The only gripe I have with Henry was Sharon Miller's decision to disregard his rebuild entirely and require him to need special coal. At least that was corrected in King Of The Railway.
Henry had the best character arc of season 1 and we came close to never having that story. He also had one of the very best character theme tunes in the show.
In response to your question about how he could he so thoroughly rebuilt without dying: He was rebuilt at Crewe. They were famous for taking the name & numberplates off an engine, cutting it up, then building a new one, & bolting the old plates to it! Hence, they could put the expense against the revenue account (for a rebuild), as opposed the capital account (for ordering a new locomotive). This kept the investor's pockets nice & full. I imagine that all of the surviving Mk1 Henry would be a lever or two and the whistle, perhaps.
The LMS are quite known for taking apart medium-sized to even small tender engine and rebuilding them into bigger Goods or Express engines so it's very well possible not to mention since Crewe is a part of the LMS
Honestly, I think it would have been awesome if Henry came back from Crewe as a straight-up LMS Black-Five in the show. When I was a kid and they mentioned him coming back in a new shape, I couldn't see a difference between that and his old one. Making him a black-five would definitely distinguish him better from Gordon.
Well the main/only difference in the show was the shape of the firebox. They couldn’t have completely rebuilt Henry’s Gauge 1 model because of their budget at the time.
Here's how I see Henry in his old shape, and how I debunked the "2 Henrys" theory: In his old shape, Henry was an GNR B1 4-6-0 with the boiler of a C1 4-4-2, thus explaining the small firebox. After Henry's major derailment in 1935, the only original piece that was kept on him during his rebuild was his smokebox (and that includes his face). That way, he retained his memories and voice from his old shape.
I'd like to see more people adapting the stories with Henry as his originally-intended 4-4-2. The big question of course is; if one depicts Henry as the 4-4-2 he was meant to be, should one continue to include him as a Black Five post-Flying Kipper, or merely keep him as he was?
If Henry was illustrated as Awdry wanted. Two things could happen. One: Awdry could possibly have not written backstories for the characters. Two: He could have possibly phased out Henry all together.
@@isitredormaroon2196 I mean he only wanted to phase out Henry *because* of the headaches the illustrators caused. No badly-drawn henry would mean no desire to axe him due to the illustrations. That means the only time that Henry has to risk being axed is in The Sad Story of Henry, which he originally intended to just end with him stuck in the tunnel forever. However, I doubt his basis would have changed the publishers demands for a happy ending.
If Henry was kept as a GCR Robinson 4-4-2 as intended, it would be more likely that he could’ve been rebuilt as a 4-6-0 with the same shape. Some Robinson Atlantic’s were built with the option to change them into Ten-Wheelers with just a swap of the frames. Seems likely Henry would’ve been rebuilt as such in order to keep up with the other engines.
I always assumed they kept his face and smokebox, melted down his broken bits, and rebuilt them into a Black 5 and reattached the rest. It's even suggested in the official backstories that the owner of Crewe owed the Fat Controller a HUGE favor.
Personality in my head canon I think henry was a prototype for the black fives but there was all the problems that Henry had and the lms decided not to continue the class until after the kipper crash where with the help from sir topham hatt he was rebuilt into the shape the black five was built into
I think in heritage circle the thinking goes if the frames are original so is the overall engine, regardless of what else has been swapped out/replaced.
I think a great result of Henry’s design being inconsistent until Awdry had to change it himself to a real one has been a benefit for the Railway Series as a whole just because the designs have always been very nice and close to their real world counterparts.
The reading railroad in the US rebuilt a number of old 2-8-0 consolidations into 4-8-4 northerns, and the Virginian's Triplex, a 2-8-8-8-4, was rebuilt into a 2-8-2 mikado and a 2-8-8-0 so this does happen in real life.
I absolutely love this introspection on the character basis for Henry the Green Engine. Thanks for consistently developing new content! Your channel is gaining traction rapidly and I'm glad I'm here to enjoy
Here's my theory as to why Henry was able to be changed from a Hybrid Gresley Pacific to a standard Stanier Black 5. In the RWS story "Out of Puff", Henry took on some bad coal which caused his performance to become dreadful to the point where he was struggling to breathe. When Henry stopped his train at Wellsworth, The story goes that quote *"The fireman cleared away more ashes, but when he tried to close Henry's smokebox door it did not make the air tight fit that it should have done".* This resulted said door being warped out of shape. Why is this one line of dialogue important? Well, it's pretty much confirms that the faces on all of the steam locomotive characters in the RWS can hinge open allowing access to the internals of the smokebox. It's also pretty common knowledge that the engines can feel when parts of their "bodies" have either been detached for maintenance or in the case Douglas in the CGI episode "Love Me Tender" completely ripped off from themselves. In my head cannon; when Henry was sent to be quote unquote "rebuilt" at Crewe, the workmen there simply unscrewed Henry's face from his original Hybrid body and installed it onto a newly built Stanier Black 5 body that was altered to accept his Gresley inspired smokebox door design. Perhaps his warped smokebox door from that same RWS story that I mentioned was simply a bi-product of this interesting conversion.
That is 100% the best way to resolve the Two Henries paradox. Although questions would arise should the C1 and Black 5 smokebox doors be different sizes.
@@MrJoeyWheeler I feel like Stanier was already in talks with Topham about rebuilding Henry long before the Kipper crash and must've already drawn up a one off smokebox design that could accommodate Henry's face if that were to occur
For illustrator's mistakes of making Henry look like Gordon, Awdry soon decided to use this as new spare parts for him, although they still didn't help out much with his steaming issues.
I have a theory planning why Henrys rejected LNER design was converted into a LMS black 5. So, in the lore the LMS agreed with the NWR to have their passage trains from somewhere on the Brendan branch, thru Victarstown into LMS trackage. I don't know if the locomotive works at Crewe serviced all of the big four railways locomotives, or just LMS but perhaps since Henry was hauled to crewe on LMS tracks, maybe the workmen there figured a black 5 look and design would fit well for rebuilding since Henry was a 4-6-0 and discussed it with Sir Tophem.
Everyone: Rebuilding an engine to something completely different is impossible! Southern Railway: (ahem) *_rebuilds all SECR K classes (which were unreliable for other reasons) to completely new U classes after one got in the Sevenoaks accident that killed 13 people_*
Here’s a thought. Since Henry was based off an GNR design (midland built mind you) then would it make sense that Henry could be rebuilt into an LNER design. A Thompson B1 would make sense as they are considered the LNER equivalent to the black 5. The only thing that really changes besides his design is the date of the crash having to be during/post ww2 and the workshop he was being rebuilt in( likely darlington)
Honestly, Henry being rebuilt actually does make some sense. Here's the thing with steam locomotives from that era - they were all still hand-built with manual tools in a pre-industrial fashion. Everything would have to be hand-fitted. What they probably did with the rebuild was use the plans for the Black Five as a basis and adapted them to keep the parts of Henry that worked as intended while fixing any issues.
Henry may not need Special Coal anymore but he is still special to us Henry's history is arguably the most fascinating! Can you imagine the timeline of he was sent away for good or if he wasn't purchased by Sir Topham Hatt!
Funny how Awdry had to come up with an in-universe excuse to get Henry into the exact shape of a real existing locomotive which is the reason the amazing story, The Flying Kipper exists. I think Awdry was trying to do the same thing with Thomas with Thomas Comes To Breakfast when he found an excuse to make Thomas have even less E2 features by giving him a new flat running board after his crash because he wanted him to be a different locomotive to an E2.
In my Thomas and friends head cannon, Henry is a LMS black 5 just how Thomas is an LB&SRC E3 and Percy is a GWR Trojan *this is just my Thomas and friends head cannon*

Well I don’t really see the problem, at least from a visual standpoint. Are we just not going to talk about how Henry (in the model series) looked straight like a black 5 after his rebuild in season 1, but for some reson gained wheel arches in season 2 and looked like a jubilee from then on?

On the Frisco railroad in the United States. They rebuild a set of 2-10-2's into 4-8-2's. The only part that was used from the rebuild was the steam dome where it bolted to the boiler, however because the locomotive serial number is stamped into the dome the engines could be considered rebuilds despite having almost nothing from the previous locomotive. I dont know how the sentient train thing works here but it's something to consider from a technical aspect.
A few things I’m suddenly thinking about Henry: If Henry I was a Gresley design, does this mean he had Gresley’s conjugated valve gear? Or did his builder thought it too complicated and went only with Walschaerts valve gear? Henry was said to be a mix between an A1 and a C1, and from most illustrations we may say that he had the underframes and motions of an A1 but with a C1 boiler, thus making his firebox “small”. But C1s aren’t small engines themselves, in fact they were the first in UK to have such wide fireboxes. Would a C1 boiler really be underpowered for an A1 chassis? Who could’ve built Henry? If we think of railways that were rivals of Gresley or the GNR, the Midland would be a possibility, and a lot of people do think Henry’s from MR. However, MR opted for small engine policy, so I highly doubt it’d be MR. Could it be LNWR? Or maybe the NER or NBR wanting to create publicity to match GNR? The NER did it with their A2, so maybe NBR? Or maybe was it one of the private builders? Although private builders usually make smaller engines, but Vulcan Foundry and North British did have the ability, could it be them? All in all it’s just me overthinking lol
I wonder how much did it cost to convert Henry and how much extra did it cost to run him with Welsh coal. My head cannon is that Sir Topham paid the conversion from Flying Kipper accident's insurance money.

@@ItsTrainBoy I was actually referring to the story in general. Everyone always mentions how Henry got blocked up in the tunnel, but never the episode that came right after that.
That isn’t the most confusing thing about Henry. He literally went from being a cocky, fussy gentle giant to a literal tree hugger. I honestly missed the days where Henry boasted. I mean he didn’t do it as much as Gordon or James so if was good for his character.
Honestly I have to agree, but at the same token I do really appreciate the soft side of Henry. With problem(s) 🤣 idk why that made me laugh so much
He was originally suppose to be a Antlantic C2 or C8 I believe a stronger version of a 4-4-0.
Rev Awdry : planned to get rid of Henry but later changed his mind and kept him cause the fans wanted more of him.
Mattel: gets rid of Henry for more female characters, ignores the angry fans, most likely will never change there minds to bring back him or Edward back to the steam team and had the guts to have reboot Thomas call him and Edward THOSE TRAINS!!
How did i miss this
Darn school making me trainboy's videos
Henry’s original basis is a GNR C1. Alice, a fan made character (not made by me but someone else) is a large boiler C1
Well Henry’s original basis was a C1
I’ve said before, and I will say again, engines being rebuilt into a new shape is not something unusual.
Thanks for the Wilbert 'bruh' meme.
You referenced the unlucky tug gasp!
Thank you
Henry's Just A Mess So Very Confusing
1919-1922 Basis Disorder
1923-1926 Resembles Gordon Too Much
1926-1935 he's Sickly
1935-2011 Two Henries? MK1 And MK2 WHAAAAT?
me: trying to figure out how trainz works bc i wanna make a cool video bout it
my brain: ooooh trainboy has posted new video
me: what
my brain: trainboy has posted new video !!!
me: say no more !
Lnwr claughtons were rebuilt in to lms patriots and they don’t look the same.
Heres Hen Hen
Honestly, my issue with Henry is the Black 5. I like the class but the LNER origins, I think an LNER/GNR class would've made more sense. Say a B1, B17, V2 or maybe just an actual C1 Atlantic
Personally i think henry was a custom gnr c1 atlantic but was rebuilt to a gcr atlantic
my take is that henry is etiher a LMS Jubilee or LMS Bahamas since both of them had wheel arch like henry in the show
and also jubilee's are built between 1934-1936 and henry was rebuild in 1935 so it makes sense
as for bahammas, henry even mention bahamas in the story while he was being rebuild
In the crew they just removed the boiler with out the firebox. Thats my theory how they remobuild henry.
Henry :)
Admit it, who just got finished watching Sodors Finest: Henry when getting the notification for this video?
oh look! its the only video that he posted on 9/10/21!
I was wondering if you'll get to that soon.
Just to ask, will there be another capsule plarail video?
Henry the Dank Kush Engine
two green engines that were a concern for wilbert awdry UBE
Also have you ever considered opening a discord server?
Off topic but u should do a scruffy model history or Rusty it will be interesting
Do you have clearance to use the 20th Century Fox fanfare , which is copyrighted?
This all The illustrator fault
Wilbert Awdry- GNR C1 (Right)
William Middleton- LNER A1/A2 ) Right
Reginald Payne- LNER A1 (Ok?)
Clarence Dalby- LNER A1 With A GNR C1 Body And 4-6-0 Wheel Configuration Seriously!!??
Cool
Who was the gentleman with facial hair in one picture with the Reverend? His son Christopher?
Henry the GCR 8B/LNER C4 Atlantic?
Henry the confusing engine.
Alas, if only people knew that the episode Edward, Gordon & Henry exists.
In the states we just call it “Henry To The Rescue.” Kinda a drab title imo.
@@ItsTrainBoy I was actually referring to the story in general. Everyone always mentions how Henry got blocked up in the tunnel, but never the episode that came right after that.
I believe henry is a lner a1 Pacific prototype i believe hes not a hybrid.
Sir Topham Hatt wanted a GNR C1 Atlantic instead of Henry.
I always saw it as he was both, when he was insecure or felt he needed to be (like around the bigger engines) he was a jerk and tried to keep the status he thought he had. Then once he’s more on his own he has this softer side that comes out. Or perhaps it’s just a gradual maturing? I’m not sure, but I never really disliked that he had a thing for nature. It was oddly unique back then
@@ItsTrainBoy Maybe maturing yes. I do like his love for nature. But I’m not a fan of them exaggerating and overdoing his character in s25 (maybe I got the season wrong but it was around the last 2 season before his replacement. It wasn’t as much as James’ consistent over the top bragging, thank God.
James has much better character consistency than henry
It’s Thomas’s world
What about when Henry in season 3, didn't need special coal anymore because he was fixed, but Hit Entertainment In It's Good To Be Gordon, in season 10, repeated Henry having special coal!!
That’s more just HiT doing what they do best and not doing their research lol; the show even pokes fun at it in CGI which was one of the few times I was all for CGI.
@TrainBoy That's the truth, Hit Entertainment not doing there research lol!
@@LBSC_Railway_Production Haha man it was something! I remember growing up during that time and being so confused by the characters. They’d just change them out of nowhere! 🤣
@@ItsTrainBoy I understand Awdry didn't approve of Henry having a hobby in the tv series and Hit not knowing about rule 55
@TrainBoy Remember that Mattel doesn't do there research either some of the characters personality was change completely! I guess the both of them should've did some Thomas homework!! 😂
