The 1920's were truly a fancy decade, so Ashley Stroud joined us to re-imagine Iggy Azalea's hit song as if it was sung by a Jazz Age flapper. Perfect for your next Great Gatsby-themed party. Check out the sweet tap break at 1:58!

Scott's Book: smarturl.it/out...
It's just genius. I'm looking at the original lyrics. They change the f-bomb in it to "futz" which was 1920s slang. I'm also surprised by how much of it transfers over. Film star, chandelier swinging, taking liquor straight with no chasers, "money". All that was really new in the 20s, and a lot of it is 1920s slang. It's surprisingly relevant. Even some of the spelling variants "Bizness" were used at the time. The fast paced "chatter" she's using for the rap sections were well known to Jazz by then too. If you could take this back in a time machine, only a few of the words or phrases would even give them trouble.
one day I'll unlock this drummer
Already made that joke friend.
jay moneyman worth it
HAH! I saw your coment on the other video...
not if you don't have the correct DLC
Just 3000XP To Go! Or you can unlock him now for the LOW LOW price of $54.55!
I can just imagine a Betty Boop cartoon with this song.
You just...uggghhhhh the image is way to clear
Midnight Blue omg... yes!
Midnight Blue WHY HAS NOBODY DONE THIS ALREADY?! Quick! Put an all call out to any artist who can draw and animate in the old Rubber Toon style of that era!
Exactly what I was thinking. Lol!
She looks like a combination of Betty Boop and Princess Tiana
Lol right though
Oh yeah trueeeee
Anne Arckey Cuteness overload.... heart melting...
Think: I know right
Anne Arckey holy shit yes
I love that vintage covers are a thing. It was something I never knew I desperately needed till I heard it.
I love Ashley. she's so playful and has a great happy energy
Who else thinks that this version is so much better than the original?
Mee!
much easier listening to her interpretation
yep
+Glaceon457 well indeed!
yup
That girl looks like she is painted with the brush that Walt Disney used to draw pretty girls.
I know right! So pretty. :-)
Ansjo I know right💝she looks like Tiana 😍
The Princess and the Frog is set in 1920s
Chroma
i know. "meanwhile, other pretty girls color the celluloid"
Ashley did this song last night at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson(Nov 7th, 2014) and her voice was brilliant, better than captured in this particular video. She also did another piece where her voice was absolutely etheral. I am so glad that Scott brought his band to Tucson and that we had a chance to experience their musical talent!
A locked character is playing the drums.
damn its like that lmao.
Hah your right
a locked character i think you mean unlocked would mean you could see him
lls
LMFAOOOO oh my god but don't you mean locked
1:47 Now "Make the phone call" really looks fancy, if we think there are real 20s
For years, I occasionally come back to this song version. It cheers me up.
Was a fan of post modern jukebox for a while, but was thrilled with both Joey Cook's take on this song, and the fact that she had the class to credit PMJ on the show. Keep up the good work Scott. You are inspiring new artists!
Joey Cook has it all. Brilliant taste in music, quirky sense of style, a unique flavour, undeniably humble, wickedly beautiful, and fiercely independent! Coming from an Australian, I am happy that she took the crap that was this poor excuse for Aussie Hip Hop and looked at how it could be made into a great song, while remaining humble and respectful enough to shout out to PMJ (who are now on high-rotation on my Spotify). So good to see something on Idol that isn't the same recycled crap but something that's interesting, soulful, and screams genius. PMJ are my favourite discovery of 2015. Also coming from an Australian, do you reckon you could convince someone to vote for her on my behalf?
I love the whole arrangement of this, but honestly my favorite part might be Miss Stroud looking so happy during her tap dancing. She doesn't smile much in the other videos, so that was just great.
You're already amazed and loving the song.
And then she tap dances. Good gravy, this is so spectacular.
A pebble turned into a gemstone...
More like a mule turd turned into a gemstone. :-P
Katie Austin LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL this version actually sounds FANCY. loved it.
more like a rough diamond magically transformed into a shiny pearl.
why is this so much better than the original
1. It was actually fancy
2. Jazz/swing is awesome
3. They're openly imitating a different genre for entertainment, not faking it for profit
lol defenitly
Stephen Approves!
Because Iggy Azalea makes music for white girls who are doing community service for stealing earrings from Claires, while this version actually captures being Fancy.
Johnny Asher lol
Stephen Approves! Because 20's 40's 60's 80's culture and many others are deep on our genes and who doesn't feel it and apreciate it is doomed to be forever plain and clourless, as today most pop\comercial music and culture, lots of flash and zero content or talent. So sad, that is what sells though.
they managed to turn this song into something amazing oh god
this comment is too true
I knew they were wizards
Ashley must be one of the most dedicated talents you have worked with, to pull of singing such a quick tempo song with tongue twisting lyrics, and to TAP DANCE. Maybe simple stuff but I bet everyone was proud when you got the perfect take. Bravo!
Oh how I wish today's music was like this
I absolutely love this!! It's awesome to find bands that are keeping the style of the 1920s-50s alive!
Very nicely done.
That piano playing is everything!
Scott Bradlee is everything. Genius
Can't you just picture this in The Great Gatsby
Now that you mention it, this would be perfect for that story.
just a shame that the film was made before the song came out :(
Yes!! During one of Gatsby's parties
This is why I love PMJ!! The jazzy/ swing covers of original pop, hip hop, gospel, (you name it!) music is truly amazing!!! ❤❤❤
Not endorsing Iggy because I can't stand a racist, however, this cover is awesome (so is Ashley Stroud) and deserves to be more popular than the original (same with Ashley Stroud).
iggys boyfriend is black, and shes stupid as all get out and most likely a racist but she wouldn't know since shes too pampered by the pop status
Bandito frijole Hey you wouldn't have to be concerned about me if you'd minded your own goddamn business in the first place.
Aalinh Orberst "ugh she was right and took my point away better find another way to insult her, so let's pretend being actually educated is a bad thing, get a hobby instead of being educated! there I sure showed her!!"
you're completely right in everything you said. Iggy is racist and it's obvious in her tweets too, where she's made fun of like 5 different races including asian people, mexican americans, and native americans.
John Vargas keh.
John Vargas "Headass"...what kind of basic insult?
She's too cute!
agree
+funkytrollcat
Indeed !
Oh. I think I can just about stand it.
I agree with those of you who think this is better than the original. Soooo much better! ...and I'm not a huge tap fan, and I've never thought tap was sexy, but when I saw this little tap ditty it gave me goosebumps and I've never though I'd feel that way about something like this. The band is outstanding and the lead little lady is silky smooth. Superb work folks! Keep up the fantastic music!
My god this channel is amazing. I'm a huge 20's-50's fan ever since games like Bioshock gracefully overran my childhood. You are all so amazing and beautiful. Someone should add your music to everything, from steampunk games to the radio. ;-;7 Hats off to you my friends.
Scott Bradlee was the guy behind the anachronistic covers in Bioshock: Infinite.
This was fantastic. I've never even heard of the original. I have a feeling I should consider myself fortunate?
I never heard of it too tough but i love this one :D
I personally enjoy the original. But if you're the type of person who calls contemporary music "mainstream crap" you probably won't like it.
The original is bad... Because it really is, you dont have to be a hipster to not like it, you just need ears. Those mainstream songs are most times catchy at least but this one... uuugh...
Jaey Bob I like the original, I'm not usually into mainstream songs at all but fancy was alright for me lol I guess we're opposites hahaha
You're not alone. ;)
I don't even know the original song. And I don't plan on finding it. I know this is better already.
You really don't need to bother finding the original.
***** "stagaring"
I refuse to listen to the original ever again. Thank you.
Princess tiana and Betty Boops :0
Boop* ops haha
Lucia Lobos And somewhere Lillian Roth is smiling.
Lucia Lobos betty boop was actually based off a black woman so this works well!!
coconut head I'm pretty sure Betty Boop was originally meant to be a dog.
idk what that is supposed to mean?
I honestly like this version just as much as the original. I am a HUGE fan of the 1920s so I'm really loving this lol
But seriously though this would've gone great with The Great Gatsby
Fuck Daisy >:(
*GASP I , SAY sir
Gavin Murray Bitches, old sport.
Gavin Murray donts do that
Gavin Murray you sir are a scandalous individual!
She is sooooo good!!!! I want more sings from her
Scott is KILLING That Piano!
That girl is so damn cute and beautiful :)
Sigil of Azael sorry for yoyr eyes.
Sexy af!
DApatangieahtziri ikr
The only acceptable version of Fancy XD
Agreed!
Ashley is soooo polished, beautiful, great singer, and has amazing stage presence!!! I loooooovvvvveeee her!
And she taps too?? Five stars like all their videos!!! :)
Well this was rather Fancy :3
Aaahhh Candy for my ears.
Everything about this. The music, the costume and THAT VOICE.
I love this one, the old one was nice but this is just perfect!
The best part about this, is it doesn't even sound like it couldn't be from the 20s. Best thing I've seen in a while!
Yes to her tap break in the middle😍👏🏾👏🏾
Ashley Stroud makes me so bloody happy. Love her to pieces in this
Beautiful cover!!!! The singer is so cute and happy to be singing!!! I love this, but also it's a bit rude of everyone in these comments to support these artists by dragging down the original singer... they both worked hard on singing this song. But the singers on postmodernjukebox defiantly deserve more love!
Whoa! This sounds so...amazing! The talent here is very impressive, please don't stop doing these postmodern covers!
She sings this on point with actual musical notes faster than Iggy could rap it horribly... while tap-dancing...
So much life is being giving to me by this
Ashley is just so adorable and her voice is just love
I like this version better because, its more FANCY than the original! Hahahha
Seriously, PMJ should tour the entire globe. Wish they would come over to Korea sometime.
If this song was sung in the 1920's people would go crazy, it would have made history
Absolutely one of my favorite covers from PMJ. Not in the least because it is so incredibly much better than the original.
how cool would a playlist of this stuff be for like a 1920s themed dress up party? guests could still dance and sing bc they'd know all the songs and you'd still get the 1920s feel :). put in some smoke machines for a jazz club feel and it'd be pretty realistic
This is my first time viewing this masterpiece? Woah, where have I been?
I feel like I should be sitting in a bar, somewhere in the Midwest, with a gin and tonic in my hand, with Mae West and Greta Garbo accompanying me.
Up until the chorus, I was thinking, dayuum, does this chick ever take a breathe inbetween notes?
Awesome job to the vocalist and the musicians!! Bravo
you made this song sound cultured, which given the lyrics is an achievement.
she is the best, just awesome, her "Straight Up" with tap dance is just captivating!
OMG, you never know how I loved this so MUCH, when I see it for the first time!
Its just like, when you find your beautifull garden, after pass a longtime search.
and the way she bring in the song, the way she sing it. WOW, spectacular!
Best regard from Jakarta.
Hey all! didn't have time on TV to say much ( plus I was SOO nervous!) but I have obviously posted on Facebook and twitter how much I LOVE this cover and it's obviously not my arrangement! Thank you for support of my take on this incredible cover I will forever be a HUGE fan of you guys! and I hope if anything this brings more people to your page! I have some covers on my page if you want to watch, Mitch x
When and if you are on TV again, please make sure you give a shout out to Scott Bradlee and PMJ. I believe they are out here, trying to be stars, just like you.
Good luck.
mitch you were 100000% better
but im a big mitch miller fan so i might be a bit bias
mitchmiller are u sort of a ... homsexyule style guy?¿?
You should have mentioned PMJ at the end/beginning of your performance. No excuses. The Voice is, after all, about voice not composition, so being honest wouldn't have harmed your chances anyway.
Not impressed. >:(
mitchmiller giving credit where credit is due. Strong artistic integrity like that will get you far in this business. Best of luck to you.
Problem by Arians Grande
YES!!!! PLEASE!
YESSSSS
thanks for existing!!!
This girl and the other musicians backing her....HOLY TALENT BRO VERY well done!!!!!! :D
Whoa! And the tap dancing was a great surprise!
wow, you made a iggy song sound good. i mean, making it bearable is incredible, but you made it _good!_
THE TAP!!
I'm having fun watching the videos as I read Scott's book, "Outside the Jukebox." Scott really praises what Ashley brought to the game in incorporating dance and costumes etc into PMJ videos. (Page 130-131)
I was loving this, but when she put in that little bit of tap at 1:58, I loved it all the more.
I like the tap-dancing part.
I'm so glad she tapped danced. Unexpected, good surprise.
She is so perfect for this song
So much love for this! The tap dancing made it THAT much better!
The real definition of fancy queen
I want that dressssss!!!
woo its almost year 2020, how about we bring the twenties style back? :D
This girl is simply awesome
Ashley Stroud is my spirit animal.
🤗She really is so convincing as a flapper that she actually makes this song go back in time!!!🖒😎
Just gonna replace this with the original song. Forever.
+RainPearl Lps meh, not me
Joey Cook slayed this version on Idol.
The Voice brought me here and I will subscribe
They commented on the video
GZ Shifty they bought me here by rocketship sir - I appreciate if you dont use my comment as a soap box
How have these people not taken the world by storm? Seriously, world - you are missing out!
AND she tap dances! WTH....this is bananas!!
Made that song actually sound good. Nice job, guys
Postmodern Jukebox's music is so fab! We will have them on autoplay for my 50th Art Deco themed party!
Some of the best performers are the most unknown. Ashley Stroud rocks!
Amazing! :D
Joey Cook brought me here.
YES
Oh ya.
Yep yep. True!!
***** Who?
Matthew Randell A singer who was on American Idol. She covered a version similar to PMJ. You should check it out!
I don't know what to say. It's too.. Good.
Every time I watch this video it becomes better and better.
The instrumental part after the tap dancing, that's the stuff man. Love it.
great voice. nice band. the drummer is wearing tennis shoes.
Joe nah those are just sneakers.
Great music and cuteness overload!
holy shit shes amazing
This and the Sweater Weather one = GOLD
I’m proud that Nick Finzer is our professor at UNT
It's so unfair how these people with actual talent aren't as famous or well know
This is still my favorite vintage cover of a pop song and I've been watching these for the past decade
