can't wait to see more!
Can you tell us in more detail about this DIY, what you used and how it worked?
I used everything on the Xiaomi Yi Action Camera except the lens.
I know a film photographer who would gladly give up flaming hot mtn dew for that infrared footage!
😀 I live in Ukraine. Welcome to us.
Jason? 😂
@@DunkelRuhrOutdoors there is no bigger aerochrome nutjob than Jason 😂
what if he finds a way to make super 8 film look like aerochrome
@@DunkelRuhrOutdoorsI've never seen him without a beanie
Edit: scratch that, he didn't have it in the refrigerator video
Wow. footage of the camera is insane. I heve never seen such cool looking footage straight out of a camera. It's a really cool mix of early digital and analog vibes. Amazing!
Thank you =)
never seen any cameras, besides phones huh?
I saw a faire amount of camera's as a camera-operator/assistent in productions. I just really admire the way he made this and how it looks. why would you post a condescending comment on a complement?@@xcruell
Well... now I would have to lurk around second hand market for a 8mm camera... Thank you!
Great video and great project.
This is the best I’ve seen of a conversion until now. Really blown away with the results. Great work
Thank you
Very cool project, the option to switch to infrared is great and the look you get from those old lenses is surprisingly similar to old super 8 despite the fact that it is captured using a modern digital sensor. The lens really does add so much vibe - I imagine that just a little film emulation plugin added in post would get you very authentic super 8 looks.
Thank you )
Actually a modern lens on a modern small grain film looks crispy digital and it's hard to see the difference when printed. Especially when shooting on a technical purpose Fujifilm 400 film - as true as a digital sensor is. The picture is light, shadows and lens, a sensor or a film is a media only (if developed right way).
Just awesome. Glad to see a few people working on making this a reality. Will only get better going forward, and there’s TONS of cameras out there ready to be converted. Subscribed. Oh and I remember trying to get “film look” back in the mini dv days by adding a lens with a scuffed up clear cd spinning in front of it. Everyone had it all wrong and just needed to mod old cameras with the latest and greatest sensor lol
Thank you
Really cool! Image sensor looks decentered to the image plane though, with the sharp plane being on the right side and it not following through the whole image. Really cool look in the forest.
Thank you
I agree. The camera needs to be further calibrated.
Question, by being decentered you mean that the sensor needs to be precisely paralel with the lens or it needs to be centered so that the light square from the lens should fall preciselly on the whole surface of the sensor?
@@dreacul The sensor needs to be parallel with the focal plane, i.e. with the lens.
The sensor being off-center on the other hand would lead to transformations and warpings similair to the shift of a tilt-shift-lens.
This is a project I did not know I needed.
VERY neat project! Cool idea, I've often wondered about converting an old Brownie to digital.
Thank you
I'm torn. On one hand it's really cool to see a vintage body modified for digital and still retain a unique image. But on the other it hurts to watch a working 2x8mm camera gutted😅Would still love to play around with something like this though. Really cool video!
Thank you ))
Loved the mod, loved the soundtrack, well done!
Thank you
Amazing the retro feel that it refers colors and the image
Thank you
Project goals like wuuut! Thanks for the video! Looks like an awesome conversion!
Thank you
Hell yeah, i did not hear the 800 Rap-Master Electronic Keyboard for years
An almost perfect remake, a slight distortion of sharpness is obviously due to a lack of optics, everyone would want this.
Thank you
That's a much better result than I used to get straight out of my Yi Action Cam!
Love it :D
Beautiful! You are an artist, bro.
Thank you
love it, wonderful footage
OMG! I'm jealous of your camera! Congratulations! And a very good editing too! 👏🏻
Thank you )
Such a cool project! You're making me want to try and do the same with one of my old Soviet cameras now...
Thank you
This is a really fun idea! I'm gonna see if I can get an old, broken super8 camera with a reflex lens and build something like it! Thanks for the idea.
Thank you =)
I wish you the best of luck with your creation

This blew me away. The aesthetic of the video is far better than I would’ve expected. What would you say was your material cost? Would you consider making one for me?
Thank you)
All parts were found at a flea market. The parts for the camera cost me less than $100. I will continue to improve the camera. How much would you pay for such a modification? ))
This is an awesome looking novelty that would make a great conversation piece. Any tech savvy hipster would love to own something like this. It is a beautiful vintage video camera actually works! With digital guts no less.
The cool factor is through the roof.
With all that taken into consideration, I think that this camera would probably find it's sweet spot right around the $500 mark.
Any more than that, I think that it would start to lose some of it's appeal and scare away many of the potential buys that would be in the market for something like this.
I own a consulting company that focuses on the psychological influenced marketing so when I saw you ask what the other commenter would pay, I had to jump in. Great work brother!
Thanks for the constructive feedback
@@o_steletskyi I miss the flea market of Kyiv, man. I'm still feeling bad I did not purchase enough stuff back in 2020 when I worked there...
@@dreacul I understand. Kiev used to have wonderful flea markets
this completely blew my mind!
Really cool work, I'm inspired to try it myself
If you attach an IR pas / VIS blocking Filter you can make phantasmic shots. Dark sky, all plants are bright like snow in summer. Looks very unreal.
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

Beautiful piece, congratulations ! I am sure it's a lot of fun to shoot with your new camera !
How do you start and stop recording or offload the footage ? Do you have to remove the cover everytime you want to film ? The smartphone monitor is a very nice idea, now you just need to find a mount you can fold so you can store it more easily !
Very cool idea
Thank you
I have to remove the cover once to turn the camera on. The camera is then controlled by the phone.
SD card can be removed without opening the cover.
I am going to add a power button for convenience.
Amazing job!
Wonderful work. Thank you for sharing-- I want to try something similar now. Your footage looks fantastic
Thank you
Awesome!!! I LOVE it
I’m currently in the process of trying this! Fingers crossed how it turns out
Awesome project! I wish it was easy for digital sensors to have global shutter. That would make this better than perfect.
Thanks for the great diy 🤯
The image looks good and vintage.
Thank you
Wow! I’m LOVING the vintage look from the sensor and lens combination. I’m guessing you just used the action cameras circuit/OS and just removed the shell and native lens? Otherwise, how are out communicating with the sensor data? Brilliant!
That's right
I like it actually. It has a soft vintage look . 😁
wow, this work is inspiring
Thank you
That is so rad. And to have an IR option too. Fun
This prove that lens is more important than digital sensor to give nice vintage look.
Really cool project!
To be fair, I like it, interesting idea.
Thanks, man.
This should get more views. 😊

First I was afraid of destroying an old beauty like that by the inside but turn out great! NICE PROJECT! How was the battery duration? And the files can fit in the SD cards easily? That was amazing
Thank you
It's not quite an antique camera. I have another one in its original form.
The battery lasts for 1 hour.
The SD card is 32GB. No problems with it.
@@o_steletskyi you have plenty of empty space in there, can fit a couple extra batteries
often it's an overhetating issue, not so much the battery life @@prakharmishra3000
try being the right distance for the lens.. they have a fixed focal point as you know.. pick the right lens for the shot, not the other way around..
But FANTASTIC work!
Hi, from Adelaide, South Australia!
Hi, from Ukraine !
Thank you. The camera was incorrectly aligned. Check out the next video: ruclips.net/video/3AGPgKdVpqg/видео.html
That music at the end was very addicting.
Would be interesting to see how it captures black and white with infrared
Love this! The yellow filter look is especially cool. Is the camera doing auto white balance or do you just leave it on one setting?
Thanks 😊 auto white balance
SO GOOD!
Nice work!
This is incredible man. I wanna make one! Maybe after these teens move on outta my house I will have a little extra time. 😉Incredible video BTW.

I would reeeaaaally appreciate a more in depth guide on this. With links to what you used or a sheet of directions because I really want to try something like this!
I'll see what I can do
@@o_steletskyi I’d greatly appreciate it! I think there might even be an industry for this honestly.
To write amazing or awesome is too short. Как отлично или хорошо, in my still poor Russian.
Now I imagined to do something similar in an old analogic camera, to get a good image quality to record in an old system (don't ask me why, even I don't know it).
Congratulations !
Thank you )
Don't know if you have this planed or not, but what if you applied a servo or a motor to a transmitter that could rotate the lenses for you. Just an idea amazing concept and video.
Thank you. That's a good idea.
i always feel like these things are always alot less exciting qhwn you see the result. alot of what makes film film, is the rolls and the developmenet process. this video is a clear identifier of that.
Interesting, i thought about doin something similiar but u did it. cool
Thank you
Pretty damn cool

You did great job
Thank you.
sure looks like film, so as a film shooter of over 45 years exp- wondering just how much the look of film is really old lenses and flare etc... this mod is totally killer- !
amazing idea and video, but some scenes of initial build are too darkened on the left side, so it was quite uncomfortable to watch at those points
Thank you. I'll try to do better.
So tempted to do this. Just scared I ruin the Yashica 8 I am contemplating taking apart.
Is it possible to do this with any point and shoot? Perhaps one that fits in the pocket?
Like an Olympus xa, Ricoh GR, or contax t2? If so it would be incredible if the sensor could be at least 12 Megapixels and has to be a full frame sensor.
I really hope camera companies wise up to this idea and make them.
You should design one first tho. We would all buy it on kickstarter etc. and support you.
such a cool project
Thank you
Realmente extraordinario!! Felicitaciones
Gracias
Great work. Some of that footage almost nails the look - although presumably somewhat higher resolution than normal 8mm film. Question: it looks to me like the sensor readout is slower than on an action cam. There seems to be plenty of rolling shutter. Is that because of (I presume) the sensor is now being read by a little single-board computer rather than a fully optimised camera processor?
I didn't use my controller. I completely transferred the electronics from the action camera to the film camera along with the sensor. This is the maximum that my skills were enough for))
Ah ok. Wow. I wouldn't have thought those little action cams had so much rolling shutter. Fantastic work though.@@o_steletskyi

I wish I was smart enough and had the patience for something like this. I’d take it all apart and forget about it in a day or two if I didn’t finish it then and there.
wow, great work and a really fun idea. you made it look easy. this is _not_ easy. ha!
Thank you )
awesome project! do you have any kind of blueprints?
Thank you.
There is only this video )
My respects!
Hello mister
I very much like the idea. Can you reverse the thing, like put an LCD in a DIA projector?
Thank you.
That's an interesting idea.
I think it's possible.
Take the body of an old camera + take the sensors of another camera. Mix them to get a new better camera. Nice 👍 basically take broken cameras and scavenge their parts.
C'est genial!
Can you tell us in more detail about this DIY, what you used and how it worked?
I'll try to put out a more detailed video next time.
Impressive project. When aligning the sensor, did you just kind of put it in? Or did you try to align it to the position where otherwise the film went?
Thank you.
I was trying to put the sensor in place of the film.
It's a soviet camera. It could have defects from the very beginning ))))
@@o_steletskyi haha I totally get what you mean 🤣
Dude. So cool.
Thanks )
How did you get such a good image from an action camera, the dynamic range looked pretty good. Maybe the old action camera lens was plastic or something
I tried to shoot video in good lighting conditions.
Although, I myself was surprised by the quality of video recording from this budget camera.
You should sell these kinds of mods! It can only be better and cheaper than Kodaks new 8 mm camera!!

to do something similar, i just have to house the action cam within the film compartment of a double 8? no software mod needed? I can easily mod the same battery and charger module, and maybe mod the action cam buttons to the film cam to record easy
Yes. Without lens.
And adjust the sensor to the correct position.
@@o_steletskyigreat then, any particular reason you used the xiaomi yi action cam over others?
Very, very nice! But I think the problem is in the "Y" part of "DIY"...
so its like an analog cyberpunk casmewra with the purpel leds? caznt u just add purpel leds to my smartphone>
How did you amke sure the sensor only recorded when you pulled the trigger?
Have you conjectured install the sensor behind the mechanism that roll the film in order to capture the open/close cycle of the film camera?
No. Maybe I'll do this in the next project.
Do you know if there are products like this for sale? I mean, old cameras that can record in MP4 format. I've always wanted to have an old camera to shoot videos, but it's very difficult for me to send the film to be converted to digital format because that service isn't available in my country.
I don't know.
Nice 👍
I was deeply inspired by your video. Now i want to get a broken Super8 camera and convert into an action cam like what you did. Do you think there will be enough space in Super8 Camera?
Can I follow your method by removing the rotary disc shutter of the camera and disassembling the action cam to install it inside the camera?
I'm curious if it's possible to transfer the components of the action cam into the Super8 film cartridge instead of inside the camera.
Also, I wonder why you removed the IR filter from another camera for use. Is there no IR filter between the sensor and lens in the action cam?
I'm a novice in cameras and videos, so could you provide any tips or expertise for me? I would greatly appreciate your advice.
The newer action cams don't seem to have an infrared filter and have their own coating on the lens.
Yes
My camera used double super8 film.
It gave me More space inside the camera.
