I got kind of obsessed with watching gold mining and panning videos because I like the idea of someone actually getting gold from nothing. Sreetips, you hit the nail on the head with e-scrap and all the other urban mining trends out there to get precious metals. After you factor in the costs of getting enough material+ equipment+acids+ dealing with the waste (and your time) you'd be further ahead by doing nothing if you were doing it for profit. Its fun and interesting to be able to recover gold from everyday items and a good starting point for a hobbyist to build their experience but it definitely isn't profitable. If you were into it for the money you'd be better off buying gold at a pawn shop and sitting on it till the price goes up.
I'm glad to see you sell your good condition finds on ebay and refine the rest yourself but would like to add that buying gold scrap off ebay (from other sellers) in any form such as scrap lots, escrap paydirt etc is almost ALWAYS a rip off. Sellers tend to list 10k+14k scrap with other bulk lots and hope that uninformed buyers will snatch it up not realizing that it is probably a lot with 1 damaged piece of 10k and another small piece of 14k and the rest is gold plated costume crap. The sellers know what they are putting in the bag.... buyer doesn't, there is no way a seller is going to take a chance at loosing money.
The only way to make it pay off is like you and you wife are doing it by knowing what to look for, where to look and how much to pay.
    Great video btw

We process eWaste in Pompano Beach Florida. You are correct. The material has to be obtained in large amounts, at low cost. But, it can be. It is better to think of eWaste as a very high quality Gold ore. The Gold concentration is orders of magnitude higher than what comes out of the ground. Yet, even at that, it is still a small percentage by weight.

I have watched this once before. I have a lot of confidence in spotting/identifying silver. It has a much lower risk as well. With gold, the best I have done is to acquire GF under spot. I cannot get my hands on karat gold under spot. Our local main thrift store, the DI never seems to have gold in their valuables, and the silver is always plated.

I have been buying storage units for years and have found lots of gold over the years. Thanks for sharing. I also end up with tons of escrap and computer scrap for free. What should I do with all that stuff? Is it worth my time to break it all down or should I just scrap it for what I can get in the state it’s in? Most of the time it’s complete computer towers or busted cell tower phones. I got about a full truck bed load of e scrap right now

sreetips clean it up and sell it on eBay? Get it broke down where it’s only the parts that contain gold and list it on eBay or just take it to a escrap buyer in the condition it’s in. You are a huge inspiration to me. Would love to get into refining but not setup for it and don’t really have the time either. These storage units and flea markets keep me very busy. E-waste, gold filled, karet scrap ...etc. I have a nice clientele base and work for several recyclers..... 25% of recovered metals I do gold and silver mainly and just poking into pgms as it's a completely different set of challenges.... Thanks for the video always inspiring thanks Kevin....

I never bother with e-waste and rarely process gold-filled. It takes far too much in the way of chemicals to get the small percentage of gold they contain.
For example, 1/20 12kt GF has only 2.5% pure gold, assuming you get 100% recovery. So if you have 10 Toz of the plated material, it only contains 0.25 Toz of gold. I just sell the stuff to my favorite local coin shop, who will only buy it if I have 50 Toz or more to sell at one time. That is because his refiner will not accept lots smaller than that and also charges an assay fee.

Great video! I have been into the ewaste for awhile now and never thought of karat scrap. Makes me want to dive right in, but a little intimidating. Ewaste is found for free mostly, karat scrap has out of pocket costs for the scrap and I frankly do not have the exp to know how much to pay. Sreetips, could you give a basic breakdown, without giving up too many of your private details, on what a good purchase price range would be for buying the different karat scrap like in your video. For instance the average 14K ring you would pay what for? Things like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You have brought my goals to a whole new level. Your processes and lab are what I aim for. Do you offer more tailored education to people, like one on one?

I pay 80% of spot for the karat gold that I buy. My wife pays pennies on the dollar, because she knows where to look. The idea is to pay the least amount possible to maximize profit. But it's hard to do, especially if your buyer knows what they have. Just yesterday my wife handed me about 15 grams of karat gold that she paid $15 for. The seller told her to pick out what she wanted from the jewelry pile, "it's all costume anyway." This person did not know what she had but my wife could tell that it was karat scrap. This may seem deceptive, but it's the way to make a healthy profit from the scrap.

The hardest part is finding the gold and silver scrap at reasonable prices.
You don't need to refine it. If you get it at a good enough price, you can resell it to a buyer - preferably a refinery (if you can find a refinery that buys from the public). The worst place to sell it is to a pawn shop - they will only give you 40%-50% of the spot price. Businesses specializing in buying gold/silver will pay a bit more - except for the rip-off traveling outfits that set up in a motel/hotel - they are as bad (or worse) than pawn shops.
Coin shops that buy gold/silver are probably your best bet outside a refinery. What they will pay depends on a number of factors, including how much you have, how often you sell to them, the percentage they get from their refiner and the quality of your previous sales to them. They seem to pay around 80% of spot, although the local shop I have been dealing with pays me 90%.

You are a true gentleman giving your wife most if not all the credit for finding the valuable stuff. I agree it takes a keen eye to find the real gold among the dross. Apparently your wife is very proficient at this :)
Personally, I would probably rather refurbish, repair or clean up those things and, sell most of it "as is". But then, I agree refining the gold and silver and other precious metals is also part of the fun.
The only thing I wonder about, is how much true waste you produce, refining. If you're to dispose of the waste safely and in a nature-friendly way, that too costs money. I do believe you're a responsible person, and you don't dispose of any waste through the drain or in a hole in the ground.
In other words, I think some profit can also be made by avoiding unnecessary costs, don't you agree?
I mean, optimizing refinement to such a degree you spend the least possible amount in tools and chemicals to help you with the process of refining.
In any case, I'm very curious what and how much you will extract from your waste bucket (or "stockpot" as you call it) and how much of it will be true "waste".
Thanks for sharing your insights and video :)

Not all that shines is gold :) Once a famous cathedral's dome was refurbished in our capital, and it shone like gold, for six months or so. Then, it turned green. It turned out church authorities had been fooled by the contractor, who had used a lot of polished yellow copper to restore the dome, letting them think it had been gold-plated with gold foil... not! *grin* Like I said, it takes a keen eye to see what's real gold and what's not :)

Yes! If you noticed I only have about 2 quarts of waste, and it still had precious metals in it. I spend about 10% of my time at the shop processing waste - especially the escrap waste - so much of it. When I do my stock pot video I'll have a bunch in there about waste treatment because the stock pot is the first place that my waste gets processed.

sreetips I put my gold and silver in a beaker, ( try a 250 ml) so don't use much. I did this to mix it up. Knowing there is silver in solution. (Hence my eager video on .925 silver refining.) I add a few tea spoons to cover but not to excess the AU & AG. I then add 50ml at a time of HCL. I have not heated it but would be interesting to see your approach. I then test the solution once filtered for Gold, and sprinkle a little bit of table salt ( a pinch) to see if silver is present. Of course u know silver is present do i drop that with table salt. Then use Sulfamic acid to precipitate the Gold. Not SMB! The silver that is dropped is 99 something. I still add a tiny bit of Sulfuric acid to both AG & AU solution to ensure lead is not present. Then I fire it. I later refine again but I fear I am missing out in other metals. Hence my request for a video. I will be happy to donate, but I really do appreciate your support on this. Jon

Most karat gold is "hall marked" or stamped with the karat right on the piece. For those pieces not marked I use test needles with known samples of karat gold scratched on a touch stone next to the unknown sample then apply acid and watch what happens.

So for a month's haul of gold and silver scrap, I am Still a little hazy on the profit part So 3-5K on all scrap cost, Gets you 3-5K profit on the gold alone approx ? ok what about the silver ? and the resale of the Gold and Silver jewelry you put on E-Bay ? $$$ is this a full or part-time gig ? How much time total about did you put into processing that 1 months haul of scrap ?? Seems like great teamwork and a decent profit if you are consistent on that volume. TKU !
