    I talk about my Red Eared Slider Turtle that I’ve had since I was 2 years old that my Father purchased for me. This is RUclips’s OLDEST Pet Turtle.
    NOTE: I know it’s a girl. Thanks to you awesome viewers I was able to ensure and double check the sex. 2 vets said male throughout its life and I took the turtle to a reptile vet locally and she assured me Ninja is a FEMALE!
    Thanks again.

    My Mother Was born in 1949. She bought a quarter sized turtle from a dime store in Chicago at age 5. My Mother turned 72 this past December. She STILL has her turtle! It's a male River Cooter named Freddy. It's incredible story and people are always blown away how long she's had him

    I got my slider when I was 8 years old. Today I am 75 close to 76. My turtle is 67 going on 68 with no end in sight. In the summer in Pennsylvania he is in a 2 foot tall 300 gallon tank outside with a waterfall and a closed off basking area he can climb to. He spends a lot of time basking and swimming under the waterfall. In the winter we move him to a 2 foot high 100 gallon tank with a heater at 82 degrees and a basking area with an utraviolet heat lamp at 92 degrees. Henry is very active, very fast and if you approach his summer basking area without calling his name he'll dive off the basking area splashing into the water. The thing I have concern about is where will he live next with the proper care. I currently have 2 options!

  • @shady4chi
    @shady4chi 2 года назад +27

    Beautiful red ear he looks nice and healthy. My red ear is a male and turns 31 this September 😆. He’s still so active and love’s to bask on him rock while letting his legs and tail hang in the water. I have seen some male’s with female traits but honestly yours really does have all the female traits. The wide neck plus his jaw is more defined, shorter tail that starts thick then gets skinny towards the end and the short claws. Not to mention from this angle he look’s like a tank 😂. Either way sweet turtle.

    Great story. I have had my Red Ear slider 18 years now. It was given to my daughter as a gift from a friend who is no longer with us for her 1st birthday. My daughter is 19 now. My turtles name is Turd and even when my kids grew up I just could not let him go. I have a younger daughter that is 5 now and she loves him. She feeds him, helps clean the tank, etc. I feed my guy fresh gold fish once a month cuz he really likes the chase, he plays with a ping pong ball that floats around. My guy is about 7 inches round and in Great health. I have him in a 90 gallon tank. I know your turtle is much older but how did he get so big? I was told that mine will only get to be about 6 1/2 inches round.

    Wow! Same. Mine's Lasted 18 years. I went through puberty, graduated HS and College, got my first job, first apartment, he was there for all that. I'm not going to lie, near the end I got really tired of taking care of him and his bites. But never once did I think to release him or neglect him. He was my responsibility, I'm the one who chose him. So yeah I told to my coworkers to check the lifespan of any pet they choose for their kids.

    I adopted one from a friend and he's at least 20 years old. Great pet, was surprised by how much personality and attachment I found. His shell is really dark compared to what I see in pictures or youtube, so I was wondering if that was normal for older turtles or if I needed to work on his diet.
    Beautiful and majestic animals. Fun to watch them float around like the Nirvana baby with their legs out, very relaxing

    Your turtle look like a female turtle to me not a male . I have 2 turtles and my female looks exactly like yours . While the female had short claws and tail and male had longer craws and tail . I love the way you and your family treat the turtle . Some people don’t treat them right and it s so sad . In my home the two turtles are the center of my universe. That much they mean to me for all the joy and happiness they bring into my life . I have my turtle about 11 years but I got them when they already about 10 . I hope they will live forever with me or at least 40 more years . I heard if we take good care of them they can live up to 60 years . I hope this is true . You made me laugh when you said you brought the turtle to school with you and now your kids play with them . How fantastic that is . 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Here in New Jersey ponds freeze and red-eared sliders hibernate but I don't know if they call it that I know that they slow down their metabolism and they sleep for the winter months and barely eat or move around if I let the tank get cold in the winter months mine will pick a corner of the tank and just sleep until the water gets warmer believe it or not look it up I got mine from a pond where these Turtles would survive below zero temperatures they're all over New Jersey and it gets cold here Turtles are a pain in the ass when it comes to cleanliness I change my water daily even though I have two fully submersible Fluval 3 filters and they are amazing but I still change the water because I have it set set up so that I have a hose running out the dirty water making everything much more easily I don't have to carry buckets anymore one of these days I'll put up a video of Mine by the way that is not a boy if it was a boy it would have long nails and it would have an indent on the bottom part of the carapace so that he could Mount the female the females carapace is flat on the bottom side and she has shorter nails mine actually lays eggs every year of course they're not fertile because she doesn't have a boy if you're feeding it the right thing and she has a proper nutrition how you haven't found any eggs in the water because I find them every year sometimes twice a year and a lot of them they're a little bit bigger than a quail egg

I don’t even remember how old he is, probably 10 years old. I recently began building him an outdoor habitat because he’s too big for his aquarium. It’s still in the beginning stages but I’m so excited to have him explore his own space. I will bring him in for extreme weather but I just know he needs his space. He’s super chill and responds to me tapping my leg when he’s outside. lol his name is Leonardo (yep, big TMNT fan here too)

    Got my red-eared slider 18 years ago! His name is Carlito. He was a present for my 5-year old grandson who is now 23. When I bought him, he was the size of a quarter and so cute! I was so excited about giving them (there were 2) to my 2 oldest grandsons, that I forgot to see if it was ok for them to have a pet! Naturally, they could not! So I ended up getting 2 unexpected pets to take care of. Could not take them back to the kiosk where I purchased them and ALL of the things turtles need. My 16 year old daughter was so convincing in getting me to buy everything, that they offered her a job selling turtles and turtle paraphernalia! Unfortunately, one of the little turtles passed away. So I've had one, Carlito, ever since. I'm about to get him a larger tank and change his environment. He's about 8 -10 inches. Any ideas?

      @@aquarium.talktv My wife was invited to a reptile farm a year ago. There they saw a caretaker feed red-eared sliders. He fed them chicken necks. At one point he had a turtle bite one end of the neck and started pulling back at the other end until the neck was bitten in half. Then he said, "See how vicious these creatures are? Imagine the neck was your child's finger. Keeping these turtles as pets is one of the dumbest mistakes people make. All these turtles were donated to us by their former owners who couldn't take their agression any longer." That made a big impression on my wife.

    I have one that is around 12 years old named Squirtle. The turtle itself is easy to take care of, the chore comes in changing the water, moving the tank around, and affording the size tank, heat lamps, and filters you will need. They are very hardy, but do appreciate variety of foods. I rotate through three different kinds of foods, and supplement with veggies and fruit, and the occasional earthworm or small bites of chicken or beef.

I have spent a good sum of money for the recommended size but I also haven't seen many as old as "Shelly " he's not as big as he could of been he's been living in 20 -40 gal tank for much of his life and I witnessed his first tank he could swim in his 125 gal tank. I just burried my red slider turtle.We got her when she was 1 week old and a quarter in size. She lasted with us for 28 years. She was a great turtle. She would of lasted more but she caught pheumonia. If you are planning on getting one, They need large tank to move in and a basking bridge and basking light to heat them and the light to help their shell to absorb vitamin D. Because they are not outdoors in the sun, they need these special lamps. Zoomeds is the best turtle pellet food for them cause it has vitamin D3 and calcium for their shell Whereas the other foods don't. Make sure it says vitamin D3 this vitamin is vital in their diet. Make sure their water tank has a warm water heater thermometer because they need warm water all the time or else they go into hybernation mode and wont eat and they get sick with pheumonia. That is what happened to mine. I hope this infomation helps.❤
