It is really cathartic to hear Tommy and Ben humanize Palestinians. The footage of Shaban burning alive, and of the little boy consoling his wailing younger brother are also ones that have been seared into my heart. Also seared are the statements of Gallant, Netanyahu, Herzog on how they would annhilate Gaza. If media coverage were honest in the US, more Americans would understand why the first two are under indictment for genocide.

Israel is really at the end of the “…living long enough to see yourself become the villain” character arc. A country founded from the ashes of the Shoah (which, regardless of what Israel says, is the historic truth) is now committing some of same crimes against their neighbors. It is both horrific and shameful to watch.

      - Hamas for starting the war on October 7th
      - The parents that voted for Hamas in 2006
      - The 2nd Intifada of Hamas terrorist bombings that created the wall (the "open air prison" and the "apartheid terrotory" for a people that state they are the enemy of Israel)
      - The polling that shows your average Palestinian by a large majority wants 9 million Israelis to not exist
      - UNWRA schoolbooks talking about killing Jews in elementary math
      - UNWRA funding 400 MILES of terror tunnels (their largest 19 year public works project)
      - A lack of water infrastructure because Hamas used it to build weapons
      - Hamas operating out of hospitals
      - The US for funding Hamas via the UN and directly
      - The EU for funding Hamas via the UN and directly
      - Trump for ending the Iranian nuclear deal
      - Biden for returning $10 billion in funding to Iran
      - IRGC
      - Hezbollah
      - The Houthis
      - The Muslim Brotherhood Islamist extremists
      - Also why just blame Bibi? Smotrich and Ben Gvir are WAY WORSE.
This problem comes down to Palestinians wanting a Palestine "from the river to the sea". If they could just negotiate a neighborly coexistence with Israel they wouldn't have a war. And to do that, you need to get rid of the extremists that run both territories. Should Israel get rid of them? Ideally not. Palestinians should get rid of them. You can't have peace with hatred for Israel. And it took a lot for Smotrich and Ben Gvir to gain power. They would easily be voted out if there was a path to peace. They have long been seen as dangerous to Israel. The only use they have is in wartime as a vicious decision makers against vicious enemies.

Selectively looking at individual, horrific occurrences in Gaza does nothing to address the issue. You literally said "If someone did this to me I would hate you," referring to Palestinian victims. Well guess what? It WAS done to the Jews. And they are feeling and are responding exactly as you suggested you would feel. Both sides have legitimate grievances. Both sides can point to unthinkable atrocities to justify violence and retaliation. Both sides are acting in accordance with their interests and objectives. Putting all of the responsibility to end the conflict on only one side is nonsensical and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the issue. The only way to even begin to meaningful opinion on this issue is to consider the ultimate objectives of each side. The Jews have clearly demonstrated that their ultimate goal is to live peacefully with their Arab neighbors. They have succeeded in that goal with many of them. They say it over and over. The goal of Hamas is to eliminate the state of Israel and establish some sort of caliphate. Both of those goals are legitimate for those who aim for them. But for us spectators understanding those big picture objectives is much more important than wringing our hands over suffering Palestinian children. That suffering breaks all of our hearts. And we have to look at it in the bigger context. It's so much more complex than 'people who drop bombs are bad.'

    • @jmhorange
      @jmhorange 10 дней назад +1

Israelis and Palestinians might have legitimate grievances. But the Israelis have a government. The Palestinians have Hamas, a terrorist group, and the weak Palestinian Authority, which is basically an Israeli puppet and has done nothing to stop illegal Israel settlements. Israeli left Hamas in power for 16 years, they funneled money to Hamas, they supported Hamas. When Israel says it had a ceasefire with Hamas on Oct 6th, think about what Israel is saying. They were happy to make peace with a terrorist group who calls for the destruction of Israel...
This is nonsense, the point of a government is to prevent violence, it's why we have them. Without a government, people will resort to violence, terrorist groups and organized crime. Israel is acting like it doesn't even have a government, the Israeli government is behaving just like Hamas, a terrorist group. The Israeli government needs to step up, and achieve peace, the purpose of any government in history. Why is the Israeli government so focused on making sure Palestinians do not have a government of their own? What do they think is going to happen, that Palestinians will eventually give up and abandon violence? There has been no group of humans who have done that without an actual government. The Israelis have a government, the Palestinians do not.

Hamas effectively rules Palestine, it is the government. If Isreali government has achieved peace for 16 years by funding it, it proves that it did achieve peace, even if only by appeasement, which always fails at some point. Hamas, terrorist group/gov, achieved peace by taking the funding, but rather than spending it on infrastructure, invested in weapons & ended the peace with an act of war. Netanyahu, having tried peace via payment (as you describe), will doubtless achieve peace- after a lot of horrific violence.

People do make the argument (Bill Maher, who is a half-smart, sarcastic prick, and Scott Galloway, who is actually smart and fairly sincere), that Israeli bombing of civilians in Gaza is comparable to the allied bombing of German cities in World War II. Galloway argues that the Israeli bombing is less indiscriminate than for example the fire bombing of Dresden.
Of course this historical relativism is pretty simplistic and facile. We could argue for days about whether a supposed Nazi sympathy in the general population was defeated by killing tens of thousands, just as you guys properly point out that killing Palestinian civilians does not create understanding for the Israeli position.
I do not believe that Palestinian victimhood automatically endows the Palestinian cause with some kind of nobility. I am not a kefiyah kid. From the river to the sea exists not just as a slogan, but also as a program. The problem is that when we take one side or another in this conflict - instead of our own serious demand for a peaceful solution - we tend to support one side by piling up the many wrongs of the other side and claiming that they override or justify the wrongs of our side. But this conflict has degenerated into a conflict between extremes: Hamas/Hesbollah and Netanyahu/Smotrich/Ben Gvir.
As Americans we need (like Ben and Tommy) to pUsh for our own ideas of a peace based on adherence to international law.

No one is saying that Palestinians are “morally right” and “Israel is wrong”or that “Hamas/Hezbollah” are right and “Netanyahu/Ben Gvir/Smotrich are wrong”. Saying that “suffering doesn’t give you moral authority” is a line that you stole from Ta-Nehisi Coates to argue against a claim no one is making.
This is a war of extremes but the extremes are not “Hamas” or “Netanyahu” - they are both on the same side of the extremes. The real extremes are “human rights and rule of law” vs “apartheid and genocide”. You shouldn’t need to be a “keffiyah kid” to know which of those is morally right and which deserve our condemnation.

    • @TPaine76

Bill Maher may be “half smart” but he’s fully an asshole. Scott Galloway is overrated.
This is not comparable to Dresden or any battle in any other war in recent history with the exception of Nanking or maybe an isolated incident where some US military commander went psycho on a village in Vietnam.
Palestinian civilians were not killed as “collateral damage” in the targeting of some other group. The “we just want to destroy Hamas” line that Israel feeds people was always a myth - just like “the tunnels” underneath Shifa hospital. Israel has never been particularly concerned about distinguishing civilians from militants. All Palestinians are the same to Netanyahu. So even if it's true Hamas and Hezbollah use human shields, you'd think Israel would try to limit civilian deaths to avoid the world blaming Israel and harming their diplomatic ties, or at the very least, anticipate that the world would blame Israel and insulate their society from this criticism. The surprising thing is Israel seems completely caught off guard that world opinion of Israel has dropped significantly since civilians deaths have continued to rise in Gaza.

The casualness that these two, very good dudes, are talking about a state sponsored terrorism, shows how successful the boiling frog strategy is.
To be clear, these guys are talking about Israel engaging in strategy that is literal Nazism, terrorism, etc.
Israel is a terrorist state at this point. The government and if we are honest, many of its people, are either terrorists or sympathizers of terrorism. We are just not materially different from a nation like Iran on the very specific subject of our support for Israel and what we will allow.
That is deeply disturbing and I feel like some wacko, conspiracy theorist, but objectively, we are knowingly supporting terrorism on a level that is so far beyond isis, Al queida or any terrorist groups. And the tactics are equally brutal. Starvation is far more brutal than a gun shot.
Again, if you are objective and simply view this on paper as a non US citizen, I don’t know how you come to different conclusions.
And once my party does that, I can no longer vote for them. And yes, I realize the other guys are worse, but I also believe continuation of my support, for the party that is responsible for this, creates a moral hazard that will last many decades and the consequences will be more dire. Granted, it will get real bad under Trump, but we made this bed.

Obviously Bibi ( i think less so, they should have given the guy immunity so he had more room to ignore his coalition partners)and his rightwing coalition partners ( obviously more so) don’t want a ceasefire but there are still people in both the government, military, security services and opposition who do. Seemingly nobody in Gaza is able to force a ceasefire upon Sinwar nor are the Arab states ( his sponsors) really serious about lessening the suffering of the Palestinian population. Regarding the categorization of the FDP in Germany, it’s not entirely accurate to refer to this party as ‘Libertarian’ nor as ‘Liberal’ in the US-sense. FDP is referred to as the ‘Liberals’ in Germany/EU with more of a sense of what might be referred to as Classical Liberalism: market-fundamentalist oriented Liberalism capital L. This at least in western continental Europe, including, say France, is commonly the usage of the word Liberal and perhaps has a usage corollary in the way that ‘Neo-Liberal’ is used in contemporary US… i often heard the French speaking of « an excess of liberalism », in this manner… thusly in some sense aligned with deregulating markets, including say the market of same-sex/same-gender marriage. But a classical Liberal, to some degree, also has an eye on the status quo, even if reformed, insofar as it has characteristics of preserving market operability, whereas a Libertarian perhaps has more radical stances of anti-clericalism, anti-statism, anti-governance to the point of wanting total overhaul of status quo preserving systems. Think, perhaps, as a literary analogy: Diderot versus De Sade. Neither are fond of the Church, but Diderot perhaps would allow for the cultural institution while wishing to reform its influence over the state, whilst De Sade wants cannibalism for example to also be legal and unregulated. Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic party is more of the ‘left-half’ of the US Democratic party à la Bernie and AOC, with roots in labor representation, etc.
