Awesome video, great message. I recently saw a demo of the the GPT3 language model by microsoft which was able to answer questions about movie scenes and write alternative endings to that movie. Mindblowing. Also keep an eye on Elon Musk who is about to solve machine vision (and with neuralink he is preparing for the singularity:-)).
The most important thing I grabbed from here today is to be complimentary to the machines and not fear to fall behind them or try to move ahead of them due to insecurity, I appreciate such guidance and predictions from an experienced person and i subscribed to this channel not just for the language aspect but for freelance in general, as you mentioned AI is going to affect almost all the industries, this was an important video to watch in general, I'm glad I subscribed!
To comment on the topic of whether machine translation will completely replace translators, let me give you an example. Imagine you do not understand a single character of Chinese. You can still use the machine translation though. However, you have absolutely no way of checking whether the text makes sense or not, you are completely dependent on that machine. Now, do you really trust that machine so much that the translation is flawless? Would you just go ahead and send this text to your potential customer in China regarding a billion-dollar deal? This is like closing your eyes before jumping off a cliff hoping there is water down there. I believe that in this case, it will always be necessary to have a human check the text. Human translators will rather reorientate to proofreaders. I am a native Czech speaker, however, I am not confident to write a long important text without having anybody check my mistakes. Even if I could do this, I still would have somebody else do it for me as I do not want to waste my time writing anything. I just want to focus on my business and outsource the communication to other people be it in a foreign language or in my mother tongue. It is really not about knowing the language, this is much more complex. Some people have an innate skill of superb oral or written communication with people. Professional approach and communication with other people will always be a great added human value that will hardly be replaced by a machine. In the future, human work might actually be more precious than now. Take handbags, for example. Sure, you can order a bag for 50 dollars from a mass production, made by a machine in a factory. However, people are still willing to buy a super expensive HAND-MADE handbag because they see value in this. In another case scenario, having a gorgeous, human professional interpreter at your company's conference will definitely stand out in the future among the boring, same-looking, repetitive robots produced by Apple or Amazon, which everyone can afford. By investing in a human professional, although the job could be done by a machine, you will present your status.
Hi Walter, I definitely agree with almost all you said here :) thanks a bunch for the huge comment, really insightful! Especially the handbag comparison is an interesting though experiment. Intrinsic value can be an interesting thing, I see it now again with the whole NFT craze, people are actually willing to overpay for intrinsic value (which you see in fashion all the time). Not sure if this compares to the notion of translation though. The only thing that I would argue - well it can't really be argued, that's the point - is that we can't even comprehend how language processing might evolve in the future. It is perfectly possible that humans will be implanted with a chip that provides them with infinite language knowledge, who knows. Of course this is a concept far in the future, but with the speed of how technology is evolving, it might not even be that far of a stretch. This is why I struggle with notions like "human translators will ALWAYS be needed". It might very well be that they are not. Imagine if NMT can be trained with a large enough set of individualized content, who knows what it will be able to do in 50 years. But I agree, humans will always be needed in the language industry :) that was my point in the video.

That often will just be translation, though. If an MT messes up a sentence, the whole thing is liable to require retranslation. It can't be done by anyone except someone who has the skills of a pro translator. A simple editor or checker can ensure the target language is natural or they can check the meaning of the source language, but only a translator can do both. It's the inspiration function that machines will be taking over.
I said now we can win, but in the future I’m really not sure. I feel like now translation companies are only looking for proofreaders for machine translated materials

I was feeling scared about the future and was close to abandon (the translation) ship, but your video made me look at the current state of things from another, more realistic and positive perspective. I am specialized in localization and all pessimistic views were swaying me to give up before I even started to get my first clients as a freelance translator. That is a very interesting topic, and yes, I think 'translator' might not be needed much in the near future, but these same people will still have a place within the market; AI simply cannot do everything. For example, sometimes you might have a sentence that is in face value has one meaning, but underneath has another one, and that is the meaning the reader is meant to get. A machine simply won't get that, and you as a translator has the choice to either make that meaning explicate or not if you deem it appropriate as somethings just do not communicate across cultures. Moreover, texts that are more creative - poetry, stylized fiction, etc... - are highly subjective, so a machine is not exactly ideal no matter how good it is.

They could possibly set the base language as English for to make AI recognize algorithms easier and connect all of the languages together by English. All they have to do is to hire some proffesional translators who have studied english translation and literature from all around the world.
They don't care about poetry..they target simple things like very fast translation at the same time as the other person speaks which no human brain can ever comprehend

Machine learning can’t beat out an actual human translator. Even if machine learning could do it all they would need human eyes to check over it. So there would be no point for the machines to translate.

Even if there is general AI, the "suddenly going crazy" feature of AI may not change. And this is why it öay always need an expert human eye to check it. I mean, even accountants and cashiers are not replaced. Translation is much more sensitive and mistake-intolerant.
An AI ranslation will never be as good as an human translation. However, customers will not accept to pay what it really costs. Unfortunately both agencies and direct clients do not value the service anymore. I'm currently leaving the industry.
I'm seeing the opposite actually, I'm seeing customers coming back saying that they overestimated the AI hype and simply can't afford to base their localization on machines.

Now I know there’s a ton of work out there so machines are great to provide automated translations for humans, yet as you said it, we will have to focus on a small part of translating and I don’t think I want to invest 4 years in college to fulfill just a 🤏🏼 of the work. Besides how much money can one really make with just translating? Imo one would have to run an entire company with translators of 50 different languages to be somewhat profitable for now and the future. What are your thoughts on the financial side of this career? And what are your thoughts on the amount of effort translators (meaning humans) will have to put in themselves?
@@Israelgalivjan You definitely don't need 50 language pairs to be somewhat profitable. I only work in 2 language pairs and I'm profitable for years. Of course it depends what you expect in terms of revenue, but if 80k to 100k a year is profitable to you, then you can definitely achieve that. Bear in mind that you don't have to offer "only translating" there is a lot you can offer in the language sector. But of course I understand your reservations. And if you have them, it's better to steer clear from the industry. But if you are like me and like the challenge and like to adapt to whatever is coming, then why not go for it. Keep in mind that these challenges will hit every single sector sooner or later.

well,, to begin with, I'm 87, so for what regards me, I don't think I'll have to worry much - by the way, back in the 1970"s (half a century ago!) I remember I was walking by Jiron Lampa - (Lima, Peru downtown) and was feeling despondent, as wherever you went in those days there were computers menacing us poor workers. Many felt they would end up disemployed. But it was otherwise. At that time I was working as a translator and was a student of civil engineering. Big engineering companies used to hire college students for calculations. I was working in the Marginal Highway in the Peruvian Jungle and surveyors had measured angles every 5 meters or so along about 1000 kilometers; so we had to calculate sines and cosines of each angle. We had to use a slide rule (look in a history book if you want to know what slide rule is, unless you are very old) - we had the trigonometrical functions with 8 decimals - the slide just gave 3 and the remainder by trial and error in a mechanical calculator! However, nothing happened. Computers gave the results at the speed of light (which would have taken us weeks!) - So students lost that job, but in time lots of new jobs and professions appeared and we could forget the boring calculations. So I learned not to fear progress. I have kept up with the times. I utilize last generation equipment and work on a daily basis in Spnish-English-French-Italian-Latin. (sorry for German: I hate its 3 genders) . I think there is a limit for progress: If some day machines ousts workers, people will not have money to buy, so the great industries won't be able to sell anything. So, electronic-cybernetic-ultraautomatic, etc. giganting industry will backfire and corporations will have to hire employes who will have money to buy..... etc.
Wow!! Thanks for presenting such a balanced and optimistic view on this controversial topic. I totally agree with you - there's no point worrying about how things will turn out in the distant future. ANY job can be replaced by AI at any point! Everyone should be prepared to switch careers/ retrain in some capacity multiple times throughout their working lives and this is something to be embraced rather than feared. The content of this video is mindblowing for me particularly, and it is quite hard to comprehend all of it with the speed that you are speaking. I would like to give one suggestion for the Subtitles, if I may. Could you use some distinctive font, or capitalization, or a different background colour for the abbreviations that you mention numerous times throughout the video, please? The reason being is - it immediately drew my attention to those abbreviations. Still, the lines of the subtitles are disappearing too quickly for me to read the whole thing and understand what the actual abbreviation means. Or maybe explain those abbreviations first and put it somewhere on the screen like a fixed text so it would be visible the whole time. Great Content of the video as always! Keep up the good work!
Hi Marieta, thanks for the feedback! No, the subtitles are automatically generated. I then have to go through them and correct them and add punctuation and capitalization etc. once the video is out. I will do that when I get the time to :) Interesting to know that they are so important for the viewing experience, thanks for sharing, I will have them updated as soon as I can. BTW you can also turn down the speed of the video, don't know if you know that. Maybe try watching at 0.5s speed or 0.75s. You can change it in the video settings.
It boils down to how progress services humanity. It would be wonderful to see innovation like this done just to give to the world. The freeing up of those jobs could give communities the people/time/money saved to focus on the next area that needs the attention. And it has to come in time, be reliable and safe.
Great video as always. I have no doubt MT will replace our role, but not 'us'. We will just assume another role within this merged industry of language and IT. I didn't always feel that way, though. This terrified me when I was a translation major. But then again, our teachers would reassure us in the nost definitive way that, at least my language pair which is English-Turkish, it wouldn't happen for a very very long time. But look where we are now! Anyways, as a translator of 11 years, I have made my peace with that. Last but not least, I really love that in so many of your videos at this angle, the lamp shade looks like the golden RUclips plate. I don't know if that is a deliberate thing, but I really like it :)

Many jobs will disappear including that of translation. But human translators will remain. Because you cannot really capture the depth or complexity of the human soul through writing. You will always have people who will collaborate with human translators
It the same with farmers and plows. Tractors didn't replace farmers. They just made them more efficient. Their understanding and intuition are still needed, in fact technology simply took the toil out of their work while leaving the decision-making.

Currently I am working on a translation project from Amazon i.e. proof reading of MT. It sometimes makes me laugh to see the blunder in MT.

Many felt they would end up disemployed. But it was otherwise. At that time I was working as a translator and was a student of civil engineering. Big engineering companies used to hire college students for calculations. I was working in the Marginal Highway in the Peruvian Jungle and surveyors had measured angles every 5 meters or so along about 1000 kilometers; so we had to calculate sines and cosines of each angle. We had to use a slide rule (look in a history book if you want to know what slide rule is, unless you are very old) - we had the trigonometrical functions with 8 decimals - the slide just gave 3 and the remainder by trial and error in a mechanical calculator! However, nothing happened. Computers gave the results at the speed of light (which would have taken us weeks!) - So students lost that job, but in time lots of new jobs and professions appeared and we could forget the boring calculations. So I learned not to fear progress. I have kept up with the times. I utilize last generation equipment and work on a daily basis in Spnish-English-French-Italian-Latin. (sorry for German: I hate its 3 genders) . I think there is a limit for progress: If some day machines ousts workers, people will not have money to buy, so the great industries won't be able to sell anything. So, electronic-cybernetic-ultraautomatic, etc. giganting industry will backfire and corporations will have to hire employes who will have money to buy..... etc.

Wow!! Thanks for presenting such a balanced and optimistic view on this controversial topic. I totally agree with you - there's no point worrying about how things will turn out in the distant future. ANY job can be replaced by AI at any point! Everyone should be prepared to switch careers/ retrain in some capacity multiple times throughout their working lives and this is something to be embraced rather than feared. Hi Adrian, are you doing your own Subtitles for your videos? The content of this video is mindblowing for me particularly, and it is quite hard to comprehend all of it with the speed that you are speaking. I would like to give one suggestion for the Subtitles, if I may. Could you use some distinctive font, or capitalization, or a different background colour for the abbreviations that you mention numerous times throughout the video, please? The reason being is - it immediately drew my attention to those abbreviations. Still, the lines of the subtitles are disappearing too quickly for me to read the whole thing and understand what the actual abbreviation means. Or maybe explain those abbreviations first and put it somewhere on the screen like a fixed text so it would be visible the whole time. Great Content of the video as always! Keep up the good work!
Hi Marieta, thanks for the feedback! No, the subtitles are automatically generated. I then have to go through them and correct them and add punctuation and capitalization etc. once the video is out. I will do that when I get the time to :) Interesting to know that they are so important for the viewing experience, thanks for sharing, I will have them updated as soon as I can. BTW you can also turn down the speed of the video, don't know if you know that. Maybe try watching at 0.5s speed or 0.75s. You can change it in the video settings.

It boils down to how progress services humanity. It would be wonderful to see innovation like this done just to give to the world. The freeing up of those jobs could give communities the people/time/money saved to focus on the next area that needs the attention. And it has to come in time, be reliable and safe.

I have no doubt MT will replace our role, but not 'us'. We will just assume another role within this merged industry of language and IT.
I didn't always feel that way, though. This terrified me when I was a translation major. But then again, our teachers would reassure us in the nost definitive way that, at least my language pair which is English-Turkish, it wouldn't happen for a very very long time. But look where we are now! Anyways, as a translator of 11 years, I have made my peace with that.
Last but not least, I really love that in so many of your videos at this angle, the lamp shade looks like the golden RUclips plate. I don't know if that is a deliberate thing, but I really like it :)

Many jobs will disappear including that of translation. But human translators will remain. Because you cannot really capture the depth or complexity of the human soul through writing. You will always have people who will collaborate with human translators
It the same with farmers and plows. Tractors didn't replace farmers. They just made them more efficient. Their understanding and intuition are still needed, in fact technology simply took the toil out of their work while leaving the decision-making.
The only profession for humans in the future is being a streamer, having Only fans accounts, content creador, entertainment industry and coding 🙃
Don't underestimate the Virtual Streamers and Content Creators :D they are on the rise as well.
