So I’m just going to talk about the 8 speed. The 8L90 was intended as a replacement for the 6L90. With GM, the last two numbers are the torque/usage rating for their transmissions. The higher that number the better the transmission is built for usage and power. So most 1500 and smaller trucks get the *80 rating on transmissions. However there is no 8L80. They make an 8L45 but it’s in cars and maybe the Colorado. So for whatever reason when GM built the 8L90 they first installed it into the 2015 Silverado/Sierra 1500s with the 6.2 V8. And then the very next model year they put it with any engine in an LTZ trim or higher.
It was not a good result. They legit had some early torque converter issues and then they have always been plagued with a pretty rough 1-2 shift (a lot of 6L90s have this too). So it got a lot of complaints and it had a lot of warranty issues, mostly complaints with the 1-2 shift. Now I have noway of proving this but it’s my opinion this lead GM to scrapping the transmission for the HDs and continuing on with the 6L90 which for awhile was their least warrantied transmission.
So technically, the 8L90 is rated to handle more power than the 6L90 and also the 10L80 10 speed which is what comes in the 1500 trucks. Now obviously GM has stuck it out with the 8L90 and the one I had was fine, but it has a terrible reputation that came about in part because it was designed for the HD trucks.
Nice video. Just a little backstory on the 8L90. In summary it’s a stronger built transmission than the 10L80 and the 6L90.
Thanks for the info. I had an the 6L80 with the 4.3 and it was perfect for the I30,000 I had it. It was a bit clucky. Now with the 2.7 and 8 speed is way smoother. Usually the first shift of the day 1st to second is a lil rough but whatever it's a truck. I honestly think more people that previously drove cars are buying trucks and are complaining cause they never drove an old clucky truck. They're paying a lot of money too so I'm sure that figures into it.
Mine is great. 21k miles now, LT. Great gas mileage and I do a little off-roading. Nothing crazy, mud and dirt, no rocks. Holds up, it’s got giddy up and it looks great.
Thanks for the RPM test great video👍
I would like to hear from 2.7 owners who have put a lot of miles on their trucks and any problems. Thanks
I have 2.7s and so far with about 12,000 miles on them no problems at all and they are really quick.
I have a 2022 1500 put 19k miles on mine in 10 months. I have towed about 4K behind it And got 14.5mpg. Same trailer behind my gas guzzling 2020 6.6 2500 only got 10.5 for same trip.
Love mine, nearly 27k miles. Tow pretty heavy too. Perfect engine. I've got a few videos.
30k, just oil changes, tow a boat, love it.
Coming up on 20kn mine and it’s been lifted with true 33” rt tires zero complaints no issues thus far.
Towed my home gym from El Paso tx to great falls MT little over 5500lbs roughly is what the weight ticket said for the trailer. Then another 600 in the bed and cab. Got up in Wyoming and hit a massive blizzard so the last roughly 1000 miles I towed that trailer in 4wd high at about 30mph… slow but made it zero issues
I’m a master auto diesel tech day to day and chose between the 2.7 and 3.0 engines because the 5.3 and 6.2 have so many lifter issues. I’ve probably replaced 1000s of lifters n the 19-23s thus far if I had to guess so it scared me away from the v8 options
I own a '22 2.7 turbo. You're right about staying out of the turbo and only use the turbo for merging onto the freeway. I get 20.5+ on country roads and 22 to 24 highway. The low RPM at cruising speed was another selling point. I like the simplicity of the four cylinder rather than the V6 with twin turbos and two banks of cylinders. This truck suits my use but will it be reliable?
I love my 2021 2.7 LT 4x4!
1972 lbs of payload and 9100lbs of towing is way more than I need. Stock it got 27mpg on a 100mile loop in about 1700ft of elevation then after a 3.5” lift and 33 kenda klever rt tires still got 23mpg highway on the same 100mile loop hand calculated at the same pump both times.
Zero complaints with my 2.7 thus far knock on wood
Wow, those tires are LOUD! Are we to believe manufacturers can't get their dash displayed fuel mileage calculations accurate yet somehow it always displays better MPG than actual? Thanks for the great and realistic reviews.
Not always my truck is under Chevy 2500. Hand calculated multiple times too
I bought 2023 crew cab 4x4 with the 2.7 I was extremely hesitant and concerned BUT I have to say I’m so pleased with it I can’t say it enough it in my Opinion out performs the 5.3 hands down in every way I’ve owned 5.3’s since 1999 and traded every two to three years so I’ve owned plenty of them I Would absolutely Suggest the 2.7 over the 5.3 Hands Down.On the Highway at 77/78 mph i average 28/29 mpg running 93 octane and I live in western Pennsylvania so we are constantly climbing hills and mountains if you don’t goose it and let it do it’s thing being mindful I think the gas mileage is Excellent
It would be nice if you created a spreadsheet of the mpg/acceleration and what truck it was that is publicly viewable, and link it in the description for easy access and quick reference for anyone buying a truck.
60,000 on mine and the 2.7T is the best part of the truck!
Just switching my 14 5.3l to all-terrain tires from highway tires dropped my fuel economy 2-3 mpg on average. I was really surprised at how much of a difference it made.
I have a 2024, can't get better than 17mpg
I drive a 2018 F150. After living with a turbo charged truck. I won't go back to a N/A V8. The N/A V8 leaves to much efficiency and fuel economy on the table. I can get 24 MPG@68 MPG. On two lane roads where the speed limit is 55 I can get 29. Yep, my supercrew 4x4 2.7L ecoboost gets 29 mpg@55 MPG. You couldn't give a N/A V8 powered truck. Now there is a down side.
When I hook up to a trailer, that 400 ft-pounds of torque at 2750 RPM's will burn gas like its kool. I live on the coast so I don't have to pull trailers in the mountains. That being said at 65mph I'm getting around 14 MPG with a loaded trailer.
Anyway, If I were a chevy guy, the only motor I would even look at is the 2.7L turbo4. When its time to go to work I don't trip on cylinder count. 430 ft-feet of torque can haul the mail for sure, with good fuel economy to boot.
I purchased a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado LT 2.7LT Turbo. I did change out my factory air cleaner for the K&N Air Filter and according to the factory mpg gauge. So far the best MPG I have gotten is 30.6mpg for 50 miles. I will have to check on towing. Approaching 7,500 miles.
10:17 my 2023 has the digital dash as an LT? I would have thought the Trail Boss would have an elevated dash? I just cleared 1000 miles and sitting at 19.8 mpg. Great review!
Its Custom Trail boss. Lower trim they didn't do the upgraded interior.
2023 GMC CANYON DENALI !!!!
Would be interesting to see it also
This engine is very HI-TECH you almost have to forget it is a 4cyl. Per old way of thinking it is putting out a lot of power. Because it is turbo charged you are somewhat limited on fuel economy. Considering Everything i.e. horsepower torque turbo I think the fuel economy is very good. You really can't argue with phsyics.
I got a 15.1 @87mph in my ‘22 rally edition!
With most of the torque at 1500 rpm there is no need to always keep you foot in it. Should see between 17 to 21 mpg in my real world owning this engine.
I hit 60 in 7.1 seconds in my 2022 2.7l custom.
Man put the 4,3 in it with a turbo and have a good day.😊
Turn off the AC when doing the 0-60 tests?
Do the max tow !!
Does the ac shut off with the stary stop? If so can we turn the start stop off?
2.7 is quick.i take the 3.0 duramax
Well I think I'll keep a 8 cylinders and 18 mpg instead of 18 on a 4 banger. I like that other 4 cylinders for get up and go
Good video and going to watch the trailer pulling one with 4 cylinders. Good luck hope it get 10 in them Rocky mountains
I’m considering a baby duramax and the 2.7
What should I get? I do t tow I had an 185.3 which I sold because of Joe Biden and gas prices
What color is that?
Good video Tyrome
My 2019 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi averages around 17.5mpg....
I can definitely hear the tires… way to loud!!
Great vid......the reason there pushing the EV is because of politics.
16 kinda sucks. I get a average of 19-20 with my 5.3
I get 20 to 21 on my 2.7 which for me is fine its a truck
That oil pressure sucks at 30 psi at 2000 rpms
I would not put Costco gas in my new Silverado
Umm... Costco's gas is TopTier rated, it's the highest quality gasoline you can buy.
@@kylemj13 not where I'm from
A Honda civic engine doesn't belong in a full size truck.. I have a 13 ram 5.7 hemi no turbo needed... I get 23 highway and 20 mix pretty much consecutive... need to keep the turbo lit just to get down the road
Not true. We are all very impressed with your engine but this “civic” engine makes more torque and at lower RPMs than your V8. It also sips gas. I drive a 5.7 for work, thing drinks fuel… but again. You’re so cool.
