I wrote a different comment with details Alex, but pause your own video at 3:23. The RT is not supposed to wash the defender down the line. In wide zone, he is very happy to be in that position. He is in a rip and run technique with helmet outside the defensive lineman who began with an outside shade. The HB has to see this by that third step, which is the case, and should be taking this ball wide in the wide zone. Combined with the great double team by the pair of TEs and this should be a 15+ yard run to the sidelines.
They took Becton (who’s hurt rn) and Vera-Tucker, so it’s not like they don’t have talent up front already. Maybe this franchise is just cursed or something, idk.
Now that I think about it I'm not sure why they thought it would be a great idea to bring in a rookie OC. I understand that he comes from a QB friendly scheme and has potential but it would be so much more ideal to have a veteran OC who you're confident can develop a QB
The scheme is ONLY qb friendly IF play action works, which means you have to run the ball effectively. It's a pure progression read offense and it is really hard to learn if you haven't been in the Shanahan system for minimum 2 years
@@jaheimRakim exactly !! People should honestly look how Matt Ryan struggled when learning the Shanahan system for the first time he had only 21 tds and 16 in 2015 but the very next year he wins mvp in the same exact offense 🗣 Its a very complex system people need to be patient
@@jaheimRakim Video also shows personnel issues as well. If receivers can't get separation and get that spacing down, defenses won't get stressed. TEs are very valuable in this system primarily as blockers but also as intermediate pass catch threats. Especially if the team plans to run more 2TE Personnel like the Jets favor. And NONE of their current TEs are cutting it. Look at other Shanahan type offenses that favor 2TE and they have quality players there. Good RBs also matter to a degree but it also comes down to the line to get any RB holes for them to run through.
The problem is this isn't really a talent than the group just needing to play more together. The biggest takeaway besides some talent that is out for the Jets is miscommunication. And that is VERY vital in an offensive scheme from the Shanahan coaching tree (Mike LaFleur being a disciple of that after all). And finding OLs that are talented AND are great communicating in most schemes don't grow on trees either.
After years of neglect, Joe Douglas is trying. It really hasn’t gone smoothly, but there really isn’t much more he could’ve done outside of severely overpaying to get good o-lineman to come to a bad situation, and overpaying FA’s is why the Jets are so bad in the first place. This painful process is the only real way out. Otherwise, it’ll just be a cycle of being bad, ascend to mediocre, then regress to being bad, like it’s been forever
Wilson only looks “lost” if you’ve only watched the patriots game. He was running for his life against Carolina but still didn’t look “lost”. The primary issue is that GVR and McGovern on the OL and the tight ends just absolutely stink.
It's pretty common for young QBs, especially ones who play like Wilson does, to struggle when they turn their back from the defense during play action. The question is will Mike run more shotgun plays where Wilson can see the defense more clearly every play.
They did a fair amount of play action at BYU, but like you said it was more typically from shot gun. The Jets have done some play action out of shot gun, but their run game is most effective from under center, so it's tricky
I notice another dbrickashaw ferguson is in need (interior run blocker). There’s no coincidence that Leveon Bell looked like Joique Bell in that offense..
3:03 I know you know Alex, but even that play is the fault of the HB. To those who don't understand: The HB has to read outside in and make his choice on his third step. By his third step, the TE double team Alex shows has a helmet outside the defender and is ready to pop wide. The second TE should be able to scoop under and seal that block as they move their feet while the outside TE can help keep the defender inside and eventually release to the next level and seal pursuit coming from the inside out. Even the WR had his man locked up outside. That ball should have gone wide for 15+ yards and been a one on one against the safety. HBs are expected to beat one man. Just beat one man with lower of moves, but beat one man and we will block the rest. Advanced information: against this specific defensive front, you have to read the first down lineman in the defensive front, which the Left Tackle ALSO had outside leverage and was defeating by the third step which means it was 2x the fault of the HB. He should have gone outside the tackle down hill and began his wide bounce when he saw the TE double team.
@@frenchg0rilla - You don't go through the double team, you go around them. The outside TE seals the defender and the inside TE takes over the block as the outside one peels to #8. That is the scheme.
@@frenchg0rilla - Notice how the WR looks to get outside leverage against the CB with the intent of sealing him and having the HB run between him and the sideline for a big gain. That WR is NOT looking to block the CB *to* the sideline, he want to keep the CB *away* from the sideline.
Nice. I was looking at some NY Jets chat forums, and there already seems to be this nutty divide with some fans legit writing off Wilson as a lost cause after two weeks. It was more than a handful of people too. That's loco to me. Perhaps it's just a sign of the times with instant gratification era in addition to a few guys that have come into the league the last decade years and were off to the races in their first year (Ryan, Herbert, Luck, Prescott, etc.). Also the recent three week success of Darnold is more salt in the wound. Despite this obviously the skeptics should be more patient. Like you stated rookie head coach, rookie OC, and rookie QB. Something I was a little surprised to learn is that the Jets didn't sign a veteran to be around Wilson at the very least. Just seems like one of those old school approaches that still warrants doing today.
I don’t understand why they didn’t bring in a veteran QB either especially with both of the 49ers backups being free agents and having starting experience. Seemed like a no brainer.
I was probably a little too easy on Wilson in the video, but he's had some really promising plays. I'm just worried if he'll develop consistency in this system, with this coach and with this personnel
@@deontecallaway4026 a veteran QB wouldn't change anything with how shitty the talent the Jets have on offense. Especially for the scheme they run. Better coaches know how to play their scheme to the strength of their personnel. Mike LaFleur's issues so far is he's stubborn to run his scheme with the personnel he has that doesn't create the advantages it is known for. So the result is the consistency isn't there and Zach Wilson is forced to play beyond his expectations on 2nd/3rd and long situations because the Jets keep shooting themselves on the foot.
Interesting watching these young QBs. During the preseason Justin Fields took and blindside hit but during the bangles game they tried the same blitz on him and he called it out and got it blocked correctly. Here at the 7:27 mark Wilson got sacked hard. I wonder if he'll adjust if he sees it again.

@@kurtpunchesthings2411 LMAO the only wins I'm taking for the Jets this season are fluke ones like they had with the Rams last season. Fins defense have mismatches like the Bills offense but they are talented enough like the Pats defense along with a great coach in Flores to give the Jets problems on both games. Bengals actually have a receiver core that can put up scores on a good day with Burrow throwing. Falcons and Jags could be those 2 winnable games if the Jets can keep up scoring with them. And the Jags are just pitiful overall because they legit have good talent on paper but are still under utilized by their own coach staff.
4-13 or 5-12 if we're lucky! The good thing about being this bad is that when you do things to improve and the wins come, momentum can also come with it and hopefully swing things in a big way. With the schedule we have coming up (Pats, Bengals, Colt's, Bills (twice), we'd be lucky if we can get anything. Maybe we got a chance against Miami, Jacksonville, or Houston. New Orleans is looking pretty bad as well, so you never know.
gotta him some slack, playing 2 of the best defenses in the league for his first 2 games, literal trial by fire for him. lawrence looked more lost vs a team of HSers in the secondary when he played the Texans
Its not even about what those defenses did that scared Wilson. Pats defense is very good but Belichick didn't do anything special. He just forced the Jets to try beat him with how good they can execute the scheme. The Jets hung themselves because they failed on the scheme themselves and the Pats were just in position to jump those bad passes. And you saw that on the video where O-line is miscommunicating and the play calling is focused on stressing the secondary but can't because Jets receivers get ZERO separation. Funny enough the Pats know that life too on offense because despite their better running game, they can't keep defenses honest that they can go deep for big plays. Lawrence looks lost but the blame on that part is how the coaching staff with Urban Meyer looks just as lost.
4:00 Sorry for three comments, but I disagree with your break down of that run Alex. You also degrade the Center, and that isn't fair at all. That DT didn't have a chance on that play. Zero penetration up field. Almost no lateral movement either and the Center had him walled off with plenty of white jersey for the HB to run off of. Even as the DT tries to slip under the block, the Center turns him out and gives him ZERO chance at down field pursuit against a break away run or to find a fumble or anything that could happen. I give that Center an A- or B+ simply for doing a great job and not dominating him to earn an A+
@@AlexRollinsNFL - Yes. I can share the Alex Gibbs footage and pdf if you want to back up what I am saying buddy. :) - I wrote an more detailed reply as well in a different comment.
The Shanahan "tree" of zone blocking run didn't work in the super bowl, and the McVay offense didn't work in the super bowl against BB... why would it work now? The issues are the Jets honestly. Saleah is a D coach, a great one but Mike LaFluer... he's hoping he turns into Matt, but Matt has Rodgers, Wilson will be lucky to be a Darnold.
I'm glad Darnold got a chance somewhere else. I usually don't cut QBs much slack, but there were plenty of times in the last couple years where it was clear Darnold could play and make great throws. I think the Jets are truly such a train wreck that it would be hard for any young QB to have success there. I haven't really watched any of Zach Wilson to know if he's just lost on an NFL field or what, but Darnold seems to be playing very well in Carolina right now.
It’s been 2 games this year may be awful but that’s how we can determine who is a potential talent for the future give the offense and Zach a break let them learn then decide
I dont think it was wise to have a rookie OC to go along with a rookie HC and QB. The NFL is not forgiving for ignorance and nobody in that group has experience to lean on. Learning on the fly leads to many L's
The Jets did exactly that with a rookie head coach in Rex Ryan, a rookie OC in Brian Schottenheimer, and a rookie QB in Mark Sanchez. They made it to the AFC Championship their first year together.
@@abyzmul Our roster was a lot more better then though tbf, the O-Line was really solid and that defense was stacked (although obviously having Rex helped a ton)

@@abyzmul Oh yeah my bad if it sounded like I disagreed with your point, it definitely can be done in the right situation. @@supermoneyball420 I think the optimism was that Saleh would get his system and scheme running for the team at a consistent enough level. Even with the patchwork of new talent around. But part of the struggle is Mike LaFleur not really running said scheme for the personnel they currently have. 2TEs sets to go with a OLine group that isn't used to each other yet is not great when all u got is Kroft and a vet in Griffin.
It seems like the majority of our receivers are really mediocre if not bad. You see dropped or blown catches, bad route running and most of the time poorly executed plays that make the defense’s job too easy. Couple that with bad O-Line play then its going to be a disaster
@AlexRollinsNFL. The offensive line isn't going to get any better this season. Wouldn't it be better to just sit Wilson to protect him from getting beaten up or suffering a serious injury?
I think sitting him to protect from injury sends a bad message to the organization and would have a negative effect on the culture. The time is always now in the NFL
@@allanhee I don't think Wilson has durability issues like Carr did. Plus Carr got pounded and lost his overall confidence in a span of 4 seasons. Wilson probably understands this all too well because he's making good money now but if he's in a better team situation, he can negotiate for a better second contract if he looks better. So I'm curious of certain guys in this draft class namely Lawrence, Fields and Wilson are highly critical of the team building success around them as it is also critical for their future financial situation.
Different play caller, similar problematic issues IMO. Gase was too committed on 11 personnel which made it predictable and he didn't have the receivers to get advantages off that. He also kept running the ball on early downs, not getting good yardage out of it and forcing Darnold to salvage the drive on 3rd and long situations. In this case Mike LaFleur's play design is sound in terms of predictability but doesn't have the optimal personnel to execute it consistently. So you still get similar results where they don't get big gains on runs, the Oline protection isn't consistent, the receivers can't separate and Wilson is trying to save the drive on 2nd/3rd and long situations and often out of structure. Though in LaFleur's case its easier to fix it as the season goes along but we will see if that actually happens.
I see Mike Lafleur has pulled the tried and true lie on the resume and train on the job scheme. That being said, the Jets have seriously got to infuse this roster with some talent. To suck this bad at just overall roster building for this long is just ridiculous.
They are starting to do so but good lineman free agents go to win now teams so they just need to keep drafting and hit a couple lotto tickets for the outside skill players.
@@AlexRollinsNFL I wasn’t really sold on him in the first place (one year sample and poor competition) but man is it looking rough in every way imaginable.
O-line is both a talent and a miscommunication issue. Rare to have superb talents that have both on the FA market just come to your team. I think the Rams O-line is a good example of how they recovered after having their big name FAs leave. McVay did play more 2TE to alleviate that and help the run game for a bit. But that group also got used to playing together for at least 2 seasons so they get consistent results now.
That’s a problem I noticed in college. He has great arm talent, but rarely put velocity on his throws. He doesn’t drive his legs very well, his throws are all arm
When the Bears fire Nagy and hire the Cowboys' Kellen Moore next year, it's going to be the same story as the Jets unless Moore can bring Dallas' OL, TE, and WRs with him. It's easy to design and call plays when you have pro bowl level talent at key positions.
The Jets O-line need to step up and give Wilson another second or two and Wilson needs to concentrate on 5-10 yard passes, with consistent drives, like Brady's done his entire career. When a receiver gets freakishly open, then hit him, but Wilson needs to stop forcing plays that aren't there and they'll be much better. Jets defense isn't much to brag about either.
confuse NFL defenses by doing this simple trick: Always run on first down for no gain, run on second down for two yards or a negative play, now on third and long, pass the ball off play action if possible
Honestly, don't have the personnel to zone block well... If they can find the time and talent up front and at TE to learn how to execute then they will be able to succeed. Zone blocking really requires execution from all 7 guys up front.
I’m a die hard 49er fan.. The Jets are headed in the right direction… Wilson can play, they just need to be better on their offensive line…specifically at center and right guard… The Jets obviously need a better #1 wr and have to draft better rbs to create their stable of runners in the Mike Shanahan speed zone running scheme…these dudes look slow AF… The Jets will be fine under Saleh… Thanks for the vids Alex…it’s hard to find a football science guy…
Thanks John appreciate that bro! Zach just needs more experience in this system, people forget it took guys like Matt Ryan a year to really get comfortable
This is why you don't start a rookie QB when you don't have an above-average line. It almost never works out for the QB, or the team. I've seen team after team, after team try to do this and fail miserably and I always wonder what if they had let them sit for a season and built up their protection for them. Guys like Blaine Gabbert, Josh Rosen, or better David Carr getting sacked 76 times in his rookie season. Maybe these guys and so many more might of actually lived up to their potential if they hadn't been skrewed over like the Jets and Jaguars are with Zach and Trevor.
@@AlexRollinsNFL Uhh Alex Chris Herndon now plays for the Vikings. In Kubiak's system no less that also uses 2TE from time to time. Its def gon be a rough year for Saleh/Lafleur when they don't have the personnel to execute that offense efficiently.

we've been saying this for 4 years
They took Becton (who’s hurt rn) and Vera-Tucker, so it’s not like they don’t have talent up front already. Maybe this franchise is just cursed or something, idk.
The OLine turned out among the better in the league. Eventually, the QB play has to play better to aid the OLine.
@@HarrisonHollers yeah they turned it around and I’m hoping that the foundation holds together because they could be really special if it does
Now that I think about it I'm not sure why they thought it would be a great idea to bring in a rookie OC. I understand that he comes from a QB friendly scheme and has potential but it would be so much more ideal to have a veteran OC who you're confident can develop a QB
We had one. Greg Knapp was passing game coordinator, QB coach, basically co-OC. Then he passed away. Sucks
ALWAYS BUILD FROM THE TRENCHES OUT!
You’d think people would have caught on to this by now
The problem is this isn't really a talent than the group just needing to play more together.
11:30-12:00 no brakes no stopage no stress next man up Zachary Wilson
Another Saturday, another banger from Mr. Rollins. Great vid!! You’re the man!
Bro thank you!! Thanks for the love!
I notice another dbrickashaw ferguson is in need (interior run blocker). There’s no coincidence that Leveon Bell looked like Joique Bell in that offense..

@@AlexRollinsNFL Thanks man, I really appreciate it!

I know you know Alex, but even that play is the fault of the HB.
To those who don't understand:
The HB has to read outside in and make his choice on his third step.
#8 had a open lane to the HB if he went towards the double team, I feel.
@@frenchg0rilla - You don't go through the double team, you go around them. The outside TE seals the defender and the inside TE takes over the block as the outside one peels to #8. That is the scheme.
@@PaulGaither Oh I see, the TE lifting his head up. So i guess he had to engage with #8 as the back goes on the outside.
@@frenchg0rilla - Notice how the WR looks to get outside leverage against the CB with the intent of sealing him and having the HB run between him and the sideline for a big gain. That WR is NOT looking to block the CB *to* the sideline, he want to keep the CB *away* from the sideline.
@@PaulGaither Yea thanks for the insight man.
Best Analysis! Bravo!
Thank you brother!!
@@deontecallaway4026 No shit
What can I say we can only base our opinion on what we have seen so far 5 ints in 2 games is terrible
Diamond fronts are the perfect counter to the wide zone.
They can be!
Great video! Where do you get your film from? Game pass doesn’t offer all-22 coaches film anymore and I want it.
Thanks Samuel! They just added it back to gamepass, but I also used Euro gamepass with a VPN for a while and I have another hook up that helped me too
Thank you so much!
Always depends who's making the line calls, but what worries me is at times Zach isn't looking to the correct side where he's hot
@@AlexRollinsNFL Agreed.
Developing better pass protection schemes that fit the strengths and weaknesses of your O-line.
OC’s too busy drawing up new route concepts and pre snap motions.
All this stuff about a lack of a vertical threat makes it even more baffling that Denzel ms isn't being played

Facts :(
It will be interesting to see end of the season who "improve" from week 2 Jaguars or Jets. By improve I mean who gets the top pick.
Jets legitimately might go 0-17
@@ElenasDad I doubt it mainly cause teams we got that we could beat
Bengals
Jaguars
Texans
Falcons
Eagles
Dolphins in our home game
Hell we could even beat the buccs because by that stage they will probably have already secured playoffs and would be resting their starters same with the Bills in the second game we play them we ain't going to the playoffs obviously but I don't see 0-17 happening
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 SAVE THIS COMMENT. JETS WON'T WIN A GAME ALL YEAR.
@@ElenasDad oh I sure will
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 LMAO the only wins I'm taking for the Jets this season are fluke ones like they had with the Rams last season.
Also, hold on Burns at 9:07. Should’ve been a flag anyway.
gotta him some slack, playing 2 of the best defenses in the league for his first 2 games, literal trial by fire for him. lawrence looked more lost vs a team of HSers in the secondary when he played the Texans
That 2nd and 28 INT still blows my mind.
Zach just got completely overwhelmed and lost his confidence. After today's loss too, that's the main worry
IT TAKES TIME TO MASTER SAID QB FRIENDLY SYSTEM, A VET LIKE MATT RYAN NEEDED 2 OFFSEASONS TO MASTER IT.
Can you do a video on the Ravens Defense and Wink Martindale’s scheme?
We don't have a defense this year😒
Great idea I'll put them on the list!
I'm so sad Marcus Peters got hurt 😑
Outstanding breakdown!

Sorry for three comments, but I disagree with your break down of that run Alex.
I give that Center an A- or B+ simply for doing a great job and not dominating him to earn an A+
I simple didn't understand why he's negatively breaking down a 5 or 6 yard run?
@@tiannagandy - I think Alex thought it was a good example of bad blocking, but it wasn't. The blocking was good. The HB made an error.
Was that the play I spent a few minutes on?
@@AlexRollinsNFL - Yes. I can share the Alex Gibbs footage and pdf if you want to back up what I am saying buddy. :) - I wrote an more detailed reply as well in a different comment.
watching this after the titans game feels better, Go zach go, new york sack exchange
It hurts so much
The Shanahan "tree" of zone blocking run didn't work in the super bowl, and the McVay offense didn't work in the super bowl against BB... why would it work now?
The issues are the Jets honestly. Saleah is a D coach, a great one but Mike LaFluer... he's hoping he turns into Matt, but Matt has Rodgers, Wilson will be lucky to be a Darnold.
Its gonna take time to build that team.
Right on.
Nice video man.. jet fan
Thanks Aiden, hope it gets better brother!
Keep em coming
Every Saturday!
It’s been 2 games this year may be awful but that’s how we can determine who is a potential talent for the future give the offense and Zach a break let them learn then decide
Great breakdown.
Thank you Terry!
@@supermoneyball420 Absolutely! I agree. Those teams were stacked. Just stating a fact, because the original poster said that it's never a good idea. I'm just saying that it can, and has been done.
@@abyzmul Oh yeah my bad if it sounded like I disagreed with your point, it definitely can be done in the right situation. I just think people got a little too optimistic thinking Saleh was gonna instantly make this team a winner when it’s still a young team with serious holes on the O-Line and secondary.
Can you do one on Zac Taylor’s play calling
That's a good idea, I also did an episode that was on the entire Bengals offense in the offseason
It seems like the majority of our receivers are really mediocre if not bad. You see dropped or blown catches, bad route running and most of the time poorly executed plays that make the defense’s job too easy. Couple that with bad O-Line play then its going to be a disaster
I love these videos
Thanks brother!
@@AlexRollinsNFL But wouldn't a career-ending injury or a permanently shell-shocked QB (ala David Carr) set the franchise back just as much?
@@allanhee I don't think Wilson has durability issues like Carr did. Plus Carr got pounded and lost his overall confidence in a span of 4 seasons. Wilson probably understands this all too well because he's making good money now but if he's in a better team situation, he can negotiate for a better second contract if he looks better. So I'm curious of certain guys in this draft class namely Lawrence, Fields and Wilson are highly critical of the team building success around them as it is also critical for their future financial situation.
Sam Darnold watching this video like "I tried to tell them!"
Darnold had gase not leflaur and saleh lmao
First to a Alex Rollins video? Going to be a good day
Hey brother!!!!!
Jets fan here. Not really worried. Team has a ton of holes and already looks better than they did under Gase. Jets probably gonna go 4-5 wins.
See thats the point were better then we were last year and probably will end up with 4 wins
I like it Sean, it's still very early and this is a young staff and team
You should do one on Noah Fant
Mike LaFleur has just been doing terrible right now
There IS something special about Zach and the supporting pieces. Just don’t worry about it. Way Too early to judge.
Zach Wilson have to stop seeing those ghosts.👻
I see Mike Lafleur has pulled the tried and true lie on the resume and train on the job scheme.
That being said, the Jets have seriously got to infuse this roster with some talent. To suck this bad at just overall roster building for this long is just ridiculous.
They are starting to do so but good lineman free agents go to win now teams so they just need to keep drafting and hit a couple lotto tickets for the outside skill players.
See what's what hurts the most Toast we just have retards doing our draft no fucking wonder we suck
Will be very interesting if Zach doesn't show improvement and they finish with the #1 overall pick next year
@@AlexRollinsNFL I wasn’t really sold on him in the first place (one year sample and poor competition) but man is it looking rough in every way imaginable.
I really wish Zach would have fallen to #3 that way he could develop slowly with the real Shanahan and dominate next year with my 9ers.
Bro, I love Wilson…
But I can’t say I’m disappointed with the Lance pick either…
as a die hard Jets fan I have to say it would also help if zac would put some heat on the ball and quit floating it. I hope they get batter.
That’s a problem I noticed in college. He has great arm talent, but rarely put velocity on his throws. He doesn’t drive his legs very well, his throws are all arm
@@Sentient_Blob Agreed I see potential and I how we can turn it around this season all im asking is my jets to go above .500
Takes time to change the culture.
Agreed!
It’s like the same thing for Trevor but expect our defense sucks and our offense line is ok but our running back isn’t doing the best
Why is Bill always looking like Palpatine
Have we ever seen them in the same room?
Make a vid about Logan Wilson
Jets defense isn't much to brag about either.
confuse NFL defenses by doing this simple trick:
Always run on first down for no gain, run on second down for two yards or a negative play, now on third and long, pass the ball off play action if possible
I hope the jets do at least decent. I love Robert Saleh
Saleh is an impressive individual! He's been put in a bad situation too honestly, I hope he turns it around
Honestly, don't have the personnel to zone block well... If they can find the time and talent up front and at TE to learn how to execute then they will be able to succeed.
Zone blocking really requires execution from all 7 guys up front.
Watched JT Sullivan's breakdown on the jets... their play designs are so dumb
I’m a die hard 49er fan..
The Jets are headed in the right direction…
Wilson can play, they just need to be better on their offensive line…specifically at center and right guard…
The Jets obviously need a better #1 wr and have to draft better rbs to create their stable of runners in the Mike Shanahan speed zone running scheme…these dudes look slow AF…
The Jets will be fine under Saleh…
Thanks for the vids Alex…it’s hard to find a football science guy…
Thanks John appreciate that bro! Zach just needs more experience in this system, people forget it took guys like Matt Ryan a year to really get comfortable
@9:51 🤣
They will improve next year first year HC with first year QB won’t always be playoff caliber
