    Hi Katie, firstly I'd like to thank you for all the work you do for us and it's been so so helpful, please never stop as you are making a real positive difference in people's lives. I have a question about dealing with thoughts that work on a pattern, for example looking at a photo of a person or even thinking of a person or anything related to them will trigger a thought that is simply an upsetting word. I have been letting it come in and disregarding, not engaging and basically ignoring it. This has been happening for a year since my OCD "started". The frequency varies depending on stress and anxiety levels and is worse when I'm having a bad day. This particular thought does not trigger anxiety anymore. I wonder if there is a better way to tackle this to try and break the association, is there any other ERP I could do in this situation? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    • @23katied
      @23katied  2 года назад +2

      Have you done any deliberate exposure work with this? By that I mean rather than just letting the thought be there actually go towards the thought - e.g get the kind of triggering photos and say the thought outloud while looking at the photo, record the word/thought and listen to it on loop for say 5 minutes at a time etc.

    I got OCD about contamination but I just see posts saying that people who got OCD about contamination have to wash their hands many times a day because they think this is not clean, they have fear of dirt; but I do not see any posts about my problem. I do not just scare that it is not clean. I always think about bad effects can come to me if I do not have compulsive actions. Can you help me with this? I am so confused and scared now. I do not know what to do next. The fears of those happenings seem very real and it haunts me every day, every hour. I am really tired.

    • @janehillen2771
      @janehillen2771 3 года назад

      I have contamination OCD and it can trigger with a thought that I touched something and then it goes on and tells me I might have touched and contaminated another thing from the first thing and then another thing and on and on so I spend hours trying to trace what I might have touched and cleaning it. ERP is unbelievably hard but it's the only way to decrease the thoughts and manage OCD. If you can, get a therapist who knows how to treat OCD with ERP, even for a little while. It will give you some good ideas about how to handle the triggers and help you understand how OCD works and why it's so very hard to cope with. RUclips also has some excellent programs with experts who discuss OCD in depth. Hope you can find help.

    • @23katied
      @23katied  3 года назад +4

      If you are choosing to let the thought be there when it randomly comes and not argue with it that is good anti-ocd behaviour - where you choose not to engage in the compulsions. If you want to do effective ERP you need to deliberately expose yourself to things that are likely to bring more thoughts and then continue practicing not engaging with the thoughts. Regarding the thoughts lingering the whole idea is to stop paying attention to the thoughts not to get them to go away, so if the thoughts are there it doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong it just means they are there - if you aren't trying to get rid of them or push them away why does it matter that they are there?

    What is the causation of OCD? Could it be a learnt behaviour and response? I can remember my first event in OCD. I was a child, about 7 years old. I was lying in bed and suddenly the thought came to me, was my heart still beating? So I got up and ran around my bedroom until I could feel it beating. The significant issue was that I had no idea that running would give me the effective response I was looking for. The assumed solution was independent of my then understanding and the beginning of 60 years of hell on earth.

    • @rickrobert9319

      Yes, me too, I starkly remember how it started, the very first event, I kept on checking again and again, then.. the dominos fell, sword and shield approach after that only, i.e. fighting it and living with it.

      Have heard amygdala is responsible for it, it’s in constant fight or flight state..
      So, can it be treated through surgery or operation ?, I mean just remove it and reattach it, kind of rebooting, I know it sounds stupid, but I can literally go to any length to get rid of this hell.

    • @janehillen2771
      @janehillen2771 3 года назад +1

      @@rickrobert9319 The amygdala is the primitive part of the brain. It's already gotten the scary thought before it goes to the younger, rational part of the brain which tells you that there's no need for alarm. By that time though, your body might have started to react to the amygdala and increased heart rate, breath and sweating so your body interprets the thought as a real danger. With OCD it's hard to backtrack and tell yourself everything is ok.

    - "It's my doctor's prescription"
    Seriously,
    I have a question about the blasphemous thoughts ERP. IT is so tricky because those ERPs are considered sins and one with this type of OCD does not wanna sin..It's even trickier because of the fear of punishment which may be LATER not instantaneous. I admire if you have time to reply this, as it is overwhelming..
    I heard someone says "we don't ask u to sin in this erp", So, it got more confusing whether the ERP being done is a "sin" or a "therapy"

Their was a tik tok saying how ignoring ocd was harmful and why. I was so confused because ignoring the thoughts actually helped me not care for them or engage with them. After seeing the tik tok it made me question if I was even recovering the right way. Any thoughts ?

      I would say: do not ignore OCD. That is not the same as ignoring thoughts. I mean OCD is the fact that you have intrusive thoughts, but you can help your situation by how you relate to those thoughts. Hope this helps! I myself am only at the beginning of understanding how to help myself.
