The market is crazy. The 1961 D Jefferson on the left, steps looks like just a few steps shown, $13,000!!!!? wow, if that's the case, I should get all 30 of my coins graded.
I recently started metal detecting and found one of these in my own yard. Best coin I’ve found yet. Thanks for the info. I have the rounded steps of course lol
I have a big pretzel jar of nickels from the 1930's to this date. Having seen this video makes me want to search through it when I return from vacation. Thanks for adding to the coin world of knowledge.
I found one! Now what? 😅 I just like finding and collecting coins I never know who to take them to. NGC is closer but I hear PCGS does better at auctions and I read about CAC stickers and how they double check quality but the system confuses me. Yeeeears ago a good friend of mine taught me about collecting with a wheat penny and ever since I've held the hobby dear. Thank you blue ridge for educating!!
I made a comment about nickles with full steps, yesterday when I answered the question for the Morgan silver dollar, give away. And lo and behold, you made this video today, I see 2 steps on the coin on the left, and I get the "curve", your talking about. I am glad about that curve, because I see graded nickles with full steps and I have seen them with only a few. You picked the best pair, for comparison. Good job my man, I'm going to go thru my nickles today. Thanks for the good information. The old guy in Florida 😎😃
Conrad Pons I have wondered the same thing. I actually took a screenshot of BlueRidge’s side by side in the video, so I could zoom in and get a closer look. I too see only about 2 steps on this “full steps” coin. But I guess when you compare it to the other one that is totally mushy, and knowing the typical quality of the period, I can see how they could grade on a curve. I think I would be more hesitant to get anything graded though, knowing there is no true black & white rule. Or...maybe it plays to our favor? Not sure.🤔
Wow!!! I have to say thank you for what you put out to everyone. The research and discriptsion of such is Great. Love the pre-strike planchet information.
So I just found one of these literally 20 minutes ago and it is in incredible condition. I had to check it 3 times because I thought there's no way this coin is 60+ years old and still in nearly pristine condition. And it appears to have distinguishable steps on the inverse. Of course with my good luck there'll be something wrong with it and it'll be worth 4 cents.
Hello BlueRidge . Wow I can't believe that the full step makes that much different , like you said the other coin looks better . Now I have to look little more closely thanks for the great video 👍🏽🌵
Thank you so VERY MUCH FOR POINTING OUT THE NICKEL STEPS. SHAUN...I DO GET A BIT CONFUSED BECAUSE I SEE SOME C-APPY ONE'S GETTING BIG DOLLAR'S ? In my 1961 hard plastic sealed original mint holder has a black beauty cameo full clear 7 steps all the way across Monticello. The E in Liberty is missing the middle E line and is a spotless mirror like no "S" proof nickle. Thank you for the video.
I have a 1939D that I put away , it has a ding nut the steps are full other than that ding and I thought it wouldn’t grade that way with it. Very good info to hear. I appreciate it. It may be valuable after all. I love your videos. U never know what coins you have with out U BRSH. Thankyou. Made my Evening . 20 yrs ago I recieved it in change. So it is circulated but definitely AU - 58 to MS -61
Excellent video! No lie: I just picked a 1964-D AND a 1961-D in a single roll I talked the lady at the gas station to sell me during halftime of the AFC Playoff game today. They are both heavily circulated unsurprisingly (not a bank roll). Plus the '61 has the wildest mint error I've ever seen with an incuse ring around the whole coin and added material (looks like wire) over the top in one spot. The mint mark is also bisected by the odd ring. I'm a Buffalo Nickel guy, so I've seen some wild stuff, but just head scratching. I've gotta find your contact info so I can send you some pics! Needless to say I'm headed back to the gas station at OOB.
Hello thanks for your help & info. I have a 1961 D nickel but you can't see the steps and is in ok/decent condition. Anyway I can send a photo? Also have 1) 1939 - 3) 1940 1) 1940 S - 4) 1941 1) 1941 D 1) 1941 S - along with some 46' 47' 48' 49' 54' 58' 59' & 1961 D - 1962 D -1964's along with a few before the 80's
I found a 1961 no mint mark nickel..its a gem..shiny beatiful strike..and 5 steps on one side and 2 on other..I'm getting it graded..Did I hit the jackpot??
I have been looking through these rolls of nickels I have and I’ve found a 1961 D Jefferson nickel and the obverse face has been struck 3 times. I can see it around the Jefferson head. And on the reverse the building is doubled or struck 3 times also
I been following you for a while now and I like watching your video as well as coinhelp-U I like how your straight forward with the coin that your talking about and trying to educate your followers about coin collecting. I recently started coin hunting and collecting as well and I have some Jefferson Nickel that I think looks good and with FS but I have no experience with how to send it for grading and like you said we have to train our eyes with the coin detail luster and the eye appeal and I already gotten a microscope too and i think it's good coin but I'm just scared I guess because I dont know how to send a coin.😅
I forgot to mention...I have two 1961s and one 1963 in about MS66 or better...and two of them have Full Steps...just haven't been able to send them in yet...
I have a 1976 DDR Dime and I just emailed pictures to you yesterday so I am not expecting to hear back for a while but it was a coin I found in my change and I’ve never seen one like it anywhere. I’ve never had a coin graded and I’m nervous about sending it somewhere. Im new to coin roll hunting and the find was unexpected. It is definitely DDR and not die deterioration. I was happy about finding it but again I’m nervous about sending it somewhere and kind of confused about the process as well. I wish there was a way to get it graded in person. Im in Maryland. I don’t know of any reputable graders or even where to start really.
I just found 2- 1961 nickles in my collection...but the one that looks like it has full steps/full strike does NOT have a mint mark on it ? Does that make it more valuable?
Shaun yesterday I got box of unecerc rolls of 2019 d nickels. 1 coin stand out of all because of the color. Is it possible there’s a black beauty in a modern coin?
Love watching your videos, very informative. This question is not related to this video but I trust your answers. Are they a way to clean dirty coins that doesn’t interfere with it value.I am not a big time collector I just want to put up some coins for my grandchildren.I don’t know where to look to ask questions and receive answer. If you have time to answer Thank You in advance.
As a general rule, collectors should never attempt to clean their coins..... never! If you were to come across a nice specimen, but felt a burning desire to spiff it up a little by means of a chemical bath, or even lightly padding the coin with the softest rag you could find....then send it off to a 3rd party grader for authentication and grading......they will know immediately while examining under high magnification. Chemicals will alter the original color and luster of the coin, and even the softest of rags will create friction on the surfaces of the coin, which will cause microscopic scratches. Most of the grading services do offer conservation services for an additional fee if the coin warrants it. :-)
Amanda have you found out anything about the coin you have yet ? I have a 1961 nickle without the mint mark as well, thats why lm watchin this video to see if it was special due to not showing where it was minted.
Good video i just don't understand about the Nicks on the planchet you said the graders go by them but you didn't say if it was better or worse if they are visible after the coin is struck please let me know I'm very curious ? THANK YOU for all the videos I've been collecting coins since i was a kid in the 70's and always kept the odd, worn, toned or different ones like errors but didn't know much untill I started watching your videos a couple years ago
Not a 1961, but I have a 1964 and I’m still trying to figure if I should get it graded. It looks wayyyy shinier than normal ones. Not sure if it’s one of those special issue ones Could just be my eyes playing tricks on me lol

Great review of the Jefferson Nickel with the importance of having the Full Steps grade. The Planchet education is invaluable knowledge.

I have this coin in great condition from the year 1961!
I have a 1948 black nickel! That is why I pulled up this video. Pretty cool.
You have a 35% silver nickle
Silver coins pre 64 have silver in them. I keep all pretty 64.
great info i need to look closer at my 1961 nickels
I got one in my hand right now,, I have had a lot of them over the years.
I wonder why memorial cents aren't graded by steps like you said before 60's and early 70's weren't always struck well
Thanks for sharing that in-sider, nitty gritty info with us buddy, as I'm sure it will come in handy.
Interesting
I have been collecting Jefferson Nickels forever BRSH and I never knew how important Full Steps are!
What is "Full Steps" ?
Yo tengo una moneda de 1961 de Jefferson nickeis
