Fun Fact! When the UK Navy used these on their carriers their catapults were too short and so 1m was added to the length of the front landing gear to point the plane up a bit more. Saw one at the fleet air arm museum in Devon and it looked so funny lol.
This ended up requiring existing carriers equipped with Phantoms to install special water sprayers to prevent the extreme heat of the Spey engines from causing catastrophic damage to the flight deck
my man sees the faintest smudge on his screen and is like "mig 2, 3 oclock, poorly maintained aft flap, 1/4 tank of fuel, looks like... yup, looks like enemy pilot had bacon for breakfast. Fox 2 away."
And you can absolutely feel those J-79s when you light the cans in full AB; it's like you're being launched from a light speed slingshot. And that howl is orgasmic. Genuinely frightening how fast it picks up speed; the rate of climb is just freakish, like you're being pushed from behind by a massive hand.
I think I’ve said to myself “we’re at VERY low fuel” every time I’ve flown this sexy beast. Forced me to learn “boom” refueling just so I can play future campaigns
Here's a tip you may or may not know. You have to manually switch the fuel transfer on external tanks on the left hand console. Center position is transfer off. Up position is transfer wing tanks. Down position is transfer centerline. The F4 refuels from the external tanks rather than feeds the engines from them unlike in later jets
In defense of the AIM-7 it was designed to shoot down soviet bombers over Europe, not migs over South East Asia. The Nam was a conflict the sparrow wasn't designed for
AIM-7: pulls off the tightest turn ever, and blasts the wrong target Fu: hops in the back of the jet with the magical AIM-7's for his own safety Other AIM-7's: Well, now we're not doing it 😤
Fun fact: The boresight mode has three scan areas that are selected with the pinky switch. If you are in radar it scans right, heat it scans centre and guns it scans left. The nosewheel steering button will lock whatever is in front of that selected area.
I visited a german military aviation museum today. I saw many great things but the F4 was under reconstruction, this was kind of sad because I was excited to see it. But now I look at my homepage and see a Drewski F4 video. What a lovely surprise! Great stuff man :D
10:40 lovely to see that dcs also lets its radar missiles just track *way* off from the radar lock to hit a closer target! just like war thunder! how convenient. :D also drewski, the reason the sparrows weren’t playing nice in the low alt shots is probably because the F-4E variant is too old to have the later radars with look-down shoot-down, so it doesn’t like targets being near the ground. you might bring that up later in the vid, but I figure I’d edit this in now. Also! 27:28 you’re not getting a tone because your sidewinders are old gen too, and aren’t sensitive enough to pick up a heat signature from the front aspect. the engine plume has to be unobstructed, for the most part.
Yeah the APQ-120 is a pulse radar with basically no filtering. You really have to know where the enemy plane is beforehand otherwise you’ll wont be able to see them with the radar.
When firing boresight with the “flood mode” you need to have the WSO in the back (or jump back there yourself) to set the Aspect Switch to the proper aspect for the sparrow to track.
Most likely he locked his buddy there because he used the nws lock in cage mode, but he had radar missiles selected which scans to the right of center, exactly where his buddy was.
The whole look down is unreliable thing doesn't really matter once the radar has STT. This is because it can filter out any clutter that isn't at the same range as the target. It's just the initial search that struggles.
Its realistic tho, the radar is basically a flood light, and for the less advanced ones this was a common thing. They had a pretty terrible kill ratio in nam as well. Probably why we're using AIM-9s to this day but AIM-7s have long been fazed out
When I finally get a flight rig, I will fly exclusively this jet. Dad worked on F-4E (and helped upgrade them to the J's) in the Marines way back when. Gonna try to get a paint scheme for his unit.
Dude it's been so fun to fly it! It was so worth the wait. I got into DCS this past winter pretty much specifically because of the release of the F-4E Phantom II. It's going to take me a while to master, especially with my ADHD, but for the same reason, it's one of the most interesting and easily the most satisfying planes for me to learn and master so the hyperfocus has been extra sweet. Your woes with the AIM 7 resonate so deeply with me lol.
The "RADAR/ HEAT/ GUNS" switch also controls the search pattern when in CAA mode, being "Left/Center/Right". When you entered the CAA mode, the radar was looking to the left, and not where yout nose was pointing. I also need to say that I loved the video!
The reason for the dihedral wings and why the F-4 looks as if someone stepped on the drawings. McDonnell placed the engines low to make it easy to just drop them out the bottom during replacement The elevons needed to be placed above that, to keep them out of the engine exhaust At high AoA the main wing wake would interfere with the elevons and make them less effective With the large anhedral (down sweep) the outboard part of the elevons are below the wing wake at high AoA --> better control anhedral makes an aircraft less stable in roll, the solution is to compensate by main wing dihedral, about 3° should do it The fuselage and wing box was already designed, rather than redo that, the engineers gave the outboard panels (would fold up for carrier parking) 12° The humpback canopy came after the first test flights, to improve visibility Also, we need more Drewski does DCS, please.
Do not try to out-turn mig-21s in the F4, go for the vertical as much as possible. Also locking on to targets lower than you, when you're close to ground is not recommended, as the older radar systems struggle differing grpund clutter and targets.
2:31 To this day that remains my favorite clip from this channel. The fact you can get a frame perfect close up of it always cracks me up (and fills me with fear)
to sum up the video: "this flying barn is really cool, it fights soviet pencils that spin fast, whoever the pencils are now extinct because the usa created god incarnate with wings and russian avation cannot exist because the f-15 said so."
This is one of my favorite jets. I was stationed at Spangdahlem Airbase in Germany from 87-90, even though I was army (short range air defense) and they had F4 wild weasel teamed with F16s. It was incredible to see these muscular looking fighters fly. They put Army barracks right next to the runway, thank you Air Force but, there’s no escaping the noise from those things. Amazing design.
I truly believe this was the single best aircraft we ever created in terms of how long it stayed relevant and how much longer it _could_ have stayed relevant with updates. It was the original Joint Strike Fighter, being used by the Navy, Air Force, and Marines at one time or another. It was a very capable dogfighter for its era, and later a very capable bomb hauler. It was a robust and rugged airframe that stood the test of time and still had a lot of potential life even when they retired it.
After teaching middle school science for a year, my grandfather decided he wanted to fly the Phantom, and he did just that flying many missions night bombing trucks along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos, close air support to support the marines during the battle of Khe Sanh, and bombing targets in North Vietnam.
I may be wrong, but it seemed most of the AIM-7s didnt track because you didn't lock your target for enough time to send tracking information to the AIM-7. Jester should typically count to 4 and yell shoot before you can release it.
Heatblur is love, Heatblur is life. Can't wait for them to release the Eurofighter Typhoon. Just a shame it won't have Pirate IRST, as the only other planes we have with IRST are the Flanker series, and they're not full fidelity.

The AIM-7 going after a friendly is the most warthunder thing to happen. Missiles locking onto an enemy that then decide to beeline into the nearest friendly unit within line of sight
Sadly, that was extremely common and realistic. Aim 7's were notoriously crap. Probably the worst missile ever made, definitely the worst one America ever made.
In the early model F-4s, you were only allowed to use rudder to turn when at any significant Angle of Attack. Using ailerons would cause the aircraft to yaw in the opposite direction that you were trying to roll. Some model of F-4s actually had the stick lock (left to right) during high angles of attack so you had to use the rudder. Later models with leading edge slats rectified this problem to a degree but it never fully went away.
Fun Fact: 445 Air Force Phantom fighter-bombers were lost, 370 in combat and 193 of those over North Vietnam (33 to MiGs, 30 to SAMs and 307 to AAA). The RF-4C was operated by four squadrons, and of the 83 losses, 72 were in combat including 38 over North Vietnam (seven to SAMs and 65 to AAA).
Man! This is the first time I've ever seen any of your videos and when I started watching this one, I thought to myself, "well... I've got to leave in 5 minutes so I'll just take a quick look..." That was 40 minutes ago, LOL. I missed my intended appointment because I just couldn't stop watching this clip!! Seriously, I'm having a hard time believing that you only got in this sim's plane 2 days ago but if that's what you swear to then I guess it's true. Still, you flew this plane like you've been flying it for years in real life! I'm not a 'shoot em up' gamer. I'm a flight sim hobbyist and before MSFS, I flew FSX for almost 10 years. I have flown a short hour or so in DCS. It was back in 2016/2017 and at the time, I think it was a UH-1C. However, as much as I liked it, I just didn't have the time to dedicate to learning all about the weapon & targeting systems. I mean, it just seemed like I'd have to spend days reading one manual after another before I could even think about starting an engine and I had other things to do. I couldn't use all my free time that I had for a flight sim, sitting in the cockpit and trying to memorize the systems and the "Do's from the Don'ts". Hence, I went back to the simpler, (yet, still challenging), non-violent flight sim platforms. One of these days, I'm going to have to get back to DCS and start applying myself because it is probably the best and most realistic of the sims. Thanks again for a great and entertaining video! Rich
There's a Russian band called Chizh that made a song about the Phantom and it's so good, it's sung from the POV of an F-4 pilot from Texas. Sidenote it's really weird hearing a Russian sing about his home in Texac.
27:19 when you launched that missile, the mig had just gone into a hard climb and was looping towards you in clear sky. Turning that hard, he probably wasn't tail aspect anymore, maybe rear or beam. Personally, given the clear sky and changing aspect, I would've gone with a rear or wide speedgate. Either way, couldn't have hurt to ripple off another one. Great video though, the phantom is definitely a tricky bird to get right, especially from the back!
30:06 that’s 450 pounds, not 45. Note that the gauge says “LBS x 10”. Also, not that it was relevant here, but that gauge does not include the fuel in drop tanks (hence the “internal” label)
3:10 wait the F4 was replaced by the f15? I thought it was replaced by the F14 tomcat.... what even is airplane replacement where you have 3-4 different aircraft all performing pretty much the same role but with slight differences
My favorite aircraft ever, the era it dominated was so interesting. I have been so happy seeing all the F-4 content the last couple weeks and finally going to have time this weekend to boot up my new favorite DCS module 😁
i could not be any happier that heatblur is the one to create the f4, they are by far the best group making modules for dcs, even better than ED themselves. They've introduced the most unique and anticipated planes and they're currently developing the eurofighter as well and something tells me if we ever see anything like a gripen its gonna be from them. The best thing about heatblur is that while they may delay their modules quite a bit, they always deliver an almost, if not completely finished module. The viggen is a very good and unique vehicle that introduced a lot of mechanics to the game and same for the f14. The f4 is feature complete and one of the most detailed vehicles in the game.
Currently in my vocational training as an aircraft/engine mecanic at the german military and we still learn with the J79 and the F4, its alot of fun tho the engine is a shit load of pipes and tubes. The only electric part on the engine is the ignition box
Dude! Ever read or listen to “The Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club”? When you accidentally tailpipe your wingman… that sort of thing happened irl! Insane that the game has such immersive realism. The same chapter also mentions several perfect growls where the sparrow either drops like a stone or never leaves the pylon of the phantom. Anyway, great video per usual.
"Well thanks buddy, at least I can get retired on disability now," is the most Jester quote I've ever heard.
"oh great, in need the crew chief to remove the seat cushion from my asshole" - jester's lines are fucking gold
That line was amazing haha
Dude the “Leading distributor of MiG parts across Southeast Asia” line was so cold I love it
There's a reason that line was used extensively in the Phantom's marketing

0:26 Don’t forget about the radar, there’s nothing like the F4 to absolutely destroy your FPS performance
The reason for the dihedral wings and why the F-4 looks as if someone stepped on the drawings.
McDonnell placed the engines low to make it easy to just drop them out the bottom during replacement
The elevons needed to be placed above that, to keep them out of the engine exhaust
At high AoA the main wing wake would interfere with the elevons and make them less effective
With the large anhedral (down sweep) the outboard part of the elevons are below the wing wake at high AoA --> better control
anhedral makes an aircraft less stable in roll, the solution is to compensate by main wing dihedral, about 3° should do it
The fuselage and wing box was already designed, rather than redo that, the engineers gave the outboard panels (would fold up for carrier parking) 12°
The humpback canopy came after the first test flights, to improve visibility
Also, we need more Drewski does DCS, please.
Shooting down the wingman like that was straight out of the Simpsons 🤣
I was rolling on the floor when I figured out what happened!
Do not try to out-turn mig-21s in the F4, go for the vertical as much as possible.
Also locking on to targets lower than you, when you're close to ground is not recommended, as the older radar systems struggle differing grpund clutter and targets.
I really like the breaks for a little comentating in this video.

At 7:15 I was shocked to see my old squadrons patch. Thanks for making me smile.
thank your for service!
No because the laugh at 11:35 was drew actually going insane learning this game, RIP to our boy
Fun Fact:
445 Air Force Phantom fighter-bombers were lost, 370 in combat and 193 of those over North Vietnam (33 to MiGs, 30 to SAMs and 307 to AAA).
Rich
1:10 MOBIUS 1 MENTIONED!!!
i love dcs content from you so much❤❤❤ thank you drewski
6:15 Jester talking sh!t will never get old, lmao.
took you long enough to make a DCS video i was waiting so long
I love watching your content, the quality is clearly here ! A huge thanks you for this from France !
My grandfather worked on the engines of the f4 phantoms during Vietnam
Found your video from the Polygon article and I love your positive vibe and killer editing. Subbed, looking forward to more!
There's a Russian band called Chizh that made a song about the Phantom and it's so good, it's sung from the POV of an F-4 pilot from Texas.
Sidenote it's really weird hearing a Russian sing about his home in Texac.
5:38 good clip breuh good clip
AirForceProud95 would be absolutely disgusted by that landing lmao
AFCS is the autopilot bro. It's similar to the Harrier. The enable just holds the current attitude. The 3 switches above is for the SAS.
I really hope the next Top Gun will be about Maverick's dad who flew f4s in Vietnam
As a veteran DCS pilot, I instantly got why the celebration music at the manual pop up in game. Lovely
3:10 wait the F4 was replaced by the f15? I thought it was replaced by the F14 tomcat.... what even is airplane replacement where you have 3-4 different aircraft all performing pretty much the same role but with slight differences
You do know the f4 was used by all branches right? So it was replaced by every fourth gen fighter that came out in the late 70s/ early 80s.
F-4 Phantom. The ORIGINAL Joint Strike Fighter. They don't make 'em like they used to, anymore.
That was a crazy ending, genuinely didn't expect you to make it lmao
Thank you for including the landing at the end! It's the best part of these flying sims!
Currently in my vocational training as an aircraft/engine mecanic at the german military and we still learn with the J79 and the F4, its alot of fun tho the engine is a shit load of pipes and tubes. The only electric part on the engine is the ignition box
same here in the Netherlands but with NF5's. Exactly the same principle
@@flick_shot_5625 Id like to say "same here" but I cant. I applied to an aircraft mecanic school and if im lucky I might get in.
This is AWESOME - Now all we need is the INTRUDER...proper 'Nam re-enactments to come! Great life lesson btw!
Damn fine memories…flew the F-4E in 3TFS at Clark Ab Philippines 1984-87
Thank you for bringing up Mobius 1, literally the first aircraft game I played and being introduced to the F-4 was something special to me
