Why We Don't Teach Readings (yet!) As mentioned in the introduction video to this series ( ruclips.net/video/RKWrWRFyfYo/видео.html ), it is my philosophy that it is a WASTE OF TIME to learn the readings for each kanji in isolation. I explain WHY in that video. To learn how to read kanji, I think it is best to learn WORDS that contain that kanji in the context of SENTENCES. We WILL be doing that in this series, after learning the meanings and writings for the 118 kanji in the JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 tests. So fear not! You WILL be learning how to read them in the near future. 😊
I thought the stories were a (fun) waste of time, until the quiz showed up lol. I'm very grateful for this series!! I'm so glad i found this, but THANK YOU for making it :)
Here's the readings, just in case anyone's curious! 五 is go, 六 is roku, 七 is nana, but is shichi when placed with non-number Kanji, 八 is hachi, and 九 is kyuu, but ku when placed with non-number Kanji. What I mean by non-number Kanji is, well, Kanji that's not numbers. One of the first Kanji you'll learn eventually is 時 (ji in most instances, I haven't seen a single exception yet, even when placed with other Kanji) the Kanji for time. Although, it is usually used in conjunction with 間, but can be used on it's own grammatically correctly. However, it can also, also be used on it's own with numbers, and it basically means "o' clock". It does NOT count as a number kanji, so seven will be shichi, and not nana, and nine will be ku and not kyuu. (that means seven o'clock is fun to say! shichiji, chichiji!)
Hi Andy. I found your channel just a couple of weeks ago. I was very confused about all these weird stories for each number. Until the quiz time came and they actually worked! I always forget how to write 5, 7 and 9. Now I have a great way to remember them! Great work. ありがとう
The biggest problem I see with all of these methods of memorization is that they're not tethered to anything that is personal to you, or that will instill emotion, nostalgia, or something personal. If you make these stories occur in a location you know well, your home, at buildings along the route to your work place, your friend's house, your college campus....they will be much more effective. I have been doing this for almost a decade now and this is the part I see people ignore.
This was a tough challenge to make all these kanjis into a sentence so I needed two but I think I did it. 感謝祭には五目飯と助六を作りたかった。そこでスーパーで魚と七面鳥と米と九穀パンを買い、八百屋で野菜を買った。Also happy early Thanksgiving 🦃🥧
I got the 1st 3 before I blanked on the high stepping horse legs. I'm glad to know my initial idea for pot lid was correct. I always considered "6" as "star". No reason why, but it stuck for me.
I think I know maybe 30-40 kanji pretty well. I know the meanings of the first 80. I hope this series helps the people who need it. I think itll be quite a few videos before I start to see stuff I don't know. I think It's important to practice writing them because when you sit down and try to write the ones you know you realize can't produce them from nothing.
The way I remember the kanji for five is that it kinda looks like the Arabic numeral 5. The kanji for seven looks like an upside down 7 with a line through it, as it is commonly seen in Europe.
I know all of these kanjis before but still I really loved it alot , if possible could u plz upload more videos bcz I wanna to know more stories and addicted to this kind of teaching ❤❤
do we need to learn the meaning of radicals too or just memorize them as parts? for example the meaning of fish hook 2 is second should i memorize that while memorizing the meaning of kanji?
im i supposed to put these in an anki deck? i dont think i can remember them without memmorising them as the stories don't really work for me, but maybe just watching these videos without anki helps getting me familiar with the kanji and not actually memmorise them yet... idk what do you think?
Bummed I missed this one live but I'm looking forward to watching today. Thanks again for all you do Andy and Yuki. Unrelated question, have you guys ever considered setting up your RUclips channel to mirror to Rumble? It's the big alternative to RUclips and I know a lot of folks like me would love to get away from RUclips more. They have a system for mirroring so it would require no effort on your part once it's set up.
The part where you mention an official radical is jarring to me often. I don’t know why but it seems like the importance is minimal and won’t help with memory, and the system for choosing it is arbitrary. Can someone please explain to me the official radicals purpose and why they are what he lists them as?
@@stein8840 what is a good thing about them? I realise I didn't say what was bad about them so allow me: they take up my sub inbox and notifications but make no content available. Then when the video gets released it is buried in other subs so I end up never getting to watch it. I assume there are significant algorithm benefits to them otherwise I dont know why anyone would use them. I never talked to a girl in my life btw
@@keptleroymg6877You realize you can set up to be notified when it goes live right? Premiers are the heads up to viewers that a live stream is coming so that you can bookmark it and catch it live. For the number five kanji's story i would say 2 worms playing the game of musical chairs, 1 worm on each side waiting for the music to stop
Amazing idea
wow

The 7 looks like an upside-down 7, and at school I always wrote the 7 with a dash through it.
omg thanks

Writing in the air is the real game changer

Loving the new kanji series!
Seven looks actually like 7 with a stroke in middle turned 180°
7 looks like one of those "fancy" 7s with a line through it but its upside down. Thats how i remembered it
I watch commercials for you buddy. thank you for the videos.
Got'em all right. But then again, while I'm not a master of kanji, probably not even close, I've definitely mastered the numbers already.
Can you mention the japanese words for the numbers more often? Instead of just once when you show it the first time
amazing kanji video. best ive seen
Doing gods work my man thank you 🙏🏼
Hey Andy, I would love if you had videos where you speak entirely in Japanese, maybe with both jp and en subtitles, that would be awesome :D
Check this out! 😉

I didn't think the story things would work for me, but yeah it did.
Yay. I got them all right!

I blanked on most the kanji lmao.
I recognize them immediately when I see them, but remembering how to do it will take me time.

5 looks more like the worms trying to make a chair/4 between them

8 is so easy to memorize because it looks like number 8 in Arabic which is ٨😆
Old 5 looks like the HunterXHunter cards
