I bought a 2003 Navigator with 50,000 miles in 2011 and I bought a $3000 Ford 3 year 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty with a $50 deductible. About 10,000 miles later the entire suspension and compressor had to be replaced. I paid $50 for a $2400 dealer cost replacement of the entire suspension system. NO LIE, I had another $12500.00 in Warranty work done in the next two years. My engine failed and my Transmission failed, along with a few other expensive items. It cost me out of pocket another $200 in warranty deductibles. On 10/2014 my warranty expired, I no problems until 2018 when the air suspension failed again. My local mechanic said it will run $2400 to fix the air suspension or $1100 to replace it with Strut Master Struts and Springs. I chose to replace it with the Strut Master Struts and Springs. The air suspension ride is better, but the new springs and struts are very close. When driving up parking lot ramps, and going over speed bumps, my Navigator rocks back and forth more now than when I had the Air Suspension. When on roads and Freeways there is almost no difference. After the suspension replacement, most of my front end steering components were wore out. I had the whole front end repaired, $1000. I just had the Air Con fixed $1200. It is 2021 and I only have 40,000 mile on my newer Engine and Transmission and 10,000 miles on the suspension and front end. In theory I should have a sound mechanical 2003 Navigator. I'm I going to sell it, NOWAY, its only worth about $1500. It's a Great Tool, I haul around my family and friends and a whole lot of Cargo over the years. If you buy a used vehicle, by a Manufacturers Extended Warranty only , never buy a after market Auto Warranty. It's fine to replace your air suspension with Struts and Springs, less headaches and worry.
Hello. Could you give us the name of the shock absorbers you have fitted to your Lincoln? Does the car drive better now? Maybe you have some recent photos. greetings !
I would not have attempted the swap without this video. Thank you. It was easy and quick along with not having to worry about the air system going out on our trips.
You do not need to mess with the center nut on the top of the strut to rotate it, that is what keeps the coil spring from exploding off and hurting or killing you. DO NOT MESS WITH THE CENTER NUT, unless you have the coil springs locked in place and have experience doing it or someone with experience helping you. PLEASE STAY SAFE.
This video saved my life. My fuses went out and the back of my truck sits high. But this video helped me replace it to normal suspension. Thanks so Much
The previous owner of my 2012 Lincoln Navigator L was sick of the issues and failures of the air suspension system and chose to perform the conversion to coil springs and eliminate the air ride system and compressor. I have driven two identical vehicles, one with the air-ride system and mine with the coil spring conversion and I see no performance or ride difference. The only issue remaining, is that the computer dash display still displays "Check Air Suspension System" every time the vehicle is started and the computer performs the vehicle's health check. It's just a small annoyance to press the dash "Reset Button" to clear the message each time the vehicle is started, but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. Do you know how to prevent the "message' from displaying after the conversion has been performed. I suspect the message may be triggered by the electro-mechanical ride sensor switches that are normally attached to the air springs. I haven't yet checked to see if the sensors are still on the vehicle or what position they are in.
You need forscan to read the IC module. You have to edit the numbers to disable the air suspension message from appearing. Google search "air suspension delete forscan" and you will see what I mean
Hi, my 2005 Navigator rear suspension is sagged too now, and contemplating of replacing it with coil. How was the ride and if you manage to erase the icon on the dash?
......Still haven't had any luck erasing the icon on the Dash, although I switched off the suspension on the left rear corner at the small compartment.
Thanks for sharing! I have had the air suspension go out years ago, but lucky it was still under warranty. The price to fix the air suspension is the same as a used car. I know it will not ride as smooth as air. Lots of great information and tips in your video.
The suspension is more from the wire harness that goes to the transmission. I just got my new harness in. I reinforced mine with 200 degrees and wrapped it from the factory. I will save you tons of problems later if you do re-wrap the wires now.
Truly it’s the best thing one can do on this Navigators, just because their air suspension has too many issues and it’s very delicate and expensive . Let us know how your conversion goes. 😃
Your explanation is awesome; this is interesting. I'm going to get me a navigator 2003 this weekend ans I'm checking reviews came your video just in case I need to do it on my own. I can do a few things in my own like check oil, put oil, change my tires that are 22's. So I'm a hands on young lady. Your instructions are so clear after a few watch I can definitely do this. Great job Sir and keep safe.
After the suspension kit change i love the drive omg.. but i got misfire cylinder 3.. evrything was fine before. Could that be because of the compressor and air hoses hanging down ? Making a a vacuum leakage ? And then misfire ?
I am glad you made this video. I want all people who own a Lincoln all are not the same. I have a 2006 Gator Limited and it is not short like this one. I have. had more problems knowing mine is so different. The 06 is the last Gator to have an on and off switch for the suspension. Keep this in mind. I am happy about the rear 30mm bolt and not needing a wrench. I was about to go crazy over finding one where I live, they have tractors but nothing over 22mm lol what!!
How about check engine light for suspension. There’s by pass kit out there from strutamaster for $450. Crazy price anyways is the navigator limited in speed due to the suspension light active after the conversion is done ? Can owners still drive the suv without overpaying strut master for their bypass box?
I did this to my 04 navigator about 3 years ago. Had air suspension worked fine. Lowered it using a 2 inch drop kit that is nade for 03-06 expedition. Changed it after 6 months since it would bottom out with 7 passengers. Switched over to arnott suspension plus a 3 inch spacer lift made for the expedition.. it rode good for about 3 months until the ride height took out my upper control arms. Then I sold my navigator and got a 2012 fusion
Awesome video, THANK YOU for sharing wrench and socket sizes. Only thing is you forgot to show us when to tighten the middle nut on the shock. I'll figure that part out though. Thanks for taking the time to do this
This is great, but I’m having issues with notifications on my dash that my air suspension is turned off and tire system faulty. Any ideas on how to clear those?
Press the switch in the back to the off position and that will turn off the suspension, but then you will have a “suspension off” warning on the dashboard... it will always stay there, every time you turn on the car you will have to press the button on the dashboard to make the message go away.....
Great video. I wish I knew you can change the air suspension to coil springs before I traded in my '07 Navigator. My step son told me AFTER I traded it in😥 PS- Is the ride smooth after the conversion? You should have shown a video or picture of your truck after you were done😀
you don't need to, and shouldn't mess around with that center bolt . . . you can use a 3/8ths extension for a socket to tweak the alignment of that shaft without lossening up the bolt . . .
What is the difference between these shocks and something like the MOOG ST8566 & ST8567... they look the same? Is the conversion kit designed differently or have different upper mounts. Thanks in advance.
What if I wanna replace the front shocks only so that my Navi will be running on front coil springs and rear air shocks? Will it work? Will the computer malfunction? Will the air compressor work properly?
if you only wanted to change the rear suspension would that like be okay or would i have to do front and back ? cause the front is fine on my 2000 lincoln its just the rear thats down
Press the button located in the back, when you open the rear door it will be on your left panel, that’s switch is used to turn air suspension “off”. After you do that you will always have an announcement saying “Air suspension off” in which you can make it go away by pressing any button on the dash
After I take that 30 mm bolt out , it never lowered so the coil could go in , it was a struggle to get the air shock out , all the screws are out an everything man.
I'm doing my this weekend , because my air suspension deployed, due to winter time, when is too cold out there they won't rise up.... It's been a pain Avery winter, during summer was perfect....
Nice video. I changed my air to springs on my 2003 Lincoln Navigator years ago. In which I had some trouble since then. Maybe you have a solution. I had to change my springs twice tear and wear from a heavy engine too. My troubles: 1 suspension switch off every day in my dash. Hitting reset every day to cancel display. 2. Parking assist works on and off since I went to springs. In your video you did not connect the electrical back to the suspension air solenoid control valve. In mine It gave me a trouble code. So I connected and zip tied to chassis that fixed my trouble code. Comments: I think my parking reverse assist works with also the air ride high sensor (elevation sensor)not sure yet? Which is connected to the upper control arm. Gonna test that soon. Any comments or fixes please comment. Thanks.
The display will always show “air suspension off” and like you mention you have to hit reset every time and that solves it. The parking sensors are independent from the suspension I’m It sure why they are giving you issues, I think you have a independent issue there. Also what do you mean by connecting back the electrical? Cables where connected to air shocks once removed there’s no where to connect anymore just zip tie them to chasis
In my 2003 It gave me a code then. Found that the air solenoid need it to be hook up to the electrical pig tails. Which is the connector to the unit next to the air line. This kind of white unit called air solenoid which is removable. It was my trouble air suspension code at switch rear ON. After reconnecting and zip tied to chassis fixed the error code in my dash, but kept the air pump running. If off I think the solenoid think doesn't matter haven't try. Idea not yet tested!! I think if the power itself to the air pump removed with the rear switch ON and solenoids connected. It might keep the system on and prevent displaying in dash the message [suspension switch off] and air pump from working. I haven't try that yet. From the fuse box nothing work for disabling the message. I left my solenoids zip tied and been with message since then.
@@CHUY90247 I went and got another module. In which the same thing happens.. I believe is already pre-programmed module setting in height and perimeter. I just left it that way for now. My air suspension in the past had the same issue then and now with the springs.
Lucky I brought my navigator with coil shocks already installed but when I'm ready to change em I'll return here cause this was a great video... also is there a way I can shut the suspension warning sign off when I cut the truck on?
Na bruh Im sorry, I don’t think there’s a way to remove the message. Al you can do is turn off the air suspension but you will have the “suspension off” warning
I didn’t get any errors because I turned the switch on the suspension off. It’s located in the trunk like I show on the video, the only message I was getting was “suspension off”
@EsperanzaBalderas not only that but new $1000 air suspension won’t last long and sooner than later that’s another $1000. Everybody complains about the air suspension, they are just too delicate
@@GarageBoys there's nothing delicate about the system. Just buy Goodyear airbags instead if factory ones and the problem is solved. But your video misleads people into thinking that the best option is the swap. Once you consider depreciation and loss of ride quality you've more than surpassed the extra cost.
I’m not misleading people I’m showing them what I did so they can consider it as an option. This is a public channel, here they can see everyone’s likes, comments and views on the subject.

Unfortunately the notification will always be there, you can turn off air suspension but you will have the “suspension off” message
How can we remove fault messages from dash screen? Not even say turned off or something, i converted to springs i dont have selenoids or pump any more

Hey buddy thanks for the video, I need to replace front shocks only, can I do that? or I have to replace all of them, (front and back) thanks
I’m not sure, I think the air hoses are all connected so if you unplug 2 the other 2 will leak
Awesome video. Thanks!

😅 that is not a right triangle lol
f@ck i touched the red button😭
Bad idea, why screw up a good suspension?
Too expensive to repair and maintain
@@GarageBoys Not really
Repair a bad susp 1000 dls
Replace for coil spring 400 dls
@EsperanzaBalderas not only that but new $1000 air suspension won’t last long and sooner than later that’s another $1000. Everybody complains about the air suspension, they are just too delicate
Thanks for this Video man. help me out a lot with my Navigator. #SubscribeThose
Glad I was able to help you!
Awesome, thanks
glad I could help! if you can like and subscribe!
Чё говорит? По татарски не понимаю!
If you're too cheap to maintain your Gator then buy an Expedition. NO VEHICLE THAT WAS EVER CONVERTED TO SPRINGS is going to ride better.
I don’t think is just the financial issue, it’s more the annoyance of constant issues and repairs required by such a delicate system.
@@GarageBoys there's nothing delicate about the system. Just buy Goodyear airbags instead if factory ones and the problem is solved. But your video misleads people into thinking that the best option is the swap. Once you consider depreciation and loss of ride quality you've more than surpassed the extra cost.
So we can agree that factory airbags have constant issues. 👍🏻
I’m not misleading people I’m showing them what I did so they can consider it as an option. This is a public channel, here they can see everyone’s likes, comments and views on the subject.
@@GarageBoys yeah, I fully admit that BUT as you fail to see, the way you present your video you make ZERO mention of options which in my opinion if YOU'RE A MECHANIC is unforgivable and misleading
