    Coach, I like the drill of the diagonal punch and the bag next to the player to prevent him from stepping in. Do you teach your athletes to always get their hands on each of the chest plate? I know a few years ago our defensive coordinator coach preferred we get one hand on the middle of the chest plate and other on outside because he wanted us to play half a man. You teach that or prefer each hand grabbing the outside chest plates as demonstrated in the video?

      What’s up BIG DAWG! Great question, to be very specific, it depends on 3 things. 1 what position are we talking about? 2. What the plan? 3. What can your athlete execute. As we know, defensive play is not a one size fit all instruction. It has to be trailered to the athlete and there style of play. This video is addressing hitting the sled for run drills.
      So what 1, if we are talking about a DT or NT than I would teach and train to 2 hand punch each chest plate because I would want them to control one gap while squeezing the other to a half gap. If it’s a DE, than in teaching punching the near number and holding the near ear. Inside hand goes no further than than the middle of the chest. Pinky punch.

      2. If the plan is to shock and shed, that’s better to execute with hand placement on both chest plates as a DT or NT. Hard to do otherwise. If a DE wants to shock and snatch, than once again I would attack the near number but grab the V of the shoulder pad, so DE could snatch down.

      3 If your athlete is not delivering a strong enough punch, even at DT, than have him punch the near number, maybe that works better for them. You might have a stronger DE who plays to the strong side to set a point, than maybe punching both chest plates is better for him. Personally speaking, I don’t like to force an athlete to play in a way that they are not equipped to play. For me it all about matching the move with the man. It’s our job as coaches to give our athlete the best opportunity to succeed.
      That’s my cliff note thought in this.
      Thanks for watching and asking.
      My first quick tip actually talks about punching 2 to 1 or half a man on pass rush. Check it out.

    Love you work Coach Rolle! What are your thoughts for the punch while slanting?

      What’s BIG DAWG Tom, I appreciate it. I’m glad the videos are beneficial. Our website www.bigdawgfootball.com has more exclusive DL content and we actually talk about “Powering the slant” especially if you are working to the A gap. Reason being is because the A gaps is the smallest gap out of the B and C. Depending on the defensive scheme and the offensive play, powering the slant is a necessity. If not they work into a center and they are exposed. If the DT is working from A to B, it still depends on the offensive scheme, but now you have more space to work with, where the power slant is not always needed, because the B gap had the potential to get better on pass.

      Powering your slant is definitely a useful tool to have. I work with my Dawgs slanting different ways and that’s one of them.
      Thanks for watching and commenting BIG DAWG!

    Great video, Coach! We’ve worked your progression from previous videos with our players, but I like the diagonal punch better, since our players are in odd techniques. I’m curious to see how you answer TonyQuist1003’s question. Thanks again for you’re outstanding work! Our players are directly benefiting from it.

      Whats up Big Dawg! I’m glad the videos are helping. The diagonal punches would be something I would be doing, as I mentioned if they are in an odd tech and during season. I wouldn’t neglect lining up in front of the sled punching but for me that would be for a beginner and early in the off season. I answered Tony’s question. Check it out. Getting those Big Dawg’s better coach!
      Let me know how I can further help.

    How do you stay lower than the OL??

    • @FiveStarLinemenAcademy
      @FiveStarLinemenAcademy  5 лет назад +3

      Staying lower than the OL has all to do with your hand Speed and impact at contact. You have to work on getting your hands in front of your hat as soon as possible. No hands no leverage.

    • @FiveStarLinemenAcademy
      @FiveStarLinemenAcademy  5 лет назад +2

      But it’s not just about being lower than the OL but about recreating the LOS and having more impact at contact! Firing your hands so you can fire your hips.
