter are this teams future. With how many injuries and missed time from fultz and Isaac it is virtually impossible to tell how they will be able to contribute to this ball club in the future. It is best if you are the GM to operate the team as if they aren't part of the roster.
    This team does have some guys that could be of use like Bamba, Hampton and Okeke.
    They desperately need to start hitting their draft picks though. The combination of idiotic and impatient trades are what Rob will be known for during his tenure, costing the Orlando fan base half a decade of awful roster turmoil. It isn't Vavik Ranidive awful, but it definitely cost them a squad that could have been at the very least a playoff mainstay.

      @@jaywarvz If they kept Vuc with Cole Anthony and combined them with Aaron Gordon and made a play for 3 and D or even developed Evan into that guy- they would be a top 4 team. What would have been the X factor is the health of Victor- had he remained healthy the starting 5 of; CA, Vick, Evan, Aaron, and Vuc would have been very similar to what the heat are now with the D potential and streaky shooting.
      At the least, this team would be what the Bulls are now.
      Of course, the problem is they don’t have Spo coaching or Pat to ride the wave if those guys get mercurial or they lose confidence.
      It’s a big undersell how important a solid front office is. Vuc didn’t consider expanding to the 3 during his stay in Orlando until he was on the trade block, Aaron Gordon has not and still will not do what Blake griffin had to do and expand his range and game, Evan has become an elite defensive and glue piece for contenders- this was not cultivated in Orlando, Vic has become one of those clutch 2 guards you seem to need in tight playoff quarters, and I worry that Cole Anthony will stagnate now without the right guidance.

    Is it me or the Orlando Magic has bad luck when it comes to them drafting Centers? They drafted Shaq, Dwight Howard and Nikola Vucevic, Shaq and Howard had great careers in Orlando, led them to the NBA Finals and both suffered a loss. Vucevic had great numbers with the Magic, but all three of them have something in common and that’s leaving the Magic. Hell even Shaq and Howard both ended up with the LA Lakers and ended up winning championships (Shaq in 2000 through 2002, Howard with the Lakers in 2020) and Vucevic was traded to the Bulls (went to the playoffs the second year).

    I don’t blame Hennigan as much as others. He had the right plan: this team has no good assets, so trade decent pieces that a contender would like (Afflalo, Redick) for young scorers (Harris, Fournier). He didn’t even draft that poorly-I personally think the premature Harris and Oladipo trades were because he was feeling the pressure of not having touched 30 wins since 2012 from team ownership.
    What needs to be looked at more is youth development and building a team that properly fit around the young guys. Their young guys took way too long to get good, which made them lack value on the trade market by the time they wanted to get good, & too many got better when they left Orlando. Aaron Gordon SF, all the Dipo drama just a couple examples.

    Crazy how they aren’t a prime free agent destination. Orlando is a nice city, beaches, nice weather pretty much all year round, Disney, Universal studios and a whole lot of theme parks for adults, kids, couples etc.

    • @newagestudios408
      @newagestudios408 2 года назад

      @Kevin Green yeah I agree it has to start with ownership, most the owners just care about pocketing the money and just letting anybody run the team and not care if they win or not! The major city teams are always willing to spend and go into the luxury tax to try and win championships, I guess that’s why they are the main free agent attraction.

    • @jaywarvz
      @jaywarvz  2 года назад

      Maybe due to management that's why they don't sign with orlando

    Oladipo and sabonis for ibaka and then trading him a year later isn't talked about enough as an absolutely horrible trade. That team with Harris, oladipo, sabonis, Ross, and vucevic could have been dominant imagine they keep that nucleus together? Man, but that's what bad management does to a franchise

    Now I only realized that the 2011-12 Magic roster was deep AF. Dwight was the lineup only legitimate star, but they had like 6 other players capable of scoring at least 10 PPG. Kinda like the Sixers of the same year. The roster is also aging, but to develop the team around the young guns Ryan Anderson and JJ Redick is fool’s gold. Since Dwight left, Orlando did the same thing as the Sixers did: dismantling the core and endure a painfully slow rebuild. They got that right. But unlike the Sixers, they failed to build their stars around. Vucevic, Oladipo and Gordon just couldn’t hold against the tenacity of other teams hence their lack of success to this day.

    Oladipo and Tobias Harris. Two players Orlando should have kept and developed. I’ve always felt that many teams don’t get anywhere because there is no continuity. Hopefully they can draft Holmgren or Banchero and let this group go through the growing pains together…
