The things I stopped doing just this year (59) were 1) drinking alcohol. It just makes me sleepy and tired. 2) Going to buffets and/or ordering large menu items. 3) Waiting to buy necessities. If my car needs tires, I buy tires. If I need a dental crown, I get one. Delaying the purchase doesn't make the bill go away!

I agree with all of these. Three years ago, I also retired at 60. The most important thing you forget to mention is stop neglecting your health. Drink plenty of water, get your steps in, eat healthy 80% of the time (20% of the time indulge and eat ....), get your rest and keep moving. I say keep moving because most people hate the word 'exercise'. Keep moving by gardening, yoga, organize your house. Anything that'll keep your joints from freezing up.

59 years old. Worked as a carpenter, self employed for the last 30 years. Retired at 58, (though not through choice). Most in my profession stopped in their 30’s. Because of health and the economy,( I am Scottish), retiring was out of my hands. Decided to buy the camper van I had always wanted and go see the places I wanted to visit and live the life I had always put off for a future that may not arrive. No regrets. We have also both been adventuresome throughout the decades we have been together. We did move last year and so got rid of a lot of things we did not need or use anymore. I am retired but my wife has a few more years since she is a bit younger than me. I do wonder what our retired life will be like together, she is excited to retire and I am excited for her to retire. I imagine it to be like extended weekends. In many ways we have lived a bit of a retired life our whole lives in terms of travel and doing things. I think that rubbed off on to our children as well. Why wait until you retire, to do these five things? For anyone, start now, get rid of debt, long and short term, do new things, hang out now with good people, and financially, no one is really in control of their future. Since high-school graduation in the 1970's, I only worked for time off, and changed jobs and careers because I love to learn new things. I have a strong interest in mechanical equipment, so learned all the trades, and same with home renovation. I do all my own repairs and help others with theirs. I am now slowly learning a bit about horticulture, as we have five acres of prosperous property and are adding a few shrubs, fruit trees and doing a bit of gardening with tomatoes and strawberries. Life is good, so start now.

I retired 3 years ago this month at the age of 63 and wished I did it a long time ago. I developed my hobby of playing the banjo and got into Senior jam groups. I’ve been a partner dancer since I was 46 and still at it today. I got remarried 3 days after I retired to a woman I been with for 16 years. Money or healthcare cost is not my issue and it’s nice not to worry about the stressors from work. The down side is I ended up being a caregiver for my dad whom lives 1,100 miles from me so I rotate with my brother who lives 650 miles from my dad every 2 months. Good job and good advice. I got a chronic illness at 35 and have watched Mum & Dad and brother die and people I knew think life is about growing your wealth, accumulating material stuff and furthering their career and rental property portfolio lol. I'm 61 now and my spiritual journey in 2014 to 2017 taught me Love, gratitude and "letting go", in many sense of the word. Biggest I guess was letting go of societal standards and expectations and to still love and look after my material crap, but to know that it's really worthless to us. People think they need MILLIONS in super to retire and have a great retirement but you don't. Because you spend MANY years extra at work trying to achieve this and it's all relevant to the lifestyle you want, which is again "societies standards pushing "their" values on us all. I live my life now with Simplicity, Sincerity and Serenity and I love it. Some people actually pity me that I'm poor, but I'm rich just got minimal money and I'm happy, very happy. So I've "let go" of the life we are "supposed to have" and enjoy my final years so simply. We don't take a thing with us when we die and the most wonderful and beautiful things are free. Nice video and best wishes to you on your journey.

Planning ahead is so important. One of th biggest piece of advice my father gave to me was "you work for retirement". As the natural path in life is to pay for bills, n=mortgage, etc...instead of splurging on 'wants', focus on the 'needs'. And part of that is investing, not just throwing it in the bank. As many investment strategies can provide returns of around 20%, these days the best savings institution can barely yield 4.5%.
I don't like to say 'live like there's no tomorrow', because that seems like it's too negatively close. Although I do say that 'live like there's no time like the present'. Enjoy each moment, even if it's looking outside at a nice sunset. Take time to smell the roses. Take enjoyment in all of the little things we take for granted.
And if you are like me, and your 'bucket list' has all been crossed off, then make a new little list of small things that would be fun to do...let that be something else to live for.
As I'm enjoying mine...please enjoy your retirement!

One thing I found amazing in retirement, I didn't know how much I'd love it. Throughout my work life, and especially closer to the end, I dreaded walking away from work, I loved my job. But three days into my retirement, I decided to take another view at life, and I woke up the next day and haven't looked back. I love retirement. Especially since it gives me time to work on my various projects, uninterrupted by workdays and other work-related time constraints. My life is finally my own...YES!

The no 1 ( although some may see it as harsh) advice I could give any woman from 50 onwards is to continue to dye your hair, especially if it's long. Your husband or boyfriend or girlfriend may say " "Oh Yes dear your grey hair looks natural, good for you, you go girl" but inside most ( maybe not all) are cringing and are really embarrassed when out with friends. It may feel invigorating to not care what others think anymore and I get that, but those others might not want to spend as much time with you. Is that shallow from them? Absolutely. Is that human nature? Yes, it is!
Some people are attracted to short or tall or fat or thin people, others to curvy, some to blonde others to brunette. Having grey hair is NO different to this!!! So don't excommunicate people for simply having a preference as to what they like to look at. If you genuinely don't care what your partner or friends think of you, then fine, no problem. However if you do, you know what to do 👍
