      Yep yep yep!! One of the very few realistic vehicles in Star Wars. Doesn’t even have treads either, so even on Earth, the AAT would be crazy effective. A tank that is incapable of getting stuck on terrain. 360 turret, extremely durable armor.

We've seen tanks in the real world that are comparable to the AAT, while the AT-TE and the like are a little farther out there. As for why have independent crew, as opposed to a droid brain? It was made by the trade federation, probably as a product. Not everyone wanted a droid army, but a (by SW galaxy standards) Cheap, reliable, and effective tank would be something that's quite marketable.

    • @odinlindeberg4624
      @odinlindeberg4624 2 года назад +10

      @@jamesm783 Not to mention that the CIS maintained other armies as well as the droid army, making exclusively droid tanks a logistical weakness.
      That said, the biggest improvement I could think of for the AAT would be removing the torpedo tubes from the foot of the tank and instead giving it a missile launcher on the turret, akin to the M2 Bradley's wire guided TOW launcher addon and making the bottom more of a storage rack.
      That way the tank can shoot from a hull-down position (using terrain to hide most of the tank from the target you're shooting at) without giving up the use of its most powerful weapon. You could also load missiles from one tank to another, making it less necessary to be strict with how often you fire missiles since they're not locked in a case that can only be opened back in the lucrehulk you deployed from.

    • @erdervv
      @erdervv 3 года назад +21

      The M5A1 Stuart was a scout tank not designed for frontline combat.
      The S-35 like most other french tanks at the start of WW2 has better armor, better guns and used more advanced tech than the opposing german tanks. They still proved less effective than early model of Panzer 3s.
      Turns out having your commander command the tank, command the rest of the tanks if he's the squadron leader, spot targets, fire the gun, man the turret, reload the gun, and use the radio is a sure way to overwork a man to the point of making him combat ineffective.
      A commander can not juggle all those rolls at the same time without giving up many of them.
      Of those the only role a T-34 commander did not have was reloading because the T-34 had a loader in the turret, a turret that did not have a basket so it played merry hell on the crew every time they had to rotate it.
      The reason the T-34/76 had the commander manning the gun is simply that the red army needed everything they could throw at the germans as fast as they could make it.
      In fact, as soon as they could start production of a better tank without the massive, massive ammounts of glaring defects the 76 model had, the T-34/85 was put in production and it indeed had a 3 man turret with a gunner, a loader and a commander.
      The commnader-gunner team is simply more effective than any commander that also has to work as a gunner, all modern tank designs use that system because it leads to better awareness, survivability, faster threat detection and better gunnery.
      Anyone in a galaxy far far away with a thousands years long history of major galactice warfare that still decides to put all that strain on a MBT commander deserves to be ridiculed and made fun off.
      In fact, considering the...let's say computational capacity of the average battledroid in the CIS, that they even entrusted them with both roles is nothing short of mind boggling.

    "The clone wars" show is good, dont get me wrong, but it debuffed everything to the point of being awkward.
    In the phantom menace, the shells (yes, the AAT main gun fired shells in that movie but they might have swapped them) fired travelled as quickly as modern day shells fired by tank if not faster (it is confirmed that star wars slug based weaponry or rail guns could even fire shells at 3/5 km/s) and even when crashing on a shield you could see what the sheer power of that shell, in "the clone wars"? This tank is claery project for Wolfpack tactics with a good crew trained for this. But if the CIS would improve this tank can leave the crew and make some space for an A. I.
    An autonomous tank like this without a crew can be a VERY DANGEROUS for in battle.

      I've always wandered about that. They had a droid gunship that didn't need pilots so I don't see why they can't make the tank like the gunship. If you take out the crew equation, the enemy wouldn't be able to capture it and use it against you. Other benefits are that you can make the tank more compact and there is no lag time between spotting the enemy and shooting it.

      @@btrando1 Part of it is the Star Wars universe's general reluctance to use their powerful A.I. to its full potential, but the best in-universe explanation is that it was intended to be usable by organic crew in addition to droids. The original contractors might have hoped they could sell it to non-droid armies, and the CIS had lots of non-droid soldiers they would want to support. (The Umbarans, for example.) Because B1 droids can serve any role a human can, the most efficient thing to do for mass-production is to make a tank that can be used by either humans or droids. (This is also why Separatist ships have hallways and life support, even when entirely crewed by droids. Also helps when organic leaders want to stop by or use the ship.

    People don’t seem to understand how perfect of a design this is for your average battle tank: light, quick, manoeuvrable, can function on most terrain, not expensive, only a 4 man crew, decently powerful primary gun, secondary guns for protection, slanted armour and perfectly compliments infantry. This is the ideal tank you want to mass produce for your army; not a heavy tank with the most powerful cannon and thickest armour as they are a huge financial commitment, sluggish, more vulnerable to breakdowns, poorly manoeuvrable, a bigger target and are a massive loss when inevitably destroyed.

With this range it becomes a case of matching shell to target and picking the biggest boom possible that will reliably affect a target as AP wont kill many infantry and a HE wont get into a bunker to begin with.

    When playing the older Battlefront games my buddies and I came to this conclusion when certain vehicles were left open to grab and use immediately. The droid tank was on that very list, just under the clone gunship. The sabre tanks the clones used were fast, but the firepower was limited. You had to turn your entire tank to face your target to bring your main heavy weapons to bare. The droid tank had that 360 degree movable turret and in 2-3 shots was enough to seriously cripple and or destroy a sabre tank and other vehicles. The sabre's main beam weapons took 5 to do the same where it's missiles took 2-3 salvos. Again had to turn to face your enemy to bring to bare those weapons. The turret turning rate was on the slow side, but since you could turn your entire tank on a dime it made sense to turn the tank and the turret to bring your main gun to bare with good coordination at a faster rate.

      I think the replies given so far to this comment are great for a 1 v 1 exchange between an AAT and ATAT. But, let's say the 4 ATATs versus 20 AATs.
      The ATAT has the advantage in height, armor, and fire power. However, the AAT has the advantage in maneuverability. The ATAT, though well armored, is not invincible.
      I think the factors we are missing to help clear up a 4 v 20 battle would be the actual fire power of the AATs tanks and how many shots from the AAT could the ATATs take before they finally broke through their armor. And if the AATs are constantly outflanking the ATATs then there might be a chance. Especially if the ATATs have no support.
      Thoughts?

    Funnily enough; if the AAT was brought down to real-world tanks, or if real-world tanks were upgraded with SW tech, the AAT would be know as a terrible tank for two reasons:
    1: its too tall. Supposedly it is close to 10 meters long, which means it is around 8-9 meters tall. (Comparison: M1 Abrams, 2.44 meters height; M1 Bradley, 2.98 meters. And both of those are considered too tall in some circles.)
    This is way too tall and means that it will find less cover to hide behind and get into hull-down positions. This also means it is a fire magnet, being less likely to have incoming fire miss it. There is no reason its main gun should be that high either. This leads into the second point...
    2: The AAT has shit gun depression, as in, there is no gun depression. Because the main gun is mounted so high close to the roof of the vehicle, and so far to the rear of the vehicle so that the barrel is sticking out over a flat surface, the gun can't actually aim down below what seems to be around two or three degrees below perfectly level, otherwise the breach would hit the roof, or the barrel would hit the part its hanging over. (To go back to the Abrams example, the M1 Abrams gun depression is 10 degrees.) This means that the AAT can not fire effectively from behind defilade, and that the enemy would be easily able to engage whatever firing position the AAT would be limited to. So unless the repulsors can handle variable elevation and move the whole tank while it is stationary like the Swedish S-tank, that gun barrel can only point up.

Tank guns pivot on a fulcrum which means that there is mass ahead of the fulcrum which is the barrel; and mass to the rear of the fulcrum, which is the chamber and breach which act as a counter weight. In order for there to be that much gun depression, the back half of the gun would be sticking up out of the roof.
      Tank guns are like icebergs in a way, there is a portion you can see, and a portion that is blocked from view.

    • @matthiuskoenig3378
      @matthiuskoenig3378 3 года назад +1

      @@blah007001 its not a conventional gun though, you can't use modern chemical propellant gun logic on a heavy laser cannon. it doesn't need a breach its a 'heavy laser cannon' and the cross section shows its entirely infront of the fulcrum, with a cable heading into the hull for its charge battery. so no, there is no chamber or breach or mass to the rear of the fulcrum to act as a counter weight. is this bad design? maybe, it depends on the strength of the motors and the weight of the laser barrel, it would allow for vertical gun elevation, which considering its designed for urban warfare makes sense.
