- Today we’re travelling to the land of the rising sun, but we’re not going to talk about Japanese. There exists another language that has been spoken here for thousands of years. Ainu has only around 2 remaining native speakers (officially). Even though small, the language possesses a great importance to the linguistics. Ainu is absolutely unique as it not connected to any other language. By researching it we could discover pages of human evolution history that are for now unknown to us.

For those are interested in anime: there's a manga/anime called "Golden Kamuy", which has a heavy focus on Ainu culture, very recommended

It's always sad when a language dies. Ainu isn't the only endangered language in Japan. There are others, like Miyakoan, particularly the Ogami dialect, which is kinda unique in that it surprisingly _loves_ consonant clusters (kf = make, fks = mouth, psks = pull).
Japanese is beautiful language, but other languages in Japan are too. It'd be nice if we can save them

Languages in Japan are primatily divided into two language families: Japonic and Ainu.
As seen from its name, Japanese belongs to the Japonic family, alongside other languages like Okinawan (very similar to Japanese) and Miyakoan (quite different to Japanese). They are actually divided into more branches here but Wikipedia can explain it better than I do: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Japan?wprov=sfla1
On the Ainu family, there's only one living language left that is spoken in Hokkaido.

Language is a tool. If it is no longer useful to a people, then it is set aside. You can't force people to adopt another language if it isn't useful to speak it (such as how Ireland has been trying to get everyone to speak Irish...but it's not really taken hold). The Ainu language is now little more than a novelty or just a second language used for ceremonial purposes. It's lost its usefulness as a living first language. This is partially due to the necessity of speaking Japanese to really get along in Japan and partially because the Japanese pushed so hard to assimilate the Ainu that the number of native speakers simply fell below a critical point.
With that said, even though the language dying is pretty inevitable, cataloguing it for academic reasons is important. Especially due to it's apparent ancient roots and uniqueness.
My best friend in college is Ainu. His uncle developed the Ainu language for Drops, the only online tool that teaches the Ainu language. He is a native speaker of Ainu. So . . . is he one out of two people? No, definitely not.

I think the "2" is just referring the official number - census wise. Even though it's known that are more that hide it. There's articles talking about descrimination and like any other minorities, they try to survive their own way.

Japanese census data is shaky to trust at best, and the most recent census reports about 5 fluent speakers - but this is self-reported and there is no definition for "fluent" Ainu speaker provided by the Japanese government
I am from Hokkaido (originally), and have always been interested in their language and culture, but I don't really know much about them unfortunately. But one thing I know is that many younger Ainu people are now learning their ancestors' language as their second language to preserve it. Although it's inevitable to lose all the native speakers, it will not likely to extinct in the near future. There's still hope.
Luckily, a lot of people are putting in effort for almost extinct/extinct languages, and I'm glad to hear that that goes for Ainu as well! I'm from the US and at a nearby college they started offering classes in a Native American language which had gone extinct. Even though there are no more native speakers of the language, the language itself is no longer extinct as there are now people who can speak it again. It's truly a great thing to see!

@Michael Chan : Well, I wouldn't generalise it that way because Langfocus also talked about less known languages such as Zulu but as a general assumption that is what we can expect from these two channels. None of them is superior to the other, it is best to watch both as they cover different languages or compliment each other with factual information.
This channel focuses on the history of the language (something you can copypaste on Wikipedia) while LangFocus is all about the linguistic aspect of it (via native language speakers and some copy and paste from history)
I live in Japan and have worked for my entire career as a Japanese translator/linguist, and one of my close friends is an Ainu shamaness. She knows the Ainu language in the context of songs and prayers, she plays traditional Ainu musical instruments, and knows how to sew and embroider traditional Ainu clothing. She has explained to me in great detail how much influence the Ainu language had on the language we call Japanese. "Kamui," the Ainu word for God or sacred spirit, is the progenitor of the equivalent Japanese word "Kami." Anyone who wants to study the Ainu language needs to meet with Ainu people and talk to them about their culture, there are many people left who know this language in bits and pieces even if they don't answer surveys claiming to be native speakers. As you say, there is Japanese influence on Ainu, but there is also huge unspoken influence of Ainu on modern Japanese.
"Official estimates place the total Ainu population of Japan at 25,000. Unofficial estimates place the total population at 200,000 or higher, as the near-total assimilation of the Ainu into Japanese society has resulted in many individuals of Ainu descent having no knowledge of their ancestry" - taken from English Wikipedia on Ainu.
So, how many speakers of Ainu are there really, considering that not even all people who are officially recognized as Ainu speak Ainu language? Around 20 000? Surely they exert "huge unspoken influence" on the remaining 125 000 000 Japanese people. To actually do that these Ainu would all have to be Japan's officials, teachers and celebrities, but that is of course far from truth.

*Ainu* people are a mixture of *Jomon* and *Okhotsk* people. They have traditionally lived in Hokkaido, Karafuto/Sakhalin, and Chishima/Kuril islands. However, we know that various *Ainu* dialects--even on Hokkaido alone--were not always mutually intelligible.
All modern Japanese carry Jomon DNA to varying degrees. *Ainu* people have the highest (about 70%) Haplogroup D admixture. The second highest are the residents of Southern Kyushu, Amami, and Okinawa. Jomon people came to Japan sometime during the last ice age, over 12,000 years ago when Hokkaido and Karafuto was still connected to the continent.
However *Ainu* also carry unique genes which derive from Okhotsk people that cannot be found in other parts of Japan. Genetic studies of Okhotsk bones indicate similarities with groups such as *Nivkh* in Karafuto/Sakhalin, *Ulch* in Amur river delta, as well as *Itelmens/Kamchadal* and *Koryak* of Kamchatka peninsula. Archaeological findings of Okhotsk people on the northern shores of Hokkaido are dated between 3rd and 13th century AD. The Okhotsk tribes were known to seasonally migrate, depending on the conditions of drifting ice.

Ainu language is priceless and Ainu people are precious. Likewise for so many rare indigenous cultures and nations, we must all contribute to see that what remains is preserved and what is being lost is restored. Homogenization, no matter the context 9or characteristics of "default" dominant cultures), is an affront to human history, heritage, lore, and diversity.

Innumerable languages and cultures have come and gone since the dawn of mankind, long before recorded history began. It's just a part of life, nothing lasts forever save death and taxes.
Yes, the homogenization of so many cultures is really sad. I live in a part of the Netherlands with it's own languages ("dialects", though I would argue not) and culture, and we weren't even allowed to speak our dialect at school, my parents also mostly switched to "ABN" (which translates to "common civilized dutch", now called "standard language") once I got into school.
Now I'm trying to learn more of my language, but sadly I only have one grandparent left and she's 89, so it's getting more difficult to learn the oldest useable form I can, luckily there are many speakers and there are more and more efforts to protect it.
Many German dialects have also gotten diluted by hochdeutsch or whatever, while there were many regional languages (with a gradient of differences) before. We used to be able to speak our dialect in the German Aachen, because the dialects are similar (father's experience, not mine) but that's getting harder and harder.
Assimilation (in Europe) often makes the differences over borders starker.
I personally like the ideas of many Solarpunk channels here on youtube, not only because of the environmental views and non-capitalist strive, but also because it encourages local community and cultural heritage, without letting go of our global knowledge. Just wanted to throw that in here.
PS. I forgot to mention why they are interesting languages, and especially for linguists:
They are very tonal, like Chinese and cantonese, as it has many "melodic" elements that matter, far more vowel sounds than Dutch and a greater range of consonant sounds that are used (hard and soft g, rolling and soft r, sj, shh, tssh, different j's, d hard and soft (think korean), etc.), though the consonant sound differences mostly don't matter for meaning or word (except s and j can matter).
One part of the melodic things is called "stoottoon en sleeptoon" basically like a musical accented note or a legato into another note would be the best analogy, in my opinion.
(I also later found acutus and circumflex for this, though it sounds different to my ears than in latin languages.)
Interestingly, although this is very far away from there, in my country (Peru), among the Machiguenga people (Matsiguenga), the word "kamui" has got a similar meaning as god or spirit of nature (such as in Pachakamui). There's also "kamaite" (such as in Pachakamaite) among the Ashaninkas, and "kamaq" in Quechua, which means "nourisher", and it's usually part of the name of the most important gods (such as in Pachakamaq). It could be a coincidence as well, and in this case it's also not known which languange influenced the other.
Interestingly, something similar to Jomon pottery has been found in Ecuador.
I'm not sure if it happened to be similar, but it's a lot of fun to consider!

It's not unlikely as many ancient tribes visited settled in new countries by travelling by boat and being how peru is just across the pacific, it's not impossible. Also God is a favourable word and is one that is used very regularly so I wouldn't be surprised that it hasn't changed or is related.

No gender, no cases, no tenses doesn't make a language easier. As a native Spanish speaker Spanish gives more information because of gender, complex conjugations and tenses. We don't need to rely on context much because the language already gives us all the information we need. But when we face a language that lacks all that we have to learn to read context and it is not always that easy, especially when you read things like song lyrics. Who is doing? When did it happen? Those are challenges we face.
I guess we each become more accustomed to and rely more on our native language rules when communicating 🤔 it's a bit tricky to break that mold to learn other languages.
I understand what you mean. Not having articles and plurals in Japanese is less complicated, but it's more difficult for people who are used to articles to understand. Omitting the subject, something Spanish and Japanese have in common, is also less complicated, but difficult for people who aren't used to it.
Yes, this is true. A language being simpler actually doesn’t necessarily mean it’s simpler to learn. I learned Malay, having a background of bilingualism in Tagalog and English, and I found it quite hard at first understanding how words seemed to just go together with little indication of their relation in the sentence. It took me some time to better understand such grammar. Also, it can be quite ambiguous to understand having such simple grammar. I think that a language having complex grammar does not necessarily make it harder to learn. English has ‘simple’ grammar but it has so many irregularities that it is quite tricky, and all those irregularities are like mini rules in themselves. Japanese, from what I know, has rather complex grammar but it has very few irregularities in its grammar. Although, what I find difficult with Japanese is its very different way of expression (e.g. very frequently the subject is dropped with no verbal affix like in Indo-European languages to indicate even the person and number of the subject of a verb) and maybe also the pitch accent.

I am studying linguistics especially Japanese and English at my university but I am just a junior and still don't know that much about languages in terms of linguistics, even Japanese. There are thousands of things to learn in this field and I am looking forward to knowing a lot of things that surprise and excite me. When I think about languages in this world, of course, it is interesting and enjoyable, but it makes me feel sad when a language dies and there are endangered languages that have only a few native speakers of some dialects It is not only about Ainu but also all of the dialects in this world.

There's always hope. My very recent ancestors are Irish, and the Irish language was thought to be extinct, thanks to the English trying for 800 years or so to eradicate it. But once Ireland (minus the six counties, which may come back into Ireland fairly soon!) won its independence, the government set out to bring it back. And now there are many Irish speakers in Ireland.
In the British Isles the most threatened languages are probably Manx (Isle of Wight) and Cornish (of Cornwall), which are Celtic languages related to Irish and Scots Gaelic and Welsh. So let us hope that they can be preserved and more users will exist in the future. And let us hope the same for Ainu.

From childhood i loved to read about rare, mysterious, ancient languages and peoples like the Ainu, but there was little infornation other than a few encyclopedia articles, so in school i had to content myself with what was available, studying mostly Spanish and German, being interested in the roots of English seen in German words and in Latin's descendant words in Spanish. Many years later videos like this are available at the touch of a finger!

So I'm planning to go back there in a few days to live with an Ainu family ! Thank you for bringing the Ainu language in the open. My first introduction to Ainu ban was 2 years ago when I visited Sapporo for the first time. I was so lost when it was spoken to me. Hokkaido has a rich history that is slowly going away despite efforts to keep it alive.
Watching this makes me want to binge-watch 'Golden Kamuy. It's a really good anime that also highlights Ainu's way of living.

At time 7:32 it is mentioned that the Ainu word "cikir" for leg -- it's interesting since in Javanese (from Java island, Indonesia) language the word "ceker" means leg (usually for poultry or birds).

My Japanese hometown has a Jomon Museum so I have always been interested in Ainu language. Adding it to my list.

Sad that most of my otaku/weeb friends, some of who've been consuming Japanese media nearly their whole lives, had never heard of the Ainu until I mentioned them.
I rarely see anime that has culture as an integral story part so it's understandable (and sad) that they're missing out on a lot of stuff. Anime alone don't represent Japan.

I had no idea that the Ainu people still exist in cultural communities. Having studied the Japanese subjugation if the Ryukyu, and understanding it’s desire to eliminate all cultures not Japanese, it comes as no surprise that the Japanese historical accounts did not include any information on the Ainu. I am thrilled to learn of the Ainu persevering to this day. I will search online for any language courses.

The argument of the ties between those two groups of people are more cultural than linguistic, but those two Fields can never really be completely mutually exclusive.
From what I remember, the evidence he cites consists of the groups' religious symbols, DNA connections, and even some speculative language connections put forth by a few Scholars who don't mind taking the Heat for diverging from mainstream opinions. They could be completely wrong, but I the viewers here might enjoy hearing the argument put forth over there.

I found this study of the Ainu culture and history (what little is known) to be fascinating, especially considering that I was able to hear Ainu speakers. I was taught a Japanese martial art (originally from China), called Shorinji Kempo. It is derived from a Chinese style called Shurin-ken, derived from Shaolin style. My Sensei was, I believe, Ainu. I am in Canada, where I met him. He guided me through to first-degree black belt. Shorinji Kempo is a religion in Japan. He was tall and very pale. Thank you for all the insights you provided. When I hear about languages dying, I feel the urge to learn them. Problem is, I'm already struggling with normal Japanese, I don't think I'm resourceful enough to gather the material I would need to learn a language only spoken by two people on the planet.

It's funny how some governments wanted to kill/assimilate minorities but now they want to preserve them. The same happened to the Basque in Spain, the Saami in Finland or native Americans in the USA. Luckily the world has become a better place and there's less discrimination of these peoples.

I was fascinated by the similarities between Ainu homes, tools, garments etc., and early Native American ones, when I visited the Ainu themed village at Lake Akan in Kushiro. It was easy to imagine Asian people had come to North America tens of thousands of years ago across the Bering Strait. I don’t know many details of that, but having grown up in the western US I’m somewhat familiar with artifacts from earlier periods when the Goshute, Paiute, Ute, Diné and others thrived in this area. And I do know that there is a DNA connection between Native Americans and Asians. Thanks for your very interesting videos.

I always noticed a striking similarity between Ainu decorative patterns, and those of the native peoples of the Pacific Northwest. I wouldn't be surprised if there was prehistoric coast-hugging movement of traders and hunting/fishing expeditions all along the northern Pacific Rim, from Hokkaido to Vancouver. And possibly beyond, in either direction. Ainu having direct contact with Haida, Salishans, or Tlingit is unlikely. But I could see traditional handicrafts potentially traversing that entire distance.
My daughter is half Ainu half Amazigh, she carries quite the legacy on her little shoulders.

I have studied Karate for over 50 years. For a time I took a great interest in Japanese culture. In my reading I ran across a very interesting article written I think some 30 years ago. It was done by a group of archeologists who were studying Ainu. What they discovered was that in the beginning of the 2nd millennium, Japanese Daimyos recruited Ainu to fight in their behalf since they were well known for there fighting abilities. They were the early Samurai, and became genetically mixed with the Japanese they served. The result was that many Japanese have traces of Ainu. This was so distasteful to the Japanese archeologists in the study that they refused to have their names on the publication.
When you say distasteful you mean racist, Japan is so fucked up as a country, hating on everything non Japanese, so closed minded.
Fun fact about karate: It's from Okinawa specifically, not mainland Japan.
The Okinawans pronounced it "ka-ra-tee." NOT "ka-ra-teh." That's the Japanese way, which many people will pompously say to correct you.
This is because in the Okinawan language, "hand" (te) is pronounced "tee" (ti). So it still means "empty handed" as far as I know.

They are very exclusionary to people not of ‘pure’ origins. They look at Ainu much like other nations view their First Nations peoples. Japanese who have mixed blood from centuries back are still considers ‘Lesser’. They definitely don’t want immigration. That is a problem now because of labour shortages. That is one of the incentives to develop advanced androids. That being said, I don’t know about the newer generations. They may well take a more enlightened view. My long time interest and study has been women’s mythologies in various cultures, and how the transition into patriarchy has influence the rights and attitudes towards contemporary women. I have heard from Japanese people I know that this area is changing in the younger generation, thankfully, but things like racial origins are as hard to change as old attitudes towards women’s rights. I have been learning Ainu for almost 1 year by now, first I started by Drops app, but found some online courses which are help me to learning more grammatic. I'm part ainu and I'm happy people are taking more of an interest in ainu culture. What was said about most modern Japanese was incorrect though, unless I misheard you. Most modern Japanese come from a mix of Jomon and Yayoi, not just Yayoi. Jomon dominated areas were pushed up north, that part is true, but there was also a lot of mixing involved and Japanese today are mixed.

No, the Ainu are not the Jomon, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, as their DNA clearly shows.
In Japan, the Ainu and Okinawan have the same amount of Jomon DNA, and the other Japanese carry Jomon DNA too but with a little more DNA mixture from other Asian regions. Okinawa and Japanese have the same Language structure but Ainu does not. So that means that in Japan almost everybody has a Jomon ancestry, but probably Ainu was a mixture of Jomon and Okhotsk with the language borrowed from Okhotsk. Speaking of Japanese, the structure is close to Sumerian and is completely different from other languages spoken in East and Southeast Asia except for Korean being close in structure.

I taught English in Obihiro, Hokkaido from ‘90-‘92 and recall going to a nearby Ainu village displaying totem poles, which of course reminded me of Alaskan Eskimos.

I find amazing similarities between Ainu and Maori:
- both are form a big archipelago with similar climates and sizes
- both have a culture where women have tatoos on the mouth
- both only have /r/ and no /l/, only five vowels, only voiceless plosives /p, t, k/ and few fricatives, of which /h/ exists in both.
- both have a deep connection to nature
- Ainus used to hunt bears and Maoris used to hunt the giant moa.

@@janaw.4552 It is thought that Old Japanese had significant contact with Proto-Polynesian when Old Japanese maybe wasn't in Japan or only existed in southern Japan, enough that they have some sprachbund-like features. Unfortunately we don't know under what context this interaction took place.

As a Basque I had heard about linguistic connections between Basque and Ainu languages. Its shocking as geographically they are worlds apart. Anyway I am going to find out about other languages that have been related to Basque. I mean , apart from Caucasian and Bereber languages. I didn't even know the Anui existed. It's extremely unlikely that a language isolate as Basque should be in any way connected by another isolated language half way around the world. The Basque probably went far by sea, but not that far eastwards.. there's just no presumable way there could be any connection between those languages, except if you go back to when Out of Africa happened, if even that.

I found this very interesting. You probably know that more than half of the native languages of America have been altogether lost and many are still in danger of extinction. Some, such as Mohican, are seeing a resurgence in the number of speakers.

she might but this one is certainly not in priority. It doesn't go extinct and is surrounded by pretty similar languages. Kazakh is just a sample of many Turkic, Altain and Kypshak languages out there, as well as it isn't famous that much to gain views. Otherwise, видео болса да, рахат болады, бiрак кажетi жок казiр.

Getting as much of the language recorded as it is possible to do is paramount, I should think. Luckily we have the ability to do that today so that it won't vanish without a trace. And of course, videos like this one don't hurt. This language seems like a really important link to our prehistoric past.
It's just a modernization story.

It's a real shame you didnt mention about Bronislaw Pilsudski, the older brother of Polish Marshall Jozef Pilsudski. Bronislaw was an exile (there was still no Poland on the map, under partition fighting for its regain of independence) and he did a great contribution of discoveries of Ainu people, their culture, language, you name it. The photo in this video at 1:43 was taken by him. :)
I will allow myself quote a piece of an article, which better portrays some of what he did: "The local peoples, however, were illiterate, so Piłsudski undertook to study their spoken languages with great dedication. Together with the writer Wacław Sieroszewski, also an exile, he made unique recordings of Ainu speech and chants on wax cylinders. Several decades later, the Japanese company Sony would manage to restore these recordings. As a result of his research, during which he wrote down and translated several thousand words in Ainu, Gilack, Orocki and Manga, several dictionaries were produced. His work also contains exhaustive descriptions of the customs of these peoples and their religions, as well as local legends, stories, fairy tales, and songs. Bronisław also took several hundred photographs of the communities he studied. He also founded several schools, and wanted to codify local regulations and the development of rules of administration. It is also worth noting that in addition to his research, Piłsudski repeatedly petitioned for an improvement in the fate of the Ainu through official channels."
Another astonishing fact is his buddy, Waclaw Sieroszewki did similar studies in Sakha (Yakutia), ultimately helping Sakha people with recogonition and forming identity. :)
