I have owned two 2005 pilots. I picked up the second pilot a week ago. It has 160k miles. Motor and trans appear to be fine. The other owner has receipts for timing and valve adjustments last month.
I do most of not all maintenance on my vehicles. This series is very helpful. I may try to tackle a trans once the old one dies. We will see.
But first power steering hose tomorrow and serpbelt and tensioner. Gotta get it up to snuff for my wife. Today there is a P0430 code (wish me luck lol)

Incorrect fluid is the most common cause of transmission issues with Hondas. Honda fluid only. Also, you need to check the fluid level with the engine off, not running. Overfilling the transmission is also a common cause of Honda transmission failure. Additional info here. www.ericthecarguy.com/solving-transmission-problems/

This was a tremendous time suck as it was. Given that I'll be using this as a 'winter' vehicle, I didn't feel the need to go that far. Part of the reason I've been doing more Honda 'restoration' work, is to practice for when I do my Type R. I won't be putting rusty bolts on that. I'm considering getting one of those vibration cleaners to handle that work. Thanks for the comment.

All hale the scrap yard seat belt!
Every single time I'm at the scrap yard for automotive parts and/or project steel, I harvest as many yards of seat belt material as I can.
Once home, I throw on the walking foot and upholstery thread for the old Singer sewing machine and make all kinds of loop ends for soft-tie dirt and street bike pickup truck bed tie-downs. I also fabricate loops for hanging extension cords, welding leads, air hoses, garden hoses, and anything else of similar length from garage and basement ceiling hooks.
Once your brain becomes conditioned to see seat belt strapping as a tool, the sky is the limit to its usefulness.

And keep the hale going for used tires!
Drill four holes in the sidewalls on each side for water drainage and use them as grocery caddies in the bed of a pickup truck -- keeps stuff from rolling around.
Cut up in to squares, non-steel belted tires make great soft-jaw material for the vise to hold uneven stock or nonsymmetrical parts.
Once again, start thinking of used tires as a resource and you'll be using the rubber everywhere!

Hi Eric, hopefully you can give me an insight on current issues on my 2006 Pilot EX fwd. I have current codes for all cylinder misfires, and P0740 TCC codes. Recently purchased this vehicle about 2 months ago at 150k. Still haven't hit 151k on it. Car ran fine when first purchased. As far as maintenance goes. I did a proper tune up, change the spark plugs (NGK), new coil packs (NGK), cleaned out EGR and replaced gasket as well. Cleaned throttle body,as well as intake manifold valleys, dis the relearned process for TB as well. Still have misfires in all cylinders. Clean out the two transmission linear solenoids along with the tubes with the little screens in them, replace the gaskets with OEM Honda ones. Also, relaxed the transmission oil (x2 so far) with OEM Honda transmission oil. I ended having the P0740 code after I treated the cruise control on the highway for about to miles. After I deactivated it and got home, I did a code check with my scanner and I have that fault code for the TCC. I'm stump Eric, this has put a halt on my out of state move unfortunately. Any help is most appreciated 👍

I just got done doing the heads on a 2007 Pilot, it had a blown head gasket, 221,000 miles. I purchased it from the original owner for cheap, not running. So far it's running good, but it looks like it never had the transmission fluid changed. I drained and refilled, keeping my fingers crossed. Magnetic plug was clean, fluid was black, but not gritty.

It's very uncommon for MLS gaskets to leak like that. The most common issue I see with Hondas is improper cooling system service. You have to bleed the coolant anytime you service the system otherwise the air pockets can cause issues. Also, only use Honda AFT. Thanks for the comment and good luck with the Pilot.

@@ericthecarguy Merry Christmas and happy holidays ETCG. There weren't any obvious signs of gasket failure upon disassembly. The machinist said the heads were in good shape, not cracked or badly warped. I tested both fans, and they are functioning properly. It was getting a lot of pressure into the cooling system , no mixing of coolant / oil. It did haver the wrong coolant (green). Inside / outside of radiator looks ok. The old stat opened slowly over a flame. I used Idemitsu type H ATF.

That ATF will work just fine. I believe they are the OE supplier. As for the overheat, air in the cooling system is the most common cause of that issue. www.ericthecarguy.com/what-to-do-when-your-engine-overheats/
