You might also benefit from holding on to the vowels while singing, as in, “This is my reflection on your pooooooooond.” Versus “This is my reflection on your ponnnnnddddddd.” Emphasize the vowel. Excited to see you working on a new challenge.
I admire your efforts and can already hear a difference. I’m a crappy guitar player and crappy singer lol but I still uploaded s couple of songs on my channel over the years. Anyone who tells you not to sing can take a hike. Never stop trying to do better if it’s something you enjoy! ✌️❤️
The #1 thing that helped me was taking deeper breaths, I was running out of air, or it sounded that way. I hear the exact same thing in your vocals. I know its really dumbed down, try taking deeper breaths and maintain the tone and volume. That for me was 51 years ago, and today I still have to remind myself to do that!! Good luck Sean!! JMHO --gary
dig the song at the end man. I see you're using the trick with the A chord on the 5th fret where you leave the bottom two strings open (I learned this from one of your vids and use it all the time). Good stuff
This is exactly the type of singing video I needed. Thanks for looking out for us mediocre guys, Sean. 👌🏻🤣 Also you’re singing sounds great! Certainly gives me inspiration to continue practicing and working on my voice.
Having an actual instructor I found was vital. I've tried many online lessons, but as soon as I started the instructor picked up on multiple issues. Mainly not breathing deep enough (using diaphragm). I think your sound pretty good. Just lacking in confidence I'd say. Lean into it a little. more.
Thanks Sean. I didn't know about this course before this video. I am working on my singing as well and only recently accomplished the great feat of playing guitar and singing. I have found that in quieter settings I will drop key a whole step than I would if I were singing at full projection. I'm also finding I'm singing in the key of D and E most frequently, so the recent tips in the key of E has helped as well.
Great video, it’s funny to see that the devil is always in the detail. Cool to see how a teacher learns! Now we need Andrea’s feedback on your progress. Also all the new videos with you on the mic and her on the guitar 🤘🏼
My old singer used to give me pointers all the time. Simple stuff like "raise your eyebrows" "Use your inner smile" "Focus on the vowels, and think wide"
It's nice to hear you sing, man. I've always listened to your music on spotify (love Overcast!) and wondered why we didn't get to hear you as much on the channel.
I used to have about 200 songs on you tube once upon a time. I would record them and then very rarely listen to them. I thought my vocals were decent when I recorded. Then I got a comment (a friendly one) that pointed out that I was very flat a lot of the time. I thought "ridiculous" I never sing flat. I then went back to listen to a lot of my recordings. I was quite surprised at how bad my singing was. I no longer have any vids up on you tube. Sean, I love you brother, and I'm all for trying to improve. Right now, you're no singer. You're young enough to develop, so that's great, but keep the Seanettes close at hand. kevin O'Rourke
I’m the opposite singing is easier than playing the guitar. Doing both at the same time, is the trick I’ve yet to master. It’s probably because I suck at guitar and am only a decent singer? Anyway go forth and conquer! If Miley Cyrus can do it, so can you!
This is maybe too personal a critique for a stranger on youtube, BUT... it seems to me that when you are opening your mouth more and singing more forcefully, you sound more like your natural speaking tone and accent, but when you sing out less, it sounds kind of like you're doing an impression - like you've imagined a character doing the song, and you're reproducing that character's rendition of it, if that makes sense. The louder, bolder voice feels more natural and sincere to me. Anyway, I think it's working. Good job! :)
Im two weeks into taking vocal lessons in person, I’m 36 years old and it was terrifying to go to the first lesson. The amount of self awareness and learning about my body has been worth the investment in its own. We have a tendency to hide our voices and are reluctant to open up and let it out. Good on you for reflecting on opening your mouth more. Are you doing the straw breathing exercises?
Enjoyed this video. I've been working on improving my singing for a while now and it's so much more complicated than you'd think. I found out about the opening your mouth thing recently and it's crazy how much of a difference it actually makes. Love the new song!
What sucks is it seems that as a guitarist you're always expected to sing, or know how to. Hmm, yeah I'll work on this. For me just another thing to get in the way of my guitar playing.
The prescription is lots of karaoke. Not joking. Try lots of different songs and see which ones work best for your voice. Also you will gain confidence.
Sean I wonder have you looked into software singing programs that show you real time feedback of the pitch of your voice while your sing. So it shows you flat, sharp, in key etc then you can pitch you voice with feedback. Just sharing a thought I had for myself. My problem I live in home of professional singers, a son who has done six albums a cappella finishing twice number two in the world in HS. He sang all over the world, at the Garden, Royal Palace, etc. The other one sings blues, and opera. They both did that for fun and have real jobs. My son goes to the idea you floated about professionals still take lessons, which he does periodically. In the singing side I feel left out. So its me and the dogs as to who comes next in the home team. 😂 Your singing samples are within the circle of success. You going to be on top of this one way or another.
Hey Sean, I love your rock voice ,but that's when you stand straight, and really project ,and pull from your diaphragm, and really nail those notes love that sound
Thumbs up, Sean! Good job and thank you for making this video. You have a rich voice and with practice I don't see why you couldn't rival the likes of, for example, Cat Stevens. I say, go for it! Also, loved your song samples. Great lyrics and melodies. Also-also, I greatly enjoyed listening to you and Pasha (violinist) play together. A great combination. Rock on! Regards, Michael (a random person from the Internet). EDIT: Oh and the course sounds intriguing. I could certainly use the help. :)
There’s some RUclips videos by Improvise for Real called Singing with the Numbers. More about ear training than singing, but I found it helpful for singing too. Your voice is quite good especially when you put some emotions into it. Thanks for posting.
New song is great! (And I reckon you've developed as a singer already before this, but that it makes sense to work on voice technique, just like one would work on any other instrument. You learned a few new tricks here. Excellent stuff!) Tim Smith of Cardiacs believed that everyone's own voice had its own beauty, (that was how he put it in one of the stories I've heard, "Don't listen to them. You're beautiful enough." Or something with "beautiful" in it, because that was the word that felt right for this to him.) No need to reshape a voice to be "better" - which in a way is like saying, "like a better person's voice". It's good to train at singing, and less good to use the time to sound like Pavarotti, or whoever. To my ear, when he put this in practice it worked beautifully, and led to literally unique music. Maybe sometimes requiring acclimatization, but that's something we do all the time in other things, anyway. *The Sea Nymphs* project almost depends on the very authentic singing for its sound, and to me it's one of the loveliest things humans have made - largely because of what's "non-standard" in it - right down to "non-standard voices". Put negatively, the effort record labels have put into only recording "the best" has narrowed down our expectations/ willingness to hear different singing. They've accidentally standardized something that actually doesn't have precised "standards" a bit too much. *A Sea Ritual* is good example of that: ruclips.net/video/5NjQgbEduQQ/видео.html (but you need to really do all their music one day. Maybe. Should be a good mine, if nothing else.) I must go and see if I can find Sarah's Barnacle Tree. (I think it got removed from RUclips, though.)
It still exists! *Sarah Cutts* - *The Barnacle Tree* - ruclips.net/video/YZ5mFWQu0As/видео.html (The singer apparently was recently approved to exhibit art with the Royal Academy. Met someone once who knew about this kind of thing, and what it boils down to is recognition as being among the best visual artists in the UK. It's one of those things that's beyond the reach of most really good artists.) As far as The Barnacle Tree goes, I suppose it's a matter of taste, but to me it's lovely all in its own way. It hasn't "gone through the homogenizers" like so much does. It's real. But really real. Not the kind of "real" that's been invented to go with various slogans about being real that have been sold to us in batches in the last few years. And it's beautiful. And it's the confidence (just an appreciation of one's own worth, and asserting that as the fact it is) that makes it beautiful? "Here is my song, sung in my own voice, and it's beautiful." And it is.
I'd forgotten: Sarah sang a bit on *Fair Mary Mag* (if you've not seen this, at the end you get to find out what that baby was always dancing to). ruclips.net/video/kanAr4xIlpA/видео.html
I’ve been down this road, and although it seems to help, these courses are utter bs. I can’t believe I’ve become that guy, but I was here too. It does get you to explore more but the foundations aren’t there. It took me 3 years with a bel canto coach to finally realise this.
Its not really once u get over the awkward part and build confidence its like practicing any other instrument. Make sure to sing from the stomach u can even get a good workout from it lol
This is why Sean is the RUclips GOAT. He doesn’t shy away from teaching us scary stuff like music theory, piano and singing that we really need to learn if we want to progress. He teaches us about drums to, but nobody is scared of drums.
I hear a little Billy Corgan in your voice with not as much nasal sound. Bringing up Corgan, he wrote music that worked with his voice...He didn't try and hide from who he was and it worked beautifully for him. Improving is good and staying true to who you are is the key.... the key of G....the peoples key.
Singing tip from a non-singer: Use what's known as open vowels rather than "modified" vowels. In other words, pronounce words when singing the way they're pronounced while speaking. So "baby" should sound like "bay-bee" not "bay-buh". No more handed-down affectations! (this is directed at my radio, not sean, by the way...)
Hey Sean, jimmy Kimball was trying to steel your thunder ,he did skit where he needed to help Hallmark with new ideas ,you can stream it on utube😎 you should have agent send them a resume ,hours of onscreen work, sound engineering, and some demos of original music!! Face it you can do drama, lol😁
I mean this in the nicest possible way, that song was shit bruv. I was expecting you to knock the granny out of it, which normally, you do. I have to say that like the tyre on my chopper, I'm let down. How could you do this to me?😛 Merry Christmas from the UK.
Hey Sean Why don’t Americans know the difference between regimen and regiment? Pisses me off and turns me off the instructor. Not you. I enjoy your little idiosyncrasies!
This video is helpful for beginner singers like myself and our friend through video, Sean. This course is something I will consider and something I didn't know about before. The video has accomplished it's goal. With continued practice and instruction, I am sure Sean and myself will improve our vocal prowess. Perhaps, one day we will both be accomplished enough to win your favor.
You might also benefit from holding on to the vowels while singing, as in, “This is my reflection on your pooooooooond.” Versus “This is my reflection on your ponnnnnddddddd.” Emphasize the vowel. Excited to see you working on a new challenge.

Good to see you learning and telling us the experience.
Super impressive and very talented vocalist and artist. Much love, thank you for this offering!
It definitely helps when you can play guitar in basically auto pilot so you can focus more on singing.

dig the song at the end man. I see you're using the trick with the A chord on the 5th fret where you leave the bottom two strings open (I learned this from one of your vids and use it all the time). Good stuff
Admire your effort. Your songs could use more variety of pitch in their melodies to make them more musically engaging.
Very sphincter relaxing.
Informative.

Great video! I was really invested in the tale of the singer who didn't open his mouth.
Hey Sean - Your voice is coming over great - Could you tell me what busking amp your using? It sounds crystal clear.

Really...? I've a deep voice...and kinda awkward😅. I would love to sing well...
Really! 👍🤠
WOW THAT OVER EMPHASIZING AND THE OPENING OF THE MOUTH IS WHAT I'M GOING THROUGH AND THE TH SOUND ALSO THE W SOUND AS IN 'WITH'

That is a beautiful song Sean. Everything about it was perfect.
Wow...that is now on my "must learn to play" list.
What vocal effects do you use? I'm trying the T C Helicon Duplicator now.
Enjoyed this video. I've been working on improving my singing for a while now and it's so much more complicated than you'd think. I found out about the opening your mouth thing recently and it's crazy how much of a difference it actually makes. Love the new song!

I can barely sing in the shower. I always thought you were already a good singer but the course did seem to bring you to a higher level.
Thanks Joe!
