Not about branding, but about herding cattle with patrol cars. Many moons ago as a young police officer working night shift at Clemson University, cattle escaped from the dairy farm. We laboriously herded them back using lights, sirens and spotlights. They bottlenecked at the gate.
At the gate was an old character cop, kind of like Fish from Barney Miller. As soon as they got to him the cattle picked up a trot and literally sprinted through.
"Hey W.W." I asked, "How did you get them to go in?"
"I sang to them," he replied.

    Of course not!
On another note, besides cattle and horses, were/are other livestock branded?

Thanks again Santee & Co. I was in the navy as an Operations Specialist . Every enlisted rating has a symbol they wear on their sleeve and is a pictiogram of the wearers' job . For instance , crosed anchors is Boatswain's Mate . crossed cannons is Gunner's Mate , a ship's wheel is Quartermaster , a rangefinder with lightning bolts is Fire Controlman , etc . Add wings to the symbol and you have the aviation version of the rating , such as Aviation Boatswain's Mate . This video made me consider that sailors wear a brand of sorts . I'm glad I didn't have to come under a red hot iron , though . My ' brand " was an oscilloscope with an arrow , symbolizing direction and rangefinding via radar . Next time you see some sailors in their dress uniforms , try playing a game by looking at the symbol on their left sleeve and guess their job . Guess these jobs : 1 two snakes on a winged staff , 2 a pair of headphones and an arrow , 3 a flaming bomb with wings , 4 a torpedo , 5 a harp . Well , See Y'all down the trail !

They were old school castrating, inoculating, de-horning, and branding on the ground. My job was either castrating or holding the calf by the rear legs while someone else did the deed. The calf sometimes baptized me with manure but Rocky Mountain oysters hot off the angle iron branding iron support made up for the smell. I still have my stock knife..... 🤣

that was Rex’s favorite job so far…it’s not his fault that he got amazing discounts on meat 😉
and there’s a joke up here about branding irons: the logo of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is a branding iron imprint, it explains why we’re treated like cattle 😳

Hey Santee, a few weeks ago I asked you if you could do a video about jokes and pranks in the old west. Well I did a little bit of research and found out that there is a book from 1852 called "the evils of deception" it apparently is about some pranks for April fools day. I also found one prank from 1854 where you put a brick inside of an old hat on the ground and when someone's walks by and kicks the hat they also kick they brick and hurt their foot. (Pranks have come a long way)

Your joke about Texas barbecue hit close to home here. Better part of a decade ago I was on a job in Texas fore 3 weeks and afterwards spent an extra 2 weeks going to a number of BBQ places. I went everywhere from Amarillo to McAllen and El Paso to Beaumont. Best place in my opinion was in Balmorhea, hopefully they are still running.

Today's episode reminded me of John Dutton's "Yellowstone" Ranch in Montana. The cowboys who make big mistakes or witness something they shouldn't have... *"Y".*

I think it would have been interesting if you showed how the blacksmiths made some of those old irons, since they were made without being welded together.

When COVID lifts we'll get to interviewing a blacksmith.

It may come as a surprise to you, BUT I helped to brand cattle when I was a kid, yup, in the sixties.
I handed the branding iron from the fire to the branding guy.

Outstanding video and topic Santee, thank you for your effort. I have a branding iron from my grandfather ranch and have found this topic interesting. What ever you do, do not try to brand Rex.

my hometown has a brand with two crossed arrows and a snake winding up on them, another one I know of is a single deer antler and a olive branch. the funny thing both of them belong to the same horse breeder and they have a third party breeder who has two antlers with olive branch.

I made a brand to represent the ranch in the fantasy western novel I wrote. I got it done up as a tattoo over my left ankle. I'm quite sure that was less painful than getting an iron put to me haha!
