    Non-reader: "I hate reading"
Also non-reader: reads a lot of heated long-form heated arguments on social media, which amounts to a full novel in a week
For those who are not readers, If you can only read only one book in your life, I will recommend "The Book of Joy".

Nice list and the tips at the end are great.
To add to the conversation, highly recommend:
1 - Why We Sleep, Matthew Walker. Probably the most life changing book for someone who consistently did not get enough hours in. This book single handedly made me value sleep (for 8 hours) for the first time in my life and I could not be more thankful.
2 - Atomic Habits, James Clear
3 - Invested, Danielle Town and Phil Town
4 - Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman

I always enjoy videos of people sharing books that they’ve found inspiring. There’s two I’d like to add. The first is Getting Things Done by David Allen. It provides a framework for organising every your life and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. The Second is Atomic Habits by James Clear it’s about how small changes make a big difference and is, probably, similar to the Power of Habits, which I haven’t read.
I thought it was interesting that you said that you don’t particularly enjoy being in the office with the coffee break conversations but that How to win friends, etc is a life changing book. Isn’t one of the ways to win friends is by being part of the coffee break conversations?

Hey Christopher! 👋🏼 You're completely right. Although, I'm more for getting things done. I'm also very careful about who I surround myself with as the influence can work both ways...

In my opinion, the goal of being free to live however you please without being constricted to any obligations, is the wrong goal to aspire to, and achieving it will not result in increased happiness. I have a bunch of friends who have achieved this and many of them suffer from a sense of aimlessness.
Personally, I strive to have enough financial freedom to afford _some_ time to explore my options to find the obligation that is best aligned with the type of work I enjoy, but not to have so much financial freedom where I can afford to do absolutely nothing for months on end.
Humans don’t always know exactly what they want, and if they have 100% of their needs met without doing any work, there is a real risk that people will just do nothing, which leads to a feeling of emptiness.

    • @Myselfsama
      @Myselfsama 4 года назад +1

This is an interesting comment, but I'd argue that people who have the capacity to retire early on their own merit are not the type of people who would do nothing aimlessly for months on end. This is an actual legitimate problem for retirees however who after a full life of work are jettisoned to being at home never having fully mentally prepared on what the next stage of their life was going to be. So they get to bother their significant other on how best to stack the dish washer instead of doing something productive.

I agree, but it has to do with personality as well. Feeling like chatting with your colleagues is a waste of time is also typically a personality trait whereas other people thrive from it.

The overall statement about the house property can be very well true from a dry math perspective, but there are other factors to contemplate, for example your landlord might want to sell the house because they need to move on. That could be fine, but now consider you have a child and you lose your job. This is what I’m probably going through now.
Like you pay extra on some products because the commodity their provide, like ease of use, the peace of mind of owning could be worth the extra money.
Also, at the end of the day, all rich people are property owners, and not for practical reasons.

Thanks for sharing! While I always really enjoy to read and learn new things, I am often very disappointed by the things that I actually remember from a book. It seems that I learn much faster, and memorise better from a video on YT or SkillShare than a book. And I've tried from actual books, reading-apps or even audiobook... maybe I should try the Kindle. 😅

I tell you one thing: You shouldn't aim for being super effective, you should be effective enough... Because by being super effective you will inevitably cut all sorts of pleasantries and small ordinary moments from your life and end up like a robot (even if you have more assets thank to that you will probably have less happiness). Of course effective enough means different things for different people - but that's exactly the balance you should be looking for. One example: You mentioned talking to colleges during the coffee break - well, for some people, this is annoying and they just want to finish work early and go home, but other people enjoy it, they feel comfortable at work thanks to it and therefore, don't mind being there 9 - 17.
