I'm having this at MY funeral...just for the chorus and the fact that it sums up an awful lot about my life and that of so many other people. Well done Elbow!
One of the best songs ever written, if you ask me. Arr is super. During a long life I have concluded a list of less than 10 musical jewels from the classical world that contains music harmonies most beautiful. Often short parts in a symphony or opera. Among these Tchaikovsky, Mascagni, Albinoni, Sibelius and a few others. This song with the beautiful brass section is extraordinary. The 26 seconds of brass solo 4:10 into the 6 minutes versions now joins the above mentioned classical jewels. Gets a tear or two in my eyes every time I listen.
@@robinstahlwarelius1845 Ok, here are some of my jewels. Taste should never be discussed, it is all about your own soul. Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana, Intermezzo. Can be heard at the end of Goodfather III (ruclips.net/video/pYvNcEnoAtc/видео.html). I specifically like the tunes from 1:18 to the end. Tchaikovsky: Serenade in C major for Strings, Op. 48: Pezzo in forma die Sonatina Sibelius: Finlandia, Op. 36 Depends on recording, mine is from a Naxos CD, the whole opus is enjoyable but I specifically enjoy from 5:22 to 7:00 Dvorak: New World Symphony, 2nd Movement: Largo (London Philharmonic Orchestra 2018, on Spotify) Ok, take it or leave it, I wish you a Happy New Year!
I'm a black music fan. I won't lie to ya..... but on the way home from work heard this on Radio 2..... Steve Wrights programme and was awe struck! I knew of Elbow because at my sons wedding a month ago they chose 'One Day Like This' to be played whilst they were signing the register, but on hearing this I can't tell you. It just struck a chord and melted my heart. I'm up for hearing more.
Their album "The Seldom Seen Kid" seriously one of the best albums on the planet ever known to man. So much in fact that I've got the album name tattooed on my arm!
Some of those captains have died, some settled with children, some drifted away to unknowns, but we all saw that sunrise at least once, can't really say it was a waste of time, it was a perfect waste of time.
think these guys just nail everything, I introduced alot of American's to Elbow while I was over there and they were all blown away by them, I think Elbow as the UK's house band!
I'm out oh Philadelphia and have tried endlessly to get people into this band. Elbow just played in Philly and the venue might have been 2/3's filled. Shocked and disappointed to say the least. I honestly have no idea why they're not more popular in the states. As I tell people when I describe Elbow's music to them, it's simply beautifully brilliant.
LOVE these guys - may very well be my favorite - their music is so pleasant and joyous and they seem like really nice guys - I just WANT to root for them!
How have I only come across this song now !! So pleased I watch LIFE the bbc drama, had to pause the episode stone dead when I heard this in background. What a truly Fantastic song.
every now and then comes along an albumn that should be in everyone's collection, this is one and this song is so amazingly beautiful I am lost for a superlative that will do it justice. Was lucky to see them perform this and others in Liverpool on the 12th April.
Lovely, wonderful song. I first heard this from watching the BBC drama 'Life' (2020) - a 'Doctor Foster' spin-off series. I guessed it was Elbow. "And if it's so, we only pass this way but once. What a perfect waste of time." Really touches a cord. Thank you.
Almost quotes from Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" and from Wiliam Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, the magically simple percussion and the almost slow Mariachi style horns... it's a musical feast!
Wish the studio version was different, the horns combined with the "oh my soul"...don't know if it's just the recording but it is piercing, not in a good way...but ultimately the song is a success because it's just so good.
I'm totally with you Timothy. Their live version of "My Sad Captain" is absolutely beautiful, while the album version I can't, and won't, even listen to. They are so much better live than in the studio, I feel. The raw emotions come out in their songs while played lived, without the grating effects they seem to pile on in the studio.
A person or (persons) who, in the past, prepared and sold medicines and drugs and who’s chosen mode of transport was a bicycle moto cross self propelled cycle.
This song is truly a masterpiece. Songwriting perfection, music doesn't get better than this.
Beautifully said.. I've seen it performed and sang along with him.. Such a moving song..
We need music like this at the moment 🙏🙏🙏🙏
What a voice
I've always thought lyrics like these and many others should be taught as poetry in schools . So perfect.
Elbow themselves do not know how great they are, what a sound, I can feel my heart bursting!
Never heard the song before, but on the day of my mother in laws funeral, random play kicked it out. Didn't seem random at all. perfect song

thank you funnywise
Everything about this song is absolutely perfect.
For me the best track on the record. Just beautiful from start to finish.
Wasn't crazy about it on first listen but after the third I was hooked and it's tied with Charge for my favorite song on the album.
Beautiful. Can't stop listening.
This is BRILLIANT..brings tears
That voice. Guy Garvey, you get me every time with that voice. I've said it once, ill say it again... That voice though.
My Sad Captains? it's perfect Weather To Fly! Elbow at their very, very best... Thanks for posting!
I want this at my funeral! (purely for the chorus!!) Guy Garvey is a proper poet!
Captures that moment of drinking with friends in the pub perfectly....one for the road..
.we come this way but once my friends...go on then..

"The American's what?" I get it anyway, even if he doesn't!! Annoys me too.

I've just done the same.
Yeah, me too, really hit me hard, just had to find it!
The wonderful Elbow touching the heart!
This group is original, beautiful, profound -- surprised more Americans don't know of them.
+Miranda Spencer Oh, I know now. Beautiful music.
now this is music in perfection!!!
I may not be a big Elbow fan but this song is close to my heart ♥️

Agree completely about the album. We were at that Liverpool concert too! Incredible live band!😊
oh man, those trumpets! Reminds me of Chuck Mangione- plus another sublime song from Elbow. Who can touch them?

These guys sure know how to write a melody! Heard about them for years but just starting to really dig into the catalog. Wonderful journey so far....

Guy's lyrics complement the melodies perfectly. Pure poetry.
Finally got to see 'em last week at the O2. Superb. Utterly.

on the fringes in the 90s 2000s . people talk like they were huge. how many great memorable tunes?
awsome
One word trumpet end of!!!!!
epic tune
Never heard of them desert Iland brought me her very good
like the way guy sings with his own accent rather than an American one who else sings with a northern accent other than George formby
Plenty of British artists do

Better than the Studio Album version
Any idea where you can get full concert outside UK?
Full concert anywhere?
Google Manchester live at the apollo. I was there and was awesome
Does anyone know how I can get a copy of THIS version ? Simply one of the most beautiful songs........ever.
www.youtube-mp3.org/
Sadly, that site no longer works for me. Thanks anyway. Does the bbc issue any of these recordings ?
