At last a simple no-nonsense step-by-stap instructive video about a problem more people than you would imagine, encounter when taking their weapon apart without (like your truly) first checking the correct sequence and correct position of the various parts. Great video! Thanks a lot Dan!
I had given up on my VZ24 bolt for years... I had no clue on how to correct this... Thank you,,, after watching this video it took me ten seconds to correct this problem... you are a hero...
I so just did this learning how to clean my Mauser! Thank you so much. Thanks for thinking about how things can go wrong with the newbies. You saved me $$ and a trip to the gunsmith.
Saved my butt, haha. As said by another commentor, there a lot of assembly/disassembly videos where everything goes right. We need more like yours where something goes wrong, but there are easy to follow fixes. Thanks Dan.
Saved my bacon. Went to the range with a couple of friends when my bolt didn't want to fit back in when someone took it out for some reason. Thank you for the upload.
I don't know if you are still active, but thanks for the video. I got a M48 Yugo, and on my first cleaning I somehow did this exact problem to my bolt. Thank you for helping with a problem 11 years after your video upload date.
Thank you for this. I was messing around with the mauser bolt for the rifle I use at work for polar bear protection, and triggered the firing pin. I thought I could fix it myself without help but couldn’t. Your video saved me. Thank you.
VERY HELPFUL!! Like the others wrote below you are a true hero!!! While examining a Mauser custom rifle and its bolt yesterday at a local gun store, my friend twisted the bolt and caused it to rotate so that the cocking piece fell into that recess. End result was we spent a solid 30 minutes standing at the gun store counter unsuccessfully trying to figure out how to fix the bolt. It was embarrassing as hell to have to tell the gun store what we had done.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I made this dumb mistake just now, trying to dissemble my very first Mauser for the very first time. Really mashed up my thumbs trying to do it with my bare hands. You've saved me a lot of ass-pain.
Thank YOU! Been working trying to 'correct' my 'mistakes' for 24 hours! No vice? Vice Grips", and pull! Thank you!!!! The person I got my "Customized" Mauser from never told me anything about it and ALL the springs in the bolt are extra strong! Why would that be? Give yourself a couple of POB's!!! (pat-on-back)
Thank you so much for making this video! The first time I removed the bolt from my mauser I made the mistake of not turning the safety to the on position and thus I only got the cocking piece partially unscrewed, as a result I was not able to put my bolt back in the rifle properly when I realized the mistake I had made and tried to remedy it, I thought I might be screwed but fortunately I found you're video which allowed me to easily fix this mistake! I don't know what I would have done without it! Thanks again!
Thank you for this VERY helpful advice. Amazing how a is responsible for saving people big $$$$$$$$$$$$, not to mention aggravation. You're a good man!!!!!!!!
I know this is from 2009 but it was a savior for me in 2016. Guess who forgot to move the put the safety in the proper position. No names mentioned BUT IT WAS ME. Glad you were there to
Thank you very much, your a real help. I screw up my dissasembly and without your advice it would be becoming a NOT CHEAP DEAL at my Gunsmith. Everybody tell you how to do it wright but few think at those who screw it up. THANKS AGAIN.
Thanks a million for posting this! I was working on a mauser bolt for the first time and this happened to me. Thanks to your video I was able to fix it in minutes and now I know what to do. Thanks again friend.
Thank you for the kind words, I am glad my vids helped you and others out. Parts are cheap here and some times by chance you come across a good action to buit upon. After-market parts manufactures here in the US have all kids of cool stuff, stocks, barrels, triggers, safites, scope bases. Mausers are fun to build and as of now I have presented 2 rifles to my nieces as birthday gifts. Why not pass on the shooting sports to the next generation.
Thanks for help. Just bought it yesterday and accidentally hit safety to fire as I pulled out the bolt. Other videos droned on but u got right to the point.
Thank you so much for this video. I just got done cleaning it and I was testing The bold and apparently the ball you screw off to get to the frying pan wasn't completely on very well and when I brought back the bolt apparently it was stuck like you should before for a minute I thought I ruined my Mauser thank you again for this video you save me a lot of worry.😁👍
Thank you so much for your very easy and straight forward video, I was about to walk away from my mauser out of frustration which I hate doing with any firearm when it is not completely reassembled. Your video literally saved me from getting in a really shitty mood. GOD BLESS
chhers mate this happend to me the other day and as a new owner of this type of rifle i was stumped. so this worked perfectly. just one other tip. the safety can operate both left and right. but only one way will let you fire when turned off. Unless i just have a slight;y old worn gun. Cheers
omg thank you i was like what just happened. im trying to fix up a mauser my grandpa was assembling but unfortunatly he died before he couyld finish it. again thank you
Good video. This just happened to me last week. Just couldn't figure out how to repair it. However I have a friend who is a master gunsmith...so no problem. If I saw this vid sooner I could have fixed it myself. Thanks.
woo hoo metal god 7 is back shooting again. glad your back on track and keep shooting. i just got back from shooting my 7mm WSM i built on a 98 mauser. :o)
I don't know if it is just my rifle. But if I lock the bolt closed like this, all I have to do is grab the rear of the bolt, and with a little force, I can twist the cocking peace up the ramp to its cocked position by hand.
A 6 inch long loop of a good fishing twine, secured to a spike driven into a bench, and looped around the sear engagement part of the cocking piece as shown works great, and will not mar bolt parts....great video....I learned My method from an old gunsmithing DBI book....watch out for them in used book stores....forever information....
I just got a Turkish Mauser today and made this exact mistake. I thought I was the only one. Damn am I lucky I stumbled across this because I was about to take it to the gun shop to get it "fixed" just so I could clean the damn thing
My bolt on my 1893 Turk is different. It is impossible to have my safety straight up and be able to remove the bolt at the same time. I have only figured out how to take my bolt head off. How do I take my bolt apart? It is straight handle
I just purchased a Surplus M48 and the safety is stuck the whole way to the right, I can't get it to move and I haven't had a chance to remove the bolt from the rifle yet. Any Ideas?
I thought I was screwed. Had to put a rug down on my desk first but after watching your video I was able to compress the firing pin spring enough to get the flag back to the correct position. Now I know why everyone says not to disassemble the bolt without the flag on safe.
thank you for this, but instead of the vice or table i used the mauser barrel to do so. thank you again for this otherwise i would have never been able to fix it!
I would not recommend pushing down on what you call the cocking piece, especially metal on metal. That is where the sear holds the firing pin back until you pull the trigger. That part is part of your sear and if you were to change the angle of that you could end up with a dangerous gun or a gun that requires too much force to pull the trigger.
The trigger mechanism of the K98k is kind of crappy anyway, so a little damage might not really matter at all, but you are right. When that mistake happens, it might be more useful to use hard plastic instead of a vice.
I purchased a used Mauser rifle , I'm going to try what you explained , the other question is mine doesn't have that safety . Do I need that missing safety or does mine not come with one , I cannot find information on this rifle , thank you for your time
If your rifle is a 98-Mauser and the safety is missing than yes you need one. But some 98-Mausers have been up graded to have no safety on the bolt (bolt shroud that has no hole fir the safety) these rifles use a safety built into the trigger.
This is very helpful. My only concern with your second method is you are applying pressure on the cocking piece where the sear engages. If you mar this surface you could affect the trigger pull. Personally I would stick with your first method.
This can be done without using a vice. It can be rotated back into position just by using your hands. It'll take some force, but it will turn without worrying about marring the metal with a vice.
Not all heroes wear capes. You buddy are a hero.

Saved my bacon. Went to the range with a couple of friends when my bolt didn't want to fit back in when someone took it out for some reason.
Thank you for the upload.
This helped a lot. was actually really easy to do once you know how but without this video i was screwed. thanks
Thanks. I was starting to lose hope until I found your video. Great job!

Glad to help out
You’ve solved a not so simple problem for those of us who did this to our first Mauser. Thank you
VERY HELPFUL!! Like the others wrote below you are a true hero!!! Thank you SO VERY much! I was totally lost as to how to fix this and your video explained it perfectly.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I made this dumb mistake just now, trying to dissemble my very first Mauser for the very first time. Really mashed up my thumbs trying to do it with my bare hands. You've saved me a lot of ass-pain.
Just did this and a minute in you showed me how to fix it. Thanks, man

You have no idea how much i am appreciative of this video. Thank you.
Glad to help out.
Thank you! I'd spent the last half hour wresting with the bolt after stripping my M48 down to remove all the Cosmoline. Your video saved the day!
A week of going around in circles solved in 5 seconds after your video. You sir deserve a medal
Thank you so much for making this video! Cool. Glad your ready to shoot now. Enjoy.
I know this is from 2009 but it was a savior for me in 2016. Guess who forgot to move the put the safety in the proper position. No names mentioned BUT IT WAS ME. Glad you were there to
Thank you so much sir. 11 years and still helped me
Your welcome.....shot stright.

Thank you! Very easy to follow instructions I could not find anywhere else.
Been a gun guy for a long time but just bought my first old mauser.. I'm favorite-ing this video now because I'll need it soon, thanks!
Just used your advice today on my Turkish 1944 Ankara K Kale. Thanks a billion!
Glad to help out.
Awesome video, saved my cosmoline cleaning project!
Glad to here you are rocking and rolling with your new mauser. Fun rifles those are.
Thank you for the kind words, I am glad my vids helped you and others out. Parts are cheap here and some times by chance you come across a good action to buit upon. Dude, you just saved me! I was freaking out that I had perhaps, DESTROYED my K98. I owe you a pint.
Thank you sir. Saved me from using profanity after the mess up. Awesome you helped.
You saved my ass. I watch other videos they never say not to do that leaving out important information. Thanks.
Would have taken me hours to figure this out by myself, best case scenario. You just saved my evening!
Dan you are the man! So easy when you know how to do fix it.
Thank you! Every year when I strip my .450 this happens to me! Have saved this video now!
Hey tell your friends its fixed lets go shooting.
Thanks for help. Just bought it yesterday and accidentally hit safety to fire as I pulled out the bolt. Other videos droned on but u got right to the point.
Thanks the only video on here that has a direct solution to the problem
Thank you for making this! My first Mauser and could not figure out how to correct this issue.
Thx my man. You made it easy for me-I had that issue. Stabilized on a bench and got it resolved as you show. Whew!! You rock. Shoot em straight.
Thanks man. I was about to put my bolt in trash.... You saved it...
You sir, are a legend. If I could shake your hand right now I would.
Thank you so much for your very easy and straight forward video, I was about to walk away from my mauser out of frustration which I hate doing with any firearm when it is not completely reassembled. Your video literally saved me from getting in a really shitty mood.
GOD BLESS
And on the 7th day God gave us Dan!!!! Mega super help for a first time mauser cleaning mistake - THANK YOU BROTHER!!!!
13 years old and this video just rescued my rear
chhers mate this happend to me the other day and as a new owner of this type of rifle i was stumped. so this worked perfectly. just one other tip. the safety can operate both left and right. but only one way will let you fire when turned off. Unless i just have a slight;y old worn gun. Cheers

Thank you for this advice. I managed to create this mishap and now know how to fix it.
Brother you just saved me and my unfired m48! Big thanks!!
Good video. This just happened to me last week. Just couldn't figure out how to repair it. However I have a friend who is a master gunsmith...so no problem. If I saw this vid sooner I could have fixed it myself. Thanks.
Thanks, saved me some time and frustration. Put the safety on before taking the bolt out... But if you don't..
Got my rifle up and running.

Just exactly the way I screwed mine up, thanks for the help!
Now that you are back on track...

Thanks man! I just bought a mauser that had this issue when I bought it.
woo hoo metal god 7 is back shooting again. glad your back on track and keep shooting. i just got back from shooting my 7mm WSM i built on a 98 mauser. :o)

Thank you, i own a turkish Mauser with a broken (messed up) safety, it took me a while
@hankster1993 Be sure and use some Q-tips for those hard to reach places. Good reliable rifles those Mausers are.
Espen thank you for the kind comment. enjoy your rifle and keep shooting.
Thanks for the info. I goofed up and you helped me fix up my f***-up
Glad to help you out please watch all the other videos.
Like the others, thanks. I did not know how to fix this error on my part. My first Mauser and I am taking breaking it down to clean it all up.
Thank you!!! After watching a poorly made disassembly video this happened to me.
My bolt on my 1893 Turk is different. It is impossible to have my safety straight up and be able to remove the bolt at the same time. I have only figured out how to take my bolt head off. How do I take my bolt apart? It is straight handle

you saved my life. thank you
You are the man. Thanks so much, had no clue what to do.
I actually have this problem right now and I can get the safety on but I can't rotate to get the bolt to disassemble. What am I doing wrong?
I thought I was screwed. Had to put a rug down on my desk first but after watching your video I was able to compress the firing pin spring enough to get the flag back to the correct position. Now I know why everyone says not to disassemble the bolt without the flag on safe.
Thanks, so simple but it took your video to figure it out.
Dan, you are indeed the man. I was ready to throw my fucking bolt through the window. THANK YOU.
ok and what do ya do if the action slips off the back of the bolt
thank you for this, but instead of the vice or table i used the mauser barrel to do so. thank you again for this otherwise i would have never been able to fix it!
what do you do if that piece pops off
thank you guy you saved us days and hours of google time plz make more videos
Thank you for making this video.you sir are a hero
Oh man you are awesome!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!! Thank you so much for posting this. You saved me!!!!

Another viewer helped. Glad to be at your service. Maybe I should make a video on how I build a rifle.
I purchased a used Mauser rifle , I'm going to try what you explained , the other question is mine doesn't have that safety . Do I need that missing safety or does mine not come with one , I cannot find information on this rifle , thank you for your time

@LostarIshaKa I did the samething. Glad I found this!
This is very helpful. My only concern with your second method is you are applying pressure on the cocking piece where the sear engages. If you mar this surface you could affect the trigger pull. Personally I would stick with your first method.
THANK YOU! Still helpful in 2023, 14 years later.
Happy Range Day
Thank you very much for your video. You have maked my life easier, ja, ja, ja…
Xavi from Barcelona
Oh my god -thank you!!!!! Be sure to enjoy your weekend sir!
This can be done without using a vice. It can be rotated back into position just by using your hands. It'll take some force, but it will turn without worrying about marring the metal with a vice.
You're my hero. Yor saved me
