I read her daughters book. Her daughter was neglected by both parents & had to fend for herself. Also, her mother's former agent told Sasha that Shirley sabotaged her acting career. There are some people that shouldn't be parents.

This was during the Cultural revolution that killed something like 60 million people, but I'm sure they treated her like royalty when she was there. I wish I had saved it as a great example of elitist Hollywood kookery. The fact of the matter is that Shirley spent little quality time with her daughter, especially after her daughter was sent to live in Japan. She said that her career came first, something she was intent on. Her daughter said visits between them, which were rare, were pleasant for only about four hours before Shirley became aggravated at having an intruder, i.e., her daughter. Once, Shirley locked her daughter and a friend of the daughter in the bathroom for misplacing airline tickets, thinking they cashed them in for money. For Christmas one year, Shirley forgot to pick her daughter up from boarding school in Europe. Later, Shirley refused to pay for college for her child. So, yes, listeners have to infer the reality that though Shirley had a child, most of the abbreviated time they spent together was generally unpleasant.

If she were some nobody in Idaho no one would have given a rat's a@@. And with each new edition (there's been four now) she sh-ts out "never before mentioned" accounts of how bad mommie deareast was. Here's some irony....I'm 53 now, but when I was in my late 20s, I would tell others that if a movie was ever made about my life, Shirley MacLaine would play as my mother. And yet, I didn't know one darn thing about the woman, other than knowing that she was quite eccentric, similar to my mom. They even looked similarly to each other.
. My mother was a toxic narcissist who enjoyed pitting her children and family against each other, as she enjoyed the attention. She also preferred sons over daughters. And later in life, she cut me off, too. Because if she couldn't control you, she didn't want anything to do with you.
Apparently, I didn't realize what a dead ringer that my mom was for Shirley. I don't think Shirley quite understood the reasons for reincarnation. If she did, she would have done all she could to be a good mother and not be a home wrecker, so that she doesn't get reincarnated and instead, her soul reaches Nirvana. When you're that wealthy, there's no excuse for being a crappy and distant parent.

Shirleys daughter was raised by her Husband in Japan. She was sent
out there to protect her from kidnapping because Frank Sinatra Jr
had been kidnapped. Her husband was a conman and had Shirley
convinced that he was a clone of her husband and her real husband was in space. This was a super secret government project that needed
to be funded which Mc Claine did. This con man was living with
his Japanese girlfriend spending all of Shirley’s money. The daughter
recounts how his father and his girlfriend would fly to one American
city for dinner and a European city for dessert then fly back to Japan!
Shirley’s daughter went to live with her when she was 18. That is when
Shirley told her how special her dad was, how he worked for the government, the space thing etc. Her daughter blew up and told her
she was being conned, Shirley got mad at her daughter and wouldn’t listen. However, in a few days Shirley hired a private investigator. When she got the report back her daughter overheard her mother
on the phone with her dad telling him off and saying she was going
to divorce him which she did. Read the book. The neglect was from
her Dad. I doubt Shirley even knew about it.

If you emotionally neglect your child, leave her with her verbally abusive father, and don't pick her up at Christmas so that the child has to be taken in by strangers, I'd say you're a bad parent.

@@Muirmaiden yeah, but it's your opinion, not mine. I don't think this is so bad. and actually, the daughter was raised in Japan, and in this country little children are usually left alone from a very young age (5 yo), and this is normal. Christmas wasn't a big deal in japan in that period, and today Christmas is a lover's rendez-vous, not a family one. what I mean is, her behavior is VERY CONSISTENT with the way she CHOSE to raise her daughter. IN JAPAN. not in America, or England or anywhere else where leaving a child alone and not showing up for Christmas is a big deal.

@@dianemoril7612 That's child neglect and endangerment. Neither of her parents showed up to take her home and strangers took her in. Strangers! Luckily, they were kind, but what if they weren't? As a parent, your children's safety and well-being is your top priority. Leaving them to fend for themselves and/or exposing them to potentially dangerous situations is abuse, period.

I have always like her spunk and feistiness. But.. being a single Mom who raised three kids on my own, I can never understand not helping your child or spending time with them. Leaving her alone at Christmas for example is cold and unloving. So yeah I don't see a lot of maternal love in this lady. So guess I am now less a fan.

Shirley in an interview mentioned how she was not going to end up like her mother. Shirley and Warren Beatty’s mother was an acting coach I think and she settled into being a stay at home mother to raise her kids. Instead of being grateful for that, Shirley looks down at her and decides that her family is an obstacle to her career and neglects her only daughter. That is heartbreaking and disturbing. Good for sachi for raising herself, she didn’t do too bad of a job

a good actress, ok, i'll give her that though i have not seen very many of her movies, but i do think she's a lousy human being. and i thought that about her before i knew how she treated her own daughter. so full of herself.....
