Hey i’m a cook and i’ve used agar many times ..this tip might help: When using agar you want to use approximately 4% weight of your total mixture. So if lets say you have 50g soap, 50g water you want to add 4g of agar. (It can vary depending on the texture you want to achieve, i dont know how soap reacts so it might be more or less.. you can start with less.. and add more if it doesn’t set up.. you will have to bring it back up to a boil though to activate the agar). Also agar is heat activated. It must boil to solidify. So once you disolve it and mix everything together either use the microwave to bring ur mixture to a boil or do it on the stove. Pour in molds quickly as agar sets up fairly fast. Hope this helps! Merry Christmas 🎄
According to what I was told by my old biology lab tech when I was at school - Agar powder should be mixed into room temp water first then slowly brought to the boil to dissolve and simmered for a couple of minutes. If it is put into hot water it tends to clump and does not dissolve properly. Not sure you have used enough but I can't ask our biology tech where I work until next term quantity wise. Agar can also be effected by the pH of what you are adding it to Agar gel/jelly tends to be firmer and crumbles more easily than gelitine ones also agar ones tend to collapse if they are disturbed too much before they are fully set.
made a reply to another comment but Agar is honestly horrible even in cooking becuase of that texture. and its true, you mix it cold, and boil for 2-3 minutes for it to work, it needs heat to activate.
@@bruskedragon I've never had issues with it when cooking. I buy agar agar powder from a Chinese grocer nearby and use it for making vegetarian pana cotta. I also once used it in a batch of marmalade I made that was too liquidy and it turned out fine, just a bit firmer than I'd prefer. But never had it be grainy or have an odd texture.
As a vegetarian can confirm about the texture and the pH thing, I made a rosewater and lime jelly before and the rosewater layer was perfect but the lime layer just didn't set it was mushy which wasn't very pleasant.

Lush uses a seaweed based gelatine substitute, like you said. keeps it 100% vegetarian! its also quite softening on skin and hair, you'll find it in their Veganese conditioner as well :)

Soap jellies are great but I hate dropping them or have them tear in use and losing chunks down the drain. So I had a shower thought - put the jellies in a little mesh drawstring bag. Best thing ever! It still wobbles but you don't drop or lose it. You could make your own out of a delicates washing bag but I went to the pet store (yep, you read that right) and got a small aquarium filter bag. They're mesh drawstring bags and work perfectly.

Carragenen... or how ever you spell it, will solidify BEAUTIFULLY!!! My husband is Jamaican and loves Irish Sea Moss drink. It is weird. Smells. And gels solid!
When you use agar, you got to put it in a liquid that is cold. You stir it till it mixed. After that you heat it up on the stove (keep stirring). To know when the agar is dissolved, the liquid on your spoon should come out smooth ( no very small streaks on the spoon), it should take around 3-6 minutes of boiling. Than you pour it into your mold. It should be solid very quickly, around 20-30 minutes at room temperature but faster if in the fridge. Try again with the agar! Also your should try making jelly with the agar. It delicious, especially coconut jelly!
You are so funny! Here is a formula that works well. I made two different formulas this weekend and tried them both in the shower and both work really well. You need to use Iota carrageenan and you need to use surfactants (detergents) no Castile soap. Here is one formula that works well. Phase A- Propylene glycol- 10% Glycerin-10% Iota carrageenan- 3% Phase B- Distilled or deionized water- 21.5% Stepan mild LSB- 18% Coco Glucoside- 7% Phase C( below 170f)- Capryl Caprylyl Glucoside- 1% Jeecide cap-5- 1% Fragrance-2% Water soluble colorants- 0.5% Weigh phase A ingredients into a sauce pan and mix together with a whisk and set on stove but no heat yet. Either heat your water in a kettle and add to the surfactant and mix with a fork gently to mix but not make too bubbly. Or put the water and surfactants into a beaker or heat proof container and put into a pot of water to use as a double boiler and heat surfactant mixture to about 120-130f. When that is heating up put phase C ingredients into a container and set aside. Turn burner to med-high and slowly pour heated surfactant mix into Phase A a little at a time a mix well with whisk, once you are finished pouring phase B into A, keep mixing with a whisk and heat until mixture has become thicker and has been heated to at least 170f. I hold it at this temp for about 5 minutes while constantly stirring and scrapping the edge of the pot to keep everything heated evenly. Add phase C into pot and mix well. Now it's time to pour into silicone molds as fast as you can because it will solidify quickly and your very last pour might be a little chunky or blob like. Completely cool and take out of molds after 4 or more hours and put on a plate or tray. I found putting them in the freezer for a couple of hours helped the feel of them, but it's not necessary. But it does feel nice to use them straight from the freezer.
I did a jelly soap and I put gelatin and hand soap together and it worked amazing and it lasted 2 months before they dried out and I use little ice cube molds well you know for the molds!
Gosh dang do I love your videos! You are such a delightful person and I'm so glad you share that energy with us. Happy New Year to you and your family!
I did one a while back and it was pretty easy but can't remember which recipe I used. I'm a decently novice soap maker who makes it for ourselves and as gifts. My son loved them BUT they were decently soft. We used unflavored natural gelatin and colored body wash, which is thicker and some silicone molds.
Hey Katie I’ve been watching your videos for a few months (feels like years) And I had a break from this channel but now due to #12DaysOfSoapmas I’ve come back and your personality is just so friendly and beautiful !!!
Hi Katie love you videos. We use agar agar in our microbiology lab. To solidly i think you will have to boil it until the agar powder is completely mixed and then cool it. It should work then. We use agar agar plates which is like a jelly. Don't give up on this idea
Hiyaaa from Malaysia. I love watching u and ur vids. U r a ray of sunshine! Some of the vids are hilarious and I binge watching them on my cloudy days. Thank you and Merry XMas in advance
omg, same! I'm fine if it touches my skin (so far, but I also don't want to risk my allergy getting worse) but ingesting or if it gets near my eyes is just awful. I appreciate that seaweed is good for your skin and hair, but I still want to enjoy things too!!
You can use gelatin sheets just double the amount from the powder after you squeeze the water out. Doesn't smell as strong but does set up better then agar agar. Not a soap maker but I am a pasty chef so I've use most of these gelatins.
I know right? But its so absurd! "Royalty Soaps Farmfresh Christmas Trees A family tradition"?!! (I have not figured out how to do emojis on RUclips, so imagine a couple of laugh-crying smileys please :-) ) I love it, its so weird :-D
The second you combined it all without first putting the agar water back in the microwave to boil i knew it was gonna fail xD been there, i know some people are speculating it's the soap or surfactant and maybe that does matter but the same would have happened without those since the agar wasn't properly activated or whatever
I got excited when you said you were doing a 1:1 exchange for agar agar. Based on every raindrop cake I've ever seen, I knew this would be entertaining. Lol
You're just too cute Katie. We make a Lime jello with cream cheese, you carefully melt the cream cheese and just mix it in with the lime jello, super yummy, actually I literally have to go make it now for Christmas Eve tomorrow 😉
I'm so happy to see this video! I remember seeing that original tutorial on soap jellies like 4 years ago and wanting to try it so badly.... then only taking the leap and actually attempting it earlier this summer. I also tried a Knox gelatin recipe and got the same results. Good golly it was so nasty.......
If you try again with carrageenan, its a learning curve using it! I use it in pastry to make different versions of panna cotta, etc. and it gels super fast. Way faster than you think it will. Blink and it will start being jelly. You just heat it up again very carefully and it becomes liquid-y again, but as you pour it it just cools pretty quickly.
I believe with agar, after you boil the water/agar mixture... you are supposed to simmer it for 1-5 minutes if you use agar powder OR 10-15 minutes if you are using agar flakes for the mixture. Then, you pour the thickened mixture into the mold to set. I use agar flakes to make my vegan cheese and it works with the method above.
My husband who is playing video games/partially listening goes, “wait! Did she figure out a recipe?!” Me, “nope.” Him, “BUT SHE’S THE SOAP LADY?!”

Iota carrageenan- 3%
Phase B-

Stepan mild LSB- 18%
Coco Glucoside- 7%
Phase C( below 170f)-
Capryl Caprylyl Glucoside- 1%
Jeecide cap-5- 1%
Fragrance-2%
Water soluble colorants- 0.5%
Weigh phase A ingredients into a sauce pan and mix together with a whisk and set on stove but no heat yet.
Your curly hair looks so cute! Also, love the bangs 😁
I did a jelly soap and I put gelatin and hand soap together and it worked amazing and it lasted 2 months before they dried out and I use little ice cube molds well you know for the molds!
Thank yoooooouu! For makeing this vid! I was stressed about hearing that Christmas is actually in 4 days.
Hey Katie I’ve been watching your videos for a few months (feels like years)
And I had a break from this channel but now due to #12DaysOfSoapmas I’ve come back and your personality is just so friendly and beautiful !!!
You do your makeup so flatteringly! I know you don’t always do it, neither do I, but I just wanted to pay you that compliment ❤️
Hi Katie love you videos. We use agar agar in our microbiology lab. To solidly i think you will have to boil it until the agar powder is completely mixed and then cool it. It should work then. We use agar agar plates which is like a jelly. Don't give up on this idea
This video was so festive. Right after she used the glitter duster, the lights picked up the glitter in the air and it was all sparkly. 🎄🌟
Just subscribed and you have the absolute type of energy I’m trying to find on this site.
Hiyaaa from Malaysia. I love watching u and ur vids. U r a ray of sunshine! Some of the vids are hilarious and I binge watching them on my cloudy days. Thank you and Merry XMas in advance
I’m glad there’s a substitute for people who want/ need- but for our family, _anything_ seaweed-based is a no-go, as my mother is allergic
omg, same! I'm fine if it touches my skin (so far, but I also don't want to risk my allergy getting worse) but ingesting or if it gets near my eyes is just awful. I appreciate that seaweed is good for your skin and hair, but I still want to enjoy things too!!
Reading this whole coincidentally eating seaweed salad, woah. Sorry for all y'all's allergies 🥺
potato starch can do the job, I've used it to make something similar to a jelly/jam, but I don't know about other uses
You can use gelatin sheets just double the amount from the powder after you squeeze the water out. Doesn't smell as strong but does set up better then agar agar. Not a soap maker but I am a pasty chef so I've use most of these gelatins.
So is no one going mention the absolutely adorable sweat shirt that you need to have in your shop?!
I know right? But its so absurd! "Royalty Soaps Farmfresh Christmas Trees A family tradition"?!! (I have not figured out how to do emojis on RUclips, so imagine a couple of laugh-crying smileys please :-) ) I love it, its so weird :-D
I just spent several minutes trying to locate it, it's so cute! Lol
Nah theyre staff only she said
You never fail to make me laugh! Your so relatable I love it 😆😍
The second you combined it all without first putting the agar water back in the microwave to boil i knew it was gonna fail xD been there, i know some people are speculating it's the soap or surfactant and maybe that does matter but the same would have happened without those since the agar wasn't properly activated or whatever
I haven't watched your stuff in... I dunno, a year maybe? (thanks youtube) and I gotta say, I LOVE how confident you seem on camera! :D
Katie's positive energy never fails to make me smile
I believe with agar, after you boil the water/agar mixture... you are supposed to simmer it for 1-5 minutes if you use agar powder OR 10-15 minutes if you are using agar flakes for the mixture. Then, you pour the thickened mixture into the mold to set. I use agar flakes to make my vegan cheese and it works with the method above.
I think you should try the Carrageenan. They use it in Ebru (paper marbling) to thicken water to float the dyes on.
Let's goooo, never been so early to a video before! 💕💕💕
You get an A+ for effort Katie!!
“Y’all know how I like my sparkles” a woman after my own heart ❤️🤣 except my version is metallic sparkly paint for my sculptures
Thanks for posting this even though it didn’t work. Sometimes the fail videos are even more helpful.
