This may sound very, very random but when it comes to wrestler action, we need more things like Roddy Piper and Keith David beating the shit out of each other in Carpenter's They Live.
Now THAT is a classic. John Carpenter forever. I can watch basically any of his movies over and over.
That era of moviemaking is gone and will never return.
Roddy was my favorite Villain in the WWF of my early 80s childhood. Sarcastic, hilarious (perfect comedic timing/improvisation)- I truly consider the 80s era a Golden Age in every art form.
How are you not more famous for your amazingly, thoughtful, insightful, intelligent reviews of cinema? Thank you for your dedication and compelling commentary for all these years 🙏🏽
Peter Griffin's first language.

"I sound like Strickland" 😭😭😭
SLACKER! 😡
Trying to top the big 80's monster truck energy of the original is an almost impossible task but this new Road House is watering down the drinks. It's literally: "No sweetie we're not going to watch the original Road House, we have Road House at home".
Your review surprised me; it was not what I was expecting from you. For me, this movie delivered dialogue on par with ‘The Room’ (“Oh hi Johnny. You’re my favourite customer.” “Thanks a lot, bye.”) and character motivations occurring within a bizarro alternate universe akin to a Florida dive-bar version of ‘Showgirls’. Amusing and entertaining, but from a ‘so bad it’s almost good’ perspective.
When the camera's focus was on Jake, his talent elevated the movie to the big screen! When it was pointed at anyone else the movie was streaming content.
Watched it today and said essentially the same thing to my wife. It felt like Jake was slumming it.
Doug Liman’s talent as a director was completely invisible, as well.
You're really being too generous here.
Insightful take on McGregor’s fall from grace
Doug Limon directed the Borne Identity.
Bourne supremacy is Paul Greengrass, who kind of brought the shaky cam into commercial action for a while after….
The shaky cam gets a bad rap now, but honestly it can be effective for certain situations. Just has to be used well.
@@ssssssstssssssssIt can, of course, but not in the way it was used in the Bourne series by Greengrass. It was too much, too chaotic. I know what he wanted to do with it, but he went too far. It made the action and even some normal scenes less readable.
Shaky cam is nothing new in cinema. Greengrass didn’t invented it. But it has to be used with focus and restraint. Slapping it to the whole movie makes it just chaotic and ironically a bit boring.
Greengrass is a much better director than Liman
I love that original roadhouse… from 1989. Yeah I remember getting the VHS when I was in my teens and it being one of my favorite Patrick Swayze performances and I definitely want to see what they are doing with this one. I actually got to meet a con, one of Brad, Wesley’s Anthony De Longis.
This movie was so bad. It was just dumb and boring. Terrible acting, cringe characters, and a horrible plot. Hard to believe this was the same director who did the excellent Edge of Tomorrow. It never should have been named Roadhouse.
Okay I just saw an ad for this. Conor Macgregor looks absolutely ridiculous on the screen. To think he could even come close to matching the smarmy contempt of Ben Gazzara’s original villain is laughable. Gazzara had a way of making you love the parts where he was on the screen; more importantly, he left you wanting more. All I saw was a commercial and I couldn’t wait for Macgreggor to get off my TV.
No sex. No sleaze. No monster trucks. No bear. No Wade Garrett. No real bad guy. No male grape threats. No throat ripping. Massive disappointment.
First again!
And I DID NOT know you were a MMA fan and I follow on IG! amazing
my stories during fight week tend to be a good indication.
Watch her stories when Sean Strickland is fighting.
Love the channel . Suprised you haven't reviewed a Bette Davis Film before @deepfocuslens
@@kindlefanbooks If I do one, it's gotta be All About Eve.
@deepfocuslens I really think you would like The Little Foxes because she is a strong woman in that film but you truly desire to review All About Eve I understand.
I thought the main actor's performance could have been replaced by CM Punk and nobody could have told the difference.
Haven’t seen the film but your review has inspired me to do so. My fellow countryman Conor McGregor being described as a sun burnt orangutang had me in stitches. My only experience of McGregor was seeing him striding down a street in Dublin some years ago wearing a suit two sizes too small for him and giving the impression that the street was his personal property. He should have seemed comical but in fact he had charisma. He could well become a movie star.
Waitaminute. Do you shoot these videos in reverse? I just noticed the books on your bookcase
Great insight, great review, as always. Maggie, i would love to see your All of Us Strangers review...
Doug Liman only made the FIRST Bourne movie. all of his action movies are shot really well, from Mr and Mrs Smith, to Edge Of Tomorrow, to this one. It was Paul Greengrass who implemented the shaky cam.
I've been watching your channel a long time and never would have guessed you were a hardcore UFC fan 😂 I kind of washed out with Shogun / Silva / Jones / McGregor and feel like the same star power just doesn't exist. Maybe I'll get back into it eventually!
"here's the thing about Conor McGregor, guys... - I sound like Strickland "
😲
Okay it's official, you're a UFC fan👏🤩
Great breakdown.
Roadhouse 2024 was great!
I hope nobody was expecting an Oscar winning performance from either cast.
🤔
This was a burger and fries combo. It's exactly what it said it was going to be.
Perfect description of how to watch the original. A lot of guys say , if they’re switching around on cable at night , and Roadhouse is on , just put down the remote. Because they’re watching the rest of the movie.
You’re a UFC fan , wow. You’re just full of surprises. Would you agree that GSP , Jon Jones and Khabib are the top three ?
I was shocked she said she was a MMA fan.....I mean SHOCKED. I will have to admit the internet really has taught me how wide variety people are out there. There are so many times I assume certain people would never like something and this proves me wrong.
You summed up connor so well
The original villain was one dimensional as well
It ain't supposed to be Shakespeare
I just saw the film. It wasn't bad. McGregor is a good villain.
He plays a good douche, because he is one.
I didn't think I would have as much fun as I did when I started this film up yesterday. Liman and his team took the frame work of the original and did their own thing, and from what I could see, they had an absolute blast with this film. Yeah Connor Macgregor was silly as hell in the film, but the silliness just added to the fun of the rest of the film. Film didn't take itself seriously and they turned into the absurdity. In this day and age, this is a type of film that has been absent in cinema and I kind of want more bonkers, fun films like this.
Enjoyed your review! I thought that Conor did okay with character that he was supposed to be. The end of this movie was a bit crazy...
Hi can you make a video about the recent film “the father” it stars Anthony Hopkins as an Alzheimer’s sufferer and present a surreal world of seeing his world in his eyes. It had lots of emotional impact when I saw the expressions of the actors in theatre and I don’t know if you’ve seen it but I’d love to see your thoughts
You're the best Maggie, so many reviews/channels/podcasts talking about this movie talk about being UFC fans or going as far to say MMA fans then continue to speak utter hogwash about Conors current state, calling him an undefeated champion, he's still champion, 'hasn't been beat in the UFC' like his last noteworthy win wasn't 8 years ago at this point, the guy hasn't defended a belt one time in his career.
It has almost nothing to do with the movie its just such a niggling little annoyance amongst all these reviews for people trying to stretch their cool guy cred its such a wave of fresh air to have someone who knows what they're talking about in their own interests
I'm hopeful for this one but I do really wish it would've gone for a theatrical release
In regards to CGI, I would argue for myself by stating that Rogue One, the Mandalorian, Andor and the first Star Wars movies were more entertaining to me, because of the lack of CGI. Not to say that it was not in the Mandalorian and Andor, but it was balanced out by the realism also. I think the fight, between Obi Wan and Vader in Kenobi series was good, because it looked more realistic also. I simply don't understand remakes. Creativity has to be original. They lack creativity, so they are just copying now to keep that movie industry above water.
What did you think of the original
Liman directed The Bourne Identiy (my favorite of the Bourne films), not The Bourne Supremacy, which was directed by Paul "shakycam" Greengrass.
i actually thought the third act was when the movie came into it's own for me, i feel it's where the movie fully embraced the over the top bravado and gruffness that the earlier acts didn't fully capatilize on but the dalton character and his so called "inner darkness" felt so soapy and tryhard for me, he really goes from charming affable leading man to morally gray antihero from one scene to the next. still, it was a pretty enjoyable experience and it might really resonate with some people but i agree with you that it got more and more sloppy the more it went on, excited to see your review of ufc 300
I was a cooler/bouncer for several years and the original Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze was pretty much the story of my life minus the throat ripping. I could tell you waaay better stories than the remake which I'm my opinion was waaay over exaggerated
Loved this review.
Maggie, who are some of your favorite MMA fighters?
The jarring thing about the movie that gave me pause, more than some lazy plot points and Jake's 1,000 yard stare, were specifically 2 supporting cast actresses. Can we all guess?
Just finished watching your Zodiac review from 6/7 years ago. Do you ever age? 😂🔥
"Mixed bag" is being generous here. Even for a popcorn movie not intending to win any awards, it has too many fails to be worth anyone's time.
You're probably a pretentious liberal.
“He has twitchy Cagney energy” - cocaine
yes...but it's also just in his movements. He's always moved in a certain way.
@@deepfocuslensplzzzzzzzz Maddie watch and review Ship of Theseus available free on RUclips with English subtitles
I would love to hear you collaborate with Chris Gore.
I sat down to watch this last night and really liked it. In fact, I think it’s better than the original.
To me, it seems like if they wanted to do this well they needed to set it in a place that has stopped in time, like rural Appalachia. Not a resort.
McGregor is Mickey from Snatch.
Fresh drop! Doug liman joint
The original was very cartoony, family guy understood that which is why the meme became so popular.. This remake picks up the baton and really runs with it.. but your review is so dead on.. Love it.. 💕
Could you check out dream scenario?
You are into psychology so I think you will love to talk about this one.
Do a review for the sweet east!
'It's fine and fun, and a little confused.' I've been called that 😔
It's so silly that even after the mainstream success of The Raid movies, the Netflix Daredevil, John Wick and so on, so many big movie directors just go "aah we'll just do any old shit for the fight scenes, no-one'll care."
Please review Heaven's Gate 1980
I actually agree that weirdly, this wasn't the right role for conor in that he's sort of matured past it recently, which is weird as fuck to say -- but i think you are right
It was really good for his 1st ever movie
One thing Hollywood has to stop is making every movie over 2 hours long, this remake isn't the worst be any means but it's pretty meh, it lacks the charm of the original and I think this movie will be forgotten pretty quickly.
Hollywood: Come up with original stories/screenplays instead of remaking old ones.😠
James Cagney comparison is spot on!
I enjoyed it too. Found myself laughing out loud a bunch of times.
The fight scene in The Killer was top notch.
Can't remember the last time I was unapologetically more critical than Maggie.
Didn't have as much of a problem with McGregor's performance as with Gyllenhaal's soft voice, which, for the most part, just wasn't congruent with the gruffness and toughness of his chiseled body and manhandling. Probably the least convincing I've ever seen him.
The worst offender, however, was the rat lady from "Suicide Squad". Just vapid soul-sucking energy and awful line delivery.
The script was silly and pedestrian at best, brought everything to a cringe-worthy stop at worst.
Cool fights that, in the final fight scene, felt a bit cheap whenever they were filmed on that wide-shot camera.
Surprisingly, Doug Liman didn't do justice to the silly 80s original. A generous 6/10
I know the obvious moment of conors downfall was the khabib fight but id say it was the Mayweather debacle, he joined the circus and was nevef really the same after it.
I saw a clip of Connor the other day and he looked incredibly strung out. Very sad.
Hey Maggie, did you watch the post credits?😆😆😆
Just imagine if they could somehow combine UFC with figure skating.
Don't give me any ideas.
great analysis! just watched this movie, conor mcgregor made me so uncomfortable, every second he was on screen verged on body horror for me.
Conner loves Grapes……. Just ask his girls
Swayze has a magnificent on screen charisma - something I think Gyllenhaal lacks.
I think it's Jake's product of fear :Þ
I agree, Swayne was talented actor and a movie star. I think Jake is talented actor, but I don't see him as a movie star.
That's a shame, the trailer was cut in a way that made McGregor look good. I guess they only highlight his 1 or 2 decent lines for the trailer.
maybe Cagney in White Heat, I'll give ya that.
I've already watched it twice.
My thoughts: I like the change in setting the bar to Florida, giving it a Florida Noir vibe. I enjoyed the humor in the first half of the film, particularly with the young girl giving her metatextual spin on the movie's plot being like a western. The movie misses what I thought was one of the best parts of the original: Sam Elliott's 'Wade Garrett'. The romance between Dalton and the doctor is so undeveloped that it's disappointing because, let's face it: the hero has to fuck the girl. Toward the end it got ridiculous with Dalton making the yacht explode and I agree with Maggie's characterization of the fight scenes in the climax being too CGI heavy. There's just too many close-ups and I always thought fight scenes should be filmed mostly like the old Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers dance scenes, from head to toe. 😉
"Let me see the blood. Let me see the sweat."
Awesome.
"Ma'am, this is a Wendy's".
Pain don't hurt, but this movie did.
OK, I've had mixed feelings on the making of a remake. But, I'll risk it, based on your review.
Didn't expect the waif like reviewer to be such a big MMA fan. The world is full of surprises. The funnier part of the film is Conor McGregor's inability to play Conor McGregor on screen. I kind of lost respect for him when he kicked the crap out of the Miami Heat team mascot and sent the hapless mascot with costume to the hospital in a stunt gone wrong. Both comical and sad at the same time.
The thing that made Road House the original work was two supporting actor. Jeff Healey the blind Canadian blues musician with very funny gags and Sam Elliot who makes every movie better.
Didnt know youre a ufc fan 💪

BROWN HOUSE!..
I kind of liked to. The gangsters son was cool cause you know he was a brat and his relationship with his other gangs. I love Doug Limon.
This was a very enjoyable review! Please continue.
Yeah, but how does compare to Family Guy's Road House? 😉
Do ya thing Ma.
Please review Late Night with the Devil
Didn't Doug Liman interview Elon Musk the other day?
The original was a real balls in the mouth experience!
Yo you're UFC fandom gobsmacked me when I saw you Liked an IG of Sean Strickland ball busting Ian Garry. Very pleasant surprise!
Please review Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.
I heard there was no shirtless tai chi or throat rips, so whats the point?
2024. Everything is BIGGER, LOUDER, STUPIDER. Like you enjoyed first half of movie until it becomes unwatchable with boat scenes worse than "Speed 2". (Your James Cagney comparison spot on).
Not gonna lie I got a little crush on you lol yeah you're pretty and have style.. it's your intellect and level of awareness with a bad ass personality. Now you love UFC ha unicorn vibes 😜
"And then Conor McGregor had to show up" has been my feeling for years. His acting is terrible when he pretends he's going to fight again so I don't even want to imagine how bad he is in this movie.
The remake feels like everyone was just slogging through their lines with an aura of "Can I go home now?" Conor walks through the entire movie like he's got a cucumber shoved up his butt, which explains why he's smiling in every scene. It was bad, but not in a so bad it's good kinda way, it was just bad.
It's weird when the fight scenes are the worst part of an action movie. I hated how the camera whipped around all the time. But yes, a decent enough watch when you come home at 4am drunk.
U must be mma fan
How did u got into the sports ha didn’t know your into thst
On the Connor MCGregor character. I really appreciate a bad guy who doesn't run his mouth. It looks like they did the complete opposite.
Conner has mad cocaine energy.
For me the movie displayed that Dalton doesn't like when he loses control, he's filled with rage and starts becoming someone he doesn't want to be.
However in the last act he goes from killing that guy to calmly putting him on ice, to calmly shooting his dead corpse on the beech in front of the cop while calmly saying 'once I get pissed I can't let go'. So it's not just when he loses control. I think this version of Dalton is more of a psychopath then the one portrayed by Patrick Swayze.
I notice you've been sitting at that bookcase for over 7 years. Are you okay? Are you being held captive? Did someone chain you up and force you to do movie reviews? Are you under house arrest? Blink if you need help.
👌🏻... 🤣🤣🤣
it wasnt bad, conor acting was ok for first time kinda cringe idk if he was tryna be american or irish at times with the accent and that hump back lol. the fights were decent felt too much cgi.
Films shouldn't remake / touch:
Roadhouse / Point Break/ The Crow..🙄
Lol i did not know you were a UFC fan. My friend is and he likes to say that if you ever see a movie tie-in from UFC, it will be the worst pos imaginable. Wonder how rare the ufc/cinephile hybrid is
Did anyone see the shitty direct to dvd Roadhouse 2?
