Alec Steele Blacksmith 2019
Really missed the parts when Alec explains stuff on the whiteboard
Hey Alec, you might not see this, but here it goes.
A few years ago I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease. Around that time I had discovered your channel. You're have helped bill me out of a really dark depression numerous times. So thank you very, very much.
a few years ago? sounds like you've beaten their odds...
good you!
@@monabale8263
Mama didn't raise a quitter.
But thank you.
You have just made me tear up. Well done!!
We are glad you are here, @jess carroll, ESRD is not easy.
Glad you're with us, my friend.
I've said before and I'm saying it again - the editing on these videos is one of the best on RUclips. It elevates this channel above many others. Keep up the good work!
That you are going to do old school forging, hopefully in instructor mode. I love it.
Oi! The stress concentration talk was excellent! thank you again.
Totally not a smith myself. I just love watching others work. That is absolutely beautiful! Would totally love to own one
We all can enjoy someone doing great work and crafts :)
Cameraperson: Gets walloped with heavy steel hammer
Alec: Laughs hysterically
There's a guy who REALLY gets into his work!!! Taking one for the team on that shot!
Film school lesson #18- Zoom is good for close ups.
You can tell he's British.
"weaklings die big deal"
"The integer 4". I chuckle with that very precise way of describing the hashtag. Love the videos. Thank you!
Thus describing the hashtag no?
@@Aardvarko Well, he is describing the hashtag, (which is the whole set of characters), just not the octothorpe that begins the tag. So adding the octothorpe, (or hash, hatch, sharp, crunch, or any of the other words for the symbol), to the front of the tag is what makes it a [hash]tag.
Esteban also knew this & you are actually agreeing with him.
Personally was rooting for an irrational number
After all the excesses of mega swords and so on, it is a joy to have something achievable. As always I learn from you with things like this. Thank you for sharing and showing how damnably skilled you are.
I love this. I just got 77 lb peddinghous anvil this week and am super excited to use it!!!! Thanks for awesome content Alec's team!
I never thanked you for the keychain, it reminds me to continue. Thank you, all at the shop and all who help!
The only good thing about quarantine is that, I get to watch your vids all day!!!!
It makes me extremely happy for Alex that he is not only skilled, but determined enough to start his RUclips channel, then opening a store, to moving across the world where he now employs people, and now he's teaching and encouraging his craft. Very few people are smart enough to capitalize on not only thei skill, but communication and charisma. And I don't know if he's a US citizen yet, but that the most American thing you can do.
Been watching you for over a year. I do not blacksmith but enjoy watching your show. Thank you and whiskey cheers from Iowa.
Leaves are a common project for beginning blacksmiths, and anyone who has ever tried to make one can attest to what a phenomenal display of hammer control this is. Not a strike out of place and exactly as hard as he needs them to be; all those smooth tapers happen so incredibly fast and easy, and even the chisel marks to make the leaf design are all even and nice. I'd get a lot more done if I could hammer like that. I'll get there one day!
I love watching you forge and make tools. Even just a simple punch.
Really interesting video as always. Regarding the stress concentrations, it is also very important, maybe even more than the tapper itself, not to have sharp inner edges, but to always round them!
I also really like, as always, the montage and especially its synchronisation with the music, always a pleasure to see
Wow Alex teaching is your vocation 👍 love it!!
Loved your videos for years. Seen just about every one you produced while I was in highscool, even had your Snapchat for a long time ! I joined the army and started watching less and I picked up your channel a few months ago and saw you had moved just a couple hours down the road. I hope when I come back to the states that I can meet you. I also hope you are enjoying the hell out of everything MT has to offer.
that is the such a cool bottle opener and I love that there are 3 different projects going on at the same time it keeps it very interesting
Dude! I always wondered why my leaves cracked there! Wow man that was an awesome tip and explanation!
U should forge a trident 🔱
I love it when you hand forge! Great job!! ❤️❤️
Hi I love your videos and find much inspiration in your videos to my own Black smith
Dude, what is this ? Like 2017 Alec Steele ? You cut your hair, you forge leaves... love it :)
The absolute quality of these videos is insane
Your anvil still looks great. Normally they look like pieces of junk, but it's stayed clean and nice looking. Nice work creating it.
Alec Thank you so much for explaining why those stress fractures occur when making a leaf.
@alecsteele thank you for the kind words/shoutout! Awesome video!
The final hammer blow of each process hitting on the eight note when the rest were on quarters is a great touch!
Great video Alec. I love seeing you going back to forging with a hand hammer on the anvil. Not that there's anything wrong with the power hammer. The power hammer is awesome. I just love hearing the sounds of the hammer and anvil. Keep up the great work!
I feel like I get more motivation from watching Jamie's editing than I do wanting to forge something. I love forging as well if I had the space I would.. But I mean, dude doesn't get enough props.
Been wanting to see this for a long time. I thought he had forgotten his roots in that old shop
I am wondering who of your viewers is actually a blacksmith in any way. It would be interesting if you would make a poll in one of your next videos. (Or maybe you already did that recently and I just missed it😅)
I myself am not a blacksmith. I have enough hobbies with all the electronics, 3d printing, carving and epoxy stuff I do. That’s why I watch the videos of your fellow RUclipsrs like Bobby Duke, Evan & Katelyn,... That’s also how I discovered your channel. I am generally interested in making stuff and seeing people make stuff, even if it is out of my area. It inspires me.😊
Alec, Thank you for thinking of us beginners.
I will use 1/4 spring steel...cause it is all I have.
I'm going to be doing the same. I think it's probably not a bad choice for a bottle opener because you can harden and temper it and not have to worry about it bending.
THE EDITING IS SO AWESOME!!!!
Awesome Leaf Bottle Opener , Alec !!!!!!!!!!!
I like the videos where he does hand forging it is always nice to see
I love that leaf, so cool
A grappling hook build would be so sweet!
I plan on building a small forging area next year, among a lot of other things, so I can't participate now. But, I hope I remember to check these out again then for some fun beginner practice ideas.
Hey Alecc, have you tried making Arab Damascus sword? it's a very beautiful piece of art and I think you might have fun making one
yes!
that would definetly be and entertaining series
a scimitar?
@@monabale8263 no, search Arabian Damascus sword. Damascus the city of Syria not the damascus steel.
@@monabale8263 a Samshir is an elegant, slender curved blade, fairly long and thin, and known for their wicked sharpness. The mythical test was its ability to part a silk scarf merely dropped against its edge. A scimitar is also curved, but is usually heavier, and wider at the front of the blade so that it has forward balance and is a good chopper
I would love to see you make a cool looking fishing gig and go out gigging for some invasive species. That would be a fun video
That camera slap surprised the hell out of me haha nice opener
this is harder then it looks and i love it
I love that beat of the music lines up with the hammer strikes
Another beautiful piece
Just got my first anvil from an auction, its nothing special just 55 pound cast steel but I am really excited to start somewhere!!
Awesome tutorial. Love the "beautiful people" music overlay track.
When will the testing of the Steele anvil be complete? IM DYING to order one for my shop.
when is he sending one to Demo Ranch?
me too
Dying? They'll probably say it was covid related
I've been making knives for a bit, but I grind a lot more than I should need to, so I'll have to give this series a try to improve upon my skillset, I'm loving these basic videos that dont require a power hammer, hydraulic press, 19 different steels and a large Hadron collider to make. Might I reccomend a video on making a pair of tongs?
I like the instructional style
I have to just point out and say my respect to the editing here once again! Damn!
So many of my leaves have broken off from those blasted, stress fractures. So happy to have you explain the cause of this phenomena and hope it improves my leaves. Maybe the one for this challenge. :)
Very pretty! Well done
Beautiful work!
that anvil looks so nice
Alec, you should bring something like this back, or have the dudes in Montana do something like it
you guys should make a dragon guan dao they're a chinese spear weapon they've got a large decorative blade and a really cool thing that covers over the ricasso area and they have a lot of areas for improvement and they are really complex they have cool designs with gold inlay engraving all sorts of stuff that you might have done before but they are really cool i think you'd enjoy making one.
Im 16 and i enjoy alec making stuff
Your channel is the best!
Love this kind of content... keep it coming
Ay. Im addicted to your bike build i need more
I got here through constant refreshing of my home page
Your not going to regrey it

GN strikes again!!!

I really love the editing of this video. Great job Jamie
8th also a hammer and and axe, Alec I love forging but rebar is the only accessable material for me and If I was able to buy more material I wouldn't be able to move the metal with a coal forge and 2.5 pound hammer
Try going to a scrap yard, the coil springs and axle shafts from vehicles are good quality steel.
Finally there is a real truck in the shop
I definatly need one !
Hey Alec! I was wondering if Mrs. Steele knows how to forge. Maybe do a little episode of showing her how and showing is what she makes?
Great video and series.
The stress fracture explanation on creating a weak point reminded me of how an average person can tear a phone book in half by introducing said weak point.
I love the idea. Ill have my own workshop soon and im definitely going to need those tips and tricks
Hey Alec, I think you should try and make a padlock and key, it could be really interesting
Alec, do you think you could try to forge a sea horse? I think you could get some good details worked into one about 8-9 inches tall, smaller may be easier or harder- there's the adventure to it.
Great project Alec. I'm curious to see some of those bottle openers from the viewers. 👍😁
Unfortunately I can't forge anything yet, however, I am about to attempt to build my first forge as a project, hopefully I can then use it to make things.
That T-shirt is sick.
I like it when you do something completely different from blades
Wish I could enter. But between my left hand being in a splint from cutting two tendons and needing emergency surgery to fix them, I'm also out of town about to have another major surgery for an unrelated issue. Good luck everyone. I'll be back to forging in a couple of months. Be safe, have fun, and keep making stuff!
Very nice bottle opener.. Hi from Italy
Of all my scripts on RUclips, I think this is my favorite. My only issue is, that I wish the videos could be longer.
DON’T KNOW WHO IS DOING YOUR EDITING BUT THEY ARE AWESOME.
Jamie @jamie.popple on instagram
cheers mate for the great content! keep up the awesome work and happy forging!
This really takes me back to when this was a Blacksmithing channel.
Great advice, perfect form. I would love to try a leaf, for everything but an anvil. Anyway great advice
looks awesome wow just love it @ Alec Steele
you should hold a contest where you go and host an episode from a viewer's blacksmith shop.
Funny how next week is tongs and I have tongs made by him so I can copy them🤣😂
Can't wait for the tree to be forged :D
Alec you should go on the show Forged In Fire. Its a really cool show and it would be amazing if you went up there.
IIRC, that was suggested before, he said he didn't have time seeing as he had a business to run, and this was BEFORE he got married, so i think his commitments have only increased since then.
You should try to make a tungsten cuban necklace nobody has ever done it and I know youd make the best attempt and if it doesn't work make a damascus cuban everyone would want one and it would be an amazing accomplishment
I *really* want to be able to participate in the 4WOF, but I don't have the equipment nor location needed to do so.
Guess I'll just be enjoying the videos as usual the upcoming weeks then xP
I dont know your location, but if you can find some space to fit a shop vac, some steel pipe (NOT GALVANISED), and some charcoal, you can start forging. Dig a hole to fit the pipe in, drill some holes in it for air, and hook the shop vac up to it. My first "anvil" was a rock for heavy hitting, and a log for fine tuning. You can start for less than 100 bucks, but if you live in a city, that makes it a lot more difficult
if u were close to me i got a small set up
you should sell those. it looks so good.
That's going to be one big ass bottle opener
I have some old struts from several cars... the rods that go in the shock housing and the coil springs??? I tried to cut the springs with a hack saw but the blade instantly went dull. i could cut them apart and weld them together to make a tri-metal bar stock, spring steel chromoly and 7018 welding rod to burn it all together. tried to cut one of my 7018 welds with a hack saw and the saw would only put scratches on it... ??? if i were to forge anything it would be cold forged and probably wouldn't be heated over 800 degrees.
Hi my name is Niko I am 13 years old, I have been forging for about a year and a half, I need some tips on how to prevent hammer marks
huh, that is exactly the same with me
I've only been forging for a couple years, but I've recently learned just how important having your hammers properly dressed is. I reground my straight peen and it really cleaned up my forgings. I still need to redress the flat face of my lump hammer turned rounding hammer. My life will be easier when I do, but redressing isn't a ton of fun by hand. Alec posted a great video on this channel on March 9th which addresses dressing the face.
You came to the right place!
Look up some of Alec's tool videos. Particularly the one regarding making a cheaper hammer do the job of a expensive one. It's majoritively in the "dressing", or edges of your hammer.a perfectly square edge will typically leave some good dents, but if you grind the edges back and get the head ever so slightly rounded, you'll drastically reduce the mechanical (caused by tool) chances of it happening. After that, it'll just be a matter of primarily human error. You'll just need more practice with your techniques. Keep at it, you'll figure it out without realizing it.
Your probably not hitting completely flat. This can be fixed by making sure your anvil is at about crotch height. This way you will be striking on a flat plane and not an angled one
Hey i'm a new hand forging guy doing it for pleasure and i wanted to know how do you protect your blades and blacksmithed project from rust ^^' ? Love what you're doing and i'm making a new forge in my french school trying to finish it before the end of the week to participate at the 4 weeks of forging. Thanks for your happiness and showing us some goode and exiting project ;).
PS : sorry for the anglais
Very cool I like it a lot would help me open all the craft soda that I drink :)
Saving up for some tools cool bottle opener ...burb lol
Wibbling....... I learned something new tonite. And it's getting bloody hot in Texas. On the topic, what type of punches did you use on the leaf?
