The sword Gainsleaf sounds a lot like the Moramasa swords of Japanese legends, made by a 12th century Japanese sword smith named Moramasa Singi, who supposedly made a deal with the devil (I'm not sure if they actually mean the western Christian figure of Satan or some Japanese concept of a demonic spirit) to curse his swords to make them supernaturally more lethal. Do you know if the Norse story of Gainsleaf became significantly well known in Japan? Could Gainsleaf have inspired the legends of the Moramasa swords?
