This vehicle can't climb walls because it can't flex its long body to bend upward. The ATTE can flex the middle so the front legs can get up the wall while the four middle legs of the ATOT would be dangling until the bottom legs got on the wall and it wouldn't fare well if the side of the cliff wasn't similar to ground terrain.

Smaller but effective vehicles and space craft vs giant hulks of metal that while powerful were so massive they could be outmaneuvered and destroyed by things thousands of times smaller than them.

Perhaps the Republic wouldn't have been so strapped for credits if the invested in the superior Juggernaut and TX-130 tanks from the start, instead of the slow moving AT series. 300 troops in 1 Juggernaut would require 8 AT -OT/AT-TE walkers. Plus, you can always make varients of the Juggernaut that are dedicated to firepower instead of troop transport. Just imagine seeing multiple mass driver cannons racing towards you at 160 km/hr

Sure that sounds nice, but it leaves you really brittle, juggernaunts are to brittle to be overrelied on, they also can't handle nearly as many types of terrain, and it also ignores deployment of them, the juggernaunt was only really able to be deployed from acclimators, while the ATOT was definitely small enough a cargo LAAT could handle it, allowing them to actually reach multiple theaters of fighting

    • @GAJake
      @GAJake 7 дней назад

Yea a juggernaut & TX-130s pair is great as a heavy reinforcement once a landing zone for an acclamator can be established. They can penetrate an enemy line head on in open terrain and then exploit the enemy in the rear area.
However an ATTE / ATST combo is perfect for an air assault or airborne unit where they can be dropped by LAAT carriers for initial assaults. Supported by maybe one ITT marauder / TX130 unit like an army stryker too since they are faster than the walkers and still LAAT carrier transportable. Plus some ATRT / ISP recon units since they are relatively silent vehicles.

The phantom menace movie. The AAT tanks can't enter through the deflector shields that the gungans set up and when it's clear they can't take the shields down through barrages from the AATs they send in the B1 battledroids to disable the shields so that the repulsor tanks and MTTs can advanced and join the battle.
It's why after them attacking the shield initially you never see the AATs engage the gungans until the shields get taken down.
It's been a thing in both canon and legends that repsulsor craft can't get through deflector shields.

    @MetaNerdzLore Great video❤👌
I truly love the AT-OT and to explain WHY....
Here are some additions I'd like to point out
as to why this walker must have been the absolute GOAT of the Battlefield👇
To Adress the elephant in the room first.🐘
Here is why the OPEN TOP Design is actually GENIUS:
    1.
    As was rightly pointed out,
an enclosed armored top does not protect against targeted straving runs or bombs from enemy aircraft.
But an open top DOES give all troops inside additional situational awareness
    and
    room to react
in case an enemy aircraft is approaching.
And here comes the thing everyone forgets : MANPADS
MANPADS are a thing in star wars as shown in several episodes!
The open top allows troopers to quickly pull out a rocket launcher to repell any approaching fighter!
It could be pointed out that a closed armored top gives protection against light/medium blasterfire, against the elements and against shrapnel...
But here I may remind you that the troopers themselves ARE heavily armored and protected against all of those things.
And regarding to direct blaster fire:
There are 30+ armed men inside with lookouts and sensors to detect incoming fire.
    And 360 degrees
of fortified positions or cannons on this walker that will open fire at you the moment you reveal your position!
The resulting firepower can't be understated!
Add some clones carrying Anti Tank weapons (rocket launchers) and suddenly you have an absolute fortress of a walker!
The only achilles heel of the open Top design would be a DIRECT artillery hit!
But may I remind you that:
    a) landing direct artillery hit on a moving tank is very hard
    b) an AT-TE will also be compromised by a direct artillery hit but tbf would suffer less casualties
    c) Armies aren't stupid. They don't drive unarmoured open trucks or open top AT-OTs into an assault under enemy artillery fire
    d) you could also argue that the accompanying AT-TE & later AT-AP would immediately counter enemy artillery fire by immediately returning fire on their positions.
And HERE COMES YET ANOTHER benefit of the open top design (apart from cost and weight savings):
    Flexibility!!!!
Wanna cramp twice the amount of troops in there during a hectic retreat or offensive?
No Problem! There is room! Troops will manage! (As seen in countless wars here on earth)
Try the same thing with an AT-TE/AP/AT and you will find the limits real quick!!
    This possibility alone
    can decide battles and wars!!!
And now imagine the same things with cargo!!
(Just remove the seats and throw them out or put them in the cargo hold)
Have to reposition a whole base?
    No Problem!
Just stack everything up as high as possible!
Have to carry a bulky/unwieldy cargo?
Like say... a damaged AV-7 Artillery Canon?
    No Problem either!
Just load it up somehow and
    👏stack👏 it👏up👏
    And here comes yet 🎼"ANOTHERONE"
The AT-OT wouldn't even have problems carrying those heavy loads either
because it has TWO MORE LEGS!
    Which ALSO MEANS
    better weight distribution!!
So it even can cross muddier terrain and more fragile bridges than any AT-TE !
THE AT-OT IS A LOGISTICAL DREAM COME TRUE.
And LOGISTICS is what wins wars!!
Especially when you face an enemy with extremely advanced logistics like a DROID army.
    The AT-OT's
    INSANE flexibility
makes this thing an absolute OG
and backbone of the Grand Army of the Republic!
One of the most slept on vehicles in Star Wars History!
(If you read until here you are INDEED a true Nerd of Star wars Meta lore. Kudos and thank you!)

If it was truly that great, then why do we almost never see it in action? Also, while Manpads and Rocket launchers are a thing in Star wars, they are never used in big numbers, same goes for SAWs,mortars, mines, hand grenades and grenade launchers. This thing (or rather the crew) would immedeately be killed by guerellias using a rocket launcher or a machine gun and retreating directly after. Also it is not suited for urban combat. As for logistics, aircraft can do the same thing but better( atleast in Star Wars). Im not saying that they are complete Dogshit, they are far from it,but people here tend to praise the weapons of the GAR as if they were some godlike superweapons, which they are not. This vehicle would be good for certain missions and terrain always in combination with other vehicles. You raise some good points here and it certainly looks like you know alot about Star Wars and real life combat, but i think that you are overestimating this vehicle. 3:54 I don't know about western armies, but here in Ukraine soldiers often prefer to ride armored vehicles like BTR on top instead of inside. And the logic is pretty much the same - such vehicles are usually destroyed by mines or rockets and in both cases you have more chances to survive being on top of the transport.

Even though it was only on screen for a brief second, it immediately captured my interest. The mix of classic Republic design with the "archaic" open-top troop transport really stood out. I thought it fit perfectly with the campaign on Felucia. With dense vegetation, being able to quickly dismount infantry during an ambush or engagement makes sense. Its supported by infantry and other armoured vehicles in the column, which accounts for the difficulties and disadvantages. The comparison to the WWII halftrack is apt in how it weighs armour and speed, and how the vehicle itself is meant for transportation and infantry support rather than direct action.

I think the AT-OT is particularly great in dense or urban environment, like in fact felucia, where ambushes are relatively easy to pull of and an enclosed vehicle can quickly become a deathtrap. The AT-OT can be emergency evacuated much quicker and the mounted troops can easily fight from the top in a pinch (like Panzer Grenadiers in WW2). a great thing about the AT-OT is that its also basically mobile cover platform for a full platoon. all troops inside could shoot out of it from anywhere inside, meaning you cant be suppressed by focused fire on the exit points, something that cannot be said for the fully covered transports like the AT-TE

With Clone Trooper armor being protected against shrapnel, the biggest possible fear of the mounted infantry (mortars or airburst munitions) is negated. When you want to kill the infantry on top you have to use ordinance powerful enough to kill the tank, so the open top really doesn't matter that much

The AT OT is featured in a few empire at war mods, if I recall they even have a fan conversion that has a modular armored roof, the idea being when its being used for cargo or rear line transport that's removed but it could be bolted on when going into battle as basicly a larger APC counterpart to the AT TE which would carry less troops but with better armament like a modern day IFV

it seemed odd to me when i 1st saw it too. but cinsidering the troopers and stand up and fire from within the walker makes it basically a mobile pill box, while the other walkers only has the mounted weapons, this thing can have rifle, and rocket troopers and even flame troopers, it can walk in and set up as a gun wall in a town, blocking a road or city entrance as heavy defenses.

There is a reason, why today's military do not use open topped armored vehicles. You had open topped infantry carriers or tank destroyers in WWII, from which the AT-OT is probably inspired.
The main job of an armored transport vehicle is to bring the infantry safely to their designation and back.
An open top defeats this very purpose.
Open tops are vulnerable to small arms fire from elevated angles, from grenades, artillery, aircraft strafing runs and practically everything else on the battlefield. a single grenade can take out your whole infantry section in an open topped vehicle.
Yes, you gain some situational awareness, but pay a price for it. The trade off is not worth it.
They are obsolete today, and rightly so.

I've said this at nauseum but I seriously think the AT-OT is intended to be a cargo transport much like the HEMTT truck actively used by the US Army. Right down to the shape of the cabin and the amount of wheels/legs. These sort of trucks are intended to be used behind friendly lines and would never really be used in active battlefields. They could be outfitted with seats for troop carrying, keep the flatbed for cargo, and maybe possibly be outfitted with special equipment and weaponry. Imagine an AT-OT with an AV-7 gun mounted on the back, or an AT-OT with a shield generator on its back marching at the center of a walker formation providing a mobile shield for the convoy.
My guess for why Aayla's troopers were using an AT-OT in that area is that maybe they didn't have enough AT-TE's to carry all their troopers since ideally you wouldn't want to exhaust your troopers by walking on foot through the hostile ground of Felucia on their way to a heavily fortified enemy position, hence why some where even riding giant caterpillars too.
To sum it all up: AT-OT is a cargo truck first and foremost, NOT A TROOP TRANSPORT. It can **be** a troop transport in the same way that a Ford F-150 Pickup truck and be a school bus.

Hey guys just wanted to ask but would say an AT ST, equipped with twin rotary cannons be of any use? Vs the blaster cannons normally mounted onto them instead, allowing for a much higher rate of fire, since most enemies at the time would be civilians or converted civilian vehicles, the firepower of the armaments dont have to be that powerful

Open-topped troop carriers became obsolete deathtraps after airburst artillery shells were invented. If one of those detonates overhead, everyone in a large radius not under armored protection is going to get shredded. On the other hand, a fully-enclosed troop carrier is unlikely to be damaged. There's a good reason why all modern troop carriers in the real world are fully enclosed with armor.

    • @freedomefighterbrony9053

I honestly think a hybrid between the AT-TE and AT-OT would be awesome. The greater troop capacity of the OT, with the mass driver cannon of the TE, and maybe even a small command "deck" on the bottom(almost like a double decker bus, with the troops in the upper area and the command deck in the lower area). Although I 6 larger legs like the TE would be less of a hassle and look better than the 8 on the OT.

  • @Tabobricks
    @Tabobricks 9 месяцев назад

a good strategy would be: 2 AT-TE's 3 170 arc fighters to give cover and one AT-OT in the middle and the fighters would give cover from the top for good and safe troop transport

The AT-OT is still problematic for having an open top. Pointing out the ideal case doesn't detract from the fact that the open top leaves mounted troops more vulnerable than they need to be. There are a lot of different threats to infantry and armor, not merely air attack or dismounted troops with grenades. Artillery fire is the most lethal, especially in forested regions where they will often detonate on the trunks of trees (the infamous treebursts of Bastogne fame), showering the enemy with both steel shrapnel and splinters.
But, as far as supplies go, this vehicle is oversized. It can carry something like 30 troopers, which puts it in the same capacity as 5 to 10 ton trucks like the LMTV. However, those trucks are also shorter and can move quicker.

  • @mopar_dude9227
    @mopar_dude9227 Год назад

Being that it is a walker makes it inferior to any hover or wheeled (tracked) vehicles. In real life, any walker wouldn’t be able to ascend or descend any sort of hill or go over a descent size trench. They would only be good on a flat solid surface, and would get easily stuck in soft or muddy terrain. And there is no way that this walker could ever travel at 35mph, that just isn’t happening. And how long would it take to make a turn? And that goes for any walker in the Star Wars universe. The walkers were used in the movies because they looked cool and intimidating on the screen. But as far as a good design in real life, they fell way short. Small walkers, like the prototype ones used by US soldiers to carry gear, make sense to a point. But anything that is going to carry a dozen or more troops just won’t work.

  • @empoleon22

I think the AT-OT is brilliant and completely misunderstood. Open-air transports like this are incredibly useful in wartime. They're lighter since they don't have as much armor on top, and can actually fit more people/cargo inside of it because it can be stacked, or the soldiers can stand to allow more to pile in. What people forget is that open-air transports weren't used on the front line save for aquatic landings. They were mostly used to transport manpower and material around friendly controlled areas in a battlefield. You aren't as worried about snipers or artillery or enemy airpower in the places you control. So you use the vehicles that move the most cargo in the most efficient way possible. Once a battle starts, you wouldn't want your AT-OT to be doing anything. It isn't a tank meant to fight the enemy, it's a support vehicle.

I mean, open top did have their advantages. Sure, you'd get strafed, bombed, or jumped in by a psycho-sith and just slice everybody, but with danger also comes safety as you can easily hop out in the case of an aerial or bomb attack

Open transports are bad. You don't need aircraft to kill everyone inside, a grenade will do the job. There is simply no advantage to it being open top. Have a dura-steel cover, for grying out loud! At least a handgrenade will bouce off. You can still have gun slits on the sides for the infantery to fire outside.

  • @williammagoffin9324
    @williammagoffin9324 8 месяцев назад

You only have to turn on the news and see the footage of Russian troops riding on top of their APCs to understand there are advantages to not being under armor. Being open topped doesn't just mean you can get out faster but everyone inside can be looking outside for threats with a uninterrupted field of view. Also since its open when it takes a major hit the explosive force can go out of the vehicle and you don't have massive overpressure inside that kills everyone.
Everyone in the comments is talking about grenades, but they have advanced sensors and tractor beams in Star Wars. Easy to imagine a system that detects something being thrown in to the vehicle and smacks it away with a tractor beam or forcefield.
