Thanks for this. I've wondered if you can do this as well. Well done! You even answered my question about the lens mount. I have M12 fittings here so now I know it'll work perfectly. Thanks again.
You sir are a genius and you have a lot of patience. That was a great modification you made I like the view screen on that little camera as well. You made my ride to work interesting this morning.
It was needed... I am going to start a playlist with you. I hope my internet stays up, we are getting hit with the remnants of hurricane Bud lot of of lighting and thunder.
Great Video ..it was exciting to watch you changing the lense and when you touched the ir filter with glue it was breath taking thinking that you might drop some on the Filter itself , but it all ok now:) cheers from Cloudy & Rainy Melbourne :)
Yep, I was not too concerned about the filter at that point since I thought the filter had damage from me prying on it. I was planning on buying a new filter, but it worked great so no need to buy a new one! Thanks for watching!
Thanks ..talking about filters i just purchased Nd filter for my go pro 5 & 6 still have test them on sunny day when i find some free time(busy at work at the moment ):)
It was a useless camera with the cracked lens, and returning was not an option, so I opted to fix it and made it more suitable for my intended use. Thanks for watching Allen!

That is a nice hack for the camera, good job. It looks a lot like those GoPro, either way you are brave for opening it and modify it. Take care big like on this video #17
Any follow-up on your surgery and any footage sample from infinity focus? btw you did great to show us the anatomy of this camera that seems to be the very common platform of Chines but seriously, you only needed to remove the front plate and then use that tool to brake open the glue. But then we wouldn't see the inner front and LCD side. My question: How was your experience with that particular lens and how was the image quality, sharpness, and infinity focus? I think I can get the zoom lens for under $15 and love to do this transformation if the result is anything worthy and how knows, if useful, I may consider doing the same with GoPro one day.
the camera ended up dying about a year later, I will buy another and do the lens there someday. As you saw from the orchid and the ant lion videos the image is very sharp, not sure about infinity focus did not use it for that.
@@madscientisthut Thanks for the reply. And yes, the sharpness in your clips is amazing, considering you used this GoPro knockoff that natively does not have a sharp image result, definitely due to the lower-quality original lens. Well, you did great, and with the price of these knockoff cameras being so cheap these days, even their bar motherboards for DIY builders or Raspberry Pi, that cost only a few bucks, it's a very rewarding experience to put a hand forward. I'm going to do my own as well. Thanks,
The sensor on these is not good for dark shooting. Also, the lenses have a smaller F number. You can convert a better sensor camera (Probably a security camera or dashcam made for the night with a good Sony/starlight sensor ) and change the M12 mount to a C-mount then use a cheap wide open cine lens (F 1 or even less) you can really hit the night without any enhancing system, utilizing very limited ambient light for a color night vision.
Works just as great on the Akaso EK7000 4k Action Camera - costs less and you only have to pop off the front face and unscrew the factory camera - then pop out the lens bezel from the front face. No disassembly required!
KICK ASS BRO !!! -you beat me to it. i would rather buy a handfull of these cheap cameras then just one of the more expensive high res cameras. Any sample footage??????????????
Thanks! Both of the antlion videos were done with the new lens on the EKEN: ruclips.net/video/l-eslRU_6hM/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/J05dGY-Re8M/видео.html
There's a 2.8-12mm zoom lens on Amazon which I just ordered. This might be better for macro shots. Ironically, the one you got might be better for me since I'm more interested in zoom shots. Did you see the other lens? If so, why did you select yours? The link to the other one is here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HH4MZCM
Let me know how it works, make sure you get the IR blocking filter otherwise your images will have a pink hue and be blurry with the IR hitting the image sensor.
I did not see this lens that you purchased, sometimes it is hard to search amazon for this type of item. The lens I purchased has been working really well for up close up. I did a few videos with it. See the first antlion video I did after this lens video.
Yes I already ordered the IR cut filter. I may just order yours too for comparison. Mine is 3MP but yours is 5MP. Not sure if 5MP is really better than the 3MP or if it's just a marketing gimmick. I also want to see if these CCTV lenses are any different than the much more expensive GoPro/ActionCam lenses. I suspect they aren't but I won't know until my lenses arrive in about a month.
So I finally got around to installing my new lenses in my action camera and guess what? They don't fit. I don't have an EKEN but a YI 4K action camera. There's a metal opening that's not large enough to allow these big lenses to reach the thread inside so I can't screw them in. I don't know if this metal plate can be removed. I may just get an EKEN since you've shown it can take these lenses. Plus it's a lot cheaper so I don't feel too bad about mutilating one. Have you heard of anyone installing these zoom lenses on a YI 4K action camera?
Absolutely not, the lens would not twist out without removing the epoxy from the threads of the lens, this one was glued in very well and would have broke the camera if forced.
@@madscientisthut hello sir, just one question.. Are the plastic threads of the camera are directly bolted or snapped to the pcb? If I use a vice grip pliers and twist it from the outside, would it force the epoxy out or will it break the plastic thread off of the pcb?

Are all the action cameras c mount lens?
The ones I have are all M12 0.5mm pitch which is supposed to be S-mount
Wished there were any.
What the glue are you uses?
Very handy of you! That is great that you are able to do this modification :)
Thank you for watching!
Another interesting production my friend! 👍 Have a nice weekend
Cool camera and very good video my friend!! Left a like 👍👍👍👍

This lens is fisheye or not?
I couldn't fit mine into the frontier case lens hole
You should be able to enlarge the hole in the case.
madscientisthut OK, I've found it, thank you for the reply.
By the way thank you for explaining every single detail. You're a great tutor.
Thank you for the nice comment!
Wow you had a real hard time getting that lens out. This was a wow video and I just loved that you were able to fix it. like 17 Gary
I was actually very surprised at how well they glued that lens in, usually you can crack the glue pretty quickly on lenses. Thank you Gary!
can a camera lens change its resolution?
No.
WHATS THE CAMER CALLED, LINK IN DESCROPTION??
That is a nice hack for the camera, good job. It looks a lot like those GoPro, either way you are brave for opening it and modify it. Take care big like on this video #17
I had to open it and mod it or live with the crack in the lens, not much support for stuff ordered from China. Thanks for stopping by Ben

Hello!
That's a good video on the lens & camera disassembling! Can you put a link to the lens of a description of it?
Thanks
it is in the description for the video, you may have to expand the description with the 'show more'

@@madscientisthut oh! Had missed that. Thank you. Will look it up.

with this lens the camera shoots in the dark ??

I use hot gun for removing the original Lens, it was very easy to smoothed epoxy with heat (about 70*C) no harm to the plastic mounting.
that missing screw hole is an assembly line "static" point. its so people assembling cam dont need to hold cam.
nice to know that one.
Great mod thanks for sharing intricate work great payoff

I also noticed, with the original lens... if you unscrew it to varying distances, the focal length changes... it can also become a macro itself.
That's cool 😎 👍🏼 😊
A drone camera?
I use this camera for time lapse, with the new lens I will be doing lots of plant growth videos in time lapse.
