- Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet each won acclaim as teenagers. Ronan was 13 when she earned an Oscar nom for “Atonement,” while Winslet was 17 when she burst onto the scene in Peter Jackson’s “Heavenly Creatures.” In their new films, both use accents that are not their own. Ronan headlines “Brooklyn,” playing an Irish girl who immigrates to New York in the 1950s. Winslet disappears behind a wig, glasses and a Polish accent for “Steve Jobs” to portray Joanna Hoffman, a friend and adviser to the Apple founder.

I spotted Saoirse in a bar in Edinburgh this past August called CC Blooms, after just submitting my masters thesis earlier that day . Her back was to me at the bar and I knew immediately.. holy shit that is HER. To this day I do not know how I was able to spot her from behind in a dim bar... I was standing about 3 ft from her and interrupted... " are you saoirse ronan? " and she said.. yeah! I couldn't believe it! We chatted for a good few minutes about my dissertation I was doing at the Uni of Edinburgh (regarding gender discrimination faced by women in senior leadership.) She stayed and chatted with me and listened about my research intently and was a COMPLETE gem. We parted ways and she gave me a genuine hug. I will not forget this run-in with her ever!!! And I am super happy I watch enough of these interviews to know how to pronounce her name properly LOL. It was the ultimate way to conclude my masters degree.

She's speaking the way that she thinks Dubs speak (she's not one herself) and the result is that she ends up sounding like a caricature of a Dub, making exaggerated sounds that show it's phoney.

@@DHU11 Well she's 47 now actually and still looking amazing. Most women at 40 (non actresses for the most part of course) don't look half as good as she does. They stop taking care of themselves or never did in the first place. I'm nearly 40 myself so it's refreshing and hopeful to see other women aging gracefully.

I could never finish Brooklyn OMG! I watched it twice and got really sleepy and I'm ashamed! I made it to the part when so-and-so dies and she goes back home and sees Domhall's character. I have no idea how it ends!

This is really funny because when I saw Brooklyn I kept thinking about how much Saoirse Ronan looks like Kate Winslet.
it's fascinating to see 2 different generation actors communicating and bonding with each other.
Kate Winslet very quickly and casually switching to Joanna Hoffman's accent shows how much strong of an actress she is. Most actors have a hard time doing it, and understandably so because even if you have mastered different accents you need to immerse and connect to a character's environment to do that.
That reminds me of an SNL skit when Kate Winslet was playing a scientist. The joke was so funny that the cast members couldn't stop laughing, but Kate remained in character way until the end. Her discipline was beyond compare. She became my favorite actress because of that skit.
A particular quote from "Steve Jobs" said by Kate Winslet as Joanna Hoffman that gives me a bit of a laugh is "The computer in '2001' said 'Hello' all the time and it still scared the shit out of me."
This interview never gets old. They both got some certain classic charms that I love. Hope to see both of them doing something together again more in the future.
