@DarthRevan , seeing as it’s aluminium it was likely just cut using a bandsaw across then polished to a fine finish. If it was polished not long before filming then you get that mirror finish before aluminium oxide begins to form on the surface.

I havent come back to this in awhile and its nice to see the conversation still going. RaozSkillz you said it better than I could while making this. I did use the word "butter" though when describing how the blades would cut through the base. :). We remanufactured Lauri's base style so it would look real. The outside is scuffed and dark because its sitting out in his shop and actually being used. The core isn't, it's straight steel, so why wouldn't it be bright, and coupled with the cut it would quite possibly come out polished. There was a lot of thought into it overall. Also originally there were thoughts to make the cuts come out straight, I switched it fast enough to have the fan... theoretically it would be messy due to the fan cut down and then the pull out... but it got too complicated with timing, so at least I got the fan in for a bit of realism.

keep in mind the sodium would have reacted with the water in the air, so it would have went up in flames. Keep in mind gallium is another soft shiny material that melts at room temperature they could have cast a "Tool" with it and threw it in the freezer.

My guess would be something weaker like tin or aluminum for the 'hardened steel' and the ball and claw are made of really strong steel. Claw is also sharpened. A lot.

I think post would have been much easier for the claw yes, but honestly it might have been cheaper to actually just do aluminum vs steel for the ball.

***** Yeah I agree, the first part was perhaps a steel bearing and aluminum block. I also think the claws part is likely to be CGI; I don't think Mr Hydronic press would let anyone with even a plastic cosmetic prop on their fist do that since he knows unexpected shit happens and that wouldn't be safe. The other reason I think it's CGI is the claw blades only go half the way through the block - even if it was aluminium that would still be inpossible to slice through the rest of the block like he does in this video, even if the prop was razer sharp steel and it was lashed to his whole forearm. Annnnd also the sparks at the end, that would also take more downwards force that anyone could muster from their firsts/wrists - that much sparkage anyway. It's possible it's all clever editing and no CGI at all, I'll be really impressed if that's the case.
