i've seen him live in Paris a few years ago. A wonderful solo gig. Then I stopped by to get a record signed by him. He was so humble and kind I couldn't believe I was talking to a living legend.
When I heard this song I was transported back to a little cottage in Dorset that I shared with my good friend, Jenny. Oh such good times way back in 1981 to 1984. The smell of Meadowsweet, climbing the iron age fort Maidens Castle at dawn with our employer's 5 dogs, walking through bluebell woods and our mountain of Planxty records that we bought from Collets in London. Such a long time ago but this song brought it all back!
Back in the early eighties I became addicted to Fiona Ritchie's 'Thistle and Shamrock radio production and found these marvelous musicians and many many more. I have become since then a fan of Celtic music and a myriad of various talented folks in that Genre. I am very grateful to all.
I grew up around these legends and to this day, i never tire of them. Humility wonderful stories and great joy. Thank you for your craft and pleasure you'll have shared throughout life's journey. I love you Andy.
The first half is a memory, a clear vision to a different time and place without to question it. A time spent with good weather, rewarding work, spiritual companionship, and missed friends, a beautiful period of time with a balance of nature and civilization, with no chance of lasting forever. The instrumental part feels like raw emotion of memories that need needs to be released. This song created in memory of something beautiful is very powerful, a great example of how art is a key to our experience as human beings.
I've returned to this clip countless times, but have only just know seen this comment. You managed to 'translate' it very well and eloquently. Thank you!
Such a very beautiful song. It creates a little glade in the mind where we can sit together and just be. It's sometimes good to remember that such places and times do exist!
I just went to visit my son who's working in Bucuresti, his flat is in Baneasa - no Green Glade now, no woodpeckers or deer but apartment blocks and a Lidl superstore! Apparently there are a few bits of forest left but such is progress................🙄

Beautiful recording. I am very, very familiar with this tune, but it is amazing to see the people in the audience, and how they were dressed. I would have been nine years old at the time of this performance. I did see him and Paul Brady at the Birchmere (I think?) in Alexandria, Virginia in about 1992, and Andy as a solo performer at the East Ave Tavern in Portland, Oregon in about 1996. He wasn't having a great night, but it was still good. Wonderful music.
Wasn't it great?! My daughter and I flew from the US to Dublin specifically for this concert. Still can't believe I was there and had the opportunity to hear live the four amazing musicians who created my favorite album. I'd say it was a dream come true, but it hadn't even been a dream because I'd never thought it could happen. The next day we had stew for lunch at O'Donoghue's. What an incredible time. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to reminisce about it!
@@diannesherryromano4629 I flew with some friends from Boston and seen them in Corks Opera theatre on the same tour!! Absolutely worth every penny. Fantastic experience!!!
@@tonymurray814 Thank you for the response! I think they were headed to Cork right after the Dublin concert! A big storm was coming in, as I recall. I can't wait to get back over!
Magic, I thought it was a Celtic traditionnal song, as i Herad their third album. Some of their own compositions will be "Classics" of Irisch music someday.
just shows what a great album was cold blow and the rainy night by planxty. so many classic recordings on it and very few of the old planxty popular tunes.....here you have lakes of ponchartrain, cold blow and the rainy night, johnny cope, p stands for paddy i suppose, green fields of canada, little drummer boy, baneasa`s green glade and wonderful instrumentals... and great to have players like andy irvine, paul brady, donal lunney here, in top form.
Well, the mandolin and bouzouki are relatively recently "borrowed" instruments by Irish music - borrowed from Eastern and Southern Europe. Andy Irvine was one of those who drove this borrowing and he studied the original types of music they were designed to play.
Jungle Ninja Ah, i see you’re one of those we wuz kangz types. Most of these instruments come from Mesopotamia, the birthplace of civilization. Nice try rewriting history to fit your afro-centrist narrative, though
Great music and even better playing. Look, the instrument Andy is playing is a german waldzither or the so called german bouzuki. You can see that there are nine tuning screws on the machine head, but only eigth strings. So the c-string, it´s always a solo string ist missing. Niece to see this great musician playing a waldzither. cheers🤘
A fine companion to the studio version. I was impressed by this version. Things sound far more full-bodied, although I noticed he says 'We drank money free' when it should've been 'We spent money free'.
Andy and Arthur at their peak as both performers and song writers / arrangers, ably assisted by Donal Lunny. Astonishing beautiful, exotic music. Even today Andy has lost none of his technical ability and voice. A credit to his art.
@@johnnoonan4775 No: they're British… 😀 As for myself, first time I heard that song in the seventies made me jump from my seat and SCREAM! I used to listen to this every morning to jump-start me! 😀 …I guess I'm excitable… For many years I believed this song was trad. @joeygsmom Absolutely wonderful ! Great musicianship, good voice, and a haunting tune. I loved it ! Sorry I called you by the wrong name... again, on my last reply.
Absolutely, I love watching his fingers dyring these videos, it looks like he's bending and pulling off super thick strings with perfect control and ease here
Actually, in this clip he's playing a Waldzither. They look very similar to a Portuguese guitar, as far as having the same body and same tuners (not all waldzithers have these preston tuners, but many do). You can tell it's a waldzither because it has 9 strings. Four double courses, and a single string on top. I am trying to find a nice one to be restored, so I can tune it GDAEB, with the G on the single lowest string. Portuguese guitars have 12 strings.
SirSelby Thanks for that correction Sir, must admit I've never heard of a Waldzither (sounds German) but I used to own a 'guitarra' once. Didn't think of counting the tuners. As far as 'Not Totally Unfunny's' comment goes, having just read "The Humours of Planxty", I think the 'drank money free' may have been intentional, or a Freudian slip!
I would say that Andy Irvine is one of the most under-rated Human Beings of all time.

This video makes me realise what sh*t we are served on daily basis from the music industry today. Lunny, Irvine & Brady are such talented individuals.
