Great video! I love the shot of the copper flashing on top as well! I took a screenshot of it so I can show it to my roofing guys next week when they replace my singles and install the copper strips!
I did that to my house 16 years ago , but I did not use trusses , just framed it "conventionally" , I made a huge attic area for storage and stairs instead of those junk "pull down ladders" ..... Everyone loved my house for that design ...... large garages , large driveways , large attic space you can comfortably walk in , and stairs instead of attic ladders are GREAT IDEAS ..... Anyone could walk all through my attic with ease , get to the AC easy , all that good stuff ..... cramped difficult attics suck and are worthless , and it is not hard to design it where you can "move around" easy ..... It is a very good idea and your AC guy will love you , not to mention TONS of storage ..... Deck your attic folks and make the rafters at least a 6 or 7 pitch to give you some headroom .... To hell with crawling on your knees up in the attic !!!! Good advice Tim ..... Unfortunately because of the recession I had to sell my house ..... Bummer .... New Owners love it and it sold in a month .... Didn't even need a Realtor
Thanks! I just contacted my local truss manufacturer and even without plans they were able to design and price out my room-in-an-attic trusses, over the phone. I even had them beef up the floor a bit because I'll use the area for storage. When I get closer to the build, I'll do it more formalized, with drawings, etc.
@@askthebuilder You can guess what happened, but I'll tell you anyway. Lumber prices quadrupled and I shelfed the build, I was the first one at work to catch covid, then everyone caught it. We lost a contract, so they fired me. Now I live in a dumpster and hold a sign by the freeway.
I just got pricing from my local truss company for 40ft free span. On an 10/12 pitch, I got an 8ft high, 14ft wide room space. Mine were $350/ea. They were designed for 2ft centers. But, they were too tall to ship, so they had to be made in 2 pieces, top peak, and bottom.
@@askthebuilder I just mean how well does it address these issues? How good are they from an engineering perspective? For example, are they bad with snow? Do they add a lot of extra cost?

This was a miss on my current home. Even the builder went...SHOOT...when I mentioned it. Our garage is a 3 Car garage...we stated with all that space we would have a ton of storage...unfortunately they used traditional trusses instead of attic trusses. Kicking myself on this to this very day.

@@cornpop7805 Buwahahahahaha....Yea...that was done a few years ago, I'll be building a new home in about 5 years for retirement. It will have attic trusses in it. BTW: We did actually ask to have that quoted...yea...NOPE. Ripping the entire roof off of the garage area (3 car) with Hip and Gable was going to be prohibitively expensive. I can literally rent a 20x20 storage unit just down the street from me for 10 years for what the cost of ripping the roof and trusses off and re-doing it was going to cost. Lesson learned.
@@askthebuilder Yep...never again. TOTALLY missed it with all the other customizations we did to our house 20 years ago when building. When I saw the builder about 5 years after our house was done (the housing market tanked right after that, and our subdivision took 7 or 8 years to complete), I said "All this fun we had customizing this house, and what did we forget? He was puzzled...I said "Attic Trusses over the garage". He laughed, and said "I've never done them, nobody's ever asked, I would have for sure done that for you instead of standard". Live and learn.
Trust me, I've never had an issue installing drywall on them. Why are these any different than normal trusses? Next time offer up proof of your statement.

A perfectly timed video for me, as I was wondering how I would go about building a loft attic space over a large open span without beams

How wide was the house? I'm planning a 24 x 40 two story with a 24x24 third floor and would like a room above the 3rd floor?
28 feet I'm 99 percent sure. It's my daughter's house on MDI.

Can you design the attic trusses to essentially be the 2nd story of a home and use it for living space?
Yes you can.
Thx for video.
Could you make a video about vent deflectors? Very cool idea!
It would be about ten seconds long. "Here's a vent deflector. Attach it to the vent to deflect air."

Is a Mansard roof a good idea?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Function should always trump form.

I have trusses in my attic and HATE them. My next house will not have them.
Regular trusses offer no storage possibility. Consider getting STORAGE trusses or ATTIC trusses as you see in this video should you want a BONUS room.
@@askthebuilder What about the fact that trusses usually have 2x4 floor joists?
