Joe Coffee seemed to get a kick out of pointing out irony of these wiseguys deaths. Him pointing out Vario crew member Parnell "Stacks" Edward's death while eating fried chicken seemed to give him a chuckle... Edit: it wasn't Joe Coffee, but a random NYPD detective. Oops...
Let's get serious, Mikey Scars should thank his lucky stars that the order to try and beatdown Joe Coffey was called off because even with the baseball bat Coffey would have enjoyed beating Mikey Scars to a bloody pulp.
Coffey's description of the time that him and another detective were in a van listening in on one of the bugs that was planted where John Gotti was alone reading aloud the race results where he'd lost all sixteen races that he bet on and shouted that "God is a blankety blank f*g!" is comedy gold. The guy was a legend.
When you have someone as zealous as Coffey I don’t think it’s hard to imagine him using “extra legal” means to collar perpetrators. Especially given that era of the NYPD. He didn’t make much money, but was always at the super bowl and other important games?
What a great story! People like Joe Coffee, John Gotti and Mikey Scars are too interesting not to have existed or exist. These are people you can't make up. Great show Jeff. Keep up the good work.
I laud your well researched material. Excellent channel. That being said; The Coffey Files isn't entirely accurate. Coffey pretended like he was present for Vito's interviews more often than he was and didn't give Det. Pergola any credit for doing most of the interviewing himself. He wrote the statements down and handed them up to Coffey. He would even take credit from Kenny Mccabe. Coffey was a good guy and an excellent cop, but more for his PR and supervisory talent. This is stuff I learned while researching for a book I am writing. That being said, excellent video. I hit like and subscribed.
Nice job. I heard vague, negative rumors about him--probably just jealous guys. Makes me proud to be half Irish. PS-Any Coffey history taking down Westies?
