So, this was the song that introduced The Watcher, who went on to be mentioned in The Far Side and Godhunter, and was the perspective character/“singer” (obviously Aviators was the real singer) of A Castle on the Sea. Did I miss any? It’s interesting to see him evolve from a “fearsome ghoul” (as per this song’s description) to “the only god with the power to take action” of A Castle on the Sea, who says “for all that remains/just sacrifice me/I’ll hide away in a castle on the sea.”. I wonder if the difference is due to the differing perspectives of the songs (presumably ‘some random dead person’ for this one vs The Watcher himself for aCotS) or if Aviators’ idea of the character changed over the years. So, what do we know about The Watcher? He seems to be associated with death or at least some kind of afterlife (see: all of this song and the way his dwelling in aCotS, which I assume is the same location as this song, is said to be “a cold fort between/your ailing home and afterlife’s wither”. And The Far Side’s description of “...The Watcher’s castle full of ice/it’s a comforting hold for the wandering souls to stay”.), as well as dreams (in aCotS the titular castle is said to be “a bastion only seen in your dreams”, and he appeared to the perspective character of Godhunter in their dreams). Furthermore, he seems to be tied to civilization in some way, as he says “and you could bring back the light to the last home/of civilization, without which I’m gone”, which is interesting. Beyond that, we know that he’s a god, as per aCotS’s Bandcamp description- and judging by all the talk of his godsoul and him living between life and the afterlife, he seems to be a power beyond the Ascended/whatever one wants to call the beings Godhunter hunts/is one of, who are also described as gods (see, well... GODhunter). He also 1: was able to give his soul away and 2: survived giving his soul away without even going ‘hollow’ Dark Souls style or anything, though he did seem to have to “hide away in a castle on the sea”. Did he survive because his home/the castle is essentially removed from life and death, being located between “your ailing home and afterlife’s wither”, or due to some inherent trait of his? Regardless, even after giving his soul away he was still able to manifest in the dreams of the perspective character of Godhunter (assuming Godhunter occurs sometime chronologically after aCotS, which I think makes more sense than the alternative). The one he gave his soul to in aCotS is presumably the singer of Godhunter, as the lyrics mention that The Watcher had appeared in the singer’s dreams to tell them the Godhunter was coming for his “due”, which would presumably be his soul as the singer had reneged on the whole “so take this godsoul to bring forth a new dawn/I’ll forgive the death you’ve earned/the cities you’ve burned/the lessons we’ve learned” deal and triggered the “yet a risk is a attached/with this unholy pact/if forsaken I’ll come from the shadows” side of things. It’s also interesting that he describes the pact as “unholy”. I wonder if it’s because of The Watcher’s own nature (though sacrificing oneself to save civilization doesn’t seem like very unholy behavior), the nature of the act itself (a god giving away his own soul to a dead mortal), or the nature of the recipient of the soul, who is after all the kind of guy that’s earned death by burning cities in the past, and seems likely to have gone on to do so again in the future. But if the singer of Godhunter still had The Watcher’s due/soul by then, clearly it didn’t just revert back to The Watcher the moment the deal was broken and the guy became a tyrant, and clearly The Watcher didn’t literally “come from the shadows” to reclaim it himself, which implies to me that (barring dreams) after giving away his soul he really was stuck in his castle on the sea. The way it’s phrased (“he told me she’ll come to take his due/“the hate in your head, she has more”, he said/ “the Godhunter waits for you””) kind of makes it seem like he’s using the Godhunter to do so as a proxy/stand-in for him, which makes me wonder if he facilitated her rise to power in some way... after all, trapped outside of this world or not, “a deal with The Watcher should not be taken lightly...”. Besides “What and who is The Watcher?”, another interesting question is “What on Earth happened to him post-Godhunter?” Did his soul return to him upon the Godhunter’s slaying of the singer of Godhunter (Overlapping song and character names really do make for some stilted and confusing phrasing.)? What was he up to during the Godhunter’s “inevitable loss of purpose and sanity” in No More Heroes? You’d think he might want to help with that, she did presumably get his soul back for him after all... Speaking of No More Heroes, the lines in that about “the immortal angel’s child” are very thought-provoking. They make me think of Godhunter’s line about “the daughter of the Reaper has been searching for the Keeper”. The Watcher does seem kind of Death/Reaper-like... is he meant to be the Reaper? Is the Godhunter meant to be the daughter? She could also be the Keeper (No More Heroes also has a line about “the Keepers of the Bleeding Sun” and I think the word/title is also used elsewhere a few times, but I can’t remember specifically.), or neither of them. It does make one wonder, though. Sorry if I got any of the lyrics/quotes wrong, a lot of that was from memory.
You're right, it actually makes more sense for A Castle on the Sea to be *before* the events of Godhunter, not after. At first I thought it was a dark epilogue because it's so late in the album, but then Too Late For a Savior makes much more sense on the relisten if it takes place *after* aCotS, and TLFaS *definitely* takes place before Godhunter.
I think the unholy pact could be more because the watcher is breaking his own rules hence "Now I've broken all the rules I've written/Just to bring you to this cold fort between" Which could imply he doesn't take interacting with people still alive lightly, unless they are dreaming or what it could also mean is this limbo is at one place, but the castle on the sea is off in the distance where no one is allowed, or even both, because then it would explain the unholy pact of him either bringing him back to life, via giving away all of or at least part of his soul, or giving him the soul to increase his power but interacting with on who is still alive.
@@nicholaspaynter3581 I wonder if this song's main character might be the God King? He refers to the city he walks through as formerly his and expresses fear as to where he's going. It's thin but I do wonder
@Guardian Naga wasn't the hunter defeated by the ascended in godhunter and then changed or made into something new, and in a way that could mean changed and reborn. Idk I feel like I'm reaching now...
This album holds such a special place in my heart. Each song has its unique story with their own universe and characters... And yet resonate with each other.
"The Watcher is about a man in limbo (hence the art style) between the afterlife and the real world. He wanders an icy city while he waits for a mysterious "watcher" to decide his fate and take him up the staircase or down to to suffer... It's a dark fairytale of a man stuck between two worlds, and a fearsome ghoul who wants to take him to the next." -the description
I remember having several dreams about something/a place like this long before both a friend introduced me to your channel; and before this song was released. I remember a man I dreamed of begging to Jesus stating that "I'm not a wicked man; but I fear the cells below." I felt bad for him, so I asked Jesus to send him to heaven instead of the cells since he was scared of them. Apparently one of the angels that turned up in one of the many dreams that I had of that place saved me from the basement, but scared me half to death in the process. In another dream that I had of that place I found out that the stairs leading up went to heaven, and the stairs going down went to hell. What sucks for me is that I almost never forget my dreams, and this song brought the dreams I had of that place back hard. :/
All I have to add to this is that when angels appear to humans in the Bible they pretty much always have to disclaim that they are neither gods nor demons on account of being both that beautiful and that intimidating. "Scared half to death" seems pretty standard for such an encounter.
This track is so haunting... I know I create so many remixes of your songs (and I also want to remix this one), but it's because I get so inspired by them. :) Great work as always!
Mysterious and a little bit creepy. But it makes this song especially interesting. Good one. :) Ignorance is Bliss would be a great song to upload. With its deep meaning it gives a lot to think of. One of my favs of the album.

Never heard of it. I'll check it out, thanks :)
+Missbudderpie incorrect my friend, limbo is a place not just a game, the man in the picture is IN limbo, not from the game
+Missbudderpie But also I think the art is very much inspired from the game

Amazing, Avi! Truly!
One of the songs i listen to at night with lights off.
I can't quite put my finger on why, but this gives me Hotel California vibes. A haunting nowhere sort of place.
Amazing ! It kinda fits The Fool from The lord of the Mysteries (webnovel) !
