The best part of Rise of Skywalker for me is when Rey says her name is Skywalker there was a guy a couple rows behind me that perfectly filled the silence before the swelling music by flatly saying “fuck you” to the screen. It made the whole experience worthwhile for.

Nice to see Return of the Jedi ranking high, it usually gets placed lower. Yeah it has goofy Ewoks and the story is a little wobbly sometimes, but when I was a kid watching that original trilogy, the space battle blew me away. Plus it also had the epic Luke/Darth battle going on at the same time.

The relationship development between Luke and Vader/Anakin is so brilliantly written - mainly through clever subtext hinting at Vader’s shifting loyalty - that it totally makes up for the film’s flaws IMO.

Here's some perspective from someone who lived it in real time. It colours my ability to assess the films objectively, but might be interesting to you.
On Christmas of 1976, I went to see a re-release of 2001 in 70mm. I had just turned 12. At that screening, 2 things happened, I saw 2001 in all its glory, and it remains one of my favourite films to this day. I also saw my absolute favourite film up to that point in my life, the 2minute trailer for Star Wars. That trailer left me gobsmacked, finally a movie that fulfilled the promise of sci-fi, full of action and amazing special effects and cool art direction and lasers and a laser sword (!) and Alec Guiness and even a touch of romance, as the girl kissed the boy before they swung Tarzan style across an an abyss. In the interim between then and the opening of the film, which i already knew was going to be my favourite movie, I read the novelization, with the Ralph McQuarrie illustration, probably six times.
On opening day, I had my mom drop me off at noon, for the first show at a cinema in Montreal where she was travelling for business . The theatre was mostly empty. I was a bit disappointed, because I missed the relationship between Biggs and Luke, which felt like the emotional core of the book to me, a young fella separated from his best friend and their joyful reunion. I stayed for the next 3 showings, and over the next year, saw it a total of 40 times in the theatre. I could recite the whole movie from memory. My friends and I were already making super 8 films before this, based on the aesthetic and excitement of Space 1999 and Logans Run, and then we became obsessed with Star Wars, in a time when there was no merchandise to buy, no models, no figurines, nothing. Just the Ralph McQuarrie portfolio.
Then, a funny thing happened. Between the release of Star Wars and Empire, a little film called Alien came out. The trailer is still one of the greatest ever made, and I was there on opening day. A leap forward in sci-fi for my young brain, and by this time I was also becoming more aware of the history of cinema in general, and so was able to appreciate what Ridley Scott was doing - I was already a fan after seeing The Duellists. So much happened between 77 and 80, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hinter, even Kagemusha, so by the time Empire came out, I was not the wide-eyed 12 year-old I had been. I saw it once, liked it, but it didn't measure up to Alien, or any of the other exciting films i'd seen over the previous few years. I saw it once in the theatre, By the time Return of the Jedi came out, well Blade Runner had been released, and Return seemed hopelessly corny to me, a dumb kid's movie. i felt like cinema had moved on,
Now, when I watch the original Star Wars, I am hyper aware of the flaws I didn't notice when i was 12, why Alec Guinness was so embarrassed by the dialog, Harrison Ford's famous "Just cuz you can type it George" quip, and just how much of a pastiche it really is, borrowing liberally from Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Dune, Flash Gordon. The Battle of Britain etc etc, Taking nothing away from the special effects of course, which built on Douglas Trumbull's work on @001 and Silent Running, but they were an evolution, rather than the revolution that was Trumbull's work on 2001. In truth i think that American Graffiti is Lucas's strongest and most original film. And as for Lucas's famous drive up the PCH from LA to Marin where he supposedly conceived all nine of the films, I don't think he knew that Leia was Luke's sister. I believe he thought Vader was maybe his dad, but then ran out of space to put that in the first film, so. it ended up in the sequel that he had no idea he was going t get to make.
Everything after has been diminishing returns for me. So sure, Empire is the best constructed of the films, although the cliuffhanger ending is a aggravating, but Star Wars is still the sentimental favourite for me. The rest of them are equally terrible in different ways. Which is why my Star Wars list is 1. Star Wars 2. Rogue One 3. Solo - all three of them are fun genre adventure stories, which is what made the original so charming, and the rest of the 9 less so, for me.
Sorry for the novella. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

With TFA, I disagree that the story ended.
Luke saved his father simply because he was his father. He was the perfect Jedi to save the galaxy simply because he was the first Jedi in thousands of years to maintain attachments without falling into darkness.
His father died and could never test or exploit his attachments.
Enter his nephew who is the son of his best friend and twin sister.
Luke trains a family member, something Jedi haven’t done in thousands of years, and fails to create a contingency for if he goes dark. His nephew goes dark, asks Luke essentially trades the life of the Jedi students, several planets and billions of lives by keeping his nephew alive. Similar to how anakin slaughtered similar sets of people.
Now I don’t think TFA should have been made simply because it’s a fan made movie, but I don’t think Luke’s attachments would have made for a good Jedi teacher and subsequently a thriving post empire Jedi academy.
I personally would have Rian direct 7 and establish his own characters and plot. JJ is horrifically horrible at Storytelling.

There's so much Star Wars dreck that I never really made a list, apart from the obvious first three choices.
I 100% agree with Maggie's list in terms of movie quality. The only sentimental exception I'd maybe make is to put "A New Hope" at the top, purely because of its impact on culture, special effects, and American box-office blockbusters. And the binary sunset moment with the John Williams score is what encapsulates Star Wars for me.

As a huge fan who revisits these movies after reading books or watching shows (that are better than the worst movies and can provide new story context through which to view the films), this is how I’d rank them.
    1. A New Hope (I think I just have the most fun with it)
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Revenge of the Sith (The Clone Wars series strengthens the story and characters so much)
    4. The Last Jedi (I’ve liked it since it came out, but haven’t seen it since TROS. I thought it was fun, clever, and anti-fan-service)
    5. Return of the Jedi
    6. Attack of the Clones (yeh it’s pretty bad, but I have a lot of childhood nostalgia for this one and like the variety of adventures and planets, I also do find the cringe romance scenes to be funny-bad)
    7. The Phantom Menace (just more boring than AOTC for me but I also respect it for feeling the most real out of the prequels)
    8. The Force Awakens (the characters are quite well done IMO but the rest of the movie is kinda just annoying and a really bad and unoriginal setup for the trilogy)
    9. The Rise of Skywalker (it hurts even more being someone who was into TLJ’s craziness)
Overall the Skywalker Saga is extremely unbalanced. I find that it has the lowest percentage of quality compared to other Star Wars media.
Edit: adding my ranking of the series and anthology films
    1. Andor (legitimately the best thing Star Wars has ever done)
    2. The Clone Wars (some episodes are bad but overall the amount of great stories, world building, and character development completely changed the prequel era for me)
    3. The Mandalorian (the return to the western and samurai inspirations is a lot of fun, Season 2 is hit or miss with an over reliance on cameos)
    4. Rebels (no quite as good as The Clone Wars but mostly enjoyable)
    5. Solo (call me crazy but I love this movie, it’s very fun for me even with eye-rolling fan-service moments)
    6. Obi-Wan Kenobi (low budget feeling and uneven writing but overall it connects the originals and prequels and makes them much more cohesive)
    7. The Bad Batch (a good first season that will hopefully get better and feel more meaningful in the future)
    8. The Book of Boba Fett (3 super good episodes and the rest is a giant mess)
    9. Rogue One (strong visuals and action, weak characters that have been improved through other media)
    10. Resistance (I enjoy it as a silly kids cartoon, but have limited appreciation for something made for a very young audience)

I grew up with the prequels, so I have a soft spot for them and revenge of the sith is the best in the franchise for me personally. Revenge of the Sith just not only has the cool light saber battles but also has the best emotional story in my opinion, just the tragedy of Anakin's turn to the dark side and the fall of the jedi, awesome ranking though.

Great video !! I agree with your list. Just a few things I’ll add …
    Empire - truly the best.
Hope - it all started here.
Return - had Gary Kurtz produced this as he did previous two, the movie would have been much better.
Revenge - the opera scene is the best part of the movie.
Phantom - pod racing was exciting and after 16 years, I loved it. Oh. And Maul !!!
Attack - Lee as Dooku. Loved him and his character.
Force - I enjoy Rey. Love Harrison’s humor. But a repeat of Hope.
Last - the scene with Rey and Ben joining temporarily. Great scene.
Rise - when the Emperor’s eyes glow once again, that was great.
Andor has my attention now. I’m rewatching the series 😊

    @realDialFforFilm Год назад +37

Nice video, Maggie. I guess I'll participate with a ranking of my own.
    1. The Empire Strikes Back (No brainer here. The most well-rounded film of the franchise, with all the mystical adventure we would want but with a darker edge that pushes into new territory. Also, keeping in mind that this was a sequel to the biggest movie of all time, it's all the more satisfying knowing that they didn't just play it lazily, and they really went for something more.)
    2. A New Hope (This film has my favorite singular moments in the franchise, the Binary Sunset in particular. But it is flawed in certain parts, which makes it more flawed than ESB. That said, the stuff that's great is the stuff of legends. It's a warm-hearted love letter to adventure movies of the past, and that passion comes through.)
    3. Return of the Jedi (Easily the weakest of the original three. The narrative elements are sloppy, and the writing gets bogged down pretty severely with a lack of tension between the heroes. And the style goes lighter and kid-friendly; those damn Ewoks are stupid. That said, the Star Wars journey is still there, and when it goes into its edgier content, it's great. Palpatine is possibly my favorite character of the franchise.)
    4. The Last Jedi (I'll be frank, my passion for this franchise has dwindled pretty considerably, so perhaps that's why the idea of tearing down previously held legacy and critiquing the franchise doesn't bother me. I'm not going to pretend this film is great; it isn't; the flaws are apparent. That said, this film begs the question of how many objective flaws I'm willing to excuse because the film appealed so much to my subjectivity. Through all the good and bad about this film, I'm always fascinated by it, and I'll never get tired of discussing it with people, so long as they're not going overboard with the rage.)
    5. Revenge of the Sith (I always sensed that this was the story Lucas was passionate about. The execution in many areas is flawed, but when this film gets into its groove, it's compelling. The structure, pacing, and progression of scenes felt more like Star Wars than the previous entries. The sense of adventure is more substantial in this, and I do love how morbid it gets towards the end with the Order 66 and Anakin's disfigurement scenes. It could've been better, but it's good enough to work.)
    6. The Force Awakens (I wasn't a fan of it at the time, but especially in hindsight, this movie was a horrible start to the sequel trilogy. The gap between 6 & 7 is never explored, the set-up begs so many questions, and the character dynamics are already screwed up. With that said, unlike the rest of the movies in my ranking, I can't say I was bored or waiting for things to end. The structure, pacing, and escalation of events are at least constructed in a way that feels like a movie.)
    7. The Phantom Menace (This was one of the first movies I ever saw in the theater as a toddler; even back then, I was bored by it. I'm always amazed by people my age who say these were their Star Wars films they grew up with because, holy lord, I want to fast-forward every time I see this. It's a slog to get through, the pacing is slow, and the events are boring as shit because it feels mostly like political gobbledygook and exposition. The characters are so paper thin, and the effects have gotten horrendously bad as time has gone on. That said, some of the creativity of the worlds are interesting, and the climactic lightsaber fight with Darth Maul is still pretty cool.)
    8. Attack of the Clones (Pretty much everything I said about TPM, but the material in this movie is cringe-inducing. As hard as I try, I cannot find many positive things to say about this movie. The creativity of the world is there in moments, but then there are horribly designed set pieces like the 50s Diner and the Night Club. The action isn't up to snuff to make anything worth it. And considering the events of this film are meant to develop Anakin's character into the dark side, it hurts even more to watch this laughable execution of his forbidden romance and the loss of his mother. For the longest time, this was my pick for the worst Star Wars movie. That is until...)
    9. The Rise of Skywalker (This was the final nail in the coffin for me. I quit Star Wars as a fan after this movie, and I haven't looked back. It's the ultimate example of having your cake and eating it, too, as well as not having the integrity to stand by their decisions. They greenlight Rian Johnson's ideas as if they were willing to commit to them only to try and distance themselves away from them as much as possible, essentially using Rian and TLJ as scapegoats. If you weren't going to stick to your guns, then, by all means, shoot Rian's script down and tell him to do things differently. But they signed off on TLJ, which I was personally fine with, but if that's the decision, then stand by it. Instead, they convolute the story and franchise to such a degree that everything is fucked beyond repair. Even trying to ignore legacy and evaluate this movie on a fundamental level, it's damn near impossible to find any element that's passable. The chain of events, character decisions, and continuity are irredeemably inconsistent. I don't envy JJ Abrams for having to be in this situation; I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be in it, either. I'm willing to believe this isn't even remotely the movie he would've wanted to make, which is why I'm not surprised that it looks like he's sticking to producing now. I bet having to make whatever the hell the studio commanded him to make soured him on the idea of directing. And it's good to see the people involved are moving on to better things. But my God, rarely have I ever been this disheartened by a movie-viewing experience.)

Totally agreed with your assessment of the films, especially The Force Awakens (TFA), The Last Jedi (TLJ), and The Rise of Skywalker (TRS). All three served to end the Sky Walker storyline but did so while attempting to be fresh and subverting expectations. TFA was about elevating women while degrading men including Luke. TLJ was a total redo with a different director. TRS was a last-minute course correction for TLJ with Palpatine's appearance ruining the sacrifice Darth Vader make in The Return of the Jedi. All in all, three movies that completely disrespected fans, destroyed Star Wars legacy, and made the prequels look like masterpieces.

The first two Star Wars movies were the only ones to be filmed with anamorphic Panavision C-Style lenses. Return of the Jedi looks more "flat", lacking the same depth of field. By the time Jedi went into production, Lucas was already thinking in less cinematic terms, targeting a VHS release where the picture would be cropped and finer details would be missing. Empire marked the end of the classic way of filmmaking with Lucas returning to his teacher, Kershner, for guidance.

As for the more recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens is fine if you had not seen New Hope for a number of years. In that case, the new movie resonates with slightly hazy memories. TFA seems considerably worse if you have watched New Hope recently.
For The Last Jedi, well, "... going for gutting the original Star Wars Legacy,...the original Star Wars Story" is an excellent way to put it. For those of us with decades of fond memories of the original trilogy, it felt like a slap in the face. If his movie did not concern a well known and loved franchise, it would have been fine. It reminded me a little of a Robot Chicken sketch of a children's show which has the generic plot of "do something out of character to shock the audience". I have come to view Johnson like one of those movie villains who thinks that he is smarter than everyone else in the world, but it turns out that his plans have so many flaws that you know he is not. Glass Onion cemented that opinion for me
I put Rise OF Skywalker in front of Last Jedi because is just disappointed me, whereas The Last Jedi made me angry and seemed that it intended to ruin the franchise for the future.

    Rogue One
The Last Jedi - I liked the Rey and Kylo story. I think in the future it will be reappraised and may go up a few notches.

Fascinating. I think the first hour is easily the best part of Star Wars, its disorientation is in many ways the key to the appeal of the whole thing. What's less interesting is when we start focusing on humans, who are basically just avatars whom action happens to - largely set in motion by the non-human characters.

    Hey, pretty decent ranking!
    Here’s mine:
    9. Last Jedi - never gonna forgive them what they did to Luke and for the enormous plot holes they left out. The characters that had so much potential (Finn was turned into a background character when he could have been the new Jedi, phasma was underused and barely even did anything repeating the force awakens’ problem, Hux went from a Space Hitler to a buffoon, an incompetent joke) were just done dirty.
    8. Rise of Skywalker - disappointing conclusion, that Rey Skywalker scene was disappointing and did not age well.
    7. Force awakens - set up characters with so much potential to waste them, just feels like an unoriginal copy of a new hope, there was no plan, they only cared about fanservice and nostalgia over good storytelling and writing. Rey even feels like a one dimensional character
    6. Phantom menace - love the world building and the score and the final battle, but I feel like the pacing and cgi could have been better. I didn’t really mind jar jar. He was sometimes funny, other times annoying, but I didn’t hate him. I also felt bad for Ahmed Best bc he dedicated his life on that work.
    5. Attack of the Clones - I love the setup for Clone Wars and I loved the fight between Anakin, Obi wan, and Yoda against Dooku. But there are some issues… the cgi looks like a ps5 gameplay at some points and the dialogue is a bit cringey, particularly Christensen, which I feel like he improves in Revenge of the Sith. He’s not bad, just Lucas himself said that writing dialogue isn’t very easy for him. Still, not a bad movie, but definitely flawed
    4. New hope - now, I love the movie. I bit slow compared to the other OT films imo, but perfect start.
    3. Return of the Jedi - felt like the perfect conclusion to the OT.
I cannot decide between 1 and 2; empire or revenge because I love them so much. Empire has a timeless narrative. Meanwhile Revenge of the Sith makes the setups the first two prequels made pay off and it feels like the most emotionally resonant Star Wars film. It’s great start to end, Hayden’s acting is so much better than in AOTC because he was menacing as Vader. The CGI was also a lot better than the first two.
These are just my personal opinions.

Boomer here. I saw the original Stat Wars when it was just another night at the movies, was underwhelmed because it didn’t match the hype but all in all was satisfied. I enjoyed it. When I saw ROTJ, no one really complained about the Ewoks as much, we just had a good time. By this point I was riding the SW bandwagon and having fun.
Prequels? The first two were bad but at least were connected. Lucas knew where he wanted to go.
Sequels? They had no idea what they were doing. Fan service? Mary Sue? How about a cohesive trilogy that didn’t subvert our heroes? Also the destruction of Luke and Solo as characters matching the vilifying of men in the movies lately.

It is also the most important, as it started t all, Empire is the second most important, as it showed there can be more films. The Phantom menace is my favorite prequels for the reasons you mentioned. It has a certain innocence and filmic grand scope. The reason I dislike Revenge of the sith is because it feels so unbalanced in how mean it gets. While also feeling like an apology. • @Webhead123
    @Webhead123 Год назад +1

I think your rankings are pretty spot-on. There was once a time (oh, such an innocent time!) when I thought things couldn't get worse for Star Wars than Attack of the Clones. The prequel films may have been frustrating and full of disappointment...but at least they didn't outright insult the audience the way the sequel trilogy eventually would. And while I agree with you that The Last Jedi at least has a certain creative ambition that the other two films in its trilogy lack, its rabid, caustic hatred for the ideas and characters at the core of the Star Wars story actually makes me angry. It took barely a minute into the film for me to realize that I had no respect for the story that was being told here. When Rey hands the lightsaber to Luke and he just tosses it flippantly over his shoulder, that was all it took for me. It was a big middle finger to the audience and I hated the film for it. Remember....it wasn't *Luke's* lightsaber that she handed to him. She handed him his *father's* lightsaber. A symbol of his own family lineage and a memento of the man that HE F---ING SAVED FROM THE DARK SIDE. Not only someone who would have been very personally important to Luke but representative of one of the most pivotal conflicts in the entire history of the galaxy. But no, writer/director Rian Johnson decided to subvert for the sake of subversion, even when it made absolutely no sense within the context of any character or story element, or even had any form of arch or payoff. I'm sorry, Rian, but it was just conceited, egocentric writing.
And as much as I thought (again, such innocent times) that The Last Jedi would mark the absolute bottom of the barrel (how could it possibly get more insulting than that dumpster fire)...we get Rise of Skywalker (a film I actually avoided seeing for over 2 years, so annoyed I was with Last Jedi). And this may be the hardest part of ranking the sequel films for me. While Rise of Skywalker was an undeniable hurricane of wet garbage and I feel had no redeeming qualities whatsoever...I can say that it didn't leave me feeling personally *attacked* the way The Last Jedi did. So there's the rub. Which film do I call worse? The one with grand ambition that sought to actively offend and burn down what makes up Star Wars in the first place...or the one that was nothing more than a creatively bankrupt corporate merchandising vessel? The latter feels predatory and the former feels abusive. Truth be told, there are no winners here. I'm going back to sticking with my sentiment that there hasn't been a Star Wars film since 1983. It's a much happier world to live in!
    My personal ranking:
    1) ESB, 2) RotJ, 3) ANH
    4) RotS, 5) TPM, 6) AotC
    7) TFA, 8) TLJ, 9) RoS

THe reason why The Empire Strikes Back was different and innovative. Was because Dir Irwin Kershner was a devout practicing Buddhist and he pushed George Lucas to put as much of Kershner's spiritual philosophy influenced by Buddhism into the film. How dark side is motivated by greed and power and is spiritually tiny compared to gaining higher levels of consiousness. It was an interesting movie, but also Irwin Kershner is a very skillful movie director and he made his movie not George Lucas's movie. Of course kudos too the 500 other people technicians, artists etc that helped Kershner realise his vision. A movie is the result of the talents of hundreds of people working together as a team to create a movie all putting their ideas in as well. So everybody who worked on the movie no matter how insignificant played their part. But Dir Irwin Kershner deserves the credit because he is the boss the Captain of the team who directs everybody to his vision for Star Wars. You are spot on regarding other star wars movie rankings. Phantom menace onwards really sucks. I remember going to the theatre when it first came out in 1999 and expecting a 1990s version of Empire Strikes Back. Yeah expectations were really high back then instead what we got was a terrible movie typical of the CGI big budget special effects movies of the 1990s with little substance. I remember leaving the theatre really gutted about decline of SW franchise. George Lucas shameless cash grab in the 1990s in reviving Star Wars showed and it had none of the love or artistic integrity of the original trilogy. It was a pathetic movie as were the other sequels and things have not improved at all under Disney. Only bright light was Rogue One that is the only good movie that I liked since the relaunch of SW franchise in 1999 from Fox to Disney. The whole thing was a shameless profiteering excercis first by George Lucas and company and then by Disney and we see the results today. I agree fully with what you say about SW franchise.

VIII and IX, but I did watch Force Awakens on a 4'' screen on a plane once, and I have a hard time seeing how it's supposed to be any worse than Ep. I and II (which I admittedly remember poorly).
Force Awakens was at least competent, flashy, kind of witty, had very decent acting; and you could follow the plot. It was like the cinematic equivalent of a Nickelback song, whereas I remember Ep. II to be more like the sound of 5 bonobo monkeys screaming in unison.

I was such a big Star Wars fan growing up. Saw a New Hope in the cinema when it first came out, and was so excited when the Phantom Menace came out almost 25 years later, and then so utterly disappointed with the film and the direction that Lucas took, making the film cartoony and FX driven, and dropping most of the story. I saw the next two hoping that they would be better, but they were just worse, and I never even saw the rest of the films. It even made me a bit disgusted with the whole culture around Star Wars and its die hard fans. I can't believe grown adults would defend the later films. The only outlier to this was Rogue One, which I thought felt more like the original trilogy.

I think most franchises outside of the horror genre became a franchise because their second was the "Empire Strikes Back" of the series. Very few third films stick the landing, but if the second was the peak, people are willing to sit through decades mediocre films just to get that magic back, myself included.

Empire Strikes Back is the reason why second films don’t suck. For most of history the middle entry of trilogies were always the worst one. Then Empire Strikes Back comes along and shows everyone how to do it. Then the third films disappoint because they aren’t as good as the second one.

    My list would be: 1. TESB, 2. ANH, 3. TLJ, 4. ROTS, 5. ROTJ, 6. TPM, 7. AOTC, 8. TFA, 9. TROS.
Don't come at me, I'm a fan, I have hundreds of toys, I'm sentimental for Return of the Jedi, the first one I saw as a child. I was mad that my parents didn't let me go and watch the first two because I was too young (in their eyes). And yet I was thrilled about The Last Jedi. Yes, it deconstructs the mythos, but it wasn't beyond salvageable at all. I think Trevorrow's version would have been quite good, and it managed to build on TLJ's decisions.
I always found The Force Awakens was the most gutless of the three because it had all the possibilities and yet, it went with the safest options while mocking the original in the process. Attack of the Clones is higher up with me than with most people because I liked the plot about a secret army and an arranged war. The love affair is bland, absolutely. But we sort of knew it had to happen, so at the time it didn't really offend me as much.
And, finally, Rise is just, I don't know, unbearable. It is one of those movies that I think even Hollywood feels embarassed about. They caved to a few loud fanboys on youtube, they let Geeks & Gamers tell them what to do - and ended up looking like fools. Which is probably the only redeeming thing about the movie. Everybody got their little revenge for TLJ, but the thing they got to remember their triumph is something nobody wants to touch again, ever. Toxic waste.

    1. The Empire Strikes Back. Agree with the general consensus. Great story, locations, characters, the best plot twist in cinema history.
    2. Return of the Jedi. I personally I enjoy this more than A New Hope which takes a while to get going. The sequence at Jabba's palace is Saturday morning escapism at its finest.
    3. A New Hope. See above. It's still iconic though.
    4. Attack of the Clones. I dont share the hate of most people for this one. If you take away the cringy love scenes, which aren't that many, it's got a very intriguing story, and some great set pieces such as the chase through the Coruscant skies, the droid factory, the Arena battle, the Yoda vs. Dooku fight. I remember people clapping at the end of this movie.
    5. The Force Awakens. Even though it was a bit derivative, in some ways after the prequels it felt nice to see a movie that recaptured the feel of the original trilogy, a big part of what makes it work for me is Harrison Ford's performance as Han Solo.
    6. Revenge of the Sith. This is basically the whole reason for the prequel trilogy to exist. It's a bit dark and depressing for a Star Wars movie but it sets up A New Hope quite well.
    7. The Phantom Menace. After 16 years this was a crushing disappointment. High kiddie factor with Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd, a lack of relatable characters made this a real dud. It did introduce a lot of new interesting worlds and locations in the SW universe.
    8. The Rise of Skywalker. Preposterous story and ridiculous Mary Sue shit, but I find it slightly more entertaining and watchable than Last Jedi. There are some nice moments like Lando Calrissian's return, I liked that huge snake but the return of the Emperor is such a desperate move.
    9. The Last Jedi. Despicable in how it tries to 'subvert exepectations' of Star Wars traditions, destroys the character of Luke Skywalker, and has a massive woke factor which is the biggest turnoff for me.

Part of my overall feeling of the Star Wars franchise is that at some point Mr. Lucas thought he was a comedian and a socio/political commentator and he's not. At all. The comedy in the firs 3 films worked because it doesn't seem forced. But from the prequels on... it doesn't work. Even the changes he made to the first three don't work that well. Mostly. In my opinion though your 1 and 2 are spot on. I would flip Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi though. It's close. I thought about flipping Clone Wars and Phantom Menace but then Two-Face showed up and flipped his coin so I'll go with what you got. I'm actually flipping Force Awakens with Rise of Skywalker. Why? Because Force Awakens shows a complete lack of effort. They didn't even bother with an original script. It was just a regurgitation of earlier works with very little effort. Even the death of Solo didn't hit as hard as it should have simply because it was so damn predictable. If they can't waste their time to try to make something, anything, why should I waste more of my time to see this stuff? I'm a new subscriber and I really like your work. I may not necessarily agree with your opinions but that's fine.

First thing... I'm 54 so I've seen all Star Wars films in its original movie theatre runs, so my ranking will be not on the technical aspects of them but how I felt watching them at the time I first saw them. I've rewatched most of them several times (except for the Disney sequels) and my ranking has never really changed.
    1. Star Wars
The original, the first... and also my first sci-fi movie at the tender age of 9. And boy did it blow me away. Favorite part: the Leia rescue in the prison especially the trash compactor scene. By the way, the title is not and never was A New Hope, that is only the chapter of the saga, it was released as STAR WARS!!!!!!
    2. Return Of The Jedi
Not as technically well done as TESB but for me, way more fun. To see Luke as a fully fledged and trained Jedi was so awesome. There are so many great parts in this movie; the Jaba part with the rancor, the Sarlac Pit, the barge fight, Leia strangling Jaba, the jungle fight with the Ewoks, and of course the Luke, Vader and Emperor Palpatine confrontation. Favorite part: the barge fight when R2D2 sends Luke's Lighsaber through the air and the game is on.
    3. The Empire Strike Back
Great movie, but I had to knock it down a little because it was a bit too serious for my liking at the time I first saw it. And at that age, I had no clue that there was going to be a sequel and also had no clue what a cliffhanger was so I thought that Han was done for and that really bummed me out. I can appreciate it more today but it's still not as fun for me as ROTJ. Favorite part: Hoth with the incredibly scary AT-AT.
    4. Revenge Of The Sith
The best of the prequel trilogy. I really don't like the acting in either of the prequel movies but in this one it's at least tolerable. I love the way Palpatine really mind fucks Luke into becoming Vader, although it's really weird to see Anakin being called Vader without his mechanized black suit. Best part: The Lightsaber dual between Vader and Kenobi. It's by far, for me, the best one in the whole series.
    5. The Phantom Menace
I generally really enjoyed TPM but Jar Jar Binks and the awful child actor that is Jake Lloyd makes this film almost unwatchable for me. I love Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn and Ewan McGregor's younger Kenoby is also a treat. There are great action sequences and Maul is truly menacing. The whole Gugan battle scene for me was a bit annoying, especially with the previously mentioned Jar Jar, and I'd take little Ewoks over Gugans any day of the week. Favorite part: The Lightsaber dual between Jinn, Kenobi and Maul, especially with that score.
    6. Attack Of The Clones
Now we're getting into real crap... there are very few redeeming qualities in this movie. The acting is some of the worst I've ever seen in such a blockbuster film. The dialogue is so cringy. I was so excited to finally see Yoda use a Lightsaber... just to see him spin and spin... and spin... and spin... you get the gist. So disappointing. Favorite part: Anakin slaughters the Sand People and starts his way to the dark side.
    7. The Force Awakens
Ahhh, the start of the Disney sequels and also the start of the end of Star Wars for me... No Luke, killing Han in this fashion, a Mary Sue that wins a lightsaber dual with someone trained by Luke although she never wielded a Lightsaber before and a complete repeat of the original Star Wars but butchered like hell. The only redeeming qualities of this film are the introduction of Poe Dameron and BB8. Favorite scene: When Han finally shows up to get the Falcon.
    8. The Last Jedi
AKA... The Death Of Star Wars. I still can't bring my head on how bad they did Luke. This is the guy that was able to turn Vader back to the light side and he becomes a bitch hermit because of a dream/vision he had... FUCK YOU!!!! Leai getting thrown in deep space and using the force to keep herself alive and bring herself back onboard.... FUCK YOU!!! That's not how the Force works!!!!! The force draws energy from all living things around you as explained by Yoda in TESB...THERE ARE NO LIVING THINGS IN FUCKING SPACE!!!!! Favorite scene: the end credits.
    9. The Rise Of Skywalker
I did not even see this movie and will never see this movie. Star Wars is dead to me after TLJ. They can take their more diverse, more sensitive of the times crap and stick it where the sun don't shine. I'll always prefer good story telling to preachy woke messaging.
Thank you if you've read of this ranking/ranting all the way through. I'm quite passionate about Star Wars, I've read all the EU novels, all the comics. There are so many great stories to pull from them and to see that utter crap Disney came up with is beyond frustrating to me. As soon as Disney bought the franchise from Lucas and they announced that the EU was no longer canon, I knew Star Wars was in trouble. Luckily I still have all those novels so I can re-read them and enjoy what Star Wars used to be.

ESB: too many, toss up between Luke and Yoda and luke and Vader duel
    RotJ: luke confronting emperor.
    TPM: pod race
    AotC: Django dropping the beat
RotS: opera scene or Obi wan’s speech to BBQ boy.
    TFA: Han confronts Kylo
    TLJ: snoke gets toasted
    RotS2: the end credits.

Pretty much my exact ranking and feelings towards all the Star Wars films. Very detailed breakdown, too! When I first saw Last Jedi I thought it was way worse than Force Awakens, but after seeing all the sequel movies I almost hate Force Awakens the most out of all of them, because it really set up the entire sequel trilogy for failure. It's just a boring remake of A New Hope, with almost zero interesting new ideas, so what could you possibly do with that for two more films? But then Rise of Skywalker is just so objectively bad from a filmmaking perspective that you can't really place it anywhere but last.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Phantom Menace so high, and that you mentioned the cinematography being nice, which I also have always thought myself. The pod race sequence and final lightsaber battle are both peak Star Wars in my opinion.

I remember that Return of the Jedi was the first disappointing Star Wars. The cutesy element of the Ewoks threw it off for me.
