Never had so much clarity on Sympathy vs Empathy! "In real empathy, the two people walk away healed and being more human and connected", so well said Josh!
It's a relief to understand empathy; to focus on being "together with", instead of needing to fix and "do something". Thank you, as this can be a more challenging EQ skill to practice, esp. in strained relationships.
“Don’t just do something - stand aside”. I strongly relate to that. The urge to offer advice or “help” is so strong especially as we hate to see people suffering. But really and truly, empathetic action is not about fixing but to create emotional connection with the other person. Empathy is focusing on the other person - their experiences, emotions, thinking and draw from these experiences to respond with authenticity and humility.
yes! many of us want to rush in and fix what's wrong when sometimes standing on the side of a friend while they work through their feelings is a much more empathetic response!
When you empathize and connect with the person standing with him or her, it's so much more satisfying of being together, while sympathy has no meaning for the person whom you are feeling for - it's just a one way feeling
Almost everyone seems to use the word 'empathy' to mean 'sympathy' lately. The meaning of the word may have really changed, or be changing, in English usage.
