This album hit the world like an Atomic bomb. It obliterated everything in it's path, and took no prisoners... A new age of guitar hero is born!

Yep... I think it's hard for anyone who wasn't around when it came out to grasp how groundbreaking it was. I remember my high school buddy calling me over to his house and saying "You've gotta hear this!" There was nothing like it.

Your impression about the surfer is exactly right because one of the lyrics is" I'm hanging 10 now baby as I ride your sonic wave". hanging 10 (in case you don't know) is when a surfer stands on the front of his board with two feet side-by-side with his 10 toes hanging off the front of the board.
Very old school technique and very cool and quite risky. Van Halen's early music with Roth has that crazy surfer energy, and given that they played up and down the west coast of Southern California nearly seven nights a week throughout the mid-70s playing huge backyard parties and so forth, the fact that surfers dug this music is quite appropriate and foreseeable .
The contrast is David Lee Roth is singing about kids in the 70s (thr age of hi-fidelity coupled with huge ear muff style head phones, that were so loud it's unbelievable, Jackson parents were far less concerned with safety including the future health of their children's ears. So Roth lyrics include "lay your bodies down
I'm in your beds, your BEDS
put your headphones on I'm in your heads" (screaming the word HEADS. So he's basically saying that he's on fire because he's so hot in terms of this performance.
If you notice Michael Anthony's Bass during the I'm on fire part,he sounds like he's trying to strike a flint, and start the fire and Eddie's solo and his tone is so sizzling meaning that on his amp the vacuum tubes and the transformers and speakers that give him that sound are literally as hot as an incandescent light bulb meaning the tubes glass is probably so freaking hot that it would fry your fingers to the touch I know because I have a reissue of his amp. To get this kind of sound especially at that time before a lot of effects existed like distortion pedals were in their early days etc you relied on the amplifiers power tubes and you basically would turn on your amp and leave it rolling for an hour or two on standby to get those tubes nice and hot and then crank the volume and you got that sizzling tune

Love this one, and this debut album changed rock forever, kind of similar to that Boston debut album. This album was on the radio all the time and I remember even hearing it out at the lake, where the concession stand was also blaring rock music on the PA system. Sometimes I think they played this entire album while people swam and partied.
I don't recall you doing Little Dreamer from this album but then I could have just missed it. Love that one.
And right as we got used to hearing this all the time and it became an instant classic, their second album came out with the single Beautiful Girls, and by then I was in high school and I loved that song so much, I immediately sat down and tried to figure out the guitar part.
The problem with doing the album version of Eruption, which is actually very short, there really is no way to do it without letting it flow on into the next one, You Got Me, a Kinks cover, so classic. They flow into each other on the album and I'm not sure I ever heard it on FM radio without it going directly into You Got Me.

We entered the new Millenium in 1978, and after listening to the bare guitar tracks, nothing but props of Roth for being able to put words to music that was different to say the least!

I was never a fan (I can't stand Roth. He shoulda been a game show host and not annoyed me for 20 years.) but there was nothing like that first album. It landed like a nuclear explosion. It was 1978 I was almost 14 and my older brother was 17. For months, that album blared out his bedroom windows over the backyard pool and it was either get behind VH or leave town. Now, 40 years later, I can listen without cringing. Thanks for the sketchy memories, lad. Happy new year and rock on!

The Studio version of Eruption is a must, its short and concise, and was the first thing we heard back in 78 that flipped the script on Guitar playing. That live version is just him fuckig around.

You need to hear Eruption not as an extended live improvisation showcase for Eddie's playing.
You absolutely need to hear the album version, because it's far more of a tight, structured composition, on par with Bach or Mozart.
