  • The Schock 35 Class Association was founded in 1985 as a voluntary corinthian association. Its purpose is to promote the continued enjoyment of Schock 35 Class sailing yachts in fair, corinthian, one-design yacht racing, and in cruising activity, and to promote friendship among their owners and crews.
The Schock 35 is a light displacement, performance sail boat. It is 35 feet in length at the deck level with a 12 foot beam. The boat has 827 feet of sail area, a masthead rig and displaces 10,000 lbs. with 4500 lbs. ballast. The interior has accommodations for six with a galley and enclosed head. The boat is speed rated the same as a J-35. The Schock 35 is manufactured by W.D. Schock Company, Corona, California, USA. A new boat race equipped costs roughly $130,000 US. Used boats range in price from USD $45,000 to $70,000.
The boat is raced with a crew of 9 or 10. Windward-leeward courses with leeward gates are preferred. To control the costs of competing, the Class Rules limit the number sails aboard and regulate sail purchases. Exotic fabrics and technology, Marine Industry Racers, Racing Specialists are also controlled by Schock 35 Class Rules.
Although raced in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan, the largest and most active Schock 35 fleets are along the Southern California coastline from San Diego to Santa Barbara. There are approximately fifty yachts in Southern California. The class enjoys six (6) high-point regattas a year with as many as twenty-nine (29) boats on the start line. The Schock 35 Class is the largest active one-design fleet over 30 feet LOA on the west coast of the United States. Because of the yacht’s popularity and availability in California, the Schock 35 was been selected for the Lipton Cup Challenge Regatta every year from 1991 through 2001.

Shad Turner designed the Santana 35. Steven Schock did the conversion to the Schock 35 in Bradenton, Florida, after demand for the NY36 started tapering off. The Santana 35 in not a light air boat. As college kids, we were given a few Santana 35s to bash around Long Beach and Newport. We spent a of of time talking about how to get that dog to hunt. A lot. Remember, the Santana 35 came out the same year those Farr one-tonners won everything (The Red Lion, Jenny H, etc.), rated higher but went slower. Something was wrong.
So... needed more sail area, needed longer waterline, needed a finer entry... those were the main points. Steve started with a Santana 35 hull, braced up so it could serve as a plug, then took a chainsaw to the bow. Laid in a new stem -- more plumb -- and faired from the stem to tangents on the hull. Real simple. Then worked on moving the rig aft and up. Apart from a few details, that was pretty much it.

I do own a Santana 23D for almost 26years. This is a fantastic boat which sailed almost 30k miles in the Southern Caribbean. I have 3 years thinking about a revamp for the cabin, since i do not race as much nowadays. Would be a premiun, to find some Santana 23D with updated interior, to confirm some of my ideas and maybe inspire different ones. This a very well performer even shorthanded cruising mode. A shame the WD Schock Closed down its business.

Fun video BUT the Schock 35 was always going to be faster than a Santana 35, the hull was revamped forward of the mast, increasing the waterline, displacement and adding a lot of lead, (santana 35 was 8,600lbs?) and raising the mast, plus going masthead from fractional. Pretty sure Tom Schock did the rework. The deck is the same. The subject boat has a revised bow pulpit too, decent design it looks for launching a spinnaker and dodging extra length at the harbormasters office. Very late boats had a revamped open cockpit, available as a refit. Full disclosure, I own a Shad Turner Santana 30 Mk1

    Great review of Buttercup.
Interesting story: DC offered us to sail this boat when we got t-boned a few years ago.
How we got hit on the port quarter, from a boat in the following sequence, seconds from the line/start... is another story.
He called us out of the blue a few days after we got hit and offered us to race his schock to keep our high points series going (CRA).
We ended up taking a break while Minx (Schock 35) was laid up at Driscoll getting repaired. Had we known it would take 6 weeks for the replacement toe rails to arrive from the east coast, we probably would have taken him up on his offer.
Anyways, thought it was a kind gesture in our small community to reach out like that. Props to DC!.
Minx is for sale right now if anyone is looking for a clean race machine. All offers welcome.
    Selfish plug there.
Enjoy the reviews, keep em coming.

In the 90’s these things pointed like tour guides going up hill. Our prevailing winds with flat waters in the PacNorwest set these up nicely.
I ran bow in a j36 and raced phrf against these, j35, and express 37’s

I was checking out old boats for sale in Cali earlier today and seen on sailboat listings website a 1911 schock 46. It's had alot of work done to it and is structurally sound. They only wanted 3800 for it and 85% of the wood and structure including the decks were replaced in the 80s. It's listed as a schock 1980s sailboat

In trying to find information on a 1975 santana 30. I have never seen a boat with ao many different models of the same length. Seems everone I look at is different from the last. It looks to be a good deal at 7500 with a new 14 HP Beta diesel. I would like a boat to take up the inside passage to Alaska. Wondering how well they behave in windy weather. It looks like it would be faster than most boats of the same length. Would appreciate any advice
