- Matthew McConaughey's cry of "alright, alright, alright" was a big hit at the 86th Academy Awards last night when he uttered it after winning the best actor award for Dallas Buyers Club.
"Alright, alright, alright" isn't new, though. McConaughey's been rocking that catchphrase since portraying the David Wooderson character in the coming of age film Dazed And Confused in 1993.
In a 2011 interview, McConaughey told George about the origin of the saying - and explained its unlikely connection to Doors' singer Jim Morrison.

I had a professor in my Sophomore year of college who was obsessed with him and impressively was able to somehow include him in almost all of our lessons. She called him Matthew McConahottie.

I grew up a huge fan of Jim Morrison and after watching this I am a fan of Matthew McConaughey.
Matthew McConaughey just seems like one of those people who you KNOW is not fake in any way shape or form. And there is a REASON I said "people" and NOT "actor". Because he doesn't ACT in his movies. He is so good that the characters he portrays in movies and on TV are a PART of him. He does not have a public face and a private one. Matthew is Matthew take it or leave it !!!

I was literally just listening to some live doors stuff, specifically the Miami 1969 concert, and I had the thought that Matthew McConaughey’s iconic quote sounded very similar to Jim. That got me on the idea of just looking up a clip of him saying it and saw this vid explaining that the line was totally inspired by him.

The only reason people think they were a one hit wonder is because they only hear that one fucking song over and over and over again and think that's all they did!

Actually I grew up in Texas at the tale end of the 70's and 80's. While his acting of that character is BEYOND spot on perfect I'm positive I've heard someone there very similar to his character say that line.
My mom actually was 21 in Texas in 1976 (the setting of the movie) and I made her sit down and watch DAC with me and she said every single actor, scene and setting were absolutely perfect which was my recollection as well and the exact reason we watched the show that night. She and I both felt the only person who seemed totally wrong for the date and time was Parker Posey's character. I informed her that having grown up in the Alt/Goth subculture that she would have been perfect for a role depicting that one overbearing Goth or Rockabillie chick who is loud for attention and because she, mistakenly, believes it distracts from her less than perfect features. Which, ironically, it actually serves to highlight and annoy. 9/10 if that same chick would just calm down and STFU she would probably be more attractive rather than less. Regardless, if you've ever been to a Goth or Rockabillie club there is ALWAYS at least one of those exact chicks present

To be specific, it's from The Doors "In Concert" double album and Morrison quite clearly says the line to the live crowd...and Morrison speaks it in the exact same way as McConaughey. I remember the line without even listening to the album again and, if McConaughey is a fan, he would too.
