This is the most my-dream-childhood thing I’ve ever seen. Synths, drum machine, Aphex shirt, CDs, Mario bros on the DS. You have got it all! Thanks too for the awesome cover!!
Its been years since I first stumbled upon this video.. 8 to be exact. I gotta say thanks man because it inspired me to purchase a EMX-1 and warp my mind in my own personal dimension of music. This cover still kicks ass!!
I can't believe I'm saying this...but, I like this version of "I'm Self Employed" more...mainly cause of the variation in beat, the bass and everything in general. If you could make this a full fledged song, that would be amazing!
Cover jam is a good way to put it. You add stuff over time as it progresses which makes it awesome. For a jam song, this is choice. Awesome job on it, peace.
@Ganjacide Thank you! I'm dumbfounded by the amount of people saying they enjoy this more than the original. I really put no thought into how to best recreate it; the drum machine pattern was just something I made before I even programmed the synth lines into the EA1, and I randomly decided to use it for this jam. I guess it was all luck!
You rock dude. I'm making a setup with some gear that I can input notes while its playing. I have other gear but it won't do unless I buy an external sequencer, so I might as well get some more Electribes.
This is about 20 patterns of information. The song has more. Sounds cool, maybe cheezed out a bit on the right-most electribe but... it's cool. I'm happy to hear it, good job.
I liek the original more than this, but this is proably the best cover of it that could be done. Great Job! I think I enjoy the original version for it's dynamic, flexible, liquid, and natural sound. This version is much more consistent.
Thanks! I don't know what you mean by 20 patterns of information. This is one 4 bar pattern on each machine. It's a for-fun cover jam, not a planned out or faithful remake.
Agreed, it's just a cover jam, I really wasn't trying to make a better song or make a song at all, I just wanted to play with those synth lines. That's why I was so surprised at how many people liked this more than the actual song...
It really depends on what you're looking for. The ER1 is a great beat machine because of its unique drum synthesis. You can use it for all kinds of wacky sounds, beyond just retro sounding drums. The EA1 is a rather simplistic 2 part mono synth, but having a sequencer makes it worthwhile because you can't really find a synth groovebox in its price range, except for some older ones like the MC 303.
The drums are coming from the bronze Electribe ER1. You can assign which note each drum part has, and they will send to the midi output on the channel you want.
@TheBOZORUS The ER1 is probably simplest. But keep in mind, it's just a drum machine, so you can't really add any proper melodies or basslines, but you can get very creative with the drum synthesis. The ER1 was my first.
What do you mean at the same time? You can only have one pattern playing at any one time. Each pattern uses 2 synth parts. You can switch to any other pattern in real time, as you can see in some of my other videos. The total number of patterns you can store is 256. You can not play two patterns at once.
There is a software utility you can use with the ES1 first version (not the mkii) that lets you do this. Alternatively, you can use the motion sequence on the pitch, and you can edit which exact value it goes to on which step, so you can construct accurate melodies and basslines after all, although it takes some work.
@vegeta897 Ahh, my bad! I just thought that the ESX and EMX were the only solid coloured ones (save for the EM-1). Plus, the synthamasizer database I use is vintagesynth, and they left the MKIIs out of their database! So, honest mistake?
Bruh. This shit straight savage. I mean I love the original, but c'mon. You killed this.
Thanks!
Love that this track is still up after all the years.
Love that I still get comments!! Thank you!
@@vegeta897 It’ll last forever. It’s *such* a good cover.
Still one of my favorite videos on RUclips. I'll keep coming back.
This is the most my-dream-childhood thing I’ve ever seen. Synths, drum machine, Aphex shirt, CDs, Mario bros on the DS. You have got it all! Thanks too for the awesome cover!!
Hahaha, thank you!
oh man finding this video again, used to watch the shit out of this and envied you so much for the electribes as a kid :D
Haha, I love that.
Still hands down the best AFX cover there is! It got so much character like its another jam version of the original 💜
Thank you!
Its been years since I first stumbled upon this video.. 8 to be exact. I gotta say thanks man because it inspired me to purchase a EMX-1 and warp my mind in my own personal dimension of music. This cover still kicks ass!!
+Jonas Serra So awesome to hear that, thanks for coming back to leave a comment :D

Limitations breeding some incredible creativity...damn, I'm going to have to buy an EA-1 mkii now hahaha
Thanks everyone. Didn't expect this to get such a good reaction. Although I must say I am proud of the ending. All improv.
Amazing
A decade and a half late to the party but man this is good
Aw dang, thank you!
I can't believe I'm saying this...but, I like this version of "I'm Self Employed" more...mainly cause of the variation in beat, the bass and everything in general. If you could make this a full fledged song, that would be amazing!

Good work men!!
Nice video mate :D
top markssssss. 10 x
Nice work!!
Yeah, sequencers are pretty necessary if you've got a lot of keyboard synths and you want to jam! I'll be needing one eventually.
Really awesome dude =) I like your version more then RDJ original, really =)
i really enjoyed that.
Vegeta, this is rad :)

That's the EA.

Thanks man!
replay. I quit smoking but I need a cig after this. still loving it
Nice cover jam man
The only thing the audio needs is to be a bit compressed, but other than that, it's pretty awesome.
Cheers
You have talent :D
lovely
very nice indeed
great stuff, was really hoping you would play the other lines though
pretty cool man , wide arc swing
Thanks man!
In this vid I use Korg ER1 mkII and EA1 mkII with Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer.
Check the description next time :)
:) just don't give up, man.

pretty awesome
