I was at this match, stood right behind the goal for Shearer's header. Little did I know that 10 years later, I would meet my wife, in New York, who just happened to be Turkish, and now have lived in Turkey for 17 years! Life is weird!

Looking back at some of these clips, reminds you that Taylor did get them playing some great attacking football at times. Even a post-knee operation Gazza is still magic, and has more pace than people made out at the time. It’s just a shame that the likes of Waddle and Beardsley weren’t selected for squads at times when we needed to keep the ball better. A lot of good defenders got overlooked too, at a time when the foreign players hadn’t swamped us as much. He had plenty of options. You can’t argue with some of the attacking play, but jeez it was stressful to watch the games against quality teams.
One of the only times during the qualification for the 94 World Cup we were able to put out our strongest side and we looked good. Taylor did himself no favours though by jettison the likes of Waddle and Beardsley and playing the likes of Palmer, Geoff Thomas, Sinton and so many others. Did he even give Le Tissier a cap?
If the core of this team had stayed fit and Taylor wasn’t so inept at choosing replacements when injuries hit, we’d have qualified for the 94 World Cup and probably done alright. Shearer, Gazza, Wright, should have had Le Tiss in there too. Taylor really fucked this era up
Pickaxe III What constitutes 'do alright' though? I believe England would have struggled in the '94 World Cup if they did qualify. Graham Taylor was poor for England, but the squad wasn't particularly great then. The minute they came up against a good team they would have been well beaten. Look at teams like Italy, Brazil, Holland etc - Baggio, Maldini, Romario, Bebeto, Bergkamp. England were way below that level. Gazza was always badly overweight during Taylor's reign, he was a disgrace tbh. I like Ian Wright, but he was very raw when he first came into the England squad - until Taylor's last game against San Marino, Wright had scored 1 in 14 for England. Le Tissier would never have excelled in international football - Venables and Hoddle barely gave him a sniff either. He was had a great football brain, but he was also lazy and too immobile. I really don't subscribe to the 'what if' theory of the '94 World Cup, England were nowhere near as good as the better teams in that competition. Not having English teams play in Europe from the mid 80's until '91 really set English football back. The whole culture, not just that of Taylor, was too long ball. The club sides were miles behind the top Italian teams like Milan, until United got used to the Champion's League in the mid 90's. Reaching the semi in '90 was really an anomaly for England - they lost every game at Euro '88 and were poor at Euro '92. Lineker himself said that England's squad was much poorer after '90 when Beardsley and Waddle were no longer there and Barnes had his serious injury.
On the bright side though, I thought they had a good spirit in the team and actually played like one. I thought they were very unlucky to not qualify for USA 94, in what was a difficult group. Qualifying now is a doddle, it is not even worth watching the games.
kebabtank I agree that team spirit and desire wan't the problem - they were a patriotic squad and after watching the documentary I think they also liked Taylor on the whole, respected him as a person and wanted to do well for him. Like I said in my comment before, my view is that the whole tactical culture of English football at the time had fallen behind, and there was an absence of match winners available. One thing that speaks volumes to me is the goal England scored against Germany in '93 in America - it was a good passing move and in the commentary Ron Atkinson immediately says it's the best goal scored under Taylor's reign. This sums up for me that there just hadn't been much flowing progressive football played under Taylor.
8-0 lık hezimetlerden sonra Türk futbolunun yavaş yavaş kendisini toparlamaya başladığı yıllar. En azından sahada bi mücadele vardı büyük kalite farkı olmasına karşın bizimkiler elinden gelen her şeyi yapmış.
:) Was that Hakan Sukur? One would have expected him, if anyone, to put it away! When the follow up strikes the bar, Turkey probably realised they might have missed their best chance of the match.
MNAYMEN A fucking moron Gazza is... If you wanna shake hands, then at least have the decency and the respect to look at the opponent in the eye. Nobody has to shake your hand, fucker.

Was that Carlton Palmer? Ha ha, I remember him as an England regular under Taylor along with Geoff Thomas. Seems kind of crazy now, but each manager seemed to have their favourites.. Terry Vegetables used to always pick Terry Fuckwitt and Hoddle always picked Anderton. They had a few god games but they put them in regardless of form or fitness.
Alan Shearer (perhaps with Paul Ince) is the best thing that happened to this national team in the transitional period of '90s towards a rather indifferent squad later on. A pity for all of us, numerous admirers all over the world for the exceptional teams of Bobby Robson, with such great personalities and so much talent
Graham Taylor Laurie MAC days Well they picked all the best players for this game. But with all this talent available how could you miss out on qualifying. Unless he wanted me o play Calvin Palmer and the Crystal Palace guy intead who remembers what Graham did wrong

I was there. Wont forget Shearer's diving header. Had a good view behind the goal.
Honestly, I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was 10 years old. Almost 30 years ago ffs 😂
Superb fourth goal, the Turkish defence was opened up by the way Des Walker controlled the ball on the run.
Yes, he took it brilliantly in his stride.
The only time I've been happy to see Engaland win !!
